2020 RTSports Outlook

The loss of Ben Roethlisberger really impacted the season of McDonald, posting disappointing numbers in a starting role for the Steelers. He did not have a game with 50-plus yards all year and had double-digit fantasy points just two times. McDonald did get some catches, though, finishing with 38 receptions. He should move to a reserve role this season with Eric Ebron on board for the Steelers. McDonald can stretch the field with his speed and can make plays after the catch. He runs routes pretty well for a tight end. McDonald isn't a great blocker, though, which can keep him off the field at times. He has more than 400 yards just one time in his career.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: McDonald is not a very exciting option with Ebron around. His numbers might even go down from last year's disappointing season, making him a stretch for fantasy teams to even consider. He could get around 25 receptions for 250 yards and a score or two.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Along with the rest of the Steelers offense in 2019, Vance McDonald suffered mightily from the season-ending injury to Ben Roethlisberger in just the second week of the season. After recording a career-high 50 catches for 610 yards and four touchdowns in 2018, many were expecting a breakout from McDonald last year. That certainly didn't happen, as he finished behind Ricky Seals-Jones as the No. 36 fantasy tight end with only 38 catches, 273 receiving yards and three scores in 14 games. Injuries remain an issue for the former second-round pick entering his age-30 season. McDonald has never played a full season in seven years in the league and will now have to compete for targets with pass-catching tight end Eric Ebron. There should be a role for McDonald and having Big Ben back to full health would be a big plus, but the fact remains that McDonald is an injury risk with an even lower ceiling. Treat him as a low-end TE2 in deeper leagues.

The Pittsburgh Steelers hope TE Eric Ebron will be able to return to his 2018 Pro Bowl form, when he caught 66 passes for 750 yards and 13 touchdowns with the Indianapolis Colts. With Ebron and Vance McDonald on roster, the team may be able to utilize both players in double tight-end sets.

Fantasy Spin: Ebron should be considered a better TE2 or DFS play than a TE1 entering the year; he'll lose some targets to McDonald, who also had a career-year in 2018 (50-610-4) and will also be looking to rebound.

Mar 16 4:43pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Vance McDonald has agreed to restructure his contract in order for the team to create some salary cap space, according to a source. The team converted McDonald's $5.5 million base salary to a signing bonus.

Fantasy Spin: McDonald had a disappointing 2019 season but should post better numbers with Ben Roethlisberger back as the quarterback. He could be a No. 2 tight end in fantasy leagues next season.

From TheHuddle

Mar 4 3:30pm ET

The Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to pick up tight end Vance McDonald's $5.5 million option for the 2020 season, according to sources. McDonald would come at a salary cap hit of $7.127 million. Pittsburgh thinks he can have a bounce-back season after struggling with two quarterbacks once Ben Roethlisberger (elbow) went down for the season in the second game. McDonald had a career-high 50 receptions for 610 yards and four touchdowns in 2018 in a full year with Big Ben to just 38 catches for 273 yards and three touchdowns in 2019. He also posted a career-low 7.2 yards per catch. The 29-year-old could easily play better next season if Roethlisberger is healthy, but McDonald also has never played a full season in his seven years in the league and will strictly be a potential upside TE2 in fantasy in deeper leagues.

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Devlin Hodges completed 9-of-25 passes for just 95 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 17 against the Baltimore Ravens, as the loss eliminated the team from the playoffs. RB Benny Snell Jr. rushed 18 times for a team-high 91 yards and a touchdown. WR Diontae Johnson led the team with four grabs for a team-high 54 yards on seven targets, while WR JuJu Smith-Schuster was limited to two grabs for six yards in the finale. TE Vance McDonald also chipped in with two snags for 19 yards on his two targets.

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Vance McDonald (non-injury) fully participated in practice Friday, Dec. 27, and is not on the injury report for Week 17.

Fantasy Spin: McDonald probably will receive a few targets in the passing game this week but can be avoided in most fantasy leagues.

