2020 RTSports Outlook

Rivers had his usual consistent season, having multiple touchdowns all but four games. He was 12th overall in fantasy quarterback scoring. Rivers had five 300-yard games and four three-touchdown games. HIs numbers weren't off the charts but super consistent in the Chargers good offense. Rivers had his sixth straight 4,000-yard season. He is 37 years old but remains the franchise quarterback for the Chargers high-powered offense. Rivers' arm strength seems to be down some and he struggles with the deep ball a little more than earlier in his career, but he still gets the job done. Rivers is accurate and has a quick release. He knows the offense well and does well in the pass-first system. Rivers has 10 4,000-yard seasons and six with 30-plus total touchdowns.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Rivers isn't an elite fantasy quarterback but just outside that group. He will be super consistent, though, which is a big plus for his fantasy owners. Consider him a low-end No. 1 or top No. 2 for fantasy teams. His numbers might slip a little with him a year older but don't expect much of a drop - if any. Expect a season with around 4,300-passing yards and 30 touchdowns with 13 interceptions.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Seriously. Stop drafting Philip Rivers. I don't meannever draft him. I just mean that your late round QB target in single QB leagues should neverbe Rivers. Let's review Rivers' finishes by average ppg over the past five seasons: QB13, QB13, QB19, QB14, QB13. If you want to draft Rivers as a second QB to pair with an upside unknown, I get it. I don't agree with it. But I get it. However, under no circumstances, should Rivers be your QB1 on purpose. Analysts like JJ Zachariason and Denny Carter have proven you can stream a mid to low end QB1. You can consistently and reliably stream a QB that is better than a full season of Philip Rivers. He's the same guy every season, yet every season, fantasy gamers draft him on purpose. When you see Rivers nearing the top of the available QBs, go take someone else with actual upside. Given how replaceable the QB position is in fantasy football, for your QB to matter, he has to break out like Patrick Mahomes in 2018. There is no chance Rivers is that guy. His range of outcomes is basically QB10-14. Instead of drafting Rivers, go ahead and take a QB that actually has the upside to post a top six finish at the position because in 2019, Rivers will once again be a low end QB1/high end QB2, which does nothing for your fantasy team.

Indianapolis Colts QB Philip Rivers 'might return to 2018 form' behind one of the league's top offensive lines, in the opinion of Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com.

Fantasy Spin: Rivers struggled with turnovers throughout last season, but he tossed 32 touchdowns to just 12 picks in 2018 and had thrown at least 28 touchdowns in six straight seasons. The Colts don't have a ton of weapons in the passing game, but Rivers could be a serviceable QB2 with a clean pocket to throw from.

Updating previous reports, Indianapolis Colts QB Philip Rivers' signing with the team was officially announced Saturday, March 21.

Fantasy Spin: The 38-year-old Rivers is getting a change of scenery after a down year with the Bolts (23 TDs, 20 interceptions), and will back in his familiar QB2 fantasy role for 2020.

From TheHuddle

Mar 17 4:10pm ET

The Indianapolis Colts agreed to a one-year, $25 million guaranteed deal with quarterback Philip Rivers on Tuesday. Rivers to the Colts was expected all along, and now it's official. The 38-year-old gunslinger certainly showed his age in his final season with the Chargers, throwing 23 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. He's gone over 4,000 yards passing each of the last seven seasons and is as durable as they come, even at his age. Rivers won't have the caliber of weapons that he did in LA in Indianapolis, but what he will have is one of the best offensive lines in the league. That should help him be more efficient, although his arm strength and decision-making are somewhat in question as he nears the end of his career. He'll be taken as more of a midrange fantasy backup in his new home.

Free-agent QB Philip Rivers (Chargers) has agreed to a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts, according to a source Tuesday, March 17. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Fantasy Spin: Rivers struggled in 2019 while passing for just 23 touchdowns against 20 interceptions. The 38-year-old had thrown for at least 28 TDs in each of the previous six seasons, and he hasn't missed a game since becoming a full-time starter with the then-San Diego Chargers in 2006. His top option will be WR T.Y. Hilton, but the Colts have other work to do in the passing game for Rivers to be considered anything more than a mid-tier QB2.

