2019 RTSports Outlook

Gurley had another huge fantasy season, finishing third overall in running back scoring. And he did this with missing two games because of a knee injury. He wasn't quite the same player late in the year because of the injury, especially in the playoffs. But even with that said, Gurley had 21 total touchdowns and averaged a career-high 4.9 yards per carry. He had 1,831 total yards, averaging 131 total yards per game. He has 1,000-yard seasons three of four in the NFL. Gurley is a huge part of the Rams explosive offense. He is 25 years old and in the prime of his career but his knee issues are a big concern going forward. Can he bounce back or is this going to be an issue going forward? Gurley is a big back but also possesses very good speed. He does a great job of breaking tackles and making plays after contact. Gurley is great at making the big play and a much improved receiver, catching 55-plus passes each of the last two seasons. Gurley is one of the most complete backs in the game.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Gurley has some risk this year because of his finish to last season. His knee issues could be an issue. For now, we still consider him a No. 1 back but he has a few more question marks than your usual top picks. If he is healthy and near the level of past seasons, though, Gurley can get around 2,000 total yards with 18 touchdowns and 60 receptions.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Up until December 2018, Todd Gurley was the consensus #1 overall pick for 2019. In December and January, the train went completely off the rails. Now we enter 2019 unsure of what to do. A healthy Gurley is one of, if not the best running back in fantasy football. However, everything out of Los Angeles suggests Gurley is not healthy. We know Gurley has an arthritic knee. We know that in terms of real football, running backs have very little impact on the outcome of games. We saw C.J. Anderson put up better numbers than Gurley over the latter part of the season and the playoffs. We saw the Rams place a second round tender on Malcolm Brown and match the Lions' offer to keep him. We also saw the Rams trade up to spend a day two pick on Darrell Henderson. We've heard the reports that the Rams want to scale back Gurley's workload. Even with reduced usage, Gurley is a mid to low RB1, at worst. I would not take Gurley over safer players with equally high ceilings, but there comes a point where one of the best RBs in fantasy becomes worth it. As the season nears, hopefully we will learn more about Gurley's knee and have a better idea of how to handle him. For now, consider Gurley no sooner than late first round and if you want to pass on him and let someone else deal with it, I won't fault you.

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff and running back Todd Gurley are among roughly 20 starters who will be left behind for this week's preseason game against the Cowboys in Hawaii. Defensive tackle Aaron Donald and cornerback Marcus Peters are the only starters expected to make the trip, although they will not play on Saturday. Head coach Sean McVay is expected to sit his starters or key reserves in all preseason games. There's really nothing to see here in terms of fantasy, as most teams rest their starters for much, if not all, of the preseason. The Rams are also being extra cautious with Gurley because of his knee issues, and he could be limited with his touches into the regular season.

Aug 13 10:43pm ET

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) is not expected to travel with the team as it heads to Hawaii to play the Dallas Cowboys in exhibition game Saturday, Aug. 17. 'That's something that I would say, more likely than not, but we're still working through the specifics of that as we kind of get closer and closer to that. I don't have the full answer, but more likely than not, he will not go,' head coach Sean McVay said.

Fantasy Spin: Gurley wants to make the trip, but he said he will defer to McVay. It's a curious decision if McVay is as healthy as the Rams want everyone to believe, although it is also understandable why they wouldn't want an important player with a knee issue on a long flight, especially when he isn't going to play a snap anyway. Much will probably be made of the decision to leave Gurley behind if it happens, but owners should wait for something a bit more substantial before making a final decision on him for this season.

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley will be on a 'veteran plan' during training camp, getting interspersed rest days, and will not play in the preseason as the Rams aim to have him in optimal shape for the regular season. 'There will be (days he doesn't practice),' Rams coach Sean McVay said. 'There will be some days that -- depending upon his workload and looking toward that (Week 1) Carolina game -- we might look at treating him like we have some of those veteran players. Todd really has become a veteran player.'

Fantasy Spin: In other words, we won't really know much about Gurley until the games kick off for real. In the meantime, he's a risky high-reward low-end RB1.

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) wants to play the 2019 season at 218 pounds after playing most of his career around 224 pounds, according to NFL.com's Steve Wyche.

Fantasy Spin: The drop in weight - even though it is only six pounds - figures to be good for his ailing left knee. The narrative about Gurley's career being somewhat in jeopardy appears to be changing a bit as the offseason progresses, as the Rams continue to preach confidence and optimism in Gurley's health. Even though he comes with substantial risk and may be a surprise inactive from time to time, he is shaping up to be an extreme value pick for any owner lucky enough to get him in the second round of fantasy drafts.

