2019 RTSports Outlook

Michel had a very productive rookie season. He had a few nagging injuries that kept him out of three games, but produced big when on the field. He had four 100-yard games and was 69 yards shy of a 1,000-yard season. He showed his big potential in the playoffs, though, rushing for 336 yards and six touchdowns in three games. Michel was a difference maker for as the lead back for the Patriots. He did get very little work in the passing game, having seven receptions on 11 targets. Expect him to play a similar role this year for the Patriots, serving as the lead back but getting little work in passing situations. Michel is an explosive back that does great work in space. He is a big-play threat capable of a huge play every time he touches the ball. He catches the ball well out of the backfield despite not getting much work in that area last season. He does well as a runner on the outside or between the tackles.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Michel would have a little more value if caught some more passes, but he still should be considered a low-end No. 1 back or solid No. 2. He is going to get his yards and scores in this offense. Michel can finish with around 1,300 total yards, double-digit scores and 20 receptions.

RotoBaller's Outlook

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel was a surprise first-round selection in 2018, as the team is known for rotating RBs and treating them as disposable commodities. With a high draft investment, it seemed as if Michel might become a focal point of the offense. After a slow start due to limited training camp, Michel indeed carried the ball 25, 18, and 24 times between Weeks 4-6 and averaged 105.3 yards with four touchdowns in those games. He was then bitten by the injury bug again, missing a couple of games before resuming his role as the RB1. He wasn't quite as effective upon return, averaging 72.7 yards and scoring twice in the final seven games. His lack of involvement as a pass-catcher (seven receptions all year) limited his appeal in PPR leagues as well. Then the playoffs came and Michel was utterly dominant, racking up 336 yards and scoring six TD in three games en route to another New England Super Bowl victory.Michel was inconsistent but also flashed superior talent and remains on one of the best offenses in the NFL. While his floor isn't as safe as many other backs who play on third downs, Michel is at least a top-20 RB everywhere and can be moved higher in standard-scoring formats. The addition of Damien Harris might concern some but he shouldn't eat into early-down touches, but rather serve as a long-term replacement for Rex Burkhead. If Michel can keep seeing 20+ touches per game, his upside is that of a low-end fantasy RB1. He is best targeted in the fourth round but an argument can be made for him as a third-round value for those skeptical of backs like Damien Williams and Derrick Henry.

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel will take on a Bengals Defense in Week 15 that is allowing the eighth most fantasy points to opposing backs this season. But Michel has completely fallen off the fantasy map as of late, totaling only 15 carries for 53 yards over his last two games. Matters got so bad for Michel last week that James White, Brandon Bolden and Rex Burkhead all saw more carries in the game than him. The second-year running back has been a major disappointment this season and pinning your fantasy hopes on him as a starter in Week 15 would be a mistake.

From RotoBaller

Dec 9 1:43am ET

New England Patriots RB Sony Michel ran five times for eight yards in Week 14 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Fantasy Spin: For the fourth time this season, Michel rushed for fewer than 20 yards, and his five carries were fewer than James White or Rex Burkhead. Following a promising rookie campaign, the former Bulldog has endured a sophomore slump. At fantasy playoff time, you should think long and hard about inserting Michel in your lineup, even in a flex role.

From TheHuddle

Dec 8 9:30pm ET

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel carried the ball only five times for eight yards in the Patriots 23-17 loss to the Chiefs. The second-year running back was completely phased out of the team's offensive game plan as the Patriots search for an offensive identity. His fantasy value, in turn, has reached a new low as James White, Rex Burkhead and Brandon Bolden all out-rushed Michel. The talented back has lost so much fantasy luster over the last month that fantasy owners may need to consider dropping him in favor of higher upside options moving forward.

From RotoBaller

Dec 6 5:00pm ET

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel will have a promising matchup against a Chiefs Defense that is allowing the second most fantasy points to running backs this season. Michel has been one of the most frustrating backs in the NFL this season and is averaging only 3.5 yards per carry in his second season. He will have an opportunity to post a solid line in Week 14 as the Chiefs have allowed nine-plus fantasy points to 16 different runners this season. The only caveat is the sudden emergence of James White last week, which could siphon snaps away from Michel. The second-year running back will be a risky RB3 in Week 14.

