2024 RTSports Outlook

Mattison was the top backup for the Vikings once again last year and didn't get a whole lot of work in that role. He had 374 total yards and a career-high six touchdowns. Mattison had three games with double-digit fantasy points. He had a career low 89 touches on the season with Dalvin Cook able to stay healthy. Mattison will try to earn a starting role this year. He has shown flashes of good things when starting in the past, so the potential is there. Mattison is a big, powerful back that does best between the tackles. He lacks a little top-end speed and won't make a ton of plays to the outside. But he is a power back that can make plays after contact and move the pile. He also can catch the ball pretty well, showing potential as a three-down back.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Mattison has some real potential in a starting role, but needs to land that starting role first. If that happens, he could be a real find for fantasy teams. Consider him a solid No. 3 back for fantasy teams at the moment. Look for around 1,000 total yards, 30 receptions and six or so touchdowns.

Dynasty | The Raiders have signed free agent running back Alexander Mattison. Dynasty Analysis: Mattison spent four years in Minnesota waiting for an opportunity to be a starter and finally got it last season. Unfortunately, it was a total disaster as he rushed for 700 yards with more fumbles (3) than rushing touchdowns (0). He added a 30/192/3 line through the air but was hardly a difference maker in the running game. He'll slot in behind projected starter Zamir White for the moment but the Raiders may not be done adding to the depth chart. Mattison is best served as a handcuff at the moment as it's unlikely he'll be battling for a starting position any time soon.

Former Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison is signing an undisclosed deal with the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday, according to a source. Mattison is still only 25 years old and recorded 17 touchdowns in his five seasons in Minnesota after they took him in the third round in the 2019 draft out of Boise State. The 25-year-old was a disappointment in 2023 while taking over the lead-back role from Dalvin Cook, though, which is why Mattison was released this offseason. In 16 games (13 starts) last year, Mattison had a career-high 180 carries for 700 yards (3.9 yards per carry) and no rushing touchdowns while adding 30 catches for 192 yards and three touchdowns. Josh Jacobs is no longer in Vegas, but Mattison figures to work in a timeshare with Zamir White in his first year in Sin City in 2024.

Free-agent running back Alexander Mattison is visiting with the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday, according to sources. Multiple teams are in play for Mattison this point after he was cut by the Minnesota Vikings this offseason. Mattison took over the Vikings' lead-back role in 2023 after the team moved on from Dalvin Cook, but Mattison didn't impress with the extra playing time, averaging 3.9 yards per carry on a career-high 180 rushing attempts while running for 700 yards and no touchdowns in 16 games (13 starts). He added 30 receptions for 192 yards and three touchdowns on a career-high 44 targets. The Raiders didn't re-sign Josh Jacobs, so as of right now, Zamir White is their RB1 this offseason. If Mattison where to sign with Vegas, he'd most likely be involved in some sort of timeshare with White.

Dynasty | The Minnesota Vikings have released running back Alexander Mattison. Dynasty Analysis: The Vikings will pay his $3.3 million base salary in 2024 which includes $2.75 million in guaranteed money. This ends a very disappointing and equally short stint for Mattison as the Vikings lead back, In his one season as the bona fide lead back, Mattison rushed for just 700 yards and didn't have a single rushing touchdown. It was a huge letdown for dynasty managers who invested real capital in his services. At this point, Mattison has dropped all the way to our RB45 and this move won't help much.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Feb 29 7:40pm ET

The Minnesota Vikings informed running back Alexander Mattison on Thursday that they are releasing him, according to a source. Mattison took over in 2023 for Dalvin Cook as Minnesota's primary running back and ran for a career-high 700 yards on 180 carries (3.9 yards per carry) and no touchdowns while adding 30 catches on 44 targets for 192 yards and three receiving scores in 16 games. The 25-year-old will head back to the free-agent market this offseason, but this time he won't be returning to the Vikings. It was clear early on that Mattison wasn't the answer for the Vikes' running game, as he was often stuffed behind the line of scrimmage and lacked any kind of consistent burst. After his 2023 showing, his fantasy stock has plummeted, and he'll likely be in some sort of timeshare in 2024 wherever he lands.

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison had just two carries for negative yardage in Week 16, as he ceded lead-back duties to Ty Chandler despite being active. Mattison was limited in practice this week with an ankle ailment, which is even more reason not to trust the Boise State product in Week 17 against the Packers. Despite having a matchup against the third-worst run defense in the NFL, Mattison should not be in lineups this week considering that his workload will be limited.

