2022 RTSports Outlook

Mariota was the top backup for the Raiders once again and was used more often, getting chances to use his legs to make plays. He got in 10 games and ran 13 times for 87 yards and a touchdown. He attempted just two passes all season. Mariota showed a lot of potential, though, and used that to sign a contract with the Falcons. He will take over as their starter for the coming season. Mariota has not progressed as expected since entering the NFL in 2015, but shown some flashes of good things. Mariota has good size, a great arm and can make plays on the move. He can make all the throws and also runs well at the position. Turnovers are an issue, though, and he still looks indecisive in the pocket.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Mariota always has potential when starting because he can get some yards on the ground in addition to having some success throwing the ball. But even with the said, he won't score much and turnovers are a concern. Plus, the Falcons have few weapons offensively, which is going to limit Mariota on a weekly basis.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Mariota will be going into his eighth season this year. The last two seasons he spent playing backup to Derek Carr in Las Vegas. This season he will spend in Atlanta as presumably the starting quarterback, at least for the first game. And this is the first reason that Mariota's ceiling is low, he will be looking over his shoulder at his replacement Desmond Ridder. The Falcons drafted Ridder with the 74th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Ridder has a high ceiling, but perhaps not with this supporting cast. The second reason Mariota has a low ceiling, are the weapons that surround him. The Falcons will start the season with rookie Drake London (who is coming off a broken ankle injury), running back/wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson and second-year tight end stud Kyle Pitts. A considerable downswing from the Falcons heyday. Last season then quarterback Matt Ryan finished as QB20 averaging 13.82 fantasy points per game, and that was with Russell Gage and for a short time Calvin Ridley. Mariota won't have such luxuries.Fantasypros.com currently has his ADP #190, that may be too high. Mariota has not started a game since 2019 in Tennessee. In that year after six starts he was replaced by Ryan Tannehill. He finished the 2019 season with a 59.4% completion percentage and seven touchdowns with two interceptions. Most are finding hope in Mariota's performance in 2020 against the Los Angeles Chargers. In that game Carr went out with a groin injury and Mariota played over 80% of the offensive snaps. In that Week15 game he attempted 28 passes completing 17 for a 60.7% completion rate. He had one touchdown and one interception. He also had nine rushing attempts for 88 yards and a rushing touchdown. His rushing ability is what fantasy managers are banking on, as Mariota has never been the most accurate passer, his last three season he has a completion percentage of 59.4% in 2019 (seven games), 60.7% in 2020 (one game) and 50.0% in 2021 (nine games). His rushing ability hasn't vaulted him into top-10 fantasy finishes. The two seasons excelled didn't produce fantasy top-10 finishes. In 2015 he rushed for 252 yards on 34 attempts and finished as QB22. The next season he rushed for 349 yards on 60 attempts and finished as QB12 his highest fantasy finish. Last season he rushed 13 times for 87 yards and one touchdown, in nine games.Playing behind an offensive line that allowed 200 pressures and ranked 29th in pass blocking efficiency, per Pro Football Focus will not help. Sharp Football Analysis has the Falcons with the 10th hardest football schedule and a win total of 4.45. Mariota's low ceiling is a reflection of his supporting casts, the rookie breathing down his neck and our inability to depend on his rushing skills.

Dynasty | Falcons quarterback coach Charles London said "Marcus is the starter." Dynasty Analysis: Mariota as the starter has been fully expected but who is under-center come week one of the regular season isn't nearly as important as who is under center by week ten. By all accounts, rookie Desmond Ridder has impressed but there's little way the rookie would be ready for regular season work and he's best served to watch and learn with a hat and clipboard while the game slows down. As for Mariota, as evidenced by his DLF QB36 ranking, there's little expectation he'll remain the starter through 2022.

Jul 29 7:30pm ET

Although it's early in training camp, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota has looked good. Unofficially, he's completed all 24 passes he's thrown so far, but a lot of them have been short throws and he was bailed out a few times on Thursday on nice plays from his tight ends. Rookie third-rounder Desmond Ridder also looks to be getting a handle on the offense early on, but he also held onto the ball too long on multiple occasions. The Falcons will roll with Mariota to begin the 2022 season, but this could be a competition to watch all season long. If Mariota is injured or struggles, the Falcons may not hesitate to throw Ridder in there. Given Atlanta's lack of high-end offensive weapons, Mariota is a QB to avoid outside of deep superflex leagues.

From RotoBaller

Jul 27 9:40pm ET

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota currently owns the starting job, according to assistant coach Charles London. However, London didn't forget to acknowledge rookie signal-caller Desmond Ridder, telling reporters, "Obviously, we've got a plan for each of them." Mariota will be entering his eighth season since being drafted in 2015. Throughout his career, he's compiled 13,437 yards, 77 touchdowns, and 45 interceptions while completing nearly 63% of his throws. Unquestionably, the veteran has had some solid performances over the years. Still, he has also had his fair share of disastrous ones. Mariota probably won't be a consistent fantasy option in 2022-23, but he deserves a spot in most formats, at least as a backup. Yet, if he begins to play poorly at any point during the year, Ridder would likely take his place under center.

