2024 RTSports Outlook

Taylor was the No. 1 fantasy pick in many drafts last year, but didn't quite live up to the hype. Injury issues really hampered his season. He played just 11 games, eventually seeing his season end after Week 15. He had to have cleanup surgery on his ankle after the season. The good news is he should be good to go for the start of this year. Taylor had two 100-yard rushing games last year and had just more than 1,000 total yards on the season. He still produced when on the field. A new coaching staff and quarterback should be a positive for Taylor and the entire Colts offense. Taylor can get it going again this year. Taylor has 1,000-yard seasons with double-digit touchdowns two of his first three years in the game. Taylor is a complete back that can play three downs. He is a top athlete that can carry the load. He catches the ball well and can make plays between the tackles. Taylor also has very good speed and the ability to make plenty of plays on the outside.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Taylor was our top rated fantasy player last year but doesn't get that honor this season. He is still a top-10 player. The talent is there and the offense should be better. He can rebound in a big way. Taylor can get around 1,900 total yards, 15 total touchdowns and 45 receptions.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor's (ankle) 2023 fantasy draft cost has bounced around quite a bit this summer after a disappointing 2022. The 24-year-old is far from the consensus No. 1 overall pick he was last year, and his early-round treatment continues to be threatened as his status becomes murkier. Taylor's offseason took a dramatic twist when the runner was first placed on the PUP list on July 25, perhaps still working his way back from January right ankle surgery. The star ball carrier then requested a trade on July 29 amid contractual disputes, rendering his 23 outlook a suddenly-cloudy one. Finally, the Colts announced on Aug. 29 that Taylor would start the season on the PUP list after they couldn't find a trade suitor, meaning he will miss the first four games of the year. Taylor is already on the heels of an uneven year in an uninspiring Colts offense with multiple ankle sprains further hampering the runner, costing him six games. The former All-Pro was only fantasy's RB17 in average full-PPR fantasy points per game (13.3) last season. Taylor logged just 4.6 yards per touch and 0.68 fantasy points per opportunity. It wasn't long ago, though, when the 2021 Bert Bell Award winner led the league in rushing yards per game (106.5), yards from scrimmage (2171), and all-purpose touchdowns (20) that campaign. Following the trade of satellite-back Nyheim Hines, Taylor handled 87% of Indianapolis' offensive snaps in four full contests from Weeks 10 to 13 in '22. When Taylor is healthy, he certainly represents a high-end RB1 regardless of format. However, the former Pro Bowler signifies arguably fantasy's most dangerous proposition with a very wide range of potential outcomes. Taylor remains as good a bet as any ball carrier to lead the league in rushing yards per game in '23, but there's simply no guarantee he will return promptly after Week 4. He should be drafted as a fifth- or sixth-round pick with such a lack of clarity at this point.

Indianapolis' RB Jonathan Taylor scored 27.60 fantasy points in Saturday's Week 18 loss against the Texans. Taylor ran for 188 yards and caught two passes for 8 yards with one touchdown.

Jan 7 1:40am ET

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor was the lone bright spot in the Colts' 23-19 loss to the Houston Texans on Saturday night. Taylor ran the ball 30 times for a whopping 188 yards on the ground and a touchdown. He reeled in both of his targets for an additional eight yards through the air. Taylor (heel) left the game in the second half briefly with an injury but did return just a few drives later. The 24-year-old closes out the regular season with 894 yards from scrimmage and eight total touchdowns in ten games played. Indy is now eliminated from playoff contention with their Week 18 loss.

Colts' RB Jonathan Taylor ran for 188 yards on 30 carries with one touchdown in Saturday's loss against the Texans.

Jan 5 9:00pm ET

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor has slowly returned to his normal form, running the ball 21 times for 96 yards and a touchdown in the team's Week 17 win against the Las Vegas Raiders. Taylor has now scored at least one touchdown in his last four matchups and looks to continue the streak in a win-and-in season finale against the Houston Texans. Houston has done a decent job defending the run this season, allowing the third least rushing yards per game and the 15th least fantasy points to opposing running backs. Fellow running back Zack Moss (forearm) is questionable ahead of this matchup, but it will be Taylor in all likelihood getting the vast majority of opportunities regardless of Moss' status. Fantasy managers can expect Indy to play through Taylor in their most important game of the season, and can look to start him as a high-end RB2 accordingly.

