Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Quentin Johnston had a big game in Week 2, but he'll draw a much tougher challenge in a Week 3 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Johnston is currently the overall WR24 in fantasy, fueled largely by his two touchdown performance last week against the Carolina Panthers. He's been the clear WR1 on the Chargers offense and often the first read for quarterback Justin Herbert, but the underlying numbers haven't been pretty. Johnston is showing much better hands this season, but he's still just 78th in separation and 81st in route win rate, both out of just 92 qualifying receivers. He'll draw coverage from either Joey Porter Jr. or Donte Jackson this week, both of whom have been extremely stingy against opposing wide receivers.

Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Quentin Johnston, a first-rounder in 2023, had a rocky first year in the NFL marred by drops. But through the first two weeks of his second season in the NFL, Johnston has flipped the script and led the Chargers with five catches for 51 yards and two touchdowns in the Week 2 win over the Carolina Panthers. He had two TDs all of last year, but he currently leads the Bolts in catches, receiving yards and yards per target. The 23-year-old's route-running this year is tighter and more deceptive, and his hands have improved markedly. Johnston ran post or go routes 35.5% of the time last year, but that rate has dropped to 21.4% this year, which has increased his chances to run after the catch on crossing routes. He has become a popular waiver-wire pickup after the first two weeks, especially with DJ Chark (hip) on Injured Reserve.

Despite all the criticism, Johnston is just looking to build on his strong start. "Everything you're seeing from the first two games and then going through the rest of the season is just a testament to my work," Johnston said. While he's highly unlikely to continue to average one touchdown per game, it's promising that he's tied for the team lead in targets through two weeks. Los Angeles hasn't had to air it out much with two matchups against weak offenses so far, but he could see more volume when L.A. inevitably gets in "come-from-behind" mode.

He was targeted six times, making five catches for 51 yards and the two touchdowns. His first score came from 29 yards out in the first quarter and he followed it up with another touchdown in the second quarter from five yards out. The Chargers only attempted 20 passes compared to 44 rush attempts, and that looks like the pattern they'll follow most of the time going forward. Johnston could finally be working his way into fantasy relevance, but the Chargers pass catchers will be hard to project each week.

Johnston drew five targets in the season's opening game, making three catches for 38 yards. He was on the field for 67% of the team's offensive snaps. Johnston has shown that he is certainly able to get open against an NFL secondary, but actually catching the ball when it is thrown perfectly to him by an NFL quarterback has proven to be a challenge. Week 1 was a positive sign but certainly not yet enough to move him into starting lineups.

The problem for fantasy managers that drafted Johnston in dynasty/keeper leagues last year is that he's opening the 2024 season as the WR4 in LA behind Joshua Palmer, rookie second-rounder Ladd McConkey and deep threat DJ Chark (hip). The 22-year-old went undrafted in most standard-sized fantasy leagues, although he could jump into the starting lineup this Sunday against the division-rival Las Vegas Raiders and be a DFS sleeper if Chark is unable to play.
