2021 RTSports Outlook

Stafford was on his way to a big bounce-back season, but injured his back in Week 8 and didn't play the rest of the year. He was on pace for 4,998 yards, 38 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Stafford had three straight 300-yard games to end his season. He had three games with 30-plus fantasy points. His injury shouldn't be an issue going forward. Stafford should be just fine for the coming year. It seems he has been in the league a long time, but Stafford is just 32 years old. He still has plenty of good years left. Stafford has been a top-10 fantasy quarterback three of his last five seasons. Stafford has seven 4,000-yard seasons and three of those seasons with 30-plus scores. Stafford has a huge arm, moves around the pocket well and is a big, strong quarterback. He will force some passes, but has really improved on that in recent years.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Stafford was on his way to a huge season last year before the injury. He would have been a top-five fantasy quarterback. He might have a hard time repeating those big numbers but should be considered a low-end No. 1 fantasy quarterback. Don't overlook him come draft day. He can provide good value. Stafford will throw for around 4,500 yards and get around 30 touchdowns.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Detroit Lions wide receiver Marvin Jones enjoyed another productive 2019 season. Following an injury-plagued 2018, Jones rebounded, catching 62 balls for 779 yards and nine touchdowns in 13 games. He finished as the number 28 receiver in full PPR leagues. While Jones could face regression in the touchdown department, his overall role in the Lions offense is secured. Last season, he averaged 7.1 targets per game and enjoyed a 20.2% target share. He also played 94.1% of snaps and ran routes on 90.3% of pass plays. Jones is a high-volume player in a pass-heavy offense. In addition to volume, Jones benefited from averaging 1.5 deep targets per game and a 26.3% target share in the red zone. Not only is he a high-volume player, but he also receives tons of high-value targets.Matthew Staffordis back healthy, which bodes well for the entire offense. Jones is being drafted as the number 44 wide receiver off the board. This price represents a value as Jones is likely to repeat his WR3 production from last year. Injuries remain a concern with Jones, but this risk is baked into his draft-day cost. Jones is a solid value at his current price, as the veteran wideout offers a solid WR3 or WR4 option for fantasy owners.

Incoming Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford told the Detroit Lions that he was not interested in being traded to the New England Patriots, according to a source. The Lions have agreed to trade Stafford to the Rams.

Fantasy Spin: The Patriots had been linked to Stafford over the last few weeks but will have to look for other options. The next quarterback for the Patriots may only be a No. 2 fantasy quarterback depending on what they add at receiver and tight end this offseason. Stafford will have a good receiving corps to work with in 2021 and can be a low-end No. 1 or a high-end No. 2 fantasy quarterback.

Jan 31 10:33am ET

QB Matthew Stafford's contract is not expected to change as a result of his recent trade from the Detroit Lions to the Los Angeles Rams, meaning that he will not receive an extension or a raise. He has two years left on his current deal and is slated to earn $43 million.

Fantasy Spin: Stafford should be able to deliver QB1 fantasy production in a Sean McVay-led offense next season with improved weapons surrounding him, although the buzz surrounding the trade could lead to him being somewhat overvalued in many seasonal drafts.

The Los Angeles Rams have agreed to acquire QB Matthew Stafford from the Detroit Lions in exchange for QB Jared Goff, a 2021 third-round pick, a 2022 first-round pick and a 2023 first-round pick, according to sources.

Fantasy Spin: Stafford will have a chance to show what he can do with upgraded weapons in a Sean McVay-led offense. He should be able to deliver QB1 numbers, but the buzz from the blockbuster deal could inflate his fantasy value a bit.

The Detroit Lions agreed to trade QB Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams Saturday, Jan. 30, in exchange for QB Jared Goff, a 2021 third-round pick, a 2022 first-round pick and a 2023 first-round pick, according to sources.

Fantasy Spin: Goff was up and down, at best, during his tenure with the Rams, and the move to a Detroit offense with no running game and a questionable receiving corps is unlikely to help with the consistency issues. It is hard to imagine Goff being more than a midrange QB2 in 2021.

From TheHuddle

Jan 30 10:20pm ET

The Detroit Lions are trading quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for quarterback Jared Goff, two future first-round picks, and a future third. Los Angeles is clearly betting that Stafford can get the team over the hump and win them a Super Bowl. It's not a bad bet when you factor in that Goff threw for six fewer touchdowns and three more interceptions than Stafford last season and that Stafford will have some solid weapons around him. Stafford's situation is a clear improvement over last year, as he'll have a great offensive mind in Sean McVay coaching him. He's thrown for 30 or more touchdowns just twice in his career, but a third time could be coming. Consider Stafford a high-end QB2 with QB1 upside at this point.

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell said that trade talks for quarterback Matthew Stafford have gotten "hot and heavy." With Detroit taking a long-term approach to their current rebuild, they decided after the season that they would be parting ways with Stafford. The 33-year-old veteran considers the Los Angeles Rams as a viable contender in his trade market, but it could be complicated considering current LA quarterback Jared Goff's contract. While the Lions will surely trade Stafford before he's due a $10 million roster bonus on March 21, a trade could happen before the Super Bowl. He threw for 4,084 yards, 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in what will be his last season in Detroit after 12 seasons. There's not much upside at this point in his career for fantasy purposes, but Stafford could be an attractive high-end QB2, depending on where he lands.

Jan 30 1:03pm ET

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford has drawn 'significant' interest on the trade market, and NFL reporter Ian Rapoport said Saturday, Jan. 30 to expect a deal to be in place before the Super Bowl on Feb. 7.

Fantasy Spin: The deal won't become official until the new league year begins in March, but the Alex Smith trade in 2018 opened the door for early offseason transactions. Expect news soon.

