2019 RTSports Outlook

Mariota had arm issues last year, which seemed to plague him much of the season. This led to Mariota not living up to expectations. He did complete a career-high 69 percent of his passes but threw for just over 2,500 yards and had 13 total touchdowns in 14 games. He has not taken a step forward since his big '16 season. Mariota still has time to get it going, but this could be a make or break season for him. He is in his fifth NFL season and has a ton of talent. Mariota has good size, a great arm and can make plays on the move. He can make all the throws and also runs well at the position. Turnovers are an issue, though, and he still looks indecisive in the pocket.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Mariota has the talent to be a fantasy star but hasn't reached that potential. For now, consider him a No. 2 fantasy quarterback, capable of being a top-15 fantasy quarterback. Expect his yardage numbers and touchdown totals to increase from last year as long as he can stay healthy and gets the necessary pieces around him to give him help in the passing game. He'll get around 3,500-passing yards, 400-rushing yards and 25 total touchdowns.

RotoBaller's Outlook

After a breakout 2016 season in which he threw for 26 touchdowns to only nine interceptions, quarterbackMarcus Mariota has done nothing to prove he can repeat these numbers. Since then, he has combined for 24 TD and 23 INT. Last season, while dealing with injuries to his leg and arm, he only amassed 2,528 pass yards with 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions. We are still waiting for a breakout from wide receiver Corey Davis and at this point, it looks less and less likely it will happen. Even in his best season in 2016, Mariota only attempted 451 passes and this type of low volume offense does not produce a solid fantasy quarterback, or even one who is worth drafting. With Derrick Henry looking to have a bigger role, the run game is going to take precedence over the passing game even further. Henry is not a pass-catcher. He is a bruising inside-the-tackles running back. He will require 20 to 25 rush attempts a game and with a slow offense and a defense-first head coach, the offense does not look to be in store for a bright future.Mariota is entering a make-or-break season with the Titans. If he has another bad year, he may be moving to another team in 2020. While it is unusual for a team to let go of a quarterback so young, it could happen if Tennessee feels like one of the quarterbacks in next years draft will get them to the next level in a strengthening division. If you are not playing in a two-quarterback or Superflex league, Marcus Mariota is a solid no-go as a draft pick as his ceiling is severely limited by the offense and he does not have a reasonable pathway to be a starting fantasy QB.

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota needs to earn a long-term commitment from the team as he enters the fifth-year option of his rookie deal in 2019, according to head coach Mike Vrabel. 'I think everybody has a contract, and we're very aware of players who are in the last year of the deal. Marcus is obviously one of those,' Vrabel said. 'When you make a commitment to the QB you want to make sure that this is going to be your guy for the next 7-10 years when you look at the percentage of the cap quarterbacks are driving. Nobody is more proud of what Marcus has done in the offseason than me. He's come back stronger, bigger, with greater understanding of what we're doing offensively, being able to communicate it to players the field. I don't look at the lack of a long-term extension as a negative, though that's what people try to make it. I know Marcus's demeanor and that won't change whether he's on a 10-year contract or its up after the season. He's that type of person. So I know it'll work because of how he is.'

Fantasy Spin: Extra motivation could very well boost Mariota's fantasy numbers in 2019. The 25-year-old has completed 63.2 percent of passes over his 56 games (55 starts) with 69 touchdowns against 42 interceptions. He has scored at least two rushing TDs in each of his four seasons. After receiving plenty of hype last offseason, Mariota is worth a flier for those deploying a late-round quarterback strategy.

Tennessee Titans QB Ryan Tannehill will be the backup to QB Marcus Mariota, head coach Mike Vrabel said again on Sunday, July 7. He said Tannehill's job is to make Mariota better. 'His job as a backup - everybody's job as a backup - is to push the guy in front of him,' Vrabel said.

Fantasy Spin: Tannehill was obviously the starter in Miami, but he is insurance in case Mariota goes down to injury. However, you can scratch him off of your cheat sheets heading into training camp and the preseason barring a disaster in Nashville.

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota will be the team's starting quarterback in 2019, according to head coach Mike Vrabel, who added that QB Ryan Tannehill's job will be to push Mariota and make him better. 'His job as a backup - everybody's job as a backup - is to push the guy in front of him. To compete and try to make yourself better and try to make the team better and see how everybody responds,' Vrabel said.

