Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield had a league-high 20 passes batted down at or behind the line of scrimmage in 2019.
The Cleveland Browns agreed to a three-year, $42 million deal with right tackle Jack Conklin on Monday. The deal includes $30 million fully guaranteed and will pay Conklin $20 million in the first year of the deal. It's a big win for the Browns, who desperately need to upgrade their offensive line to help quarterback Baker Mayfield take a leap in 2020 and beyond. The 25-year-old offensive lineman was one of the best offensive tackles on the open market, but he didn't last long. It's good news for Mayfield and running backs Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt and bad news for Derrick Henry in Tennessee. Conklin played in just nine games due to injury in 2018 but has started every game in his other three NFL seasons. He was a first-team All-Pro in his rookie year in 2016.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, who put on some weight last year to bulk up, plans to be slimmer and faster this year with an emphasis on being in better shape. The extra weight that Mayfield carried with him last year caused him to lose some overall quickness. Cleveland had sky-high expectations going into last season, and both the team and Mayfield failed to live up to them. The second-year quarterback completed only 59.4 percent of his passes for 3,827 yards, 22 touchdowns and 21 interceptions in 16 games. He'll be learning a new offense this spring and summer, but Mayfield has plenty of weapons around him to bounce back. Fantasy owners won't be so bold on him and will likely take him as more of a QB2 with upside.
Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield is planning to be slimmer and faster next year after he bulked up before the 2019 season.
Fantasy Spin: Mayfield was a big flop in fantasy last season, and he'll have another chance to rekindle midrange QB1 value in 2020. He's a better buy at the back end of the midrange.
Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield will work on his footwork with offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt. Van Pelt said he's going to have him put his left foot up (last year, had his right foot up) in the shotgun. Van Pelt thinks that will help Mayfield be more fluid in three-step drop out of the gun.
Fantasy Spin: Mayfield was 16th in fantasy points at the position last year in what was a colossal bust of a season. He'll be drafted highly anticipating a breakout again this season, but there are at least seven or eight quarterbacks that should go ahead of him.
Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt said the team will be changing some things in quarterback Baker Mayfield's footwork this offseason "to help him." One specific thing is that they will have Mayfield put his left foot in front instead of his right foot out of the shotgun when he takes the snap. Van Pelt thinks it will help Mayfield be more fluid in his three-stop drop out of the shotgun formation. High expectations were placed on Mayfield and the Browns in his second season, and he failed to live up to them, especially with Odell Beckham Jr. as his No. 1 receiver. There's still time for the 24-year-old to bounce back in a new offensive scheme, but fantasy owners will be drafting him as a QB2 this fall.
Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield talked about his personal disappointment with his 2019 season Friday, Jan. 31, including his 23 total turnovers (21 interceptions and two lost fumbles). 'I've never turned the ball over so many times,' Mayfield said. 'You can't win like that. That falls back on me.'
Fantasy Spin: Drafted as a top-five QB in a number of leagues, Mayfield was one of fantasy's biggest duds of 2019. He'll most likely be a QB2 pick this summer, and it's a pick that will come with ample upside for a potentially profitable turnaround.
The Cleveland Browns are hiring former NFL quarterback and long-time quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt as their next offensive coordinator on Wednesday, according to a league source. Van Pelt was the offensive coordinator for the Bills in 2009. Head coach Kevin Stefanski could still call his own plays in his first season as the head guy in Cleveland. Van Pelt's primary job will be to improve the play of quarterback Baker Mayfield, who underperformed behind a terrible offensive line in 2019. Getting Mayfield and No. 1 wideout Odell Beckham Jr. on the same page is paramount for this team's success in 2020.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield will be on the hot seat in 2020 after a disappointing sophomore campaign, especially after the team fired general manager John Dorsey and head coach Freddie Kitchens. Mayfield's completion percentage (59.4, down from 63.8 in his rookie season), TD-to-INT ratio (22:21, down from 27:14), yards per attempt (7.2, down from 7.7), passing yards per game (239.2, down from 266.1) and passer rating (78.8, down from 93.7) all declined from his rookie year. Cleveland's offense may not have fit Mayfield well and the offensive line was terrible, but he was expected to overcome those issues, especially with an improved supporting cast of Odell Beckham Jr. and Kareem Hunt. Mayfield still has the talent to be a QB1 in the NFL in fantasy, but he'll be drafted as merely a QB2 with upside in fall drafts.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield completed 12 of 27 passes for 279 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions in a 33-23 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 17. He also added four rushes for 29 yards in the contest. The outing caps off what was a disappointing season both for Mayfield and the team. The three-touchdown game was only the second time Mayfield threw more than two scores in a contest all season. He finishes his sophomore campaign with 22 touchdowns and 21 interceptions. With coaching changes rumored in Cleveland, Mayfield will be a bounce-back candidate in 2020 depending on the direction the front office chooses to go.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield will conclude his sophomore season with a road matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. Mayfield has turned in a disappointing season up to this point but has a chance to finish on a high note against a Cincy secondary that has struggled to contain opposing quarterbacks this season. If your fantasy league is holding the championship round in Week 17, treat Mayfield as a mid-tier QB2. He is also on the radar as a tournament play for those making DFS lineups this weekend. Mayfield threw for 192 scoreless yards but did score a rushing touchdown when these two teams met in Week 14.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield completed 20 of 33 passes for 192 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in a 31-15 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 16. While Mayfield's final stat line is passable, he came close to throwing two other interceptions with one getting nullified by a defensive penalty and the other getting overturned after it was ruled the ball hit the ground first. Mayfield will put the finishing touches on a disappointing sophomore season in Week 17 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield went 20-for-33 for 192 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 16.
