2024 RTSports Outlook

Montgomery was just 24th overall in fantasy running back scoring last year. The emergence of Justin Fields as a runner really impacted Montgomery. He had a career low 201 carries. He had just one 100-yard rushing performance, which came in Week 2. Montgomery had double-digit fantasy points eight of 16 games. Montgomery was eighth in broken tackles (20) and averaged 2.0 yards after contact, which was the 12th best in all of football. So it wasn't all bad for Montgomery. He will look to get things going this year in Detroit, trying to serve the Jamaal Williams role in the offense this season. He does have rookie Jahmyr Gibbs to compete with for touches, which is a concern. Montgomery is a good between the tackles runner. He is a big back that runs with power and does well after contact. He also is a solid receiver that makes him a legit three-down back. He lacks a little elusiveness, though, but will make some plays in space.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Montgomery is not the most exciting back but should be a solid No. 3 for fantasy teams. And a change of scenery should do him some good this year, possibly getting a lot of goal-line chances in this offense. Look for around 1,000 total yards, 20 receptions and nine or so touchdowns.

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery rushed 15 times for 93 yards and a touchdown and caught both of his targets for 20 yards in the NFC Championship Game loss to the San Francisco 49ers. It was his best postseason game, but ultimately, the Lions blew a 17-point lead after failing to keep the offense rolling in the second half. The 26-year-old should remain on the fantasy radar next year, but his role could be reduced as rookie Jahmyr Gibbs steps into a larger role. Where Montgomery should be drafted next year will likely be a hot topic of discussion this offseason.

Detroit Lions RB David Montgomery rushed 15 times for 93 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 20 yards in a 34-31 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game.

From TheHuddle

Jan 25 1:50pm ET

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery hasn't been a great producer in the playoffs against two strong defensive fronts, posting 90 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries against the Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. On Sunday in the NFC Championship Game, he'll face another tough matchup. The San Francisco 49ers surrendered the fourth-fewest fantasy points per game to running backs during the regular season. DFS gamers should not expect Montgomery to have a big rushing day, so his outlook will be dependent on him finding the end zone. That said, his $5,600 price tag for DraftKings tournaments is reasonable, so he remains on the fantasy radar.

Detroit Lions RB David Montgomery registered 33 rushing yards on 10 attempts in the NFC Divisional Round playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while he added three receptions for 14 yards on four targets.

Jan 21 6:40pm ET

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery rushed ten times for 33 yards and caught three passes for 14 yards in the 31-23 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His final stats in the NFC Divisional Round were far from impressive, but he remains a key piece of the team's offense despite the emergence of rookie Jahmyr Gibbs. The 49ers allowed the fourth-fewest fantasy points per game to running backs during the regular season, so Montgomery could be in for another hard-fought day in the NFC Championship Game. That said, he scored 14 touchdowns in the regular season and Wild Card Rounds combined, so he remains a DFS consideration.

Jan 18 2:00pm ET

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery rushed for over 1,000 yards and scored 13 touchdowns in the regular season, and he found the end zone in the Wild Card win over the Los Angeles Rams. However, a worrisome matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense awaits in the NFC Divisional Round. In Week 6, Tampa Bay limited the Lions to just 40 rushing yards on 22 attempts. Although Montgomery suffered an injury and left that game early, he mustered only 14 yards on six rushes before exiting. The Buccaneers allowed the third-fewest fantasy points per game to running backs all season, meaning Montgomery will likely need multiple trips to the end zone to pay off in GPP DFS tournaments. He will likely have opportunities to score, but his overall ceiling is likely to take a hit in this matchup against a strong front seven.

Jan 15 9:20am ET

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery rushed 14 times for 57 yards and caught his lone target for 11 yards in the 24-23 win over the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Wild Card contest. The 26-year-old found the end zone in 11 of his 14 games during the regular season, and his good fortune continued in the postseason. The Lions are onto the Divisional Round for the first time in over 30 years and will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or Philadelphia Eagles in Detroit next week. Both teams were strong against fantasy running backs in the regular season, but the Lions running backs have been matchup-proof so far this year.

From TheHuddle

Jan 11 3:20pm ET

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery enjoyed the best season of his career in his first year with the organization, rushing for 1,015 yards and 13 touchdowns. He began the season as the clear lead back, but rookie Jahmyr Gibbs steadily ate into his workload as the season progressed. Still, he remained a fringe RB1 due to his goal-line role in one of the best offenses in the NFL. However, his Wild Card opponent, the Los Angeles Rams, has allowed the second-fewest fantasy points per game to running backs. While Gibbs is more matchup-proof as a pass-catching weapon, Montgomery could be at risk of busting in this spot. He'll need a touchdown to be worth using $6,200 of your budget on him in six-game contests on DraftKings.

Detroit Lions RB David Montgomery registered a team-best 40 rushing yards on 10 attempts with a touchdown in Week 18 against the Minnesota Vikings, and he was not targeted in the pass game.