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford considers the Los Angeles Rams a contender in his trade market, according to sources. The Rams have explored the possibility of trading for Stafford, although it's unknown what they can do with current quarterback Jared Goff's long-term deal on the books. Cutting Goff would cost LA $65.2 million in dead money and trading him would cost $22.2 million. New Detroit general manager Brad Holmes was a long-time Rams executive before being hired earlier this month. The Lions are looking for fair market value for Stafford, who is the franchise leader in every major passing category. Trading Stafford will mean $19 million in dead money for the Lions in 2021, saving them $14 million in salary cap space. He also has a $10 million roster bonus due on March 22, the fifth day of the new league year. Stafford has thrown for 45,109 yards, 282 touchdown and 144 interceptions in his career.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford reportedly considers the Los Angeles Rams 'a viable contender in his trade market,' according to multiple sources. The Rams have also reportedly 'explored the possibilities' with Stafford despite not knowing what they can do with Jared Goff's long-term contract on the books.

Fantasy Spin: The Rams lack a first-round pick in the 2021 draft, but they may have an ace in the hole in the form of new general manager Brad Holmes, who just left Los Angeles earlier this month after serving as the team's director of college scouting for years. The San Francisco 49ers are also reportedly in the Stafford market, so things could get interesting between the NFC West rivals very quickly. Stafford has a $10 million roster bonus due to him on March 21, so look for Detroit to move him before then.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford will likely be traded this offseason, and the New England Patriots are one of the two 'front-runners' due to their quarterback need and favorable salary cap situation, according to a recent article written for The Athletic.

Fantasy Spin: Stafford projects as a high-end QB2 most anywhere he lands, but the Patriots would be more concerning than most given their current crop of underwhelming pass-catchers.

From TheHuddle

Jan 27 11:33am ET

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford has garnered interest from about one-third of the NFL, according to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, who opines the team could get a first-round pick for him.

Fantasy Spin: Stafford was 15th in fantasy points at the position this year even after playing all 16 games. The position has deepened, especially with dual-threat options, and it's hard to see him landing anywhere that will make him more than a low-end QB1 or high-end backup in fantasy.

From TheHuddle

Jan 26 5:00pm ET

Teams are already reaching out to the Detroit Lions to initiate trade talks to figure out what it will cost to acquire quarterback Matthew Stafford, according to sources. With a new general manager in place and a new coaching staff for 2021 and beyond, it was reported last weekend that the Lions have mutually agreed to part ways with Stafford, so teams are already reaching out for the 32-year-old. Stafford missed eight games due to injury in 2019, but he was able to play a full 16 games this season despite dealing with multiple injuries. He finished the year with 4,084 yards on a 64.2 completion percentage with 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Stafford doesn't have a ton of upside at this stage of his career, but the 2014 Pro Bowler could offer some nice value in fantasy drafts in 2021, depending on where he winds up. Stay tuned.

Jan 24 12:43pm ET

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford is expected to be traded this offseason, and the New England Patriots likely will least inquire about Stafford's availability, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Mike Reiss.

Fantasy Spin: Cam Newton is not expected to return to the Patriots, so the team will be looking for a new quarterback this offseason. Stafford will be a starter no matter where he plays and can be at least a high-end No. 2 fantasy quarterback.

From TheHuddle

Jan 24 12:40pm ET

The Detroit Lions will be hiring former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn as their next offensive coordinator, according to sources. Lynn had other options, but he wanted to work with new head coach Dan Campbell and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, who played for the Cowboys when Lynn coached in Dallas. The 52-year-old Lynn was with the Chargers from 2017 to 2020 and went 33-31. Prior to that, he was the offensive coordinator in Buffalo in 2016. Lynn was the running backs coach in Dallas in 2005 when Campbell was a tight end. Lynn had the best rushing offense in Buffalo in 2016, as the team averaged 164.4 yards per game and 5.35 yards per carry. With the Lions moving on from Matthew Stafford this offseason, Lynn will likely be working with a new QB, but second-year back D'Andre Swift will be in good hands in an offense that will likely lean heavily on the ground attack.

Jan 24 12:20am ET

The Detroit Lions and quarterback Matthew Stafford will reportedly part ways this offseason, with Detroit exploring trade options for the former No. 1 overall pick. The Lions will likely look to take a rookie quarterback early in April's draft, something that will likely limit the overall effectiveness of their passing attack. As for Stafford, teams like the 49ers and Colts could be interesting landing spots that would see Stafford's fantasy arrow trending up.

From RotoBaller

Jan 23 6:43pm ET

Updating a previous story, Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford is likely to be traded before the fifth day of the 2021 league year in March, when he is due a $10 million bonus.

From TheHuddle

Jan 23 6:23pm ET

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford has expressed a desire for a fresh start and the team plans to begin exploring trade possibilities in the coming weeks, according to sources Saturday, Jan. 23.

Fantasy Spin: The Lions own the No. 7 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and could target a rookie there or try to climb up the board. Until that situation resolves itself, Detroit pass-catchers would be risky fantasy options in early drafts. Stafford is likely to be a low-end QB1 regardless of where he ends up.

From TheHuddle

Jan 17 2:00pm ET

The Detroit Lions are set to usher in their next head coach, Dan Campbell, following the New Orleans Saints' elimination from the 2020 postseason. Campbell currently serves as the Saints' assistant head coach and tight ends coach, a gig that he has reprised since 2016. A former member of the Lions, who was on the infamous 0-16 team in 2008, Campbell has head coaching experience from a '15 stint with the Dolphins where he went 5-7 as the interim HC. Arguably the biggest decision on Campbell and his staff's slate will be whether or not quarterback Matthew Stafford is back under center in '21. Having drawn rave reviews from media prognosticators for the staff that he could assemble, check back once Campbell begins to fill out coordinator gigs.
