2019 RTSports Outlook

McKinnon's season was over before it even started last year, tearing his ACL the week before the season. He comes back to a crowded backfield with Tevin Coleman and Matt Breida now in the mix. This will cut into his chances and limit his fantasy upside. McKinnon had 40-plus receptions each of his previous two seasons before the injury. He is a good fit for the 49ers offense. McKinnon is a strong back with good speed and playmaking ability. He has some big-play ability and makes plays in the passing game.

FANTASY OUTLOOK:  McKinnon should come at a much cheaper rate than last year and with good reason. He has a crowded backfield to compete with for touches and is coming off a major injury. Consider him a No. 3 fantasy back. He can get around 800 total yards, 40 receptions and five or so scores.

RotoBaller's Outlook

When the Minnesota Vikings drafted him, Jerick McKinnon was supposed to be the next Adrian Peterson. And then he wasnt. He was ravaged by injury throughout the early part of his career, and despite his S.P.A.R.K. score being through the roof, he still could not outpace Matt Asiata to win the outright starting job in the eventual absence of Peterson. This was all supposed to change in the running back friendly system in San Francisco in 2018. One thing did come true. It was running back friendly. Just not for McKinnon who again was bitten by the injury bug. This time he missed the entire season after tearing his ACL in training camp. The injury allowed the likes of Raheem Mostert, andMatt Breidato succeed in his place. With Jimmy Garoppolo returning from his own torn ACL, the offense which had to rely heavily on the run game at times last season should see focus more on the passing game. The passing game weapons andincoming runner Tevin Coleman, who Kyle Shanahan is familiar with from Atlanta, will make it difficult for Jerick McKinnon or any of the backs there to separate themselves in this committee. Therefore, the most valuable player for fantasy the one with that requires the least draft investment and still has a substantial role. This would potentially make the player to own in the San Francisco backfield Matt Breida not McKinnon. McKinnon may still be living on his athletic numbers from the combine, but with Coleman and Breida outperforming him in recent years he could quickly end up the third option in that backfield. That is not an ideal situation to take a risk on with a draft pick in the eighth round. That is especially the case when Breida is available in the 12th round with the same upside potential.

The San Francisco 49ers expect running back Jerick McKinnon (knee) to be medically cleared by training camp. The 27-year-old McKinnon, who signed a four-year, $30 million deal with the Niners before the 2018 season, missed the entire campaign with a torn ACL. Despite the teams depth at running back, McKinnon is expected to share the backfield and split the bulk of touches with newly-signed Tevin Coleman. Throughout his four-year career, McKinnon has been a versatile back with the ability to run and catch passes. He recorded 201 touches for 991 scrimmage yards and five touchdowns in 2017 with the Minnesota Vikings. As RotoBallers 32nd-ranked running back, McKinnon is shaping up to be a high-risk, upside RB3 candidate.

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) is expected to receive clearance near the start of training camp, as he makes his way back from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Fantasy Spin: The Niners have depth at the position with Tevin Coleman, Matt Breida, Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson, so McKinnon won't be rushed back until he is 100 percent. It also wouldn't be surprising to see him as a healthy inactive early in the season as a precaution, as long as Coleman and Breida are healthy themselves. As such, McKinnon is a risky fantasy proposition heading into 2019.

Jun 12 5:33pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) hopefully will be a full participant when training camp begins, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Fantasy Spin: McKinnon will be competing with Tevin Coleman, Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert for playing time during training camp, so fantasy owners will need to monitor the situation. He will have fantasy value in all leagues if he has a solid offensive role.

May 25 5:53pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) is not participating in offseason workouts but is expected to be available for the start of training camp.

Fantasy Spin: McKinnon will be competing with several other running back for playing time this upcoming season. Fantasy players will need to keep an eye on him during camp to see what role he will receive. He should have fantasy value in 2019 but may not be a weekly starting option.

May 16 12:53pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida said Wednesday, May 15, the team could feature a three-man running back rotation also involving Jerick McKinnon and Tevin Coleman. 'They've talked to us about it,' Breida said. 'They've said, 'Hey, we're going to use all you guys.' All three of us are going to be used a lot. I don't want to give away any secrets, but we're all going to be used in the offense.' It's still too early/unclear how snaps will be divided.

Fantasy Spin: There are ample fantasy points to be found with Kyle Shanahan running backs, but the current three-pronged outlook doesn't bode well for fantasy GMs at the moment. Hopefully you'll have ample time before your drafts to see if the picture takes on some clarity.

