2019 RTSports Outlook

Akins was third on the depth chart much of his rookie season, getting sporadic work in a reserve role. He had 17 receptions for 225 yards. He will try to move up the depth chart this season, which is possible because the options ahead of him aren't off the charts talented. Akins is a good athlete that plays more like a receiver than tight end. Akins isn't much of a blocker, though, so using him on three downs at this stage of his career isn't likely.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Akins will get some chances this year but likely be really hit or miss in his current role. He will disappear some weeks. He might help in a pinch as a spot starter in the right matchup. Akins could get around 30 receptions for 400 yards with a few scores.

Houston Texans tight end Jordan Akins was picked by Aaron Reiss of The Athletic as the most improved player at Texans' training camp this year. Akins was constantly making big plays in practice and showing off his versatility. With Jordan Thomas missing most of camp, Akins may actually be in the lead at this point to open the season as Houston's top tight end. That might not translate to much fantasy value on a team that's reportedly interested in keeping four tight ends, but Akins is worth a spot in dynasty leagues in case he emerges as the number-one guy at the position.

Houston Texans TEs Jerell Adams, Jordan Akins and Darren Fells have each practiced and played more with TEs Jordan M. Thomas (hamstring) and Kahale Warring (hamstring) sidelined. Adams even scored a touchdown against the Green Bay Packers in the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 8. 'All had strong camps, no doubt,' head coach Bill O'Brien said.

Houston Texans TE Jordan Akins said he is prepping to play a variety of positions this season. 'I would say slot receiver,' Akins said. 'Special teams as well, up-back, punt return as well as fullback.'

Houston Texans tight end Jordan Akins expects to be used in various spots on the field in 2019. While the battle for playing time at the tight end position will be tough between Akins, Jordan Thomas, and rookie Kahale Warring, Akins being able to be used in the backfield and in the slot can help him carve out a role. Still, with wide receiver Keke Coutee expected to see most of the slot minutes, Akins' versatility isn't enough to make him a trustworthy fantasy player in 2019 unless injuries hit in Houston.