From TheHuddle

Jan 7 5:00pm ET

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery rushed 10 times for 40 yards and a touchdown in the Week 18 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Montgomery's one-yard touchdown plunge marked his 13th of the season to go along with 1,015 yards rushing. It's been a career year for the 26-year-old, who is under contract in Detroit until at least 2025. Although rookie Jahmyr Gibbs is clearly the RB1 of the future, the two ball-carriers with contrasting styles will likely continue to share touches in 2024.

From RotoBaller

Jan 4 1:20pm ET

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery found the end zone for the 12th time last week, continuing his run of solid RB2 play in fantasy football. The former Chicago Bear has not finished lower than the RB25 in any non-injury-shortened game this year, so he remains a high-floor RB2 or flex play in Week 18 against the Minnesota Vikings. The Lions still have a path to the No. 2 seed in the NFC, meaning head coach Dan Campbell should still be motivated to play his starters until the end of the game. Although the Vikings have surrendered the ninth-fewest fantasy points per game to running backs, the Lions have been able to run the ball in all matchups this year.

Dec 31 1:10am ET

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery had 14 carries for 65 yards in Saturday's narrow loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Jahmyr Gibbs had one more attempt to finish with 43 yards on the night. However, the 26-year-old was more productive, scoring a touchdown for the second straight game to bring his total to 12 on the year. Montgomery has easily had the best season of his career in his first year in Detroit. While Gibbs will continue to remain involved, Montgomery should stay a featured component of all fantasy lineups in the Week 18 rematch with the Vikings.

Detroit Lions RB David Montgomery rushed 14 times for 65 yards and a touchdown in a 20-19 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17.

From TheHuddle

Dec 28 2:20pm ET

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery has seen his fantasy ceiling take a hit with the emergence of rookie Jahmyr Gibbs, but he still has plenty of value at the tricky RB spot. Gibbs has been electric over the last three weeks, but Montgomery has still handled 51 touches for 236 yards and a touchdown during that stretch. Ultimately, Montgomery has become more touchdown-dependent than ever, but he does just enough in the receiving game to have a solid floor in PPR formats. Unless a fantasy manager is loaded at running back, he's still worth starting as a low-end RB2 in the Week 17 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.

From RotoBaller

Dec 26 11:23pm ET

Detroit Lions RBs Jahmyr Gibbs (2.2) and David Montgomery (2.0) rank first and tied for second, respectively, in the league among qualified rushers in average yards after contact, according to Pro Football Reference.

Fantasy Spin: While the Lions' offensive line deserves a well-earned nod here for the holes they create for both backs, plenty of credit also goes to the backs for putting themselves in a position where defenders cannot square them up. Gibbs' weekly ceiling will probably be lower than fantasy managers would prefer due to the presence of Montgomery and vice versa, but the two backs complement each other nicely and should help one another stay relatively fresh all season long moving forward.

From TheHuddle

Dec 25 1:50am ET

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery scored a touchdown on 17 carries with 55 rushing yards and 14 yards over two catches in Week 16's 30-24 win over the Minnesota Vikings. Detroit inked Montgomery to a deal this past spring to assume last year's Jamaal Williams role, and though the 26-year-old power back may not be leading the NFL in rushing scores as his predecessor did in 2022, Montgomery is now up to 11 TDs in 2023. Montgomery crashed into the end zone from one yard out in the first quarter but watched as two of the Lions' later scores inside the five-yard line went to Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jahmyr Gibbs. Montgomery is technically touchdown-dependent, but Detroit's high-powered offense has allowed him to score in nine of his 11 full games played this year. D-Mont should be as good a bet as any back to hit paydirt for a potential track meet with the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17.

Dec 24 5:13pm ET

Detroit Lions RB David Montgomery rushed for 55 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 16. He also caught two passes for 14 yards during the game.

From TheHuddle

Dec 21 3:10pm ET

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery saw his four-game touchdown streak snapped in Week 14, and he wasn't able to find the end zone in Week 15 either. Since Jahmyr Gibbs has been the more efficient runner and handled more of the receiving work out of the backfield, Montgomery needs a touchdown or two to unlock his upside. Ultimately, both running backs are still must-starts in most leagues, but the former Chicago Bear has a lower floor than he did earlier in the season. Despite the tough matchup with Minnesota, Montgomery offers plenty of upside in one of the best offenses in the NFL. If he can capitalize on his red zone and goal line touches, he's capable of an RB1 performance in all matchups.

From RotoBaller

Dec 17 9:20am ET

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery rushed 17 times for 85 yards during Saturday's win over the Denver Broncos. He played a minor role in the passing game, too, hauling in two of three targets for a loss of three yards through the air. While the 26-year-old led the team in touches and delivered an impressive 5.0 YPC, he was still out-produced by rookie Jahmyr Gibbs, who totaled 100 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the effort. In fact, it does appear that Gibbs has been the preferred option around the goal line lately. Nevertheless, both backs have shown that they can co-exist, and they should both be started in fantasy football when the Lions face the Minnesota Vikings in Week 16.