Updating a previous story, Indianapolis Colts QB Philip Rivers' one-year deal is for $25 million, according to a source Tuesday, March 17.

Fantasy Spin: It had been unsure whether the Colts were looking for a new starter or just a veteran to help push Jacoby Brissett. This deal makes it all but official Rivers will be under center in Week 1, while Brissett will return to a backup role for at least the 2020 season unless dealt elsewhere.

Mar 17 12:13am ET

Free-agent QB Philip Rivers (Chargers) has had discussions with the Indianapolis Colts. While nothing is done, he is the clear target for the team, NFL insider Ian Rapoport said Monday, March 16.

Fantasy Spin: Rivers would still have plenty of fantasy appeal if he were to land in Indy, especially hooking up with the dynamic T.Y. Hilton and some of the other solid receiving options for the Colts. Stay tuned.

From TheHuddle

Mar 16 2:30pm ET

The Indianapolis Colts are fully expected to pursue free-agent quarterback Philip Rivers when the NFL's legal-tampering window opens on Monday. The Colts will also look at other quarterback options, but Rivers has some familiarity with head coach Frank Reich from their days with the Chargers, and Rivers had some of his best seasons when Reich was the offensive coordinator. Indy has been one of the most popular speculated destinations for Rivers, and he'd have an excellent offensive line to work behind if he were to land there. The Colts just aren't completely sold on Jacoby Brissett as a franchise QB after a weak 2019 season. Rivers looked a bit washed up last year, so he'll likely be a QB2 target for fantasy owners this fall.

Mar 4 10:20pm ET

The Los Angeles Chargers and Carolina Panthers have tentatively agreed to a swap that would send left tackle Russell Okung to the Panthers in exchange for offensive guard Trai Turner, according to sources. The trade is expected to be processed at the start of the league year. If quarterback Cam Newton (foot) remains in the team's plans, this move should help ensure he's better protected on his blind side in 2020. Turner is in his prime and carries a $12.8 million salary cap hit this year, which rises to $15.39 million in 2021. He should be a solid building block for the Bolts offensive line, but it remains to be seen who they'll be protecting with Philip Rivers out of the picture.

Updating previous reports, free-agent QB Philip Rivers (Chargers) isn't a lock to sign with the Indianapolis Colts, according to ESPN's Matthew Berry. The move would go against what general manager Chris Ballard has previously done. A more likely scenario is the team brings in a veteran to compete with QB Jacoby Brissett, opined Berry.

Fantasy Spin: Rivers is going to be a solid QB2 in fantasy, but his highest upside probably lies with the Colts.

From TheHuddle

Feb 29 11:03am ET

The Washington Redskins could make a bid for free-agent QB Philip Rivers (Chargers), according to multiple league sources at the scouting combine, who add that it would take a massive contract to land him.

Fantasy Spin: Even though the 38-year-old Rivers will get a starting gig regardless of where he lands in free agency, he would be best suited as a QB2 in all fantasy formats next season. Given the presence of Dwayne Haskins in Washington and the amount of money that it would take to sign Rivers, it's hard to envision a scenario where he winds up in D.C.

From TheHuddle

Feb 28 1:40am ET

The Indianapolis Colts are taking a hard look at Los Angeles Chargers impending free-agent quarterback Philip Rivers this week during the scouting combine. The Colts have also denied engaging with New England Patriots impending free-agent quarterback Tom Brady's camp, according to a league source. Indy was put in a tough situation with the sudden retirement of Andrew Luck right before last season, and Jacoby Brissett didn't exactly inspire confidence as his successor in 2019. That's why the Colts are expected to be in the QB market, and head coach Frank Reich has a history with Rivers when he worked with him with the Chargers. Rivers, 38, certainly looked his age last year, but he could benefit from a strong offensive line if he signed with the Colts. Still, he'd merely be a QB2 with experience heading into 2020 for fantasy purposes.

