2022 RTSports Outlook

Lance didn't play much his rookie season, getting a chance to learn from Jimmy Garoppolo. He started two games and finished with six total touchdowns to two interceptions. He had 21-plus fantasy points in two of the games he played, showing his big-time fantasy potential in a starting role. He should start from day one this year in a very good 49ers offense. Lance is just a playmaker - making plays with his arm and legs. Lance has a great arm and can make all the throws. He also is a very good runner, having similar ability to Lamar Jackson. Lance lacks some accuracy, though, and has little experience. He remains raw and could show some struggles along the way.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Lance has a huge celling and could finish as a top-10 fantasy quarterback if things go well for him this year. We would draft him as a high-end No. 2 or at least pair him with another good option be safe. He is no sure thing. Look for around 3,500-passing yards, 700-rushing yards and 30 total scores with 13 or so interceptions.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Ignore all the noise around Jimmy Garoppolo possibly being the 49ers' starting quarterback come Week 1 of the 2022 season. San Francisco didn't trade a haul for the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft to select Trey Lance and have him sit for two years being Garoppolo. Here's why he'll be successful as the starter, at least from a fantasy football perspective. Last season, Lance started just two games and played a half of a third game. If you take the stats from all three games, he averaged a respectable 18 fantasy points per game. That would have been good for QB13 on the season, and that was with playing just a half in one of the games. Lance completed just 57.1% of his passes in those three games for 199.3 yards per game. He threw four total touchdowns and two interceptions. The difference-maker, however, is Lance's rushing ability. He rushed 10.3 times for 53.7 yards per game. He didn't score a single rushing touchdown in those three games but still managed to put up high-end QB2 numbers. Last season, Jalen Hurts performed similarly in his 15 starts to Lance in his three games played. Hurts averaged just north of 200 passing yards per game, completed just 61.3% of his passes, and had nearly a 2:1 touchdown to interception ratio. His QB rating was just 87.2, compared to Lance who had a higher QB rating of 97.3. Yet, the 52.3 rushing yards on 9.3 attempts per game and 10 total touchdowns on the ground propelled Hurts to a QB6 finish in his first year as a full-time starter. Lance may not score 10 rushing touchdowns, but if he's going to average anywhere close to 10 rushing attempts per game, he's bound to score using his legs. And don't forget the 49ers have arguably two of the most impactful skill players on the offensive side of the ball in Deebo Samuel and George Kittle. Those rushing yards and rushing touchdowns alone will give him a floor of a low-end QB1 in 2022.

Dynasty | 49ers quarterback Trey Lance was solid in limited snaps in the team's first action of the preseason Dynasty Analysis: Lance totaled 92 yards on 4-of-5 passing, highlighted by a 76 yard touchdown to rookie Danny Gray in the first quarter. Other than that, Lance's performance was nondescript but was generally a positive first game. Lance will continue to be a hot item to watch as the preseason unfolds and is found as DLF's QB8, showing that the dynasty community holds high expectations for the second-year player.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance finished Saturday's training camp practice with a flourish, but it didn't carry over to Sunday. He completed just four of his 12 passes on Sunday, which included a bad interception that was forced during the final period of the day. However, according to receiver Brandon Aiyuk, Lance was not fazed by his performance and talked to teammates about the plays he wanted back and how he could improve going forward. It shows Lance's maturity at a young age, but even though the Niners believe he's their long-term answer at the position, they're unsure how well he'll play in his first full year as the starter in 2022. The 22-year-old will surely have his ups and downs, but his dual-threat abilities give him low-end QB1 upside right away.

The San Francisco 49ers definitely believe they will eventually be better with quarterback Trey Lance, but in the short term, they understand that Lance will have growing pains and lack consistency from game to game. Lance hasn't played a full season since 2019, when he was on the field for 949 snaps at North Dakota State. It's why he sat behind Jimmy Garoppolo last year after being the third overall pick in the draft. The repetitions he receives this year will help him improve for the future. The Niners believe the 22-year-old can be one of the best QBs in the league, but they're entering the 2022 season with a degree of uncertainty about how he'll play. Fantasy managers should have similar view this year, but Lance's dual-threat abilities gives him QB1 upside in the right matchups in his first full year as the team's starter.

Dynasty | 49ers third-year receiver Brandon Aiyuk struggled during OTAs and minicamp this off-season Dynasty Analysis: Aiyuk was outplayed by Ray-Ray McCloud, struggled with drops and didn't establish chemistry with expected starter Trey Lance. If this continues into training camp, it could be another down year for the once promising first-round selection. Aiyuk was in head coach Kyle Shanahan's doghouse early in 2021 and while he improved late in the season, his 84/826/5 stat-line was underwhelming at best. There's still plenty of time to get right during training camp but the clock may be ticking on Aiyuk, DLF's WR33.

