2019 RTSports Outlook

Williams didn't have quite the breakout season as expected but was a big-time red-zone target for the Chargers. He had 10 touchdowns on 43 receptions. He made plenty of big plays, averaging 15.4 yards per reception. He will look to be more consistent this year, getting a chance to start opposite Keenan Allen from day one. Williams is a tall, physical receiver that does well at catching nearly everything thrown his way. He is a tough cover because of his size and strength. He needs to work on his route-running some and will have some bad drops.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Williams took some steps forward last year, finishing 33rd in fantasy receiver scoring. He should improve on that and get more consistent targets in the Chargers pass-heavy offense. Consider him a low-end No. 2 or 3 fantasy receiver. He can get around 60 receptions for 900 yards and double-digit scores.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Being drafted number seven overall in 2017 may have been the worst thing to happen to Mike Williams. After suffering through an injury-plagued rookie season Williams was already being unfairly discussed as a potential bust.In 2018 Williams came back to show everyone we should calm down and let players develop before labeling them. Jared Goffwould also like you to consider doing this. With Hunter Henry missing the season after a torn ACL, Williams became the go-to receiver in the red zone and at 64 and 220 pounds he is a big target in this area of the field. Playing in all 16 games and only having 43 receptions for 664 yards may not seem like a season to plant your flag on. But he turned those 43 receptions into 10 receiving touchdowns and he was also playing a hybrid role. A role somewhere between the role he will be playing this season and the tight end role vacated by the injury of Henry and the age of Antonio Gates. As he finally gets into his preferred role across from Keenan Allen, and with Tyrell Williams now in Oakland, the numbers will only increase in year three. With Allen still being the top WR in the offense, defenses will need to use their second cornerback on Williams. At his size, he could eat them alive and come down with contested catches downfield for Philip Rivers. A young Vincent Jackson in his time with Rivers would be a good comparison. An increase from 43 receptions is more than possible. However, to obtain his services at the back end of the fifth round of drafts as the WR24 is good but not great value. Hunter Henry coming back will likely hurt his touchdown production, which may drop below 10. However, the potential increase in receptions and yardage, should more than makeup for the TD drop. If you take him in the fifth round, he should make a great WR3 for your team. Or if you decide to go with one of the tight ends or Patrick Mahomes early, he could even be a solid WR2.

Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams burst onto the scene last season with his team-leading 10 touchdowns, but he's just getting started. Williams and teammate Keenan Allen were named the third-best receiver duo by NFL.com analyst James Jones, and Jones pointed out that 2019 might be a huge year for Williams thanks to a bit of subtraction. Tyrell Williams departed for Oakland, and his 65 targets from last season will now be spread out amongst those who are left, most likely Mike Williams. Assuming Melvin Gordon returns to the lineup, Williams could be one of the very best "third" options in the league this year and could easily turn into an undercover superstar.

Los Angeles Chargers WR Mike Williams says he is preparing to take on an expanded role in 2019. 'We lost a big weapon in Tyrell (Williams), (so) a lot of people in the room have to step up,' Williams said Friday, June 14, on the the final day of the team's minicamp. 'I feel like me being the player that I am, I feel like I can do that... I feel like the role is going to change. I feel I'm going to get a lot more opportunities than I did last year. A lot more balls coming my way. I'm looking forward to it.'

Fantasy Spin: Williams was uber-productive last season as an NFL sophomore with 10 of his 43 receptions resulting in touchdowns and a league-best 83.7 percent of his catches going for first downs. Expect more targets and receptions for Williams this season but do expect a TD rate regression. He's a solid WR3.

Feb 28 9:23pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers WR Mike Williams has the ability to catch 100 passes a year, according to general manager Tom Telesco, but Telesco said the offense has too many weapons for Williams to reach those type of numbers.

Fantasy Spin: Williams finished with just 664 receiving yards in 2018, but he hauled in 10 touchdowns. He should be a dangerous weapon in the red zone again next year, but he's likely a touchdown-dependent WR3 with Keenan Allen and Melvin Gordon also in the fold.
