Michel had a very productive rookie season. He had a few nagging injuries that kept him out of three games, but produced big when on the field. He had four 100-yard games and was 69 yards shy of a 1,000-yard season. He showed his big potential in the playoffs, though, rushing for 336 yards and six touchdowns in three games. Michel was a difference maker for as the lead back for the Patriots. He did get very little work in the passing game, having seven receptions on 11 targets. Expect him to play a similar role this year for the Patriots, serving as the lead back but getting little work in passing situations. Michel is an explosive back that does great work in space. He is a big-play threat capable of a huge play every time he touches the ball. He catches the ball well out of the backfield despite not getting much work in that area last season. He does well as a runner on the outside or between the tackles.
FANTASY OUTLOOK: Michel would have a little more value if caught some more passes, but he still should be considered a low-end No. 1 back or solid No. 2. He is going to get his yards and scores in this offense. Michel can finish with around 1,300 total yards, double-digit scores and 20 receptions.
New England Patriots running back Sony Michel was a surprise first-round selection in 2018, as the team is known for rotating RBs and treating them as disposable commodities. With a high draft investment, it seemed as if Michel might become a focal point of the offense. After a slow start due to limited training camp, Michel indeed carried the ball 25, 18, and 24 times between Weeks 4-6 and averaged 105.3 yards with four touchdowns in those games. He was then bitten by the injury bug again, missing a couple of games before resuming his role as the RB1. He wasn't quite as effective upon return, averaging 72.7 yards and scoring twice in the final seven games. His lack of involvement as a pass-catcher (seven receptions all year) limited his appeal in PPR leagues as well. Then the playoffs came and Michel was utterly dominant, racking up 336 yards and scoring six TD in three games en route to another New England Super Bowl victory.Michel was inconsistent but also flashed superior talent and remains on one of the best offenses in the NFL. While his floor isn't as safe as many other backs who play on third downs, Michel is at least a top-20 RB everywhere and can be moved higher in standard-scoring formats. The addition of Damien Harris might concern some but he shouldn't eat into early-down touches, but rather serve as a long-term replacement for Rex Burkhead. If Michel can keep seeing 20+ touches per game, his upside is that of a low-end fantasy RB1. He is best targeted in the fourth round but an argument can be made for him as a third-round value for those skeptical of backs like Damien Williams and Derrick Henry.

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel rushed for 36 yards on 10 carries in the teams 10-3 preseason win over the Panthers. Michel making his preseason debut, albeit inconsequential, has to be a positive sign for fantasy owners in upcoming drafts. The second-year running back has missed most of camp recovering from offseason knee surgery. But the talented runner appears to be healthy and ready to roll. This glimpse of game action, however, will most likely be the only snaps fantasy owners will see until Week 1.
New England Patriots RB Sony Michel rushed 10 times for 36 yards in a 10-3 preseason win over the Carolina Panthers Thursday, Aug. 22.
Fantasy Spin: New England's tendency to use multiple backs and Michel's lack of involvement in the passing game limit his upside, especially in PPR formats, but he should still provide RB2 production as the main back between the tackles and near the goal line.
New England Patriots running back Sony Michel caught all 19 passes thrown his way during competitive practice drills on Monday. Michel is playing catch-up after missing the beginning of camp recovering from minor knee surgery but is already impressing the coaching staff. Michel was a fantastic rookie runner last season, rushing for 931 yards and six touchdowns. But he was a one-dimensional weapon, albeit a highly effective one in the red zone (ranking sixth in the NFL in red zone touches among running backs). If Michel can be trusted in the passing game, he could take his game to another level this season.
New England Patriots running back Sony Michel is slowly working his way back into Patriots offensive fold and remains the unquestioned lead back. Michel (knee) did not begin training camp on the field and the Patriots have been cautious to keep the knee healthy. Michel ran for 931 yards in his rookie season with six touchdowns. The second-year player was a non-factor in the passing game last season but has 10-plus-touchdown potential in 2019. As long as Michel is healthy, he will carry solid RB2 value heading into drafts.
New England Patriots running back Sony Michel has been quickly improving as a pass catcher out of the backfield during practices. He struggled during his rookie season with the route tree, but he has reportedly been "beating man coverage" while "finding soft spots in zones", turning heads with his hands during the early portion of training camp. It's a great sign for those in early fantasy drafts, as he is still in that low-RB2 neighborhood at the moment. He could quickly emerge as a top RB2 or flex fantasy option in rather short order if his ascension in the pass game continues.
New England Patriots RB Sony Michel (knee) saw 'increased work' during practice Thursday, Aug. 1, according to Kevin Duffy of the Boston Herald.
Fantasy Spin: Michel's lack of involvement in the passing game limits his upside in PPR formats, but he should see most of the work between the tackles and near the goal line. He's a midrange RB2 candidate.
New England Patriots RB Sony Michel (knee) was back on the sidelined for team drills on Sunday, July 28, so RBs Brandon Bolden, Rex Burkhead and James White divvied up the first-team carries.
Fantasy Spin: The Patriots are treating Michel with kid gloves as he slowly makes his way back from knee surgery. As long as he can get back to 100 percent by the start of the season, he is expected to see a majority of the backfield touches in New England. As such, treat him as a RB2 or flex fantasy option across most formats.