Jul 19 12:33pm ET

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) received a vote of health and confidence Thursday, July 18, from head coach Sean McVay, who was a guest on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show. 'I think he's feeling great,' McVay said on the show of Gurley. 'I think, you know, one of the things about Todd is (he's a) great competitor. I think he's earned the right to be able to have the plan that we had this offseason. Can't wait to get him back going. I know he's ready to go and it's going to be fun for the Rams this year.'

Fantasy Spin: Of course, we've been hearing this for months regarding Gurley, and no one is really going to know until the games begin for real on Sept. 8. In the meantime, hedge your bets as best you can and value Gurley as a low-end RB1/high-end RB2 with ample risk/reward involved.

Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley (knee) said his knee is good as training camp approaches. Gurley sat out offseason workouts due to a knee injury that his trainer confirmed includes an "arthritic component." He could be brought along slowly in training camp and is unlikely to do much in the preseason as the Rams look to lighten his load in 2019. Gurley told NFL Network's Omar Ruiz that he doesn't plan to change his playing style at all. The two-time first-team All-Pro is no longer a high-end RB1 because of concerns about his health and workload going into the 2019 season, but he's still an early-round running back selection as a low-end RB1.

Jul 10 3:03pm ET

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) said he does not plan to change his playing style even though he has been dealing with knee issues.

Fantasy Spin: Gurley probably will be limited during training camp and could sit out the entire preseason. Fantasy players will need to monitor the situation during camp to see Gurley will continue to receive a majority of the carries. He is a No. 1 running back when healthy but is a risky fantasy option because of his knee.

From TheHuddle

Jul 9 11:03pm ET

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) believes sitting out organized team activities and spring workouts was good for him and 'everything went well.'

Fantasy Spin: Gurley sounded very much at peace during his interview with Sirius XM NFL Radio and did not give the impression he's the least bit concerned about his knee, which has an "arthritic component" to it, according to his trainer. There's no question he's a riskier pick this year than usual, but the potential upside is enormous. Owners should be giddy if they can take advantage of the discount on him and get him as an RB2.

Updating previous reports. Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) is in fact dealing with arthritis in his knee after months of speculation. Travelle Gaines, who has trained Gurley for three years, suggested 'not one thing has changed' in regards to his client and that 'our routine has worked, he's been strong, he's been in great shape, he's done well.' Gaines went on to say the decision this offseason to have Gurley drop six pounds and trim his body fat from 10 percent to seven was not due to injuries and more to accentuate his speed. The trainer also said 'it's never been told to me' that the Rams plan on decreasing Gurley's workload come Week 1. 'Everybody knew when Todd came out of Georgia that there would be some kind of arthritic component to his knee, which is part of every surgery whether it's a shoulder, a knee, an ankle. He's now at the Year 5 mark; all we're doing is managing that. If we can pound him less in the offseason while keeping his weight down, working on his strength, working on his agility in short areas, that's going to give him a better chance to be healthy Weeks 14 through 17 when they really count,' Gaines said.

Fantasy Spin: Gurley has quickly become the most polarizing early-round pick in fantasy drafts. Many owners have decided to take the arrival of Darrell Henderson as a sign the Rams believe the 24-year-old's best days are already behind him. However, it's worth wondering how Gurley has embarked on such a rigorous training program this offseason if his knee isn't in decent shape. Until something more damning comes out, Gurley appears to be worth the risk in drafts, especially if fantasy owners can land him as an RB2.

From TheHuddle

Jun 11 5:53pm ET

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) told reporters Tuesday, June 11, that he is 'fine' and 'doing the same kinds of things he's always done in the offseason. He also suggested the torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered in college was a 'bigger problem' for him coming out of college than his current issue.

Fantasy Spin: Owners probably won't know anything for sure until Week 1 since the Rams have made a habit of holding out their key players throughout the preseason. The Rams' actions this offseason - most notably, moving up to draft Darrell Henderson - would suggest there is some worry in the organization, but the continued focus on Gurley's knee could also allow him to be drafted this summer at a discount. Owners who don't mind a little risk could see huge rewards if/when he slips into the second round of drafts.

