2019 RTSports Outlook

Darnold showed well in his rookie year, throwing for nearly 3,000 yards with 18 total touchdowns despite missing three games because of a foot injury. He played his best football late in the season, having five touchdowns without a turnover his last three games. He did have a few turnover issues throughout the season, getting picked off 15 times. He had four games with multiple interceptions. Darnold seemed to learn from his mistakes, though, and played better, mistake free football as the season progressed. Darnold didn't have the greatest weapons to work with offensively last season, so he will need some help at receiver and running back if he hopes to elevate his game this year. New head coach Adam Gase should be a big plus for Darnold. He is an offensive-minded coach with a good history of mentoring quarterbacks. Darnold has a great arm, can make plays down the field or on shorter throws, and also moves around the pocket pretty well. He will turn the ball over, though, which was an issue last season,

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Darnold was spot start material as a rookie with little help, so he has some potential to improve this year. He is a young player with a lot of promise. He isn't a plug-in starter yet but could reach that level soon. For now, consider him more of a platoon quarterback. He can throw for 3,500 yards with 25 total scores and 13 or so interceptions.

RotoBaller's Outlook

To understand the excitement building around the development of second-year quarterback Sam Darnold under the tutelage of new head coach Adam Gase, look no further than new Jets wide-receiver coach Shawn Jefferson, who recently used four curses in two sentences to describe the throwing abilities of the former USC signal-caller. The PG translation? Sam Darnold has a cannon and is really, really accurate. After taking him third overall in last years draft, the Jets, and their fans are expecting more in Darnolds sophomore campaign after last years lackluster rookie offering. His first pass of the season was a pick-six and from there the season didnt go that much better. Through the first 9 games of the season, Darnold had just 11 touchdowns, with 11 interceptions to match. Darnold then missed Weeks 10 12 with an ankle injury but came back to finish strong in the last four games of the season, throwing six touchdowns to only one interception. Additionally, he completed 64% of his passes, which was a significant improvement over the 55% rate that he had posted prior to the injury.Besides now being under the care of Gase, a supposed offensive guru, Darnold is also surrounded with better weapons. The Jets brought in Jamison Crowder and Ty Montgomery, to join a healthy Quincy Enunwa and emerging tight end Chris Herndon. Oh, and they also added all-world running back, LeVeon Bell. With new and improved weapons, in a new and improved system, Darnold is poised to make a large leap forward in his second year. With an NFBC ADP of #128 overall, as the 25th QB being taken, Darnold arguably has the upside of a QB1, but with the price-tag of Andy Dalton.

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold has impressed Jets wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson in his second season. 'It's everything,' Jefferson said of Darnold. 'The way that he works -- he's here early in the morning, he stays after, he probably doesn't leave this building until six, seven at night. He's in the old quarterback room. I've been so impressed with this kids work ethic and the way he attacks everything. It's just been awesome to see a young kid like that. It's almost like he's been here before. He's a young guy, but he has a lot of veteran attributes to him.'

Fantasy Spin: Darnold now has a year under his belt, and his supporting cast has improved, but he's still a low-end QB2 at best right now for fantasy purposes.

Jun 9 5:13pm ET

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold spoke glowingly of his team's re-signing of RB Bilal Powell this past week. 'Great to have BP back,' Darnold said. 'Can't wait to get to work with him. I haven't seen him in a while, so it's going to be nice to be able to see him. I know BP is a great guy and obviously a great player, so it's great to have him back.'

Fantasy Spin: Powell played seven games in 2018 before suffering what was initially believed to be a career-threatening neck injury. The 30-year-old rushed for 343 yards and zero touchdowns, but he caught 11 of 18 targets for 110 yards and one score. He'll enter camp battling for a depth position behind No. 1 back Le'Veon Bell.

