2019 RTSports Outlook

Rivers had his usual consistent season, having multiple touchdowns all but four games. He was 12th overall in fantasy quarterback scoring. Rivers had five 300-yard games and four three-touchdown games. HIs numbers weren't off the charts but super consistent in the Chargers good offense. Rivers had his sixth straight 4,000-yard season. He is 37 years old but remains the franchise quarterback for the Chargers high-powered offense. Rivers' arm strength seems to be down some and he struggles with the deep ball a little more than earlier in his career, but he still gets the job done. Rivers is accurate and has a quick release. He knows the offense well and does well in the pass-first system. Rivers has 10 4,000-yard seasons and six with 30-plus total touchdowns.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Rivers isn't an elite fantasy quarterback but just outside that group. He will be super consistent, though, which is a big plus for his fantasy owners. Consider him a low-end No. 1 or top No. 2 for fantasy teams. His numbers might slip a little with him a year older but don't expect much of a drop - if any. Expect a season with around 4,300-passing yards and 30 touchdowns with 13 interceptions.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Seriously. Stop drafting Philip Rivers. I don't meannever draft him. I just mean that your late round QB target in single QB leagues should neverbe Rivers. Let's review Rivers' finishes by average ppg over the past five seasons: QB13, QB13, QB19, QB14, QB13. If you want to draft Rivers as a second QB to pair with an upside unknown, I get it. I don't agree with it. But I get it. However, under no circumstances, should Rivers be your QB1 on purpose. Analysts like JJ Zachariason and Denny Carter have proven you can stream a mid to low end QB1. You can consistently and reliably stream a QB that is better than a full season of Philip Rivers. He's the same guy every season, yet every season, fantasy gamers draft him on purpose. When you see Rivers nearing the top of the available QBs, go take someone else with actual upside. Given how replaceable the QB position is in fantasy football, for your QB to matter, he has to break out like Patrick Mahomes in 2018. There is no chance Rivers is that guy. His range of outcomes is basically QB10-14. Instead of drafting Rivers, go ahead and take a QB that actually has the upside to post a top six finish at the position because in 2019, Rivers will once again be a low end QB1/high end QB2, which does nothing for your fantasy team.

Philip Rivers and the Chargers are facing a stingy Titans Defense this week. In the last three weeks, the Titans have only allowed two passing touchdowns. Meanwhile, in Rivers last three games hes passed for four touchdowns and 4 interceptions, which included a juicy matchup against the Dolphins that helped pad his stats. Rivers is a usually a streaming option, but fantasy owners shouldnt count on him this week.

Los Angeles Chargers left tackle Russell Okung (heart) said that he could return as early as Week 7 against the Titans. Currently on the Physically Unable to Perform list, Okung has yet to play this year. It's great news for a Chargers offensive line that hasn't been giving quarterback Philip Rivers much time to stay in the pocket and deliver accurate passes. It still seems unlikely that Okung returns this quickly, but it's certainly something for Rivers and the Chargers offense to look forward to.

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers played poorly on Sunday as the Chargers lost to the Steelers. Rivers was responsible for turnovers on back-to-back drives in the first quarter when he overthrew Melvin Gordon on a backwards pass that was recovered and returned for a touchdown and had a tipped pass intercepted four plays later. With the Chargers in a 14-0 hole before the end of the first quarter, Rivers settled down and racked up a ton of yards through the air, finishing with 320. Unfortunately, the team wouldn't actually get on the board until the end of the third quarter, and Rivers would float a desperation pass at the end of the fourth quarter that would be intercepted to end the comeback. Rivers did tally a pair of passing touchdowns on the day, but his poor play was a major reason why LA lost on Sunday.

From RotoBaller

Oct 14 1:03am ET

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers completed 26 of his 44 passes for 320 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the team's Week 6 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Rivers also had a backward pass returned for a touchdown.

Fantasy Spin: Rivers was brutal with a capital "B" for much of Sunday night, turning the ball over early and sticking his team in a 14-point hole. He picked it up late, leading the Bolts to a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns, but his final pass of the game was a terrible interception. Poor offensive line play is part of the issue, but Rivers needs to step up his game. He's looking at a tough matchup with a desperate Titans squad in Week 7.

From TheHuddle

Oct 13 11:30pm ET

Chargers' QB Philip Rivers passed for 320 yards on 26-of-44 with two touchdowns in Sunday's game against the Steelers. He did throw two interceptions in the loss.

Oct 11 8:40pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is set to square off against a Steelers Defense that has been on point recently. While Pittsburgh is 1-4, they've allowed just 7.54 fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks in the last two weeks, including a match-up with Lamar Jackson. Rivers is obviously a well-versed veteran with an abundance of weapons scattered around him, but his offensive line is terrible, the run game is suspect, and injuries abound for the Chargers. In the long run, it will probably be the combination of Keenan Allen and Austin Ekeler who bail Rivers out and make him a worthy start this week.

From RotoBaller

Oct 9 2:40pm ET

The Los Angeles Chargers placed center Mike Pouncey (neck) on the Injured Reserve on Wednesday and signed center/guard Ryan Groy in a corresponding move. It's another injury in a long list for the Chargers this year, as usual. Quarterback Philip Rivers looked his age in Week 5 in a home loss to a Broncos Defense that is starting to pick things up. Rivers will be a high-end QB2 in another home game against the Steelers this Sunday night, but he has some difficult matchups upcoming in the Titans, Bears and Packers.

