2024 RTSports Outlook

Ekeler had his best season to date last year, finishing first overall in fantasy running back scoring. He was nearly 20 points better than the second place finisher. Ekeler had doubld-digit fantasy points every single game, which showed his remarkable consistency. He also had four games with 30-plus fantasy points, posting huge numbers in addition to consistent ones. And he did this despite having just two 100-yard rushing games. His weekly reception totals gave him a huge fantasy floor. He had a career-bets 107 receptions. Ekeler also scored 18 total touchdowns in the Chargers explosive offense. He will continue to be the top back for the Chargers and get a ton of weekly touches as a runner and receiver. He has at least 900 total yards five straight seasons. He also has topped 90 receptions two of four years. He is the best receiving back in the game right now. Ekeler is a good between tackles runner that can get downhill in a hurry. He is a solid one-cut runner. He also catches the ball very well and can make plays in space. He can play like a receiver as well as a running back, making him a great three-down back.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Ekeler is probably the safe No. 1 running back pick because of his huge reception totals. It would not surprise to see him post similar numbers to last year. Injury is a bit of a concern based on his history but he has been healthy the last two seasons, which is encouraging. He can get around 1,600 total yards, double-digit scores and 100 receptions.

Updating a previous report, free-agent RB Austin Ekeler (Chargers) officially signed with the Washington Commanders Monday, March 18. Terms of the contract were not disclosed, but an earlier report stated it is a two-year contract worth as much as $11.43 million.

Dynasty | The Commanders have signed running back Austin Ekeler. Dynasty Analysis: Ekeler leaves Los Angeles and gets a two-year deal worth up to $11 million. With some of the other money being thrown around to running backs, this seems like a bargain for Washington and a massive disappointment for Ekeler. After betting on himself after posting 25 rushing touchdowns in the previous two years, Ekeler struggled this season and posted only five on the year. To make matters worse, his reception total went from 107 to 51. He'll replace Antonio Gibson for the Commanders but it clearly seems the days of him being an RB1 in dynasty leagues are all but over.

Impending free-agent RB Austin Ekeler (Chargers) agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the Washington Commanders Monday, March 11, worth as much as $11.43 million, according to sources.

Fantasy Spin: Ekeler likely will share playing time with Brian Robinson Jr. but should see a decent amount of touches each game. He probably can be considered a No. 2 running back or flex option most weeks next season.

Veteran free-agent running back Austin Ekeler is signing with the Washington Commanders on Monday on a two-year deal worth up to $11.43 million, according to sources. Ekeler is headed to the East coast after seven seasons and 69 total touchdowns with the Los Angeles Chargers. The 28-year-old was extremely productive in his time with the Bolts, but he's coming off one of his worst statistical seasons in 2023 and is now heading to a Commanders backfield where he'll be expected to split the workload with Brian Robinson. On a side note, former Commanders RB Antonio Gibson agreed to join the New England Patriots. Gone are the days of Ekeler being a no-doubt RB1 for fantasy managers, although he still has the talent to be a highly productive RB3/flex option, especially in PPR leagues. In addition, the Commanders' signing of Ekeler is going to be bad news for B-Rob's fantasy ceiling.

Mar 11 5:50pm ET

The Washington Commanders and Las Vegas Raiders have made preliminary inquiries on free-agent running back Austin Ekeler, according to a source. CBS Sports' Josina Anderson writes that Ekeler's situation remains fluid at this time, but he could choose his next landing spot relatively quickly after Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs and Tony Pollard have all agreed with new teams on Monday. The Commanders lost Antonio Gibson and the Raiders lost Jacobs, so they have obvious needs in their backfield right now. The 28-year-old Ekeler is coming off one of the worst years of his career in 2023, with 628 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground after scoring a career-high 13 TDs in 2022. A change of scenery could easily lead to a bounce-back campaign, but fantasy managers probably aren't going to treat him as the high-end RB1 like they did in 2023 drafts.

Impending free-agent RB Austin Ekeler (Chargers) has received preliminary interest from the Washington Commanders and Las Vegas Raiders, according to a source.

Fantasy Spin: Ekeler will be part of a committee if he signs with either the Commanders or Raiders but probably would still see a good amount of touches during games. He should be involved in both the running and passing game no matter where he signs and can be a No. 2 running back or flex option in most leagues.

The New York Giants are 'looking at' Los Angeles Chargers impending free-agent RB Austin Ekeler and Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent RB Tony Pollard in free agency, ESPN's Dan Graziano wrote on Sunday, March 10.

