2022 RTSports Outlook

Wentz had a solid first season with the Colts, finishing 14th overall in fantasy quarterback scoring. He did have some struggles late in the year, though, when the Colts needed him most to qualify for a playoff spot. Wentz had fewer than 190-passing yards four of his last five games and just a touchdown four of those games. The good was earlier in the season for Wentz, having eight games with 20-plus fantasy points. Wentz had multiple touchdowns nine games, showing his consistency in this offense. Wentz should remain the starter but might be on a much shorter leash going forward after his finishing to last year. Wentz has 28-plus touchdowns three of five seasons. Wentz is a big quarterback with a plus arm but also has the athletic ability to make plays with his legs. He normally limits turnovers and completes a high percentage of his passes. Injuries are always a concern for Wentz, playing a full season just three times.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Wentz isn't flashy but a consistent fantasy quarterback. If you want to go the platoon route at quarterback, Wentz is a player to consider. He should be top 15 once again, having plenty of big games along the way. Wentz can throw for 3,700 yards and get around 30 total scores with 10 interceptions.

RotoBaller's Outlook

After one season with the Indianapolis Colts, quarterback Carson Wentz was traded to the Washington Commanders for draft picks this offseason. Last year was a tale of two halves for Wentz. He scored as a top-10 fantasy quarterback for the first nine weeks while throwing for 17 touchdowns and three interceptions. The former No.2 overall pick averaged 18.6 fantasy points per game. He threw 10 touchdowns and three interceptions in the final eight games, averaging 12.2 fantasy points per game. Wentz finished the season as QB13. Now Wentz is in Washington, where his weapons are wide receiversTerry McLaurin,Curtis Samuel,Cam Sims,Dyami Brown; tight endLogan Thomasif he returns and stays healthy; and running backsAntonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic. According to Fantasy Pros, Wentz has the fourth easiest quarterback schedule. His current ADP is #156. FFPC best ball drafters are taking Wentz an average of 25th among quarterbacks. In 2021 Washington threw the ball 55% of the time in neutral situations (21st), and they ranked 20th in neutral pace. There is no reason to believe they will suddenly become a team that airs the ball out, as Wentz has the 21st passing grade with the 32nd adjusted completion rate per Pro Football Focus. In 2021, the 29-year-old ranked 16th in pass attempts, 10th in touchdown passes, 15th among quarterbacks in rushing yards, and 14th in total fantasy points. He also ranked in the bottom half of quarterbacks in average depth of throws and finished 32nd overall on-target percentage. Wentz was 21st among all qualified passers as only 54.3% of his throws 15-yards or more were considered on-target passes (per Sports Info Solutions). The former Philadelphia Eagle has not averaged more than 20 fantasy points since 2018. His ceiling is game dependent. In single quarterback redraft, he is a streaming option best to pick up on waivers. Wentz is an option in Superflex and Two-QB leagues if you can get him in the late rounds as your third quarterback to plug and play.

Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz's inaccuracy concerns have followed him to Washington with an assortment pack of misfires in training camp. Wentz has routinely bricked passes in various directions in practices with no defense on the field. It hasn't been an every-play issue for Wentz, and his strong arm opens up more downfield plays in the team's playbook, but his accuracy issues are a real concern. He's still learning offensive coordinator Scott Turner's system and what to expect from his receivers, so perhaps Wentz will gain more consistency as training camp and the preseason progress. For what it's worth, head coach Ron Rivera said the team isn't "overly concerned" about Wentz, but fantasy managers may be avoiding him as a QB2 in fantasy drafts. Wentz will play in the team's preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers.

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz has been 'consistently inconsistent' in training camp and is having accuracy issues, according to The Washington Post's Sam Fortier on Sunday, Aug. 7.

Fantasy Spin: We would normally chalk this up to him being in a new offense, but Wentz's well-documented issues the past few years doesn't lend for giving him the benefit of the doubt in most cases. We're penciling in Wentz as a QB2 but wouldn't depend on him as an every-week starter.

From TheHuddle

Jul 27 6:30pm ET

Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz didn't throw into traffic when under duress at training camp practice on Wednesday, but he struggled to make plays at times when under pressure, even without the threat of being hit. It's a weakness that he's shown with the Eagles and Colts in his past stops. Even short passes to running backs went wide or short on Wednesday. On the flip side, he flashed his powerful arm and showed a good connection with Terry McLaurin, who missed offseason workouts due to his contract situation. The 29-year-old has a new opportunity in D.C. and some weapons to work with, but until he proves otherwise, he should be seen as a low-end QB2 in fantasy.