Dec 27 3:13pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers C Maurkice Pouncey (knee) and RB James Conner (quad) did not practice all week and have been ruled out for Week 17 versus the Baltimore Ravens. LB Mark Barron (non-injury), OT Alejandro Villanueva (non-injury), TE Vance McDonald (non-injury), CB Steven Nelson (groin), OG David DeCastro (non-injury), LB T.J. Watt (non-injury), DT Cameron Heyward (non-injury), CB Joe Haden (foot) and OG Ramon Foster (non-injury) practiced fully on Friday, Dec. 27, and have been removed from the injury report.

From TheHuddle

Dec 27 3:10pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Vance McDonald can safely be left off your fantasy lineups in Week 17 against the Baltimore Ravens. McDonald has had a down year, catching just 36 passes for 254 yards and three touchdowns, and has just 34 yards on eight catches over the last four games. On a fantasy point per game basis, Baltimore houses the top defense against tight ends, and even though they'll likely be resting most of their starters, McDonald doesn't carry any fantasy value outside of a DFS dart throw.

From TheHuddle

Dec 22 4:30pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Vance McDonald hauled in three of his six targets for nine yards in Sunday's loss to the New York Jets. The 29-year-old clearly wasn't able to make anything happen with the looks he did receive. After sitting out Week 15 against the Bills, McDonald was hoping to return to greener pastures, but Devlin Hodges and Mason Rudolph don't move the needle. The tight end has been a disappointment almost all season and it won't get easier in Week 17 against the Ravens where McDonald can be neglected for DFS games.

Dec 20 3:43pm ET

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers TE Vance McDonald (concussion) fully participated in practice Friday, Dec. 20, and is not on the injury report for Week 16.

Fantasy Spin: McDonald has not been a big factor in the passing game this season and probably will only see a few targets this week. He can be avoided in most fantasy leagues.

Dec 20 2:10pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Vance McDonald (concussion) practiced in full all week and was taken off the final injury report for Week 16 against the Jets. McDonald missed last week but will return on Sunday to face New York. He hasn't gone over 50 yards in a single game the entire season and is coming off a one-catch performance against a Cardinals team that has been diced by tight ends all year long. With quarterback Devlin Hodges under center, we'd advise avoiding McDonald in all leagues with fantasy championships on the line.

From RotoBaller

Dec 20 2:03pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Vance McDonald on Friday, Dec. 20, cleared the concussion protocol and is expected to play in Week 16, on Sunday, Dec. 22.

Fantasy Spin: Yes, McDonald should be back after missing Week 15, but he's a super-deep league consideration only after catching more than three passes twice all season and reaching 40 yards only once with three total TDs on the year.

From TheHuddle

Dec 19 3:53pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Vance McDonald (concussion) fully participated in practice Thursday, Dec. 19.

Fantasy Spin: McDonald is on track to play and probably will see some targets during the game. He has been a disappointing fantasy option this season and can be avoided if fantasy players have other options available.

From TheHuddle

Dec 18 4:40pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Vance McDonald (concussion) went through a full practice on Wednesday. McDonald sat out on Sunday night against the Bills, but it looks like he's cleared the league's concussion protocol and is on track to return in Week 16 against the Jets. The matchup is a nice one, but McDonald hasn't gone over 40 yards in a single game this year, and two of his three touchdowns on the season came in one game. He had just one catch on one target for three yards on Dec. 8 against the Cardinals, a team that has been extremely generous to the position this year. Even if McDonald returns in Week 16, fantasy owners should be looking for more upside with everything on the line.

From RotoBaller

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Vance McDonald (concussion) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Dec. 18.

Fantasy Spin: McDonald missed the last game because of a concussion but appears to be on track to play in Week 16. He may receive some targets during the game, but fantasy players should be able to find a better option to use.

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Vance McDonald (concussion) did not participate in practice Friday, Dec. 13, and has been ruled out for Week 15.
