2024 RTSports Outlook

Ertz was limited to 10 games last year because of a knee injury, but still managed to finish 19th overall in fantasy tight end scoring. He produced well when on the field, having double-digit fantasy points all but two games. He had six games with five or more fantasy points. Ertz suffered a torn ACL in Week 10 but hopes to be ready for the start of this season. And as long as he his healthy, Ertz should be the No. 1 tight end for the Cardinals. And he could rack up the targets as long as he is healthy and playing. Ertz is 32 years old and coming off a major knee injury, though, so nothing is certain at this stage of his career. Ertz has at least 70 receptions and 750 yards six of eight seasons. Ertz isn't really a speed demon at tight end but runs very good routes and has solid hands. He also blocks pretty well but isn't an elite blocker by any means. He does lack a little speed to create big plays down the field but makes up for that with his hands and route running.

FANTASY OUTLOOK:  Ertz is capable of being a top-five fantasy tight end. He has done it in the past and produced in this offense last year when playing. But his age and injury concerns make him a bit of a risk. Take him as a No. 2 and hope he rebounds. And remember, he is no sure thing to be ready for Week 1. Look for around 50 receptions for 500 yards and five or so scores.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Drafting a 32-year-old tight end coming off a torn ACL and MCL will never feel good. However, remember Arizona Cardinals tight end Zach Ertz (knee) was the TE4 through the first eight weeks of 2022. Over that span, the former Philadelphia Eagle averaged just over five receptions, 44 yards, and 0.45 touchdowns per game. Overall, Ertz finished with 47 catches for 406 yards and four touchdowns over 10 games. He is not a lock to play in Week 1 against the Commanders as he continues to recover from his MCL and ACL surgery. The veteran was activated from the PUP list but didn't suit up for any preseason games. There is a lot of uncertainty around Ertz, but it is encouraging that he was a large part of this offense to start 2022. His only competition at the position is 2022 second-round pick Trey McBride, a promising prospect still developing. Additionally, this team has a new Head Coach and a new system, leaving this entire offense yet to be determined. Even though he is eyeing a Week 1 return, Ertz is not someone you want to rely on in fantasy. However, he may provide stability in the position for those who wait until the end of the draft for their tight end.

Dynasty | The Commanders have signed tight end Zach Ertz to a one-year contract. Dynasty Analysis: The Commanders let Logan Thomas walk in free agency so they were in need of a serviceable tight end. They should get that in Ertz, though he's far from the dominant player we once saw in Philadelphia and Arizona. While he should be a starter in the offense, it's hard to see him having a ton of success with a rookie quarterback. Still, he's reunited with new OC Kliff Kingsbury, so he could have some late career magic left him. Regardless, his age and declining skill set make him a poor choice for the back-end of a roster in a shallow dynasty league.

Three-time Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz is signing with the Washington Commanders on a one-year deal worth up to $5 million on Wednesday, according to a source. It will be a reunion for Ertz and new Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. When Ertz was with the Arizona Cardinals in Kingsbury's offense, he saw a ton of targets, so this has the 33-year-old's fantasy stock on the rise again after he played in only seven games in the desert in 2023 due to injuries, catching 27 of his 43 targets for 187 yards and one touchdown. Logan Thomas is now out of the picture in Washington, paving the way for Ertz to serve as the team's top pass-catching tight end if he's healthy, but he could also be taking passes from whichever quarterback the Commanders with the second overall pick in the upcoming draft.

Free-agent TE Zach Ertz (Lions) is signing a one-year, $5 million deal with the Washington Commanders, per source on Wednesday, March 6.

Fantasy Spin: Ertz appeared in seven games for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 but didn't produce much, tallying 27 catches for 187 yards and one touchdown. He ended up signing to the Lions' practice squad but didn't see any action. In fairness to Ertz, Arizona's quarterback situation was a mess with Kyler Murray on the shelf for much of the season. However, with Ertz turning 34 in November, it remains to be seen how much he has left in the tank, and he might be catching passes from a rookie signal-caller. We'll have to see it to believe it before considering Ertz a viable fantasy option in 2024.

Detroit Lions tight end Zach Ertz has reportedly looked impressive in practice and is picking up everything extremely fast. Despite that, the Lions have decided to not elevate Ertz ahead of Sunday's NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers. Possibly, Ertz suits up if the Lions can make it to the Super Bowl. His presence alone is impactful to this roster as a former Super Bowl champion. That being said, Sam LaPorta figures to see a majority of the snaps at tight end this weekend.

Detroit Lions TE Zach Ertz won't be elevated from the practice squad for this week's playoff game, per source on Saturday, Jan. 27.

From TheHuddle

Jan 27 1:10pm ET

The Detroit Lions signed veteran tight end Zach Ertz to their practice squad earlier this week, and quarterback Jared Goff doesn't see why Ertz can't play in Sunday's NFC Championship against the San Francisco 49ers. "He's picked it up extremely fast," Goff said. "He really has. Really impressive, not that you didn't expect that from a guy like him who's been around for so long. I've known him here and there throughout the years, and just hearing about how smart he is and how well he can pick up things, he's done it really well this week. It's been good." The 33-year-old has a Super Bowl ring with the Philadelphia Eagles, and Goff thinks Ertz's presence at practices has already helped the Lions as they try to make their first-ever Super Bowl appearance. With impressive rookie Sam LaPorta being Goff's go-to tight end target, Ertz probably won't see many snaps if he's active on Sunday.