Jun 4 7:13pm ET

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold said Tuesday, June 4, it'll take time to form chemistry with new RB Bell. 'I don't think there's necessarily a certain time period that you can put on it,' Darnold said. 'It's just kind of when we click, we click. ... I think, me and (Bell), we get along well. So, that's kind of the first step in building that relationship. It's good to kind of go on the same page with him and just see how he kind of runs routes and how he runs out there. I haven't seen him really run and it was good to kind of see him run some routes and throw the ball to him a little bit.' Darnold added that he wants to get some offensive players together for workouts ahead of training camp later this summer.

Fantasy Spin: Bell should be able to reassert himself as an RB1 after sitting out the entirety of the 2018 season. His presence, should he be able to form chemistry with the sophomore QB, could put Darnold on the fantasy radar. The signal-caller will turn 22 years old ahead of the 2019 season and enters as a low-ceiling QB2.

Apr 23 2:20pm ET

The New York Jets seem "determined" to trade down from the third overall pick in the draft later this week, according to multiple NFL sources. General manager Mike Maccagnan has made it clear that he's "open" to the idea of moving down and adding picks later in the draft. The Jets only have six picks in a very deep and rich draft. The team gave up three second-round picks when they moved up to select quarterback Sam Darnold last year. The biggest variable will be whether the Cardinals take Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray at No. 1 overall.

Apr 23 1:13pm ET

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold called new head coach Adam Gase 'awesome' and added he is looking forward to his second NFL season. 'It's going to be fun to attack this year,' Darnold said Tuesday, April 23, at the team's voluntary minicamp. '... Good things to come.'

Fantasy Spin: Darnold showed some definite flashes as a rookie, throwing for 2,865 yards, 17 TDs and 15 interceptions in 13 games while finishing 27th among fantasy QBs. A jump to QB2 range in Year 2 is certainly on the table.

Mar 26 1:00pm ET

New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan is still letting teams know that the No. 3 overall pick in the draft is for sale. The Jets traded up to the third pick last year from No. 6 to take Sam Darnold. Several teams could be interested in moving up to No. 3 this year in order to take a quarterback. Because of the draft-day trade to land Darnold, the Jets don't have a current second-round pick.

Feb 15 11:53pm ET

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold's 80.7 Total QBR over the final four weeks of the 2018 season was the best mark in the NFL.

Fantasy Spin: Darnold has his share of ups and downs as a rookie, but the strong finish could be a glimpse of what's to come. He should be viewed as a QB2 for now, but he could make the jump to QB1 sooner rather than later, especially if the Jets add some offensive weapons this offseason.

Feb 10 12:43pm ET

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold has a bright future, according to former standout CB Darrelle Revis. 'I think he (Darnold) can bring a Super Bowl in the near future for the Jets,' Revis told TMZ last week in Atlanta before Super Bowl LIII. 'It's going to take some time, but I feel like he's capable of doing it.'

Fantasy Spin: As a rookie last season, Darnold threw for 2,865 yards, 17 TDs and 13 interceptions in 13 games while compiling a 4-9 QB won-loss record. Still, playing with a depleted surrounding cast and not much help, Darnold was better than the numbers showed and will be on the QB2 radar this summer.

Feb 1 9:53pm ET

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold said he is 'excited' to work with head coach Adam Gase and believes Gase can make him a better quarterback. 'I think he's going to help me with everything, mechanics, but mainly how to play the position in the NFL,' Darnold said.

Fantasy Spin: Darnold had an inconsistent rookie year, but his potential flashed at times. Another year of experience should only help, especially if the Jets add some more weapons in the offseason. Consider him a QB2 heading into 2019.

Jan 23 8:10pm ET

The New York Jets officially hired Dowell Loggains as their next offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach on Wednesday. Loggains has worked under head coach Adam Gase in both Chicago and Miami. With Gase likely running the show on offense, Loggains' main task will be to continue the development of quarterback Sam Darnold, who was very up and down in his rookie season. The Jets ranked 29th in yards per game (299.2), 25th in passing yards (197.8), 26th in rushing yards (101.4) and 23rd in the league in points per game (20.8) in 2018.
