2019 RTSports Outlook

Burkhead missed half the season with a neck injury last year, being limited to eight games. He got his work when on the field in a reserve role, finishing with 317 total yards and 14 receptions. He had at least four carries every game he played last season. Burkhead should play a similar reserve role this season. He has missed a lot of time with the Patriots each of the past two seasons because of injury. Burkhead is a hard working back. He lacks some speed for the running back spot but makes up for that with some toughness. He does well between the tackles and is a pretty good one-cut runner, making defenders miss. He also has good hands and can help as a receiver.

FANTASY OUTLOOK:   Burkhead has some potential if he can stay on the field but injuries are an issue. Plus, he has a lot to compete with for touches. For now, take him as a reserve back, and hope he can stay healthy and get consistent touches. He can get around 500 total yards and a few scores.

RotoBaller's Outlook

In two seasons in New England,Rex Burkhead has played in 18 games. In those games, he has amassed totals of 121 rushes, 450 yards, and five touchdowns. These are not numbers to feel good about if you are thinking about drafting him this season. With Sony Michel being the running downs back, James Whitethe passing downs back,Brandon Bolden being a superb special teams player and rookie Damien Harris being drafted in the third round, the time might just be here where Burkhead is no longer a member of the Patriots.A lot of teams do not carry five active backs for a regular season game, meaning unless there are injuries, Burkhead does not have a role in New England. If he does get released and find a new team his value could go up a little bit. But not to the extent where he needs to be drafted even then.Burkhead is currently not in consideration for a draft pick in fantasy drafts and this should remain the case unless you are in the deepest of 16-team leagues with seven- or eight-man benches. Otherwise, he is at best a mid-season waiver add, if and only if a drastic change happens in either New England or in his team situation. If you are thinking of taking him as a flier, the only thing you will accomplish is to waste a pick on someone when you could have taken someone with true tangible upside. You should be looking at players like DeSean Jackson or even Justin Jackson over a player like Burkhead. At least they have a clear path to fantasy relevance.

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (foot) was limited during practice Friday, Oct. 18.

Fantasy Spin: Burkhead probably will not have a big role if plays since Sony Michel and James White are healthy. He can be avoided in fantasy leagues.

New England Patriots WR Josh Gordon (knee, ankle), TE Matt LaCosse (knee) and TE Ryan Izzo (concussion) did not practice Friday, Oct. 18. RB Rex Burkhead (foot), S Patrick Chung (heel, chest), WR Phillip Dorsett (hamstring) and WR Julian Edelman (chest) were limited.

From TheHuddle

Oct 17 5:20pm ET

New England Patriots running back Rex Burkhead (foot) remains limited in practice as the team prepares to take on the Jets this Monday night in Week 7. Burkhead has missed the past two games and would certainly like another crack at the Jets Defense. In Week 3, Burkhead racked up 69 yards from scrimmage with one touchdown against the Jets. Even if the veteran suits up Monday night, Burkhead will not be fantasy viable until he can prove that he is healthy and back in the flow of the offense.

Oct 17 5:03pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (foot) was limited during practice Thursday, Oct. 17.

Fantasy Spin: Burkhead did not play in the last game but may be active for the Week 7 game. He is behind Sony Michel and James White on the injury report and probably would only see a handful of touches if he plays. He can be avoided in fantasy leagues.

From TheHuddle

Oct 10 7:03pm ET

The New England Patriots have declared OL Korey Cunningham, DL Byron Cowart, RB Rex Burkhead, RB Damien Harris, QB Cody Kessler, WR Phillip Dorsett and CB Joejuan Williams inactive for Week 6.

From TheHuddle

Oct 10 2:43pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (foot) is not expected to play Thursday, Oct. 10, when the Patriots host the New York Giants.

Fantasy Spin: It looks as if Burkhead will miss his second straight game, giving a slight fantasy boost for RBs Sony Michel and James White.

From TheHuddle

Oct 10 2:40pm ET

New England Patriots running back Rex Burkhead (foot) is not expected to play on Thursday night against the Giants, according to a source. It would be Burkhead's second straight missed game. In a game that should feature positive game script nearly the entire contest against a Giants team that is injured all around, both Sony Michel and James White figure to be heavily featured. The Patriots will also be without receiver Phillip Dorsett, which is more good news for pass-catching back White.

From RotoBaller

Oct 9 4:00pm ET

New England Patriots wide receivers Julian Edelman (chest) and Josh Gordon (knee) and running back Rex Burkhead (foot) are all listed as questionable for Thursday night against the Giants. Burkhead practiced in full on Wednesday, while Edelman and Gordon were limited all week. Edelman and Gordon are expected to suit up and need to be in your starting lineups against a bad Giants secondary. Burkhead was inactive last week and barely played in Week 4. The Pats will most certainly have positive game script for most of this game, but Burkhead will still be a very shaky PPR flex option if he's active with Sony Michel and James White ahead of him.