From RotoBaller

Feb 26 11:43am ET

Free-agent QB Philip Rivers (Chargers) is likely to sign with the Indianapolis Colts, in the opinions of some at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Fantasy Spin: Rivers had a down year, but he was still 13th in fantasy points at the position - ahead of Tom Brady, Baker Mayfield and Derek Carr, and just below Aaron Rodgers. He could have one of those refresher years on a new, talented team. He'd be a solid QB2 pickup in drafts.

From TheHuddle

Feb 13 3:50pm ET

The Los Angeles Chargers agreed to a one-year contract extension with head coach Anthony Lynn that puts him with the team through the 2021 season. The Chargers are entering a transition now that they have officially moved on from veteran quarterback Philip Rivers, and they're expected to let running back Melvin Gordon walk in free agency as well. Tyrod Taylor could be under center for the Bolts, at least to start the 2020 season, but the Chargers could also upgrade the position through free agency, the draft or a trade. Lynn, 51, led the Chargers to a disappointing 5-11 last-place finish in the AFC West. He's 26-22 in his three years with LA.

From RotoBaller

Feb 10 8:13pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers told Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times on Monday, Feb. 10, that he can say for certain that if he is still playing, 'it's a two-year maximum.' Rivers and the Chargers mutually agreed earlier Monday to let the quarterback hit free agency after 16 seasons.

From TheHuddle

Feb 10 6:53pm ET

Impending free-agent QB Philip Rivers is of legitimate interest to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to multiple league sources via ESPN's Jenna Laine.

From TheHuddle

Feb 10 4:20pm ET

The Los Angeles Chargers announced that longtime quarterback Philip Rivers will enter free agency. This rumor had been floating around for a while, but now it is official. Rivers started every Chargers game since 2006, and the 38-year-old has reportedly already received interest from Tampa Bay and Indianapolis. For now, the Chargers have Tyrod Taylor atop the depth chart, but they're almost certain to draft a quarterback. Rivers' fantasy value is wholly dependent on where he lands. A starting role in Tampa Bay would likely boost his short-term value a bit.

From RotoBaller

Feb 10 2:33pm ET

Impending free-agent QB Philip Rivers and the Los Angeles Chargers mutually agreed that Rivers will be allowed to reach free agency and not return to the Chargers in 2020.

Fantasy Spin: This pretty much confirms what had been speculated since it was reported Rivers had moved from his long-time California home to Florida. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts figure to at least check in with the 38-year-old when the new league year opens, and both spots could enable him to remain a strong fantasy QB2 option with occasional QB1 upside.

From TheHuddle

Feb 2 5:03pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers impending free-agent QB Philip Rivers may receive interest from the Indianapolis Colts if he is available in the free-agent market, in the opinion of NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Fantasy Spin: The Colts have Jacoby Brissett as their starting quarterback, but he is coming off a disappointing season. Rivers should he able to find a starting job this offseason and would have some solid pass catchers to work with if he joins the Colts. Rivers is probably a No. 2 fantasy quarterback at this point but could be a starting option against favorable matchups.

From TheHuddle

Jan 28 10:33pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers is unlikely to return to the team in 2020, in the opinion of FOX Sports' Jay Glazer. However, Glazer clarified comments he made a day earlier about Rivers' future on Tuesday, Jan. 28, stating he did not report that such a decision has already been made.

From TheHuddle

Jan 28 4:40pm ET

Updating a previous story from Monday, the Los Angeles Chargers haven't officially moved on from quarterback Philip Rivers, as FOX Sports' Jay Glazer alluded to. All options remain available with the veteran gunslinger, including the franchise tag. However, the fact that Rivers moved his family 2,000 miles away from Los Angeles to Florida could factor into the decision on both sides. The writing seems to be on the wall for the Bolts to cut ties with Rivers when he becomes a free agent this March. The 38-year-old had one of the worst seasons of his career in 2019 in his 16th and likely final season with the Chargers. Rivers can still put up numbers as he gets closer to retirement, but fantasy owners will likely be drafting him as a backup for the 2020 season, no matter where he winds up.
