2020 RTSports Outlook

Lindsay had a similar second season to his rookie year, finishing with 1,207 total yards and seven touch-downs. He was 20th overall in fantasy running back scoring. He topped 1,000-rushing yards for the se-cond straight season. His yards per carry did go down some, though, averaging 4.5 yards per carry com-pared to 5.4 yards in year one. He had the exact same number of receptions (35). Lindsay is joined by Melvin Gordon in the backfield this year, which is going to cut into this playing time. Lindsay is a very small back but is super quick and has electric moves in space. You do have to wonder about him holding up because of his small stature, but that hasn't slowed him much in two years. He also catches the ball well and is a willing blocker in pass protection.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Lindsay is not an elite fantasy back, especially with Gordon cutting into his playing time, but should be considered a low-end No. 2 back for fantasy teams. He'll get his total yards and has touchdown poten-tial. Lindsay is an injury risk and he has some talent to compete with for touches. He can get around 1,000 total yards, seven scores and 30 receptions.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Phillip Lindsay burst onto the scene in 2018 as an undrafted free agent out of Colorado and managed a Pro Bowl selection on 192 carries, 1,037 rushing yards, nine rushing TDs, 35 receptions, 241 receiving yards and one receiving score. His yards-per-carry average dropped from 5.4 to 4.5 in 2019, but he had another 35 receptions and broke the 1,000-yard mark for the second straight year. What has that gotten him going into 2020? A demotion as a change-of-pace player to free-agent signing Melvin Gordon III. The shifty 5-foot-8, 190-pounder will continue to be involved, but his touches are expected to take a noticeable hit as long as Gordon remains healthy. There will be some mid-round appeal in PPR leagues, but Lindsay will mostly be considered as a handcuff for Gordon owners.

Denver Broncos running back Phillip Lindsay wasn't as good in his second season as he was in his rookie campaign, but the former undrafted free agent still had 1,011 rushing yards in 2019 despite playing with three different quarterbacks. He had 48 runs of 15-plus mph last year despite defenses keying on him in the box most of the time. The offseason addition of Melvin Gordon III makes it basically impossible for Lindsay to see the 224 carries he saw last season, but he remains an explosive change-of-pace for this improved backfield. His fantasy stock is down across the board because of Gordon's presence as the lead back, but Lindsay still has some standalone fantasy appeal as a low-end RB3/flex in PPR leagues.

Denver Broncos running back Phillip Lindsay, who is coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons under two different offensive coordinators, thinks new coordinator Pat Shurmur's offense fits him even better. "I just think that it's what fits my style, and I've been able to adapt to every style, but I think that this style right here is something that is going to fit me, kind of like how my rookie year was. I'm excited about that," Lindsay said. However, the Broncos added Melvin Gordon III in free agency and believe that he also fits their offensive scheme very well. Lindsay had offseason wrist surgery but said is fully healthy. He'll be motivated whenever the team is allowed to practice together. He'll have a role in this offense as a 1B to Gordon's 1A, but his fantasy stock has fallen because of Gordon's addition. Target Lindsay as a low-end RB3/flex.

Denver Broncos general manager John Elway was non-committal on whether the Broncos would entertain signing running back Phillip Lindsay to a long-term contract extension. Lindsay has been playing for a bargain rate the last two seasons after going undrafted, but not the Broncos had Melvin Gordon III in the backfield as well after they landed him in free agency. In comparison, Gordon is the sixth-highest paid running back in the league. Lindsay, 26 in July, came out of nowhere in his rookie season and made the Pro Bowl, and he's rushed for over 1,000 yards in both of his two seasons. But with Gordon now in tow, Lindsay won't see as many touches, especially in the passing game. It's clear the Broncos don't see him as a three-down back in this league, but they could still keep him around long-term if they can agree on something that compensates him fairly. Fantasy-wise, Lindsay will likely become a low-ceiling RB3/flex in standard-scoring formats while sharing touches with Gordon and Royce Freeman.

The Denver Broncos aren't prioritizing a contract extension for running back Phillip Lindsay as they work through the early part of the offseason. Lindsay is eligible for a new contract after just his second season because he was an undrafted free agent. He'll count only $665,000 against the salary cap in 2020. Lindsay has ranked ninth in the NFL in rushing yards (2,048), 13th in attempts (416) and is tied for 11th in rushing touchdowns (16) in the last two seasons. Denver could do a deal with Lindsay if they have leftover salary cap space. Lindsay's fantasy upside is a bit capped as long as he continues to share the backfield with Royce Freeman, but he still has RB2/3 appeal in the majority of leagues.