From RotoBaller

Dec 2 2:53am ET

New England Patriots RB Sony Michel had 10 carries for 45 yards in Week 13 against the Houston Texans.

Fantasy Spin: For the third time in four weeks, Michel had 10 carries or less, something that happened just once in the first eight. It's clearly a disappointing trend of Michel, who sometimes cedes early-down touches to Rex Burkhead and steps aside for James White in passing situations. Right now Michel is no more than a risky RB3.

From TheHuddle

Dec 2 12:40am ET

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel carried the ball 10 times for 45 yards in the Patriots 28-22 loss to the Texans. New England trailed by multiple scores throughout the game which pretty much eliminated Michel from the offensive mix. The second-year running back's lack of catching ability severely hampers what he can bring on the field and from a fantasy perspective. Michel will be a dicey play next week against the Chiefs and their high-powered offense.

From RotoBaller

Nov 26 6:40pm ET

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel will face a Texans Defense in Week 13 that is allowing the 11th most fantasy points to running backs this season. The Texans have been tough on the run most of the season but have allowed 100-yard rushing games to two different runners the past two weeks. It has been a frustrating season for Michel, who enters this weekend with 600 rushing yards and six touchdowns this season. But second-year back is averaging only 3.4 yards per carry and three of those scores came in one game. Michel will be looking for his first touchdown since October 21 and will be, no more, than a middling RB3 option in most formats for Week 13.

From RotoBaller

Nov 25 12:43am ET

New England Patriots RB Sony Michel ran for 85 yards on 20 carries in Week 12 against the Dallas Cowboys.

Fantasy Spin: Michel was actually running well early, but the Patriots' struggles up front started to rear their ugly head again as the game progressed. Because he doesn't contribute much in the passing game and isn't breaking many long runs, the second-year back is heavily reliant on his ability to find the end zone for his fantasy value - something he hasn't done in four straight games. He'll be a boom/bust RB3 yet again in Week 13 when the Patriots visit the Houston Texans.

From TheHuddle

Nov 25 12:40am ET

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel carried the ball 20 times for 85 yards in the Patriots 13-9 win over the Cowboys. Rain pelted the two teams for a good portion of the game and Michel got off to a strong start running the ball. The game was tailor-made for Michel to have a huge day but was unable to find the end zone. With a powerful defense on the other side of the ball, the Patriots offense has little issue with playing conservatively when it's necessary. Unfortunately, this may doom Michel's stability as a fantasy asset the rest of the season.

From RotoBaller

Nov 22 6:30pm ET

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel should see plenty of carries in the team's Week 12 battle against the Cowboys on Sunday. Whether Michel can produce with his opportunities is another question and will face a Cowboys Defense that is allowing the 15th most fantasy points to opposing backs. They have allowed three rushing touchdowns to running backs over their last five games and it has been three games since Michel last found the end zone. With rain in the forecast on Sunday, Michel could be in line for 15-20 touches. But his lack of production this season makes him no more than a low-end RB2/3 play in Week 12.

From RotoBaller

Nov 18 2:53am ET

New England Patriots RB Sony Michel rushed for 33 yards on 10 carries and added two receptions for 11 yards in Week 11 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Fantasy Spin: Same story, different week for his fantasy owners. Michel has been a touchdown-dependent RB2 for most of the season, but he has been nearly unusable whenever Rex Burkhead has been active. Owners should consider other alternatives in Week 12 when the Patriots host the Dallas Cowboys.

From TheHuddle

Nov 17 8:10pm ET

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel had another quiet game in Week 11, rushing the ball 10 times for 33 yards and adding two catches for 11 yards on four targets. He's now failed to reach 50 yards from scrimmage in three of his past four games. Michel has been a headache for fantasy owners all year. He has six rushing touchdowns on the year, but half of them came in one game. No other Patriots running backs had over five carries in Week 11, which is promising for Michel. He's a low-end RB2 most weeks going forward. He'll look to bounce back against the Cowboys in Week 12.