Contrary to a previous report, a member of the San Francisco 49ers coaching staff said that quarterback Trey Lance hasn't been dealing with "arm fatigue." "I've never heard anything about that a day in my life," the unnamed staff member said. There have been reports that there are some concerns about Lance's arm health within the organization, but this seems to refute any of that. Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) has yet to be traded this offseason, but it's still expected that the Niners will go with Lance as the starter under center to begin the regular season in 2022. But if training camp begins and Jimmy G is still around, there could be a little QB controversy in San Francisco. Lance is an exciting dual-threat talent both in real life in fantasy, and he'll be a high-end backup option for fantasy managers if he's the unquestioned starter this year.

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings emerged as one of the team's most reliable targets on third down and in the red zone, but that didn't happen until late in the year. Jennings had 16 catches for 212 yards in the final five games, with 11 of those going for either a touchdown or a first down. He's carried that momentum into this offseason and has displayed an easy chemistry with quarterback Trey Lance that has made Jennings one of Lance's favorite red-zone targets. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Jennings has had his best offseason since entering the league in 2020 as a seventh-rounder out of Tennessee. The 24-year-old finished last year with 24 receptions on 38 targets for 282 yards and five touchdowns in 16 games (one start). A third-year breakout could be coming, especially if San Francisco trades Deebo Samuel.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (finger) injured his right index finger in a preseason game last year, and although it didn't keep him from playing in the regular season, he admitted it impacted him when he threw the football. Lance said he focused more on getting healthy this offseason than adjusting any of his mechanics. "But now, I feel like I'm in a great spot, health-wise, and throwing the ball well, and feeling really good," Lance said. It remains to be seen if the Niners will trade Jimmy Garoppolo before training camp, but with Garoppolo still rehabbing from shoulder surgery, Lance will handle all the first-team repetitions during organized team activities and is still expected to be the team's starting signal-caller come Week 1 of the regular season.

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle said it's a toss-up for him when it comes to who he prefers as the starting quarterback in 2022 between second-year signal-caller Trey Lance and veteran Jimmy Garoppolo. "That's the million-dollar question, isn't it?" Kittle said. "That's one reason I'm glad I'm not the head coach of the 49ers. That's all on coach Shanahan. I'll give you both ways. Jimmy G, awesome in the huddle, great leader, directs guys. People go to attention when he's talking. He's got a quick release, he knows the offense. Like I said, been to two NFC Championship games, knows what he's doing. Trey Lance can run, extend plays, does all the play-action stuff incredible, could throw the ball 70 yards. I don't know. It's a toss-up for me." Garoppolo's recovery from offseason surgery will go a long way in deciding whether he's traded before training camp this summer.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance has received plenty of negative press over the last few months. However, despite the unfavorable publicity, tight end George Kittle recently went to bat for the signal-caller. When asked about having Lance under center this season, Kittle was all for it, exclaiming, "it's going to be pretty exciting." The former Bison appeared in six games during his inaugural year, throwing for 603 yards and rushing for 168 yards. He also accounted for six total touchdowns, although he tossed two interceptions and completed only 57.7% of his passing attempts. Nonetheless, while receiving a vote of confidence from Kittle is certainly a good thing for the 22-year-old, it still doesn't mean he'll start this season. But even if he does, he has a way to go before earning the trust of fantasy managers.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance is believed by many to be the team's starter this season. However, according to NFL reporter Matt Lombardo, the Niners' staff has reportedly been "underwhelmed" by him. There have also been consistent rumblings regarding the 2021 No. 3 overall pick's lack of development, so it seems that his role could change heading into the 2022-23 campaign. The scenario becomes even more intriguing with Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) remaining on the roster. Garoppolo had surgery on his throwing shoulder in March, and while it was widely believed the signal-caller would have been gone by now, many teams weren't looking to make a move for a player who may be out until training camp. Nonetheless, this presumably isn't the last fantasy managers will hear about this situation moving forward.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance is under the impression he will be the team's starter this season, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. The Niners are reportedly pleased with Lance's development this offseason, so it seems logical that the sophomore will be atop the depth chart in 2022-23. The market also hasn't been favorable for a Jimmy Garoppolo trade, although he will likely support the young signal-caller if he's not dealt by then. Nonetheless, the 21-year-old had an excellent collegiate career and has the potential to be a potent quarterback. However, it won't do him any favors if Deebo Samuel isn't on the roster.

From RotoBaller

Mar 2 1:30pm ET

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch said the team is loving the development of quarterback Trey Lance, which is why the Niners are still intent on trading Jimmy Garoppolo despite a recent shoulder surgery. Despite Lance making only two starts in his rookie season, Lynch thought he had an outstanding first year in the NFL. "He's everything we thought he was when we traded a lot to go get him," Lynch said. The 21-year-old looked a little shaky in the six games he played in 2021, but his arm strength is off the charts, and he can also make big plays with his legs, if needed. Lance will surely have some ups and downs as the full-time starter in 2022, but his dual-threat upside will give him QB1 potential in the right matchups in fantasy next season.
