2024 RTSports Outlook

Pierce didn't build on an impressive rookie season. He eventually lost his starting job to Devin Singletary and got sporadic work much of the season in that reserve role. Pierce had 517 total yards after having 1,104 total yards his rookie year. Pierce had double-digit carries his first season game of the season but had just one more game with that much work the rest of the year. His season high in fantasy points was 14.9, which came in Week 3. He averaged just 2.9 yards per carry. Pierce is likely to serve a reserve role this season for the Texans. He could even be the No. 3 back. Pierce is a big back but has good moves in space and can hit the hole in a hurry. Pierce is a strong runner that can make plays after contact. He also is a decent pass catcher, but doesn't excel in that area.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Pierce seemed setup for big things but took a step backwards in year two. He is young enough to get it going, but probably isn't worth a draft pick outside of deeper leagues. Last year is a concern. He might get around 400 or 500 total yards with a few scores.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Houston Texans running back Dameon Piece exceeded expectations as a fourth-round rookie in 2022, posting 1,104 yards from scrimmage and five total touchdowns on 250 touches. His sophomore campaign was a major letdown, as Devin Singletary took over the RB1 role, and Pierce tallied just 517 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for an abysmal 2.9 yards per carry. Despite this, Pierce figures to be a high-end handcuff running back behind Joe Mixon, who will be 28 years old when the 2024 season kicks off. Although Pierce's 2023 campaign suggests he's a backup-level ball-carrier, the Texans should have one of the best offenses this year, meaning extra possessions, red zone trips, and touchdown opportunities for their running backs. Houston has hinted at Pierce having a small role behind Mixon, but he's unlikely to be fantasy-relevant as long as Mixon is active. He's a pure bench stash play to begin the new campaign, making him worth a late-round flyer.

According to Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans, running back Dameon Pierce will have a role this season. While Joe Mixon is believed to be the No. 1 option on the depth chart, it appears Pierce could have a bigger function than anticipated. "I see Dameon having a very clear headspace as we are out working, and I think that will allow him to have a really productive year this year, " said Ryans during an interview with the Houston Chronicle. "He has everything it takes to be a really good running back for us, and I think him and Joe as a one-two punch would be very beneficial for us all." Of course, it remains to be seen how things will work out for the revamped Texans' offense. However, it seems Mixon and Pierce could collectively remain productive enough to exceed expectations during the 2024-25 campaign, although it will be tough to tell which player will be the most productive from week to week.

Houston Texans running back Dameon Pierce saw his numbers take a hit in his sophomore season in 2023 while being relegated to a complementary role behind Devin Singletary. Pierce rushed for 416 yards and only two touchdowns while averaging 2.9 yards per carry while also dealing with an ankle injury. He had 939 rushing yards and four TDs as a Pro Bowl alternate in his rookie season. The Texans traded for Pro Bowl RB Joe Mixon this offseason and signed him to a three-year, $27 million extension while also drafting rookie Jawhar Jordan, but they still have plans for Pierce in 2024. The 24-year-old figures to be a chance-of-pace option behind Mixon and on kickoff returns. Pierce has looked strong, compact and quick during OTAs this week. Head coach DeMeco Ryans said, "I think him and Joe as a one-two punch, would be very beneficial for us all."

Houston Texans running back Dameon Pierce had a notable rookie campaign after being selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. In just 13 games before being sidelined with injuries, he racked up 939 yards and four touchdowns on 220 carries and caught 30 passes for 165 yards and one score. However, his role, production, and efficiency declined in 2023 after the arrival of Devin Singletary, as he posted just 517 total yards and rushed for 2.9 yards per carry. Singletary is now gone, but the team traded for former Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon. Despite this, Texans general manager Nick Caserio spoke highly of Pierce in a recent media availability. "He is going to be a big part of what we're doing. Watching him move on the field, he looks pretty good. Everybody's looking forward to the opportunity in front of them; you can't worry about what's happened in the past," Caserio said. "He's got as good an attitude as anyone on the team. We're glad DP is here." While you never know whether a head coach or general manager is being honest in these situations, Caserio's comments can only help his fantasy stock. Fantasy managers should go into the season with low expectations for Pierce, but he should at least be viewed as a high-end handcuff running back in what projects to be one of the league's best offenses.

Houston Texans running back Dameon Pierce should not be started in any format in Week 16 against the Cleveland Browns. Pierce is coming off the lowest usage game of his career, playing just four snaps. Last week, the second-year back totaled just one carry for three yards. The Texans' running back has found himself falling on the depth chart with Devin Singletary and Dare Ogunbowale playing more snaps than him in both of the past two games. Pierce can not be trusted in Week 16.

Dec 18 3:00pm ET

Houston Texans running back Dameon Pierce rushed just one time for three yards and did not draw a target in the Week 15 win over the Tennessee Titans. Meanwhile, Devin Singletary handled 30 total touches and racked up 170 yards. Pierce saw just five touches the week prior against the New York Jets, so Singletary has clearly taken over the lead back role. Needless to say, Pierce can be safely benched against the Cleveland Browns in Week 16, and his outlook moving forward is concerning in redraft and dynasty leagues.

Dec 16 1:40pm ET

Houston Texans running back Dameon Pierce should not be started in most formats in Week 15 against the Tennessee Titans. Pierce is coming off the lowest usage game of his career, finishing with just five touches for seven yards. On top of that, the second-year back played just eight snaps last week. The Texans could lean on the run even more this weekend with C.J. Stroud (concussion) trending toward out. But the young running back is too hard to trust in fantasy in Week 15, especially since he saw fewer snaps than Dare Ogunbowale just one week ago.

Dec 10 10:40pm ET

Houston Texans running back Dameon Pierce continued to struggle in the team's 30-6 loss against the New York Jets in Week 14. Pierce ran just four times for nine yards in the contest as Devin Singletary took over Houston's backfield once again. Singletary totaled more carries (13) and rush yards (65) in the game. The veteran also got the team's lone goal-line carry, which resulted in a touchdown. Pierce has had a rough second season in the NFL and appears to be the Texans' backup at the moment. He'll look to get things going next week on the road against the Tennessee Titans.

Dec 9 6:10pm ET

Houston Texans running back Dameon Pierce is a flex option in Week 14 against the New York Jets. Last week, Pierce secured his first touchdown since Week 3 to go with 15 carries for 41 yards. It's been a disappointing second year for the 23-year-old. But he'll have a chance to get going this weekend against a Jets defense that is allowing the ninth-most fantasy points per game to running backs this season. With heavy rains and wind expected in this matchup, the Texans could rely on the run more than usual on Sunday.