Apr 5 2:43pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RBs Tevin Coleman Jerick McKinnon, Matt Breida, Jeffery Wilson and Raheem Mostert will ultimately decide who plays and how much each one plays, according to comments made by head coach Kyle Shanahan on the Adam Schefter podcast recently. 'Everyone keeps asking me that like I'm in charge of that or something,' Shanahan said with a laugh. 'It's up to the players. They will define their roles. That's kind of what's unique about this.'

Fantasy Spin: The common assumption since Coleman signed in March was that he would probably handle more carries than anyone else in this backfield in 2019, but it could easily be argued Breida was more impressive in 2018 than Coleman was at any point during his time with Shanahan in Atlanta. It is shaping up to be an unpredictable backfield, although McKinnon's role as the pass-catching back - assuming he is recovered from his ACL injury - would seem to be the most secure.

Mar 26 12:10am ET

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch said that running back Jerick McKinnon fits into the team's plans for the 2019 season. McKinnon missed all of his first year in San Francisco after getting injured in the preseason. Now he'll have to fight for touches with Tevin Coleman and Matt Breida, which will make it very tough for him to carve out fantasy value. McKinnon was a popular breakout candidate going into last year's drafts, but he ended up being an early-round bust.

Mar 25 12:23pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) will remain on the roster past April 1 and 'fits' into the team's plan for the 2019 season, according to general manager John Lynch.

Fantasy Spin: This should not come as a surprise despite McKinnon's ACL injury last summer given how much the team invested in him in free agency, as the goal was always to use him as a unique weapon in the passing game. That has not changed despite the emergence of Matt Breida and the addition of Tevin Coleman. McKinnon could still have some low-end RB2 appeal in PPR leagues, although owners may be frustrated with San Francisco's usage of its running backs from time to time in 2019.

Mar 16 7:13pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Tevin Coleman is expected to lead what could be a group of four active running backs on game days this season. Coleman and fellow RBs Jerick McKinnon, Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert would comprise the foursome.

Fantasy Spin: It's an admirable group, but this could be a nuisance for fantasy purposes. Coleman is the running back to own in San Francisco, but McKinnon and company really limit his ceiling. Both Coleman and McKinnon still possess PPR RB2 upside.

Feb 27 2:53pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) is on schedule in his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament last year and is expected to be the No. 1 running back for the 49ers this season, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Fantasy Spin: McKinnon is a playmaker and a PPR RB1 candidate at his best, but Matt Breida is an underrated fantasy football running back. He totaled over 1,000 yards and five touchdowns in 2018 with McKinnon out. If McKinnon is hurt again or doesn't perform well enough, Breida will be chomping at the bit to take over.

Jan 29 10:23pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) is reportedly 'six weeks ahead in terms of his time frame' as he continues to make his way back from the torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered one week before the opening of the 2018 regular season, according to general manager John Lynch.

Fantasy Spin: The fact McKinnon suffered his injury prior to the start of the season means he will be roughly 11 months past his surgery when training camp begins. He should come at a discount in fantasy drafts based on the simple fact he hasn't played in a year and is expected to share the backfield touches with Matt Breida, but his upside in a Kyle Shanahan offense remains immense. He could easily push for 80 to 90 catches if he can return to form and stay healthy in 2019.

Jan 25 1:20am ET

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (knee) and running back Jerick McKinnon (knee), who both tore their ACLs in 2018, are both doing well in their rehabs and haven't had any setbacks. McKinnon tore his ACL a week before the regular season began, while Garoppolo tore his in the fourth quarter of Week 3 against the Chiefs. General manager John Lynch said the team expects Garoppolo to be ready by the start of training camp in late July, and he might even be cleared by the beginning of organized team activities in late May. McKinnon is six weeks ahead of his original timetable and is also expected to be full go for training camp. Lynch spotted Garoppolo throwing to McKinnon just last week. Garoppolo has started just 10 games in his NFL career but has a ton of upside in head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense moving forward. He's best drafted as a QB2 with upside in 2019. McKinnon was a popular breakout candidate in 2018 but never had a chance to get off the ground. With Matt Breida emerging in 2018, it's fair to wonder how big of a role McKinnon will have next season, but he could be a sneaky upside pick in PPR leagues after missing all of 2018.

Jan 22 12:53pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) was recently seen catching passes from QB Jimmy Garoppolo, general manager John Lynch said Tuesday, Jan. 22, in an interview.

Fantasy Spin: A preseason knee injury shelved McKinnon for the season, but at least it happened earlier enough that McKinnon is expected to participate in training camp and be ready for the start of 2019 season. And that coupled with the Niners' strong productiveness with several different backs makes McKinnon an intriguing fantasy bounce-back candidate.