Jan 1 12:10am ET

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor ran the ball 21 times for 96 yards and a touchdown in the team's 23-20 win against the Las Vegas Raiders. He also reeled in his only target of the day for another eight yards through the air. Taylor once again saw a huge workload in running back Zack Moss (forearm), receiving over 80% of the team's running back opportunities. With his touchdown today, he now extends his touchdown streak to four games. He'll look to continue his momentum in Week 18 when Indy hosts the Houston Texans, and fantasy managers in all formats can look to include him in lineups for that contest.

Dec 29 8:30pm ET

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor ran the ball 18 times for 43 yards and a touchdown in the team's Week 16 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. He now gears up for a Week 17 matchup against the Raiders, one in which fellow running back Zack Moss (forearm) has been ruled out from. Taylor is set for another large workload, against a defense that's allowed the tenth most points to opposing fantasy running backs this season. That being said, their more recent form has been much better as Las Vegas has allowed just the third least amount of points to opposing fantasy running backs over the last four weeks. With all that in mind, Taylor's potential volume in Moss' absence puts him in contention for a solid RB2 play in Week 17.

Dynasty | Colts running back Jonathan Taylor had 43 rushing yards and a touchdown in the Colts loss to Atlanta. Dynasty Analysis: Taylor was poised to have a big game and scored on the opening possession. However, things went South in a hurry for Indianapolis and a negative game script kept him from logging more work. On the plus side, Taylor was able to make it through the game unscathed and should be in line for some solid efforts over the next two weeks.Taylor has shown enough this season to be back in the fold as a top five running back going into next year's drafts.

Dec 24 10:20pm ET

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor carried the ball 18 times for 43 yards and a touchdown in a 29-10 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Taylor was not involved in the passing game, seeing just one target which he did not catch. Coming back from his thumb injury, the fifth-year back went right back into his full workload receiving over 85% of the running back opportunities. Taylor will look to keep the momentum going in Week 17 when the Colts face off against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Dec 22 4:20pm ET

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor (thumb) has been removed from the injury report and will play against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 16. He was a full participant in practice all week long and should be 100 percent on Sunday. The star playmaker ranks as a low-end RB1 in fantasy football, especially against an Atlanta defense surrendering 115.3 scrimmage yards per game to opposing backfields.

From RotoBaller

Dec 22 1:20pm ET

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor (thumb) is expected to play on Sunday versus the Atlanta Falcons. Head coach Shane Steichen said the 24-year-old "looks good" and expressed optimism about his availability for Week 16. If confirmed as active, Taylor will return to the low-end RB1 tier after missing three weeks. During the five games prior to his absence, Taylor was averaging 75.4 rushing yards, 15 receiving yards, and 0.8 touchdowns. Managers should have full confidence in Indianapolis' lead back as the fantasy football playoffs continue.

Dec 21 12:10pm ET

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor (thumb) said he will practice again on Thursday and that will determine a lot toward his status for Week 16 against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Taylor said he'll wear some sort of brace/wrap. He had his surgically repaired right thumb wrapped up in a T-shirt when he spoke to reporters. The Colts listed the 24-year-old as a full practice participant on their estimated report on Wednesday, signaling he has a pretty good chance to return from a three-game absence following thumb surgery. Zack Moss (shoulder) is also questionable after getting hurt in Week 15, so Taylor could have a pretty big role this Sunday against Atlanta if he gets through the next two days of practice unscathed.

From RotoBaller

Dec 20 4:40pm ET

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor (thumb) was listed as a full participant on Wednesday's estimated practice report. It was reported earlier that Taylor would take part in the team's walkthrough session, but a listed as a full participant is a pleasant surprise for fantasy managers still playing for a title in 2023. It sounds as though Taylor is tracking towards a return this weekend to face the Atlanta Falcons following a three-game absence due to right-thumb surgery. It's also notable that Zack Moss (shoulder) did not practice on Wednesday after getting hurt in Saturday's win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. It's unclear if Taylor would have a cap put on his snaps if he plays in Week 16, but at the very least it looks like he'll be back to face the Falcons on the road.

From RotoBaller

Dec 20 12:40pm ET

Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen told reporters on Wednesday that running back Jonathan Taylor (thumb) is progressing well and will take part in the team's walkthrough practice like he's done the last few weeks. There remains optimism that Taylor will return to action in Week 16 against the Atlanta Falcons, but he'll be evaluated on a daily basis. The 24-year-old had surgery on his thumb and has been absent the last three games. It would be good timing for the Colts backfield for Taylor to be able to return this weekend, as Zack Moss (shoulder) is dealing with an injury that could put him in jeopardy of playing against Atlanta. The Colts backfield is in flux at the moment, although it seems likely that one of Taylor or Moss will be active. If not, Indy would be down to Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson.