From RotoBaller

Oct 9 3:43pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (foot) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 9, but is listed as questionable for Week 6.

Fantasy Spin: Burkhead probably will not receive a lot of touches if he plays this week and can be avoided in fantasy leagues.

From TheHuddle

Oct 8 5:53pm ET

New England Patriots WR Phillip Dorsett (hamstring) did not practice for a second straight day Tuesday, Oct. 8. RB Rex Burkhead (foot), S Patrick Chung (heel), DB Nate Ebner (groin), WR Julian Edelman (chest), WR Josh Gordon (knee) and LB Shilique Calhoun (ankle) were limited.

From TheHuddle

Oct 8 4:50pm ET

New England Patriots running back Rex Burkhead (foot) was limited again during Monday's practice. Burkhead has been battling the injury for a few weeks now and the Patriots playing on a short-week certainly doesn't help matters. The chances of Burkhead playing on Thursday against the Giants should be considered dicey at best. If he does suit up it is reasonable to assume he will be on a snap count, making him an unwise fantasy investment for Week 6.

From RotoBaller

Oct 7 4:53pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (foot) was limited during practice Monday, Oct. 7. The Patriots did not hold a practice Monday, so this is an estimation.

Fantasy Spin: Burkhead did not play in the Week 5 game, so his status for this week is uncertain. He probably would not receive a lot of touches if he plays and can be avoided in most leagues.

From TheHuddle

Oct 6 6:20pm ET

New England Patriots Rex Burkhead (foot) did not play in the teams 33-7 win over the Redskins in Week 5. Burkhead was trending in the right direction by returning to practice on a limited basis this week but the team obviously does not believe he is ready. Burkhead has been a solid contributor this season but could, once again, be a game-time call when the team plays the Giants on a short-week this Thursday to kick off Week 6.

From RotoBaller

Oct 5 2:03pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (foot) on Saturday, Oct. 5, was downgraded out for the team's Week 5 game at Washington.

Fantasy Spin: Burkhead has been hurt and trending in the wrong direction since receiving 17 touches in Week 3 against the Jets, and now will miss his first game of the season. That points toward more Week 5 work for the Pats' top RBs, Sony Michel and James White.

From TheHuddle

Oct 4 4:53pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (foot) was limited during practice Friday, Oct. 4, and is listed as questionable for Week 5.

Fantasy Spin: Burkhead likely will not receive much work on offense with James White back and should be avoided in all fantasy leagues.

From TheHuddle

Oct 4 4:50pm ET

New England Patriots running back Rex Burkhead will have a welcoming matchup as he is expected to return to the lineup against the Redskins. Burkhead (foot) has posted 229 total yards from scrimmage through his first three games this season and the team could lean heavily on the run game if they get up to a big lead early. Burkhead's versatility as a pass-catcher keeps him in the mix and continues to stunt the fantasy value of teammate Sony Michel. Burkhead will have FLEX appeal only in deep formats for Week 5.

From RotoBaller

Oct 4 4:33pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (foot), S Patrick Chung (heel), DB Nate Ebner (groin), WR Julian Edelman (chest) and LB Dont'a Hightower (shoulder) were limited in practice all week and are listed as questionable for Week 5 versus the Washington Redskins. DL Michael Bennett (shoulder) fully participated in practice all week, while WR Josh Gordon (knee) was upgraded to full practice Friday, Oct. 4; both players no longer appear on the injury report. WR Gunner Olszewski (hamstring) was not given a practice designation for a second straight day Friday but was also removed from the injury report.

From TheHuddle

Oct 4 3:40pm ET

New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman (chest) and running back Rex Burkhead (foot) were limited in practice all week and are questionable for Week 5 against the Redskins. Wide receiver Josh Gordon (knee) was taken off the final injury report. Both Edelman and Burkhead should play in this excellent matchup. Edelman hasn't been great for his owners through four weeks, but that could all change this weekend. He's a solid WR2. Burkhead took a distant back seat to Sony Michel and James White in Week 4. Playing through injury, he's a shaky RB3/flex, even in PPR leagues, although positive game script in the second half should allow him to be more involved.

From RotoBaller

Oct 3 7:43pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (foot) was limited during practice Thursday, Oct. 3.

Fantasy Spin: Burkhead was barely used last week with James White back in the lineup and probably will only see a few touches again this week. He can be avoided in fantasy leagues.

From TheHuddle

Oct 3 4:13pm ET

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (foot), S Patrick Chung (heel), DB Nate Ebner (groin), WR Julian Edelman (chest), WR Josh Gordon (knee) and LB Dont'a Hightower (shoulder) were limited in practice Thursday, Oct. 3. DL Michael Bennett (shoulder) was a full participant. WR Gunner Olszewski (hamstring) was not given a practice designation.