Dynasty | The Commanders signed receiver Terry McLaurin to a three-year extension placing him among the top-five receivers in the NFL Dynasty Analysis: The Commanders absolutely needed to secure the services of McLaurin beyond 2022 and this gets the job done. Saying he's "humbled and ecstatic" he also went on to say that he's motivated to "work even harder." In his age-27 season, McLaurin has quietly produced two back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns, though has only scored nine touchdowns over the two seasons. It's hard to predict what type of season 'Scary Terry' can muster with new quarterback Carson Wentz under-center, but there's no question he'll remain the WR1 and garner plenty of targets. He's listed as DLF's WR16.

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz impressed the team with a strong arm, his worth ethics and his cognitive abilities. 'There's a lot of different things he's capable of doing,' offensive coordinator Scott Turner said. 'Obviously a very skilled player. You see him out at practice, he's a big, physical guy. He can really push the ball down the field.'

Fantasy Spin: Wentz is a QB2 in fantasy without a lot of upside to be much more.

Washington Commanders center Chase Roullier (leg) expects to be good to go for training camp. While the 28-year-old acknowledged he still has "some strides" to overcome, it appears he's moving in the right direction to be ready for Week 1 in September. Roullier is considered one of the best in the league at the position, so when the team lost him for the remainder of last season due to a fractured left fibula, it struggled to fill the void. However, his anticipated return will undoubtedly make life easier for Carson Wentz, Antonio Gibson, J.D. McKissic, and Terry McLaurin in 2022-23.

Jun 17 4:00pm ET

Washington Commanders new quarterback Carson Wentz has fit right in with the offense during offseason workouts. "I think probably the biggest thing in terms of watching Carson is how he got acclimated to us," head coach Ron Rivera said. Wentz hasn't been perfect this offseason, but his skill set is allowing the team do things that they couldn't last year. He has been pushing the ball downfield and giving his receivers chances to make plays while also establishing rapport with teammates. The Commanders have been impressed with how fast he's learned the playbook as well. Take it with a grain of salt during non-padded practices, but the 29-year-old will have some weapons to work with in D.C. But after his epic collapse in Indy last year, fantasy managers should be treating him as a low-end QB2 until he proves otherwise.

Dynasty | Commanders receiver Terry McLaurin will not be in attendance for the team's minicamp Dynasty Analysis: There's little surprise here as the team and McLaurin wrestle over a new desired contract. The team remains in a difficult position as they cannot afford another large contract and, what with the recent huge contracts provided to other big-name receivers, the trend is certainly not the friend for the Commanders or McLaurin. It's the proverbial rock and a hard place situation for all involved. New quarterback Carson Wentz needs time to establish chemistry with the team's most productive receiver and the lost time will delay that from occurring. As long as the holdout doesn't extend into training camp, there should be little concern for dynasty coaches. He's listed as DLF's WR16.

New Washington Commanders starting quarterback Carson Wentz took his first practice reps with the team during its first on-field workouts on Tuesday. He connected with the overall No. 16 pick in the draft, wide receiver Jahan Dotson, as well as second-year wide receiver Dyami Brown, for solid gains. Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jonathan Allen offered his praise regarding the impact Wentz is making right from the start. "He's everything you want from your starting quarterback," Allen said. "He's a leader. He talks to every guy on the team, not just the receivers or the running backs or the offensive line. He talks to the defensive guys, and he wants to be here, and he wants to win. Really not much more I could ask from him." Ben Standig of The Athletic reported how Wentz immediately stood out relative to last year's starter, Taylor Heinicke, due to his size and arm strength, while hinting that his velocity on both deep routes and underneath throws should expand the offensive playbook.

The Washington Commanders selected Penn State wide receiver Jahan Dotson with the No. 16 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft on Thursday night. Dotson was named to the first-team All-Big Ten team in his senior season and will pair nicely with Terry McLaurin in D.C. He has elite speed and will give quarterback Carson Wentz a deep threat in his rookie season, but fantasy managers shouldn't expect too much from Dotson too quickly. Dotson played 23.7% of his snaps out of the slot in 2021, but he projects as more of a traditional receiver that will occasionally see snaps out of the slot for Washington. He checks in at 5-foot-11 and 184 pounds, so Dotson could struggle initially at the next level.

The Philadelphia Eagles, who have two first-round picks in the first round of Thursday's NFL draft, have been among the most notable teams making calls about moving up. "Potentially, would a corner be someone they'd be targeting? Would it be an edge rusher? What if (Oregon edge rusher Kayvon) Thibodeaux slid? Lot of options here for the Philadelphia Eagles," NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said. The Eagles have an extra pick thanks to the Carson Wentz trade from a year ago, and they could take advantage of it this year. This year's draft class is loaded with edge-rushing and receiving talent, and the Eagles have room to make quality additions at both positions.