From RotoBaller

Oct 7 2:20am ET

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers has really struggled against the Broncos over the last two seasons. For the third straight game against Denver, Rivers threw a pair of interceptions. The Chargers lost, and poor play by Rivers played a pretty big role in that. Rivers averaged just 4.4 yards per attempt in the game, and one of his interceptions came on a short pass into Denver's end zone when LA looked like a sure bet to get a touchdown. The Chargers would end up losing by just seven points. It was easily Rivers' worst performance of the season, but hopefully he can bounce back against the Steelers next week.

From RotoBaller

Oct 5 10:10am ET

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers may not put up huge numbers in Week 5, but it's probably not going to be because of his play. It will likely be more related to Denver's weakness to the run. So far, Denver's defense has been one of the worst in the league against the run, and in exchange, they haven't allowed a single quarterback to throw for more than 259 yards against them. Only one QB has put up two touchdowns through the air, and Denver's defense hasn't allowed more than 27 points all year. While Rivers has the most weapons of any passer that's faced Denver so far, it's more likely the two-headed monster of Melvin Gordon and Austin Ekeler does the majority of the damage this week.

From RotoBaller

Sep 30 1:40am ET

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers controlled the game once again as he led his team to victory over the lowly Miami Dolphins. Rivers completed 80% of his passes for 310 yards and two touchdowns in a 30-10 rout. Rivers was forced to work without two of his top three wide receivers, but he quickly turned to the backups like there was no difference. Rivers regularly peppered Dontrelle Inman, Lance Kendricks, Andre Patton, and Troymaine Pope with passes as the Chargers cruised to victory with a strong second half. Rivers is well on his way to being a top-five fantasy quarterback once again this season, though better defenses do lie in wait on the road ahead.

From RotoBaller

Sep 29 9:23pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers completed 24-of-30 passes for 310 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 4 against the Miami Dolphins.

Fantasy Spin: Rivers has thrown for 293 or more yards in each of his four outings, with 300-plus games in three of those affairs. He also has two or more TD throws in three of his four games. Fantasy owners can't ask for much more than that on a regular basis. He'll be challenged in Week 5 by the Denver Broncos defense.

From TheHuddle

Sep 29 4:30pm ET

Chargers' QB Philip Rivers passed for 310 yards on 24-of-30 with two touchdowns in Sunday's win in Miami. It was Rivers's 2nd consecutive 300+ yard passing game. He has averaged 314 yards passing in those games.

Sep 27 1:20pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers has been one of the most valuable quarterbacks in the league so far, and that trend shouldn't stop this weekend. Rivers will be facing a Dolphins squad that is worst in the league at containing opposing offenses. Miami has given up the second-most fantasy points to opposing QBs, they've allowed the most red zone touchdowns in the league, and they're clearly playing for next year. Expect Rivers to ball out against this terrible Dolphins squad and put up huge numbers in Week 4.

From RotoBaller

Sep 23 12:40am ET

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers completed 31 passes for 318 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday as the Chargers fell to the Houston Texans. LA continued to struggle in the second half of ballgames, and Rivers was sacked five times on the day. The 46 passing attempts were the most Rivers has had in a regular season game since Week 1 of 2018, and Rivers hasn't won a single game in the last five years when he's thrown the ball 45 or more times. Whether LA wins or loses, Rivers has the ability to put up gaudy numbers, so he'll be valuable no matter how the season goes for the underperforming Chargers.

From RotoBaller

Sep 22 11:53pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers completed 31 of his 46 passes for 318 yards and two touchdowns and added nine yards rushing on two carries in a 27-20 loss to the Houston Texans in Week 3.

Fantasy Spin: After failing to find the end zone against the Detroit Lions in Week 2, Rivers responded with his second 300-yard effort of the year. With the tanking Miami Dolphins on tap on in Week 4, he's a QB1 in all formats.

From TheHuddle

Sep 22 8:30pm ET

Chargers' QB Philip Rivers passed for 318 yards on 31-of-46 with two touchdowns in Sunday's loss against the Texans.

Sep 19 5:50pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is set to start his 211th consecutive game on Sunday when the team faces the Texans. That start will pass Eli Manning and give Rivers sole possession of second place on the all-time Iron Man list behind Brett Favre. While the accomplishment was always going to be noteworthy, it is especially magnified this week since Manning just got benched and Ben Roethlisberger, Rivers' other famous draft classmate, was placed on IR this week with an elbow injury. Rivers will match up against a Texans Defense that hasn't looked as intimidating as in years past, and owners should expect him to put up excellent numbers once again.

From RotoBaller

Sep 16 2:30am ET

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers still threw for nearly 300 yards, but it was far from a strong performance. Rivers didn't throw for any touchdowns, and he got picked off on the team's final offensive play of the game, when he tried to force a pass into double coverage from 28 yards out. Rivers only completed 58% of his throws on the day, but fantasy owners shouldn't be terribly concerned just yet. He still has a host of weapons, he still puts up 300-yard days on the regular, and he's known to throw a few clunkers like this throughout a year. Don't be surprised if he tosses three TDs next week.

From RotoBaller

Sep 15 4:23pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers went 21-for-36 for 293 yards, zero touchdowns and one interception against the Detroit Lions in Week 2. He also rushed for 12 yards on one carry.

Fantasy Spin: Rivers has thrown for at least 290 yards in each of the first two games but was held without a touchdown this week. He will face the Houston Texans in Week 3 and can be a low-end No. 1 quarterback in leagues.

From TheHuddle

Sep 14 3:10pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers lost his tight end this week, but he should still be able to put up a good performance in Week 2 against the Lions. The veteran star has shown before that he has no problem picking apart a defense with nothing but backup wideouts, and he'll at least have his favorite targets, Keenan Allen and Austin Ekeler, available this week. Detroit's defense fell apart in the second half of last week's game, and that was against a rookie QB with a rookie head coach. Someone with Rivers' experience should have no problem finding holes.