Detroit Lions TE Zach Ertz is in shape and will practice with the team but his status for the NFC Championship Game remains up in the air, head coach Dan Cambell said on Wednesday, Jan. 24. 'We're going to gauge this and see where he's at,' Campbell said.

Fantasy Spin: While Ertz is a fantastic late-season addition for the Lions, he'll be stuck behind Sam LaPorta and there's no telling what he'll be able to contribute after not playing at all this season. He shouldn't be in lineups in any format.

Jan 24 12:50pm ET

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell said that veteran tight end Zach Ertz is in the team's building on Wednesday, but the team is unsure if this is the week to use him. "Right now he just got here, I know he's in shape. I talked to him the other day. He understands we're gonna gauge this and see where we're at," Campbell said. Detroit signed the 33-year-old veteran to their practice squad on Monday to give them more tight end depth for the NFC Championship game this Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers after Brock Wright fractured his forearm in the Divisional Round win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Before being waived by the Arizona Cardinals in November, Ertz caught 27 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown in seven games. Even if he were active this weekend, Ertz wouldn't be a realistic target for those playing DFS.

Dynasty | The Lions have signed tight end Zach Ertz. Dynasty Analysis: Ertz will fill a need at backup tight end for this weekend's game, though his long-term future is likely not in Detroit. It's a fun story to watch because Ertz was long one of fantasy football's best weapons at the position. However, with Trey McBride making him expendable in Arizona and Father Time nipping at his heels, it's more than likely his time on dynasty rosters has come to an end.

Three-time Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz is signing with the Detroit Lions on Monday, according to sources. Ertz will start out on the team's practice squad, with plans for the team to elevate him to the 53-man active roster for the NFC Championship game on Sunday night against the San Francisco 49ers. The 33-year-old veteran was cut by the Arizona Cardinals in November and went unclaimed on waivers. Ertz will join the Lions after Brock Wright suffered a fractured forearm during the Divisional Round win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Rookie Sam LaPorta, who led all tight ends in fantasy points during the regular season, will continue to be one of quarterback Jared Goff's favorite targets in the NFC Championship, but Ertz will give the Lions some experience as a backup to LaPorta.

Dec 10 11:10am ET

Three-time Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz has had serious conversations with six teams in the playoff hunt, but he is remaining patient to find the right fit, according to sources. Ertz has over 700 career catches and a game-winning Super Bowl touchdown in his career. He went unclaimed after he was waived by the Arizona Cardinals a few weeks ago and is trying to find the right fit with a contender. The 33-year-old was on Injured Reserve with a quadriceps injury and hasn't played since Week 7, so it remains to be seen how effective he'll even be when he does decide on a new team. Ertz's fantasy value will also depend on his new situation and whether he'll actually be the top pass-catching target or more of a veteran depth option.

Dec 4 7:30pm ET

When asked about whether the team would consider adding free-agent tight end Zach Ertz, Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said, "We like our tight ends. I think right now we'll roll with those guys." Mark Andrews (ankle) is expected to miss the rest of the season, but the Ravens are comfortable using second-year tight end Isaiah Likely and Charlie Kolar to replace him the rest of the season. Ertz was released by the Arizona Cardinals last week and is free to sign with any team. The veteran tight end wants to go somewhere he can win another Super Bowl ring, with the Bills, Chiefs and Eagles seemingly his best options. Philly makes the most sense given Dallas Goedert's (forearm) injury and the fact that Ertz began his career with the Eagles.

Dec 2 12:20pm ET

The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to have interest in free-agent tight end Zach Ertz. The Arizona Cardinals cut him after he requested his release this week, and he officially cleared waivers on Friday, so he can now sign with any team on the open market. The 33-year-old veteran hasn't played since Week 7 due to a quadriceps injury but he should be able to play down the stretch and wants a shot at another Super Bowl ring. It would be a reunion for both sides, as Ertz played the first nine seasons of his career in Philadelphia. Starting tight end Dallas Goedert is getting close to returning from a fractured forearm he suffered in Week 9, so the Eagles wouldn't be the best landing spot for Ertz in terms of fantasy potential to end the 2023 season.

Free-agent TE Zach Ertz (Cardinals) could receive interest from the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

From TheHuddle

Dec 1 4:20pm ET

Former Arizona Cardinals tight end Zach Ertz (quadricep) cleared waivers on Friday afternoon. He is officially a free agent and can sign with any team. The 33-year-old showed flashes of high-level play earlier this season, catching 27 passes for 187 yards and one touchdown. Ertz's intention is to join a contender, and teams like the Eagles, Ravens, or Chiefs represent potential landing spots. Of the three, Baltimore gives Ertz the only opportunity to be a starter again, though it seems like he's chasing a ring more than a starting role. Fantasy managers should keep an eye on his free agency but can leave him on waivers for now.