From TheHuddle

Jun 7 8:00pm ET

Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley told NFL Network analyst and Rams radio color commentator Maurice Jones-Drew this week that he's not hurt, but Jones-Drew said the team is planning to use Gurley less in 2019 in order to keep him fresh all year. "I think you can expect (22 touches per game). But he may not be on the field for 80 snaps," Jones-Drew said. Gurley played 75.8 percent of the regular season offensive snaps last year (56.6 snaps per game), and he's averaged 22.7 touches, 135.3 total yards and 1.4 touchdowns per game the last two seasons. However, he played just 56.2 percent of the snaps in the postseason last year. The Rams fully intend on using Malcolm Brown and rookie Darrell Henderson in the backfield to keep Gurley fresh, which makes him much more of a risk as a high-end RB1 in the first round of fantasy drafts.

From RotoBaller

Jun 5 3:40pm ET

Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley's (knee) days of being a bell-cow running back may be over due to concerns about his left knee. Gurley has been held out of on-field team practices this offseason for a "planned training program" and is trying to shed half a dozen pounds in an attempt to lighten the load on his knee. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that it's understood in LA that Gurley will no longer be the bell-cow back he's been the first four years in the NFL. "The days of Todd Gurley just being the straight-up, every-down bell cow are probably over, just based on his knee, his age, the position, the amount of carries he's had," Rapoport said. Gurley injured his knee in Week 15 last year and was limited down the stretch and into the postseason. The Rams also drafted Darrell Henderson in the third round to take pressure off of Gurley this upcoming season. Gurley will remain an RB1 in 2019, but the risk might appear to outweigh the reward now.

From RotoBaller

Jun 3 10:23pm ET

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley may look to lose some weight in order to reduce some of the stress on his knee, and head coach Sean McVay said Gurley can do what he wants so he can feel comfortable with his knee.

Fantasy Spin: Gurley has missed most of the offseason workouts because of his knee and may see his touches drop this upcoming season because of his knee. Fantasy players should monitor his status during training camp to determine his status. He is a No. 1 running back when healthy but is a risky pick at this point.

From TheHuddle

May 31 7:20pm ET

Los Angeles Rams general manager Les Snead said it's unlikely that running back Todd Gurley (knees) takes part in preseason action this year. The Rams are one of the most cautious teams when it comes to playing their starters in the preseason, so Gurley won't be the only one sitting out. Chronic knee issues have become a concern for the 24-year-old after he sat out down the stretch in the regular season and was severely limited in the NFC Championship and Super Bowl. Gurley is still worth a pick in the top three selections in the first round of fantasy drafts after rushing for 1,000-plus yards in three of his first four seasons, but he's also much more risky as an elite RB1.

From RotoBaller

May 31 6:13pm ET

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley likely will not see any playing time during the preseason, according to general manager Les Snead.

Fantasy Spin: Gurley has been dealing with a knee issue since last season but should be ready for Week 1. He is a No. 1 running back in fantasy leagues when healthy, but fantasy players should keep an eye on his status during training camp.

From TheHuddle

May 30 2:53am ET

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) reportedly plans on playing about six pounds lighter this season, according to NFL Network's Steve Wyche.

Fantasy Spin: The logic is easy to follow, less weight means less stress on the knees. Obviously the team, which will not have Gurley do any on-field drills during OTAs, and the player are doing everything they can to get him through the upcoming season. The million dollar question is will it work? At this point, the status of Gurley's knee might be the most interesting storyline in all of fantasy sports. He's still an RB1, but there are unique concerns.

From TheHuddle

May 29 12:50am ET

Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley (knee) has a specific and individualized offseason plan, and it doesn't include him taking part in team drills at organized team activities. Gurley wasn't present for any portion of Tuesday's session, and he was also absent on Monday. Head coach Sean McVay said Gurley has been working with outside trainer Travelle Gaines and that he has been a regular at the practice facility. His limited activity is adding to the speculation about the long-term health of his knee, which kept him out in Weeks 16 and 17 of last year. He also didn't look right in the NFC Championship game and the Super Bowl, so there will be a lot more risk involved when you consider taking him as a top-three fantasy pick this fall.

From RotoBaller

May 28 7:03pm ET

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) has been a regular at the team facility this offseason, according to head coach Sean McVay, despite his absence from organized team activities (OTAs) Tuesday, May 28. McVay added the team plans to hold him out of practice in the offseason.

Fantasy Spin: Gurley missed the final two games of the 2018 regular season and carried the ball a total of 16 times for 47 yards in the NFC Championship Game and Super Bowl combined. His obvious upside will keep him as a high-end RB1, but there's reason to be concerned.