Fantasy Spin: Mayfield has thrown four touchdowns over the last two games but also has thrown at least one interception in five straight games. He will have a favorable matchup next week and could be a low-end No. 1 fantasy quarterback.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield draws a difficult matchup against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 16. Mayfield threw for 342 yards, one touchdown, and one interception while adding another rushing score when these two teams met back in Week 4. That being said, Baltimore's defense has improved significantly since these two teams first played. They rank fourth in the league in pass-defense DVOA and are allowing the third-least fantasy points per game to the quarterback position. Fantasy gamers competing for the championship should look elsewhere for their starting quarterback in Week 16.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield completed 30-of-43 passes for 247 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in a 38-24 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 15. Mayfield also added 11 rushing yards on two carries in the lopsided loss. Mayfield didn't play particularly poorly in the outing, although he did underwhelm against a Cardinals pass defense that is one of the worst in the league. Mayfield will not be a recommended fantasy option for Week 16 as he will face a tough Baltimore Ravens Defense.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield draws an excellent Week 15 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals have been one of the most generous defenses in the league for opposing passing attacks, allowing the most fantasy points per game to quarterbacks. Mayfield's on-field performance hasn't been great this season but he has the weapons and the matchup lined up in Week 15, giving him a good chance to finish as a QB1 in the fantasy semifinals. Treat Mayfield as a low-end QB1 with plenty of upside this weekend.
Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield was critical of the training staff concerning the injury to WR Odell Beckham Jr. and how it has been handled. Head coach Freddie Kitchens addressed the situation with his quarterback. 'We don't want him addressing other players' injuries, in that manner especially,' Kitchens said Monday, Dec. 9. 'It's been addressed and (Mayfield) understands how to handle things like that moving forward.'
Fantasy Spin: It appears that Mayfield received a talking to, but he will not receive any further disciplinary action from the team for his public criticism of the training staff. He is expected to be good to go for Week 15 against the Arizona Cardinals.
Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield completed 11-of-24 passes for 192 yards, no touchdowns and two touchdowns in Week 14 against the Cincinnati Bengals. He salvaged the day somewhat with a rushing touchdown and 13 yards on the ground.
Fantasy Spin: Mayfield made a lot of mistakes in what should have been a very favorable matchup, so it's a disappointment for fantasy owners, especially those who saw their playoff begin. He will look to right the ship in what should be another favorable matchup in Week 15 at Arizona.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield struggled in a 27-19 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 14. Mayfield went 11-for-24 passing for 192 yards and two interceptions in the win, although he did add 13 yards and a touchdown rushing the ball. It goes down as yet another disappointing performance for Mayfield, who was going up against an extremely vulnerable Cincinnati pass defense. He will find himself in another plus matchup against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 15 but he will be tough to trust after disappointing against the Bengals on Sunday.
Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield faces the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 14, and he has seven touchdowns, no interceptions and a 94 Total QBR in two career meetings with the Bengals.
Fantasy Spin: Mayfield has been coming alive in recent weeks, tossing eight touchdowns compared to just two picks over his last four games. Look for the trend to continue against a porous Cincinnati defense, and Mayfield has potential as a low-end QB1.
