2020 RTSports Outlook

Stafford had one of his worst seasons of his career, scoring just 21 touchdowns. He finished 20th overall in fantasy quarterback scoring. The entire Lions offense struggled, though, because of injuries and trade (Golden Tate). Stafford felt the impact of this, leading to arguably his worst statistical season as a full-time starter. He did complete 66 percent of his passes, which was a positive, but averaged just 6.81 yards per pass attempt. Stafford broke a streak of three straight seasons as a top-10 fantasy quarterback. He will look to rebound this year in the Lions pass-friendly offense. Before last season, Stafford had seven straight 4,000-yard seasons and three of those seasons with 30-plus scores. Stafford has a huge arm, moves around the pocket well and is a big, strong quarterback. He will force some passes, but has really improved on that in recent years. He has taken his game to a new level in recent seasons before last season's hiccup.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Stafford is a good buy-low candidate. He has a track record of success and been a top-10 fantasy quarterback in recent seasons. But even with that said, consider him a top No. 2 quarterback and platoon player. Stafford will throw for around 4,300 yards and get around 30 touchdowns.

RotoBaller's Outlook

After seven straight seasons as a top-15 fantasy quarterback five of which featured top-10 finishes the 2018 season wasnt kind to Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, who struggled all year and finished as the overall QB20. Stafford threw for under 4000 yards for the first time as a full-time starter, and while he completed a higher percentage of his passes than he did in 2016 or 2017, he finished with just 21 touchdown passes, his fewest since 2012. Factor in his usual double-digit interceptions, and 2018 was a year that Stafford, Lions fans, and Stafford fantasy owners would love to forget. But will he bounce back in 2019? The Lions added Danny Amendola to their receiving room, but at this point, he wont be a great replacement for the traded Golden Tate. Rookie tight end T.J. Hockenson should help, but the Lions, behind Kerryon Johnson, are likely to depend more on their running game this year. Staffords career history suggest he can return to the top-10 at the quarterback position, but last years performance and the small improvements the team made this offseason suggest that fantasy owners shouldnt have much confidence in that, especially as younger quarterbacks continue to improve around the league. Staffords a solid, late-round pick to be your teams backup quarterback, but look elsewhere for someone to trust as your fantasy starter.

The Detroit Lions agreed to a five-year, $50 million deal with offensive tackle Halapoulivaati Vaitai on Monday, according to a source. He should start at right tackle in 2020 and beyond in Detroit and help protect quarterback Matthew Stafford. Vaitai has made just 20 starts in 55 career games but was highly coveted by several teams on the open market. He was pretty efficient on the right side of the Eagles offensive line in 2019.

The Detroit Lions will not select Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in this year's draft, according to a source that ESPN.com's Matthew Berry highly trusts. Berry said there is "no chance" that happens. The Lions have the No. 3 pick behind the Bengals at No. 1 and Redskins at No. 2. Cincinnati is expected to take LSU's Joe Burrow, but the Lions are content with Matthew Stafford and are expected to go the defensive route with the third overall selection. It's possible another team trades up at No. 4 with the Giants to take Tagovailoa. If that doesn't happen, seeing Tua go to the Dolphins at No. 5 wouldn't be a shock at all.

Mar 2 2:13pm ET

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (back) is 'completely healed' from the fracture in his back that cost him the final eight games of the 2019 season, according to his wife via social media.

Fantasy Spin: There's been a ton of speculation this offseason that Stafford's days might be numbered in Detroit, but just about everyone with a say in the Lions' organization has denied that. Stafford was on track for one of the best years of his career prior to going down, and it is a reasonable bet he'll need to post QB1 numbers yet again in 2020 if Detroit doesn't add a significant amount of talent this offseason.

From TheHuddle

Mar 1 10:23am ET

Several coaches and general managers around the National Football League believe that Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford wants to be traded to another team, according to Michael Silver of the NFL Network.

Fantasy Spin: Within the last few weeks, Lions head coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn have both denied that Stafford will be traded this offseason. However, it is interesting to note that the rumors may continue to swirl due to the player's perceived dissatisfaction with the club rather than the team actively trying to move him. After missing half of the 2019 campaign due to back and hip injuries, Stafford should be viewed as a midrange QB1 option entering next season's fantasy drafts.

From TheHuddle

Feb 27 2:03pm ET

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (back) has been the subject of offseason trade rumors, but head coach Matt Patricia shot down those reports Thursday, Feb. 27, in a NFL Network interview. 'It's comical,' Patricia said. 'Not interested in doing anything with that. It's not even a conversation. He's one of the reasons I came to Detroit.'

Fantasy Spin: Stafford just turned 32 and is coming off his first non-full season since 2010. He was playing some of his best football before the injury, averaging 312.3 passing yards and 2.4 TD passes over eight games. Barring a big surprise, he'll be back in Detroit and will deserve back-end QB1 fantasy consideration this offseason.

From TheHuddle

Feb 25 4:13pm ET

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (back) has already resumed working out and will be ready to go for the start of the team's offseason program, according to general manager Bob Quinn Tuesday, Feb. 25.

From TheHuddle

Feb 25 1:00pm ET

Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn said that quarterback Matthew Stafford (back) is already working out and will be a full-go for the start of the offseason program. Stafford was on his way to a career year in 2019 before breaking his back and missing the final eight games of the season. It's a great sign that he's recovered nicely and won't miss any of the offseason workouts for Detroit. With Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones and Danny Amendola all back for 2020, Stafford will be a solid QB1 target and could potentially come at a nice price given his serious injury last season. He'll also have emerging young tight end T.J. Hockenson as a nice red-zone weapon.