Jun 30 11:50pm ET

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota was signed in free agency to be the team's new starter, replacing their long-time leader Matt Ryan. Mariota steps in after backing up Derek Carr for the Raiders the past two seasons, and he's hoping to regain his role as a starter in the NFL. Although his passing statistics were mediocre, he averaged 300-plus yards and three rushing touchdowns over his three seasons as a starter. While there has been concern about newly drafted quarterback Desmond Ridder, who the Falcons selected 74th overall, competing for the starting job, a recent report says Mariota is "far ahead" of Ridder and "injury would be the only way Ridder finds himself under center." This confirms the veteran's stranglehold on the role, which would make him an intriguing option as a streamer or second quarterback in two-quarterback/superflex leagues, given his rushing upside.

From RotoBaller

Jun 30 5:23pm ET

Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota appears to have a big advantage over QB Desmond Ridder for the starting quarterback job entering training camp, according to ESPN.com's Michael Rothstein.

Fantasy Spin: Mariota probably will be the starter Week 1, but it is not known if Ridder will start at some point in 2022. Mariota has some fantasy value because of his running ability but would be a No. 2 quarterback in all fantasy leagues.

Dynasty | Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota has looked like the player who will be starting to begin the season Dynasty Analysis: Recent reports have been that rookie Desmond Ridder has been impressive but not enough to be under-center come week one. It's Mariota's job to lose but the veteran remains on a relatively team-friendly two-year contract, meaning there's little reason to expect the Falcons not to turn to Ridder if, or when, the team falls out of playoff contention. Found as DLF's QB36, it's obvious expectations for Marcus Mariota remain extremely low with little belief he's the answer beyond 2022.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Jun 30 12:13pm ET

Dynasty | Falcons rookie quarterback Desmond Ridder continues to impress this off-season Dynasty Analysis: While Ridder is checking all the boxes thus far, Marcus Mariota is still fully expected to be the starter come week one. Whether he can retain the job is another thing altogether as the veteran has a very team friendly contract which won't present much of a financial hurdle when the time comes to insert Ridder. Ridder is found as DLF's QB34, ahead of Mariota's QB36 ranking, showing that the full expectation that it's "when" and not "if" the rookie is starting at some point during the 2022 season.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Jun 30 11:23am ET

Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota is 'far ahead' of rookie Desmond Ridder entering training camp, in the opinion of ESPN's Michael Rothstein. 'Mariota appears to be far ahead of Ridder right now, and Atlanta brought Mariota in for a reason -- to be the starter at least in the short term because he has familiarity with what coach Arthur Smith wants in the offense. Plus, Mariota has looked sharp through OTAs,' said Rothstein.

Fantasy Spin: Seeing as Ridder was drafted in the third round, it's no surprise that Mariota is trending toward starting Week 1. Mariota's ceiling will be capped due to the lack of weapons in the Falcons offense, but he could turn out to be an interesting streamer or QB2 in superflex formats.

From TheHuddle

Jun 12 1:13pm ET

Dynasty | It's only a matter of time before Falcons rookie quarterback Desmond Ridder is starting Dynasty Analysis: It's not a bold call by the SI author as Ridder was a third-round selection and only has uninspiring Marcus Mariota above him on the depth chart. There's every chance Mariota surprises everyone and becomes a productive starter but word out of camp is that Ridder has been impressive. The bigger issue is the team's lack of experienced receivers outside of last year's first-round selection, tight end Kyle Pitts. If Mariota is going to take a leap, he'll have to do so with, arguably, the worst receiver depth chart in the league, though this year's selection of Drake London does provide upside. As for Ridder, the watch will be on once the team is out of playoff contention and it's not out of the question he wins the starting job outright during training camp.

The Atlanta Falcons plan to run the quarterback more with new signal-caller Marcus Mariota in town. "I think we'd be crazy if we didn't try to roll these guys out of the pocket a little bit," quarterbacks coach Charles London said. "We've got three really athletic guys in our room. As coaches, we have to figure out the best way to get these guys in position to be successful." Mariota rushed for 357 yards in his last season as a full-time starter, while rookie third-rounder Desmond Ridder rushed for 2,180 yards in his college career. Mariota won't have a ton of talent to work with through the air, so we expect to see him scampering around quite a bit, which gives him a little more intrigue as a backup fantasy QB.

Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota's mobility will be utilized in the offense, according to quarterbacks coach Charles London. 'I think we'd be crazy if we didn't try to roll these guys out of the pocket a little bit,' London said.

Fantasy Spin: Mariota has never run for more than 357 yards in a season, but he may be forced to make more plays with his legs for an Atlanta offense that is lacking in overall firepower. If he does start running on a routine basis, he could emerge as a serviceable QB2.

From TheHuddle

May 28 1:53pm ET

Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota says he's 'hungry to get back on the field again' after being a backup the past two seasons. 'For me personally, the last couple of years was a learning opportunity,' Mariota said on Thursday, May 26. 'Previously when I was at Tennessee I had an opportunity to play. I was a starter. Being around that and then going and learning for a couple of years, I'm kind of hungry to get back on the field again.'