Dec 29 12:20am ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison (ankle) remained limited at Thursday's practice with the ankle injury that he suffered in Week 14. Mattison had to miss Week 15 on a short week with the game landing on a Saturday but was able to return to Minnesota's backfield for five snaps in last Sunday's loss to the Detroit Lions. Though Mattison appears to be on track to play on New Year's Eve for Sunday Night Football against the division-rival Green Bay Packers, the clock sure looks to have reached midnight on the 25-year-old back's fantasy appeal. Mattison took just two carries in Week 16, apparently ceding lead-back duties to Ty Chandler's eight totes in a pass-heavy Vikings offense. Mattison was trusted as the team's workhorse after they let Dalvin Cook walk away this past offseason, but he owns 3.9 yards per carry over 170 attempts and six drops this year. Mattison will not a reliable RB4/flex if available for the fantasy finals.

Dec 27 7:30pm ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison (ankle) was estimated as a limited participant in the team's walkthrough practice on Wednesday. A right-ankle sprain cost Mattison the team's Week 15 contest, but he returned in this past Sunday's loss to the division-rival Detroit Lions. However, the 25-year-old only played five offensive snaps and handled two carries for minus-one yard. Ty Chandler didn't exactly do much, either, with eight carries for 17 yards and a touchdown against a stout Lions run defense. Mattison should be active once again this Sunday evening versus the division-rival Green Bay Packers, but it's very possible that Chandler continues to handle the majority of the backfield touches. With a fantasy championship on the line in Week 17, we hope fantasy managers have better RB options than Mattison.

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison (ankle) is officially active for Week 16 versus the Detroit Lions. However, as NFL Network's Tom Pelissero noted on Sunday morning, the 25-year-old is less than 100 percent and could have some limitations while operating behind Ty Chandler, who dominated with 157 total yards and one touchdown last weekend. While it's unclear exactly what this backfield split will look like, Chandler is expected to get the bulk of opportunities, presumably putting him in the high-end RB3 range versus a strong Lions run defense. Meanwhile, Mattison, who is dealing with his injury, a reduced role, and a difficult matchup, can be left on the bench in most fantasy leagues.

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison (ankle) is expected to play in Week 16 despite being listed as questionable, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. However, the 25-year-old is less than 100 percent and could take a backseat to Ty Chandler, who dominated with 157 total yards and one touchdown last weekend. While it's unclear exactly what this backfield split will look like, Pelissero made it clear that the Vikings will continue to "ride" Chandler, presumably putting him in the high-end RB3 range versus a strong Lions run defense. Meanwhile, Mattison, who is dealing with his injury and a reduced role, can be left on the bench in most fantasy leagues.

Dec 22 2:30pm ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison (ankle) returned to practice on Friday and is officially listed as questionable for Week 16 versus the Detroit Lions. While Mattison doesn't appear to be 100 percent quite yet, it's a good sign that the Vikings are leaving the door open for him to play. The bad news, though, is that Ty Chandler will earn a heavy dose of touches out of the backfield this Sunday after he exploded for 157 scrimmage yards in Week 15. It's not clear exactly what this backfield split will look like, but fantasy managers should prepare for Mattison dropping to the low-end RB3 tier if active.

Dec 21 9:30pm ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison (ankle) did not suit up for Thursday's practice session. This is now back-to-back days that Mattison has sat out while he recovers from an ankle injury. It's worth noting that Mattison hasn't practiced in any capacity since suffering his ankle injury in Week 14. That means, Mattison is trending towards missing his second straight game. If that happens, Ty Chandler would be asked to operate as the lead back against the Detroit Lions. Chandler looked solid last week and would have decent streaming appeal if Mattison is unable to play.

From RotoBaller

Dec 20 5:20pm ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison (ankle) was not seen at the portion of Wednesday's walkthrough practice that was open to the media. Head coach Kevin O'Connell didn't rule out Mattison for Sunday's Week 16 contest against the Detroit Lions, but he also spoke more strongly on Wednesday than he did on Monday about the likelihood of Ty Chandler serving as the team's primary RB for the second straight game. Mattison sprained his right ankle in Week 14 and sat out last Saturday's overtime loss to the Cincinnati Bengals while Chandler exploded for 23 carries, 132 rushing yards and a touchdown while adding three catches for 25 yards. If Mattison can't practice the rest of the week and doesn't play on Sunday, Chandler will be in play yet again as an RB2 in fantasy, but this time in a much tougher matchup against the division-rival Lions.