From RotoBaller

Apr 22 12:10pm ET

The Washington Commanders don't view quarterback Carson Wentz as a bridge quarterback or experimental fix, and head coach Ron Rivera downplayed the team's interest in grabbing a QB in the first round of the draft after the team traded for Wentz this offseason. Rivera said that Wentz could be a long-term fit, which could mean that the team will look to add playmakers and depth at other positions in next week's draft. The Commanders need help in the secondary and at wide receiver, and they could also use a middle linebacker and another guard. Wentz was one and done with the Indianapolis Colts, throwing for 3,563 yards, 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 17 games, and he won't be all that attractive for fantasy managers in D.C. without a ton of weapons to throw to.

Indianapolis Colts QB Carson Wentz was officially traded to the Washington Commanders Wednesday, March 16, in exchange for a 2022 second-round draft choice, a 2022 third-round draft choice and a conditional 2023 third-round draft choice.

From TheHuddle

The Washington Commanders released defensive back Landon Collins and defensive lineman Matt Ioannidis on Wednesday. ESPN's Adam Schefter also reports that the team released offensive lineman Ereck Flowers. Collins and the Commanders were unable to agree on a restructured contract after he played out three years of a six-year, $84 million deal signed in 2019. His release will save the team $6.5 million with $9.6 million in dead money. Ioannidis was in the final year of a four-year contract, and his release will save Washington $6.88 million. He should be able to land another starting gig on the open market. The Commanders needed to free up more salary cap space after trading for quarterback Carson Wentz last week.

Updating a previous report, the Indianapolis Colts will receive the Washington Commanders' 2022 second-rounder choice, a third-round pick, and a 2023 third-round selection that can upgrade to a second-rounder if unspecified incentives are met in exchange for QB Carson Wentz and a 2022 second-round selection.

From TheHuddle

Mar 9 3:00pm ET

The Washington Commanders have acquired quarterback Carson Wentz in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts. While the specifics of the trade have yet to be released, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that two third-round picks will be heading to Indianapolis. The 29-year-old Wentz lasted just one year with the Colts, but had a good amount of success. He played in all 17 regular season games and threw for 3,563 yards, 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Wentz will certainly be an upgrade in Washington, causing No. 1 receiver Terry McLaurin's fantasy value to rise heading into the 2022 season. Meanwhile, expect the Colts to be shopping for a new quarterback either in the draft or via trade or free agency this offseason.

From RotoBaller

Mar 9 2:03pm ET

Indianapolis Colts QB Carson Wentz was acquired by the Washington Commanders Wednesday, March 9, for a package that is believed to include two third-round picks.

Fantasy Spin: Wentz has a couple of weapons around him, but his fantasy value takes a hit leaving Indy. He'll be a meager QB2 that only has upside in two-QB leagues.

From TheHuddle

Mar 9 11:30am ET

Indianapolis Colts Pro Bowl left tackle Eric Fisher isn't expected to re-sign with the team despite the fact that the two sides have spent recent weeks trying to work out a new deal, according to sources. Fisher is poised to hit the open market next week. The 31-year-old two-time Pro Bowler played in 15 games in his first season with the Colts last year. He was better as a run-blocker than a pass-blocker and struggled at times less than 10 months removed from a torn Achilles. If the Colts cannot bring Fisher back, they'll likely have to replace him through either free agency or the draft. Not only are the Colts looking to replace quarterback Carson Wentz, but they could be in the market for a new blind-side protector for their next signal-caller.

From RotoBaller

Mar 1 10:03pm ET

Indianapolis Colts QB Carson Wentz's future with the team remains uncertain, general manager Chris Ballard said Tuesday, March 1. 'Not saying we don't, but in the long-term best interest for us, as we sit down and work through whether Carson's the long-term best answer or not is the best way I can put it,' Ballard said. 'We're not there yet.'

Fantasy Spin: The Colts clearly aren't sold on Wentz as a long-term solution at quarterback, but he may be back under center in 2022 if a better alternative isn't available. There is a good chance Wentz could start somewhere next season, but he's no more than a matchup-based streaming option in most fantasy leagues.

From TheHuddle

Mar 1 2:00pm ET

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz's future with the team is in question this offseason, but he posted photos on Instagram of him working out with wide receivers Michael Pittman Jr. and Dezmon Patmon with the caption, "Another day at the office with the guys." Wentz's entire $22 million base salary becomes guaranteed on March 18, $7 million more than the already $15 million guaranteed for 2022. He's also due a $6.294 million roster bonus. The Colts must decide if they can find an upgrade over Wentz after he threw for fewer than 200 yards in four of the final five games last year. When Indy needed Wentz the most in the season finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars, he fell flat. Owner Jim Irsay might be ready to move on, but it's unclear if the rest of the coaching staff is. Either way, Wentz will be a midrange QB2, at best, if he's starting somewhere in 2022.