Fantasy Spin: Mariota is the favorite to start in Atlanta over rookie signal-caller and 2022 third-round pick, Desmond Ridder. However, a checkered past with injuries remains a major concern for him. Assuming he enters the season as the starter, Mariota is a QB2 with upside thanks to his dual-threat ability.

From TheHuddle

May 27 9:20pm ET

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota had his last start on October 13, 2019. He was with the Titans then. But after spending a few seasons with the Raiders, the 28-year-old will get another chance to prove his worth as the expected starter for the Falcons, filling in for longtime signal-caller Matt Ryan, who is now a Colt. Despite Mariota's excitement, he made it known he's also willing to mentor rookie Desmond Ridder, who was selected in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Nonetheless, with Atlanta in the midst of a rebuild, it's no secret the team is lacking on the offensive end. As a result, Mariota may not find himself as the primary option under center if he begins to struggle, making it possible for Ridder to get some reps during the 2022-23 campaign.

From RotoBaller

May 27 4:33pm ET

The Falcons have been impressed early on with new quarterback Desmond Ridder. Dynasty Analysis: It's certainly early on in the process, but Ridder is proving to be a quick study in the classroom and showed well at rookie minicamp. While this is the time where all reports on players are glowing, it's worth noting Ridder is in position to get snaps early on if Marcus Mariota struggles or gets injured. He's an intriguing rookie pick this year and could prove to have early value.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

May 18 12:23pm ET

Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota is at the top of the quarterback depth chart ahead of the 2022 season, head coach Arthur Smith said recently. 'We've added competition certainly,' Smith said. 'Marcus being the veteran gives us a chance going forward. As with any position on this team, the best player is going to play, but obviously Marcus being the vet, that's the way it'll go starting out.'

Fantasy Spin: Mariota will battle it out for the starting job with 2022 third-round pick Desmond Ridder, but it's obvious the veteran has the advantage there. If he wins the starting job, Mariota will enter the season as a QB2 with QB1 upside thanks to his ability to make plays with his legs, but it's worth noting he has a shaky roster around him and a checkered past with injuries.

From TheHuddle

Mar 22 8:13am ET

Updating previous reports, Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota's deal is essentially a one-year deal worth $6.75 million with a $12 million option for 2023. He has a $5 million signing bonus with a $1.75 million guaranteed base salary. He has a $3 million roster bonus due the fifth day of the league year.

Mar 21 3:53pm ET

Updating a previous report, free-agent QB Marcus Mariota (Raiders) agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons on Monday, March 21. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

Fantasy Spin: Atlanta head coach Arthur Smith and Mariota briefly worked together with the Tennessee Titans in 2019 when the former was the offensive coordinator. Feleipe Franks is the only other quarterback on the Falcons' roster at the moment, so they needed to add someone just for roster depth. Mariota figures to serve as the bridge between Matt Ryan, who was traded to the Indianapolis Colts earlier Monday, and whomever the Falcons draft in April. Mariota figures to be a hard sell in fantasy outside of superflex/two-quarterback leagues.

From TheHuddle

Mar 21 3:50pm ET

The Atlanta Falcons agreed to an undisclosed two-year deal with free-agent quarterback Marcus Mariota on Monday. Atlanta moved quickly to secure their next QB after trading Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts on Monday. Mariota, who spent the last two seasons backup up Derek Carr for the Las Vegas Raiders, will reunite with head coach Arthur Smith in Atlanta. The 28-year-old figures to be a short-term stopgap under center until the Falcons find their next franchise quarterback. Mariota has completed 62.8% of his 1,795 career attempts over seven NFL seasons, and he doesn't have many weapons to work with outside of tight end Kyle Pitts and running back/wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson. He can make plays with his legs, but Mariota shouldn't be much more than a low-end QB2 as a starter once again.

From RotoBaller

Mar 21 3:30pm ET

The Atlanta Falcons are expected to pursue free-agent quarterback Marcus Mariota after trading Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts on Monday, according to sources. Head coach Arthur Smith coached Mariota when the two were with the Tennessee Titans. Mariota spent the last two seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders, backing up Derek Carr. The 28-year-old hasn't started an NFL game since his final season in Tennessee, when he threw for 1,203 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions in seven games (six starts) in 2019. With not many receiving options currently, the Falcons are in full rebuild mode, and Mariota would essentially be a placeholder until the team can land their next franchise signal-caller.

From RotoBaller

Mar 21 2:13pm ET

Free-agent QB Marcus Mariota (Raiders) is reportedly high on the Atlanta Falcons' priority list following the team's trade of Matt Ryan on Monday, March 21.

Fantasy Spin: Mariota played for Atlanta head coach Arthur Smith when the latter was the offensive coordinator for the former with the Tennessee Titans in 2019. Given the Falcons' current quarterback depth chart (Feleipe Franks), Mariota would have a very good chance to start next season while Atlanta grooms the quarterback it is now expected to draft at No. 8 overall next month.