From RotoBaller

Nov 14 1:30am ET

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel will try and get his season on track against the Eagles in Week 11. It won't be easy as the Eagles Defense has allowed the eighth fewest fantasy points to opposing backs this season. Outside of the Cowboys Ezekiel Elliott rushing for 111 yards against them in Week 7, no other running back has posted more than 63 rushing yards in a single game. Michel's fantasy status has been saved by his six rushing touchdowns this season but must drastically improve upon his 3.3 yards per carry. The second-year running back could disappoint with this difficult matchup in Week 11.

From RotoBaller

Nov 4 12:53am ET

New England Patriots RB Sony Michel had just four carries for 18 yards against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 9. Michel also caught a 12-yard pass.

Fantasy Spin: Michel has been pretty solid this season, but Sunday night was the third time this year he's basically done nothing: he ran for 14 yards in Week 1, 11 in Week 3 and then 18 tonight. What do those games have in common? A healthy Rex Burkhead. The veteran cuts into Michel's touches every time he plays, making the Georgia product far more volatile than backfield mate James White. That's shaping up to be a potential problem for fantasy owners during the upcoming stretch run.

From TheHuddle

Nov 4 12:30am ET

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel totaled only 30 yards from scrimmage in the Patriots 37-20 loss to the Ravens in Week 9. Michel saw only four carries in the game for 18 rushing yards and lost snaps in the second half to running back James White. Michel has posted some solid fantasy performances this season but it has been mostly a mediocre mixed bag of production. His six rushing touchdowns this season have stabilized his numbers but he now has three games of 18 rushing yards or less. Michel and the Patriots offense will need to regroup during their bye in Week 10.

From RotoBaller

Nov 1 3:40pm ET

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel will go up against a Ravens Defense that is allowing the ninth fewest fantasy points to opposing runners this season. Michel's season is slowly rounding into shape but could struggle to post a top fantasy line in Week 9. The second-year running back is still looking for his first 100-yard game of the season but the Ravens have allowed only one 100-yard rushing game to an opposing back this season. Michel has six touchdowns this season and will need one in Week 9 if he hopes to post RB2-type numbers against the Ravens.

From RotoBaller

Oct 27 7:50pm ET

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel carried the ball 21 times for 74 yards in the Patriots 27-13 win over the Browns in Week 8. Michel dominated the backfield carries once again this week but averaged only 3.5 yards per carry. The second-year running back, however, is now averaging 19 carries a game over his last five contests with four touchdowns. He may not be gashing opposing defenses but has been solid and the unquestioned lead runner in the Patriots backfield moving forward.

From RotoBaller

Oct 24 3:50pm ET

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel will have a juicy matchup against the Browns in Week 8. Michel is coming off of a three-touchdown performance against the Jets and now has six scores on the season. The second-year back will go up against a Browns Defense that is allowing the seventh most fantasy points to running backs, including four touchdowns to the position over their last two games. Michel is slowly rounding into shape and will be on the RB2 radar in Week 8.

From RotoBaller

Oct 22 2:50am ET

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel carried the ball 19 times for 42 yards with three touchdowns in the Patriots 33-0 win over the Jets. Michel again struggled with consistency in the running game but found himself back in the mix in the Patriots red zone offense. Michel is averaging only 3.3 yards per carry this season but now has six rushing touchdowns. The second-year back was losing out in the red zone the past few games but cashed in big-time in Week 7. Michel's arrow is pointing up moving forward.

From RotoBaller

Oct 21 11:43pm ET

New England Patriots RB Sony Michel (undisclosed) rushed 19 times for just 42 yards in Week 7 against the New York Jets, but he did run for three touchdowns. Michel was nicked late in the fourth quarter, leaving with an undisclosed injury. DT Folorunso Fatukasi landed on Michel awkwardly while making a tackle, and Michel walked off slowly under his own power.

Fantasy Spin: Michel found the end zone frequently, and that was nice even if the yardage wasn't very high per carry. We'll keep an eye on his injury. As long as he is healthy, he remains a solid RB2 or flex fantasy option in most leagues against the Cleveland Browns in Week 8.
