Atlanta Falcons rookie running back Tyler Allgeier rushed three times for 25 yards during Friday's preseason opener against the Detroit Lions. The BYU product has generated plenty of attention ahead of the fantasy football season since he has a shot at earning the starting job in Atlanta's backfield. Although he didn't run with the starters on Friday, at this point, he remains the favorite for the top job. It will be imperative that interested fantasy managers monitor his usage and performances over the next couple of weeks.

Atlanta Falcons rookie running back Tyler Allgeier was listed as the team's eighth running back on the first official depth chart of training camp, but not much should be read into it, as head coach Arthur Smith generally puts rookies on the back end of the depth chart at this stage of the preseason. Along with Allgeier, eighth overall pick Drake London was listed fifth at the wideout position behind KhaDarel Hodge, Geronimo Allison, Damiere Byrd and Auden Tate. London has been working with the first-team offense in camp, and it's fair to expect him to play a ton once the regular season begins. Allgeier has a realistic shot to become the No. 2 in his rookie season behind Cordarrelle Patterson and ahead of Damien Williams.

Dynasty | While veteran hybrid player Cordarrelle Patterson "will be" the Falcons starting running back in 2022, he may not be most-used. Dynasty Analysis: Patterson was a big producer through mid-season of 2021 but faded badly when dynasty coaches needed him most, producing only 71 rushing yards over his past four games. Clearly the team's most dynamic remaining player, the belief is that Patterson will still factor heavily as a runner but the team drafted rookie Tyler Allgeier in the fifth-round to eventually carry the load according the linked article. In any case, the versatile 31-year-old should factor heavily in the team's offensive plans and holds intriguing upside given his RB44 ranking status.

The Atlanta Falcons took running back Tyler Allgeier in the fifth round of this year's draft because they think he can eventually carry the bulk of the load in their backfield. He set a single-season record at BYU last year with 1,601 yards and was fourth in rushing attempts (276) in college football. Seventy percent of Allgeier's yards last season also came after contact. But if Cordarrelle Patterson is healthy, the Falcons are unlikely to rush him into the RB rotation in 2022. But if Patterson isn't healthy or if the team is trying to keep him on a pitch count, the 22-year-old could get a lot of early playing time in his rookie season. Patterson should open the season as Atlanta's starter and Damien Williams and Qadree Ollison are around, but Allgeier probably has the best chance of anyone on Atlanta's roster of making a run at the starting job in 2022.