From RotoBaller

Dec 18 11:13am ET

Dynasty | Ty Chandler rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries while also producing 25 yards on 3-of-3 receiving in week 15. Dynasty Analysis: With Alexander Mattison sitting this one out due to injury, Chandler stepped up in a big way during the first week of fantasy playoffs. The performance muddies the water related to his current rotation with Mattison though it would be a disappointment if Chandler isn't the RB1 now following this effort. Mattison has generally been a disappointment as a first-year starter and he has one year remaining on his contract. As for Chandler, he looked fresh, three-down capable and figures to play a prominent role over the remaining three weeks of the regular season. Listed as DLF's RB60 and still only 25 years-of-age, Ty Chandler is a name to watch in 2024.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Dec 14 2:50pm ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison (ankle) has been ruled out for Week 15's game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The ankle injury that forced Mattison out of Week 14's game against the Raiders kept him out of practice all week, and now the backfield will be in the hands of Ty Chandler. Chandler had fantasy circles rumbling about a possible depth chart shake-up after he out-carried Mattison in Week 10 and then logged 110 yards from scrimmage the next week. No such change was ever made official, but now Chandler will operate as Minnesota's lead rusher and may see a fair amount of check-downs from quarterback Nick Mullens. Fantasy managers should be aware that the Vikings are in one of Week 15's three Saturday games and should plan accordingly.

From RotoBaller

Dec 13 3:10pm ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison (ankle) was not seen at practice on Wednesday as he nurses an ankle injury he picked up in the Week 14 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. Mattison was also listed as a DNP on Tuesday, so it's looking increasingly unlikely that he'll play on Saturday against the Cincinnati Bengals unless he's able to do something during Thursday's practice. Ty Chandler played 79 percent of the offensive snaps on Sunday in the second half and would be the Vikings' lead back in Week 15 if Mattison is unable to play. Kene Nwangu would see a larger role as the change-of-pace back as well. Chandler should be picked up ASAP off the waiver wire if he's available and you have Mattison rostered or are in need of RB help in Week 15.

From RotoBaller

Dec 12 7:10pm ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison (ankle) was listed as a non-participant on the Tuesday's estimated practice report due to an ankle injury that he suffered in the Week 14 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. He was able to pick up 66 yards on the ground on 10 carries on Sunday before departing the game due to a low right-ankle sprain. We won't know until later in the week if the 25-year-old will be able to play in Week 15's contest against the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday. In the meantime, fantasy managers need to prepare for the possibility that Minnesota's lead back misses this week. If that happens, Ty Chandler would operate as the Vikings' primary ball-carrier out of the backfield, giving him clear RB2 upside in a plus matchup. If Chandler is available on your waiver wire and you're in a pickle at the RB position, pick him up now.

From RotoBaller

Dec 10 8:30pm ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison (ankle) suffered a sprained ankle during Sunday's win over the Las Vegas Raiders. The 25-year-old had 10 carries for 66 yards before his premature exit, with his absence opening the door for Ty Chandler to amass 35 yards off 12 touches. Nevertheless, Mattison will likely undergo further testing. For now, fantasy managers should at least consider Mattison questionable for the Week 15 clash with the Cincinnati Bengals. If he can't suit up, Chandler will be a popular streaming option for managers in all formats.

From RotoBaller

Dec 10 6:10pm ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison (ankle) is questionable to return to Sunday's game versus the Raiders. Mattison had played well before going down with an ankle injury, amassing 66 yards off 10 carries. With Justin Jefferson (chest) out for the game, the Vikings can't afford another loss of that magnitude. But if Mattison can't return, Ty Chandler will likely lead the way for the remainder of the contest.

From RotoBaller

Dec 9 3:50pm ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison will look to get back on track in Week 14 as the Vikings take on the Raiders, who have allowed the ninth-most rushing yards this season. Mattison has struggled to find the end zone this year, as he hasn't scored since Week 9 versus the Falcons. He has punched it in just three times this season, all of which have come through the air as he has failed to rush in a touchdown through 12 games this season. It is hard to trust the Boise State product despite his lead-back role, as he hasn't been getting enough volume to overcome his inefficiency, which means he is a touchdown-dependent fantasy option in an offense that likes to throw the ball. Mattison is more of a FLEX option moving forward, rather than the solid RB2 he was valued as earlier in the season.