Dec 17 1:20pm ET

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor (thumb) is "feeling good," according to head coach Shane Steichen. The Colts' HC told reporters that "we'll see how this week goes" in terms of the former All-Pro running back returning to practice. Taylor underwent thumb surgery back on November 29 and has now missed three straight games. It's encouraging to hear that he has a chance to practice this week. Indianapolis currently occupies the final Wild Card spot in the AFC with an 8-6 record and would love to get Taylor back in the mix for their Christmas Eve tilt against the Atlanta Falcons. Fantasy managers will want to monitor his status closely this upcoming week.

From RotoBaller

Dec 16 2:50pm ET

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor (thumb) has a "realistic chance" to return in Week 16 versus the Atlanta Falcons, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The star playmaker hasn't appeared in a game since Week 12 when he broke free for 91 yards and two touchdowns. As soon as he's able to return, he should handle the vast majority of snaps out of the backfield, ranking as a fantasy RB1. While his absence has tested managers' depth, his eventual return will provide those same managers with a huge boost for the peak of the fantasy playoffs. In the meantime, Zack Moss will start at running back against the Steelers this Saturday.

From RotoBaller

Dec 14 1:00pm ET

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor (thumb) missed practice again on Thursday and will miss his third straight game in Week 15 on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It's not a big surprise after Taylor was expected to miss three to five weeks after having surgery on his thumb. The Colts are expecting the 24-year-old to be back this year, though, so fantasy managers with something left to play for should keep him stashed with hopes that he can return in Week 16 to face the Atlanta Falcons. Zach Moss has disappointed the last two weeks in the lead-back role for the Colts with Taylor sidelined, but he will have RB1 upside because of the volume alone for the third straight week in fantasy.

From RotoBaller

Dec 13 3:20pm ET

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor (thumb) is missing from practice on Wednesday for the second straight day this week. Taylor was listed as a non-participant during Tuesday's session as well and it's a near certainty that he'll miss his third straight game following thumb surgery. The Colts are expecting Taylor to return this year, though, so fantasy managers still playing for something should keep him stashed just in case he's able to return next week. With the 24-year-old most likely sitting out this Saturday versus the Pittsburgh Steelers, Zack Moss is in line to serve as Indy's lead back for the third straight week. Moss has been underwhelming the last two games with Taylor out, but the volume increase gives him a solid floor as an RB2 in fantasy against Pittsburgh.

From RotoBaller

Dec 12 7:40pm ET

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor (thumb) was listed as a non-participant on Tuesday's estimated practice report. The Colts haven't officially ruled Taylor out for the Week 15 game on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, although the 24-year-old is likely to miss his third straight game following surgery on his thumb on Nov. 29. Fantasy managers need to keep Taylor stashed on their rosters, but they shouldn't expect him back this weekend, and Tuesday's DNP tag supports that notion. Zack Moss is in line to retain lead-back duties for the Colts offense in Week 15, giving him RB2 upside in fantasy. Moss has stepped up for the Colts in 2023, but he hasn't scored since Week 8 and has 2.47 yards per carry on his 32 rushing attempts the last two games with Taylor sidelined.

From RotoBaller

Dec 12 12:10pm ET

Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen confirmed to reporters that the plan is for running back Jonathan Taylor (thumb) to play again this year. Taylor has missed the last two weeks with a right-thumb injury that required surgery, and his status remains to be determined for Saturday's clash against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 15. The 24-year-old was expected to be out anywhere from three to five weeks, so a return this weekend might be a bit optimistic, but we'll have to see what he does in practices starting on Wednesday. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect him to play this Saturday, which would mean another weak of Zack Moss serving in a lead-back role for the Colts. Taylor should remain stashed in all fantasy leagues for the time being.

From RotoBaller

Dec 8 1:30pm ET

Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen has officially ruled out running back Jonathan Taylor (thumb) from the Week 14 game this Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Taylor had surgery on his right thumb last week and will now miss his second straight game after missing another full week of practice. Fantasy managers must keep the 24-year-old lead back stashed for now, but he's expected to miss anywhere from three to five weeks, so there remains a chance that he won't be available at all to teams as they try to win a fantasy title in 2023. In the meantime, Zack Moss will operate as Indy's lead back. He'll be a must-start RB1 for fantasy lineups this weekend in a great matchup against the Bengals.