From TheHuddle

Feb 26 7:10pm ET

The Los Angeles Chargers are expected to let impending free-agent running back Austin Ekeler explore free agency in 2024, according to league sources, which means they won't use the franchise tag on him. Ekeler was one of the biggest early round fantasy busts in 2023, as the 28-year-old finished with 628 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 179 carries in 14 games in his seventh year with the Chargers. He also had 51 receptions (74 targets) for 436 yards and one touchdown through the air. Ekeler has never had 1,000 yards rushing in his career and could face an uncertain future if he leaves LA. He's not going to be a first-round fantasy pick in fall drafts, but Ekeler has bounce-back potential if he's healthy and in a significant role, whether it be with the Chargers or another team.

Feb 26 6:13pm ET

Dynasty | Chargers running back Austin Ekeler is likely to hit the free agent market. Dynasty Analysis: Ekeler rushed 179 times for 628 yards and five touchdowns while averaging a career-low 3.5 yards per carry, becoming one of the most disappointing players in dynasty leagues last season. The production level fell off a cliff for one of the most consistent players in dynasty leagues and the concern level for Ekeler is high based on his age and massive decline. It's highly likely he finds himself on a team as a receiving complement but also just as likely he's not a bell cow runner at this stage in his career. His landing spot will be crucial to truly evaluate where he needs to ranked but Ekeler's days as an elite RB1 are likely over.

Feb 12 5:33pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers impending free-agent RB Austin Ekeler is a player head coach Jim Harbaugh said he would like the team to re-sign this offseason.

Fantasy Spin: Fantasy players will need to monitor the situation to see where Ekeler plays next season. He is coming off a disappointing 2023 season but still probably will be able to find a starting a job with a team. He can be a starting option in most fantasy leagues if he plays better next season.

From TheHuddle

Feb 11 1:20pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said that the team would like to retain running back Austin Ekeler, who will officially become a free agent in March. "If things go well, it's going to be because of guys like Austin Ekeler and the players," Harbaugh said. "I like Austin Ekeler. We're going to have a huge emphasis on the run game, and we gotta block better up front. He's a tremendous back and we'd love to have him on the team next year." The 28-year-old back was one of fantasy's biggest busts in 2023, rushing for just 628 yards and five touchdowns on 179 carries while catching 51 passes for 436 yards and one receiving TD in 14 games in 2023. Ekeler could have a shot to bounce back in 2024 in offensive coordinator Greg Roman's run-friendly scheme in LA if he returns, but either way, fantasy managers won't be taking the leap on Ekeler in the first round this fall.

From RotoBaller

Jan 8 12:20am ET

Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler was terrible again in a Week 18 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Ekeler likely ends his Chargers career with an awful performance against mostly Chiefs backups. He ran the ball 10 times, gaining 11 yards total on the ground. He was targeted eight times in the passing game, making seven catches for 38 yards through the air. This wraps up Ekeler's worst season by far and likely his last as a Charger. His days as a three-down back are clearly done, but his track record is good enough that someone will certainly take a chance on him as a third down or change of pace back for next season. He'll be much further down draft boards than he was before this season regardless of his landing spot, and any dynasty league managers rostering him should try to get whatever they can for him now.

Chargers' RB Austin Ekeler averaged a dismal 1.2 yards per carry on 10 attempts in Sunday's loss against the Chiefs.

Jan 4 6:20pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler will look to stop his slide and end the season on a high note in a Week 18 game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Ekeler has had a very bad season, scoring just one touchdown in his past seven games and "earning" Pro Football Focus' worst grade among all NFL running backs since Week 6. In what is likely Ekeler's last game as a Charger and almost certainly his last game as a three-down back, he's an RB3.

Los Angeles Chargers RB Austin Ekeler rushed 13 times for 46 yards in Week 17 against the Denver Broncos, while posting a 4-yard catch on two targets.

From TheHuddle

Dec 31 7:50pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler continued his disappointing 2023 season with another nothing of a game in a Week 17 loss to the Denver Broncos. Ekeler ran the ball 13 times, gaining 46 scoreless yards and losing a fumble. He had a long gain of just six yards and only caught one pass for four yards through the air. It's been the worst season of Ekeler's career, and he'll be a free agent after a season-ending Week 18 game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Ekeler's days of being a starting running back are likely running out.

From RotoBaller

Dec 28 6:10pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler is tough to trust in fantasy lineups in a Week 17 game against the Denver Broncos. Ekeler was fairly efficient last week, but it only translated to 65 yards on the ground and 21 more through the air. He's only scored one touchdown in his last six games, and with the Chargers offense generally in shambles, it might be time to leave Ekeler on the bench to wrap up his most disappointing season to date.

From RotoBaller

Dec 24 12:10am ET

Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler had another fairly pedestrian game in a Week 16 contest against the Buffalo Bills. Ekeler ran the ball 15 times, gaining 65 yards. He also saw four passing game targets, catching three of them for 21 yards. Ekeler found some room to run against a tough Bills defense, but he couldn't find the end zone or rip off any huge gains. His biggest gain on the ground was 10 yards and his longest catch was 14. He and the Chargers will get the Broncos next week on New Year's Eve.