New England Patriots RB Sony Michel (knee) participated in practice Saturday, July 27.
Fantasy Spin: Michel is coming back from knee surgery and appears to be on track for the regular season. He will receive most of the work at running back for the Patriots and can be a solid No. 2 running back in fantasy leagues.
New England Patriots running back Sony Michel will begin training camp on the PUP list as he continues to recover from offseason knee surgery. Michel will not be eligible to practice with the team and his return is up in the air at this time. The Patriots still have plenty of time to activate the second-year back before first cuts and the expectation is that he should be ready to open the season as their lead back. But players must miss six regular season games if they remain on the PUP list after first cutdowns. The hope is this is precautionary since Michel participated in the team's mandatory minicamp. It is too early to become worried about Michel's status but his situation will have to be monitored throughout training camp all the way up to fantasy drafts.
New England Patriots RB Sony Michel (knee) opens training camp on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list after undergoing a procedure on his knee this offseason.
Fantasy Spin: Michel should still be viewed as a valuable RB2 in all fantasy formats, but the Patriots' running back competition will be one of the most intriguing this offseason following the addition of third-round pick Damien Harris.
New England Patriots RB Sony Michel (knee) said he hopes to be ready for the start of training camp.
Fantasy Spin: Michel could be limited during the early portion of camp but should be fully healthy for the start of the regular season. He is coming off an impressive rookie season and likely will be a No. 2 fantasy running back in 2019.
New England Patriots running back Sony Michel is progressing well after undergoing knee scope surgery and is expected to be ready for mini-camp at the end of the month. Michel ran for 931 yards and six touchdowns as a rookie, then added six touchdowns in three playoff games for the Super Bowl champs. Michel is expected to enter the season as the team's primary running back, something the Patriots haven't had for seasons. One area of improvement for Michel will be in the passing game. The second-year back came out of college with capable hands but a few early season drops disintegrated quarterback Tom Brady's confidence in him. If he can get involved in the Patriots passing game, Michel is in line for huge fantasy season.
New England Patriots RB Sony Michel (knee) has been working out at QB Tom Brady's TB12 training facility this offseason while recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery in hopes of becoming a more explosive runner.
Fantasy Spin: Michel, a first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, will be competing for work with James White, Rex Burkhead, and 2019 third-rounder Damien Harris in 2019. Michel projects to lead the backfield after racking up 981 yards from scrimmage and six total touchdowns last season, but he'll be a risky pick in New England's constantly shuffling rotation.
New England Patriots RB Sony Michel (knee) has been running at 'full tilt' after recovering from offseason arthroscopic knee surgery, according to multiple sources. He was unable to participate in the team's minicamp last month but should be ready for the start of training camp.
Fantasy Spin: Michel will continue to receive the bulk of the carries in the New England offense in 2019 and should be viewed as a solid RB2 option in most fantasy football leagues.
New England Patriots RB Sony Michel (knee) missed some offseason workouts because he recently underwent arthroscopic knee surgery, according to a source. He is expected to be ready for training camp.
Fantasy Spin: Michel may be eased into training camp but should be fine for the start of the regular season. He likely will receive most of the carries in the running game and can be a No. 2 running back in most fantasy leagues.
New England Patriots running back Sony Michel hasn't been spotted at an offseason practice since May 20, and the reason is unclear. It is starting to get concerning, especially since Michel has a history of knee issues. The 24-year-old ran the ball 209 times for 931 yards and six touchdowns in 13 games in an impressive rookie season, but he might be more of a risk in 2019 due to injury and the Patriots crowded backfield that also includes James White, Rex Burkhead, rookie Damien Harris and Brandon Bolden. Hopefully we'll get more clarity on Michel's situation soon.
New England Patriots RB Sony Michel (unknown) has missed all three days of the team's minicamp this week with no explanation from the team. One beat reporter believes the team is simply managing the workload for Michel, who has had a history of knee issues dating back through his time at Georgia.
Fantasy Spin: Michel missed three games last season with knee problems but enjoyed a standout run through the postseason with 345 yards and six TDs in three games. James White, Rex Burkhead and rookie Damien Harris also are in the mix, but Michel is still regarded as a low-end RB2.
New England Patriots RBs Sony Michel and Damien Harris are competing for lead-back duties with James White locked into his role and Rex Burkhead likely viewed as a jack-of-all-trades, change-of-pace runner, according to Kevin Duffy of the Boston Herald.
Fantasy Spin: It doesn't come as a surprise Michel and Harris are the main candidates for the lead role, but Duffy appears to believe Harris will get a fair chance to win the job, although he admits both backs will get carries. Michel is the more talented back of the two, but Duffy points out he didn't do much in terms of explosive runs (four carries of 20-plus yards as a rookie) or in the passing game (seven catches), so there is potential - albeit slight - for Harris to find a niche if he shows well in camp.
New England Patriots RB Sony Michel is currently the only player listed as kick returner on the current depth chart.
New England Patriots RB Sony Michel didn't participate in the team's OTA workouts Thursday, May 23, and one team beat writer says it's possible that the team is limiting Michel's offseason workload.
Fantasy Spin: Michel matched his 13-game regular-season TD total (six) in three playoff games as he enjoyed a strong postseason. Despite the addition of third-round RB Damien Harris, Michel should be drafted as a solid RB2.