From RotoBaller

Feb 13 12:20pm ET

Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn refuted a Wednesday night report that the team is in talks to trade quarterback Matthew Stafford. "100% False!!" Quinn wrote in a text message to the Free Press. Stafford is entering his 12th season in the NFL and threw for 2,499 yards, 19 touchdowns and five interceptions while setting a career-high passer rating in just eight games before suffering a back injury that caused him to miss the rest of the season. Detroit has the No. 3 pick in the draft, prompting speculation that they could move on from Stafford and select another QB. Stafford gives the Lions the best chance to win in 2020, and the team would incur a $32 million salary cap hit if they trade him.

From RotoBaller

Feb 13 10:23am ET

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford is the subject of trade rumors, but general manager Bob Quinn stated the rumors are '100 percent false.'

Fantasy Spin: Stafford was third in fantasy points per game at the position, but he missed half of the season. He'll be a midrange QB1 with some injury risk next season.

From TheHuddle

Jan 22 12:43am ET

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (back, hip) is 'pretty much at full health,' according to GM Bob Quinn, who adds that the team is 'totally happy and comfortable' with Stafford as their starting quarterback in 2020.

Fantasy Spin: Stafford was playing very good football prior to getting injured and looking like a borderline QB1. Assuming everything progresses as planned with his recovery he'd make a nice backup fantasy quarterback that can step in as needed.

From TheHuddle

Jan 4 11:43pm ET

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (back, hip) ranked second in the NFL in passing yards per game (312.4), second in yards per pass attempt (8.6) and fifth in QBR (70.1) in the eight games he played in 2019.

Fantasy Spin: Stafford is expected to be ready for offseason activities, and as long as he doesn't suffer any setbacks, he should enter 2020 as a matchup-based QB1 or high-end QB2.

From TheHuddle

Jan 3 8:30pm ET

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford (back), who missed the final eight games of the season with a back injury, said he currently feels really good physically and expects to be ready for the team's offseason program in March without any limitations. At the time of his injury in Week 9 against the Raiders, Stafford was completing 64.3 percent of his passes for 2,499 yards, 19 touchdowns, five interceptions and a passer rating of 106.0. He was leading the NFL in 20-plus yard completions (41) and had a career-best yards-per-attempt average of 8.6. Back injuries to end the last two seasons might be worrisome for fantasy owners heading into the 2020 season, but Stafford's play before his injury in 2019 should make most confident that he'll be at least a low-end QB1 next season.

From RotoBaller

Dec 30 7:23pm ET

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (back) said his recovery is on schedule and expects to be ready for the start of offseason workouts.

Fantasy Spin: Stafford threw for 2,499 yards and 19 touchdowns in eight games this season and is on track to regain his starting job next season. He can be considered a low-end No. 1 or a No. 2 quarterback in fantasy leagues.

From TheHuddle

Dec 17 6:10pm ET

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford (back) was placed on the injured reserve Tuesday, ending his season. Had the Lions been fighting for a playoff spot, there is the possibility that Stafford could have returned, but at this point shutting him down for the season was the obvious choice. Stafford was on pace for a career year in his second under head coach Matt Patricia and should be a popular mid-range quarterback pick in fantasy drafts next season. This news doesn't bode well for Kenny Golladay, who has been hit especially hard without his starting quarterback. David Blough should be under center for the Lions remaining two games of the season.

From RotoBaller

Dec 17 4:23pm ET

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (back, hip) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Dec. 17.

Fantasy Spin: David Blough will likely play out the string for the Lions. Stafford's season ends with 2,499 passing yards, 19 touchdowns and five interceptions. After missing 19 of 32 games to begin his career, his absences this season are his first since 2010. Stafford figures to be considered a solid QB2 with QB1 upside in fantasy drafts in 2020.

From TheHuddle

Dec 15 11:33am ET

The Detroit Lions have declared DL A'Shawn Robinson, OG Beau Benzschawel, RB Bo Scarbrough, QB Matthew Stafford, CB Michael Jackson, LB Christian Jones and OT Ricky Wagner inactive for Week 15.

From TheHuddle

Dec 15 4:20am ET

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford (back) will sit out once again and will not play on Sunday against Tampa Bay. Stafford is progressing, but still doesn't feel well enough to play, with the potential for a return this season unlikely, albeit still possible. Nonetheless, David Blough, who has thrown three touchdowns and three picks this season, will get another start against a weak Buccaneers Defense. For those in need of a quarterback in Week 15, the rookie does have upside, but also an equally low downside.

From RotoBaller

Dec 13 7:33pm ET

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (back, hip) did not participate in practice Friday, Dec. 13, and has been ruled out for Week 15.

Fantasy Spin: David Blough will continue to be the starting quarterback while Stafford is out of the lineup but should be avoided in all fantasy leagues.

From TheHuddle

Dec 13 4:53pm ET

Detroit Lions OG Joe Dahl (back, knee), LB Jarrad Davis (ankle, knee), DT A'Shawn Robinson (shoulder), QB Matthew Stafford (hip, back) and OT Ricky Wagner (knee) were unable to practice all week and have been ruled out for Week 15 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. DT John Atkins (illness) and RB Bo Scarbrough (ribs) did not practice Friday, Dec. 13, and are listed as questionable. LB Christian Jones (shoulder) was limited in practice all week and is also listed as questionable. DT Damon Harrison (calf, knee, shoulder, rest) was limited in practice Friday but has been removed from the injury report. CB Jamal Agnew (ankle), DE Austin Bryant (hip), P Sam Martin (abdomen) and CB Rashaan Melvin (ribs) practiced in full Friday and also no longer appear on the injury report.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (back, hip) did not participate in practice Thursday, Dec. 12.

Fantasy Spin: Stafford likely will not play in the Week 15 game and could miss the rest of the 2019 season. David Blough will be the starting quarterback again this week and should be avoided in all leagues.