Jun 24 9:13am ET

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota has been encouraged to take fewer hits by general manager Jon Robinson. 'The thing I've stressed to him, and I know our coaches have stressed to him is, Let's live to play another play,' Robinson said. 'Don't take that hit. If you feel the pocket coming down on you and you take off running, and the 'backer is coming off of coverage and he's coming screaming at you, throw the ball away. It's OK to punt, we'll get another crack at it. That's the main thing, it's stressing to him - to try as best as possible, like all quarterbacks do, to avoid getting hit.'

Fantasy Spin: Mariota's durability has been a problem with nagging injuries throughout his career. It has suppressed him to a low-end QB1 in fantasy.

From TheHuddle

May 28 2:33pm ET

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota currently weighs about 230 pounds - reportedly 12 or 13 pounds more from where he ended last season.

Fantasy Spin: In the linked article, former Titans strength and conditioning coach Steve Watterson spoke about a cautionary percent of body fat for different players at different positions and generally about how additional weight for Mariota and other thinner players can protect them. While 230 pounds might rob the fifth-year quarterback of some of his dynamic running ability, the Titans would be happy with the trade-off if it meant they could have him for 16 games. Regardless, he should remain a fantasy QB2.

May 28 2:10pm ET

Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota is up 12 to 13 pounds from where he was at when the 2018 season ended. The Titans broke through this offseason and convinced Mariota that bulking up was more important than his agility work in an effort to keep him healthy for a full season. The 25-year-old has never played a full season in his four years in the NFL, and he remains a mediocre QB2 option in a run-first offense. The 2019 season might end up being a make-or-break season for Mariota as he attempts to take the next step in his career. He has a combined 24 touchdowns in his last two seasons. That's not going to cut it for fantasy owners.

Apr 15 2:30pm ET

Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota said he added five to 10 pounds of "good weight" this offseason. The 25-year-old signal-caller has never played a full season in his four years in the NFL, so hopefully the added weight can keep him on the field for the long haul. He had a career-low 2,528 yards passing, 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 14 games in 2018. In Tennessee's run-first offense, Mariota is nothing more than an injury risk as a QB2.

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota told The Athletic's John Glennon on Monday, April 15, that he has put on five to 10 pounds of 'good weight so far this offseason.

From TheHuddle

Apr 13 1:23pm ET

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota has been working out and having throwing sessions with at least six of the team's pass catchers this past week leading up to the start of the offseason workouts.

Fantasy Spin: Mariota saw a drop in his passing yards this past season and has only 24 passing touchdowns over the last two seasons. His running ability helps his fantasy value, but he should still be considered a No. 2 quarterback in fantasy leagues.

From TheHuddle

Mar 26 12:00am ET

Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel confirmed at the NFL owners meetings that quarterback Marcus Mariota remains the starter, even after the club acquired Ryan Tannehill from the Dolphins. Vrabel also said he expects Mariota to be ready when the team starts their offseason program on April 15 after battling through injuries in 2018. Mariota started 13 games last season and finished with a disappointing 2,528 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions. On a run-first team without great options in the passing game, Mariota will continue to be a mediocre QB2.

The Tennessee Titans released quarterback Blaine Gabbert after they traded for Ryan Tannehill on Friday. Gabbert's only season in Tennessee in 2018 saw him make three starts while filling in for an injured Marcus Mariota. Gabbert spent 2017 with the Cardinals, three in San Francisco before that and three years in Jacksonville after being drafted 10th overall in 2010. He'll only attract backup work on the open market.

The Tennessee Titans have agreed to terms with free-agent wide receiver Adam Humphries (Buccaneers) on Monday. Financial terms of the deal are undisclosed, but it was believed Humphries was looking for a deal in the $8-10 million range per season. He emerged as a tremendous slot receiver in 2018, posting career highs across the board with 76 receptions, 816 yards and five touchdowns after posting four total scores in 44 games across his first three NFL seasons. He'll have the entire summer to jell with new QB Marcus Mariota, and he could be a tremendous fantasy option in PPR leagues in his new home.

Feb 23 8:53pm ET

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota was sacked 47 times last season - tied for 10th most in the NFL. The Tennessean's Jim Wyatt theorizes that the Titans will address the offensive line this offseason - whether that's through free agency or the draft - to help fix said issue.

From TheHuddle

Jan 21 3:10pm ET

The Tennessee Titans promoted tight ends coach Arthur Smith to be their offensive coordinator on Monday. Under former coordinator Matt LaFleur, who is now the head coach of the Packers, the Titans averaged 312.4 yards per game, ranking 25th in the league. They also finished 27th in the NFL by averaging just 19.4 points per game. He's not a big name in coaching circles and will be tasked with helping quarterback Marcus Mariota improve in what has been a stale run-first offense for several years.
