2020 RTSports Outlook

Winston had an inconsistent season for the Bucs. He was suspended to start the year and didn't win the job back right away because of the great play of Ryan Fitzpatrick. He found the field in Week 4, though, before losing the job for a couple weeks in the middle of the season. He got the starting job back in Week 12 and kept the job the rest of the year. He had 20 total touchdowns in 11 games but also had 14 interceptions. The mistakes marred an otherwise good season for Winston. He has double-digit interceptions each of his four seasons in the NFL. Winston has 4,000-yard passing seasons two of four and at least 28 total touchdowns in each of his full seasons in the NFL. New head coach Bruce Arians could be just the thing to get Winston going. He has a history with Arians, who should be a good fit for Winston. Winston has a great arm and can make all the throws. He is a pretty accurate quarterback. Winston is a good athlete but more of a pocket passer than scrambler. He will make plays with his legs when needed.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Winston can be a legit No. 1 for fantasy teams in the offense. He gets a lot of chances each game and is always capable of the big game. This could be his best season to date, making him a guy to consider for you to use as a low-end No. 1 but get a good backup for him for insurance. Look for him to get 4,000-passing yards with 30-plus scores and 15 interceptions.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end O.J. Howard is set to begin the season as Jameis Winston's top tight end after not playing in the team's fourth preseason game. Howard is projected to improve on his sophomore season after putting up 565 yards and five touchdowns in only 10 games. The Buccaneers expect to be in a lot of shootouts this season in part due to a porous defensive unit. With 179 targets being vacated by the losses of Adam Humphries and DeSean Jackson, Howard will have every opportunity to become an elite tight end in 2019.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady was charged with 116 'bad throws' in 2019, six fewer than league leader Jameis Winston - his predecessor in Tampa Bay.

From TheHuddle

Mar 24 10:43pm ET

Free-agent QB Jameis Winston (Buccaneers) threw for 19 touchdowns versus only one interception inside the 20 and posted a 15:1 TD-to-INT ratio inside the 10 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season.

Mar 23 2:33pm ET

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton and free-agent QB Jameis Winston (Buccaneers) are not expected to receive interest from the Washington Redskins this offseason, according to sources.

Fantasy Spin: Dwayne Haskins is expected to be the starter for the Redskins this upcoming season, but he needs to improve his play after struggling at times in 2019. Haskins probably should be a No. 2 quarterback in fantasy leagues.

Free-agent QB Jameis Winston (Buccaneers) on Saturday, March 21, posted a farewell tweet to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the city of Tampa. 'It's been a great 5 seasons as a Buccaneer. All love and respect, I love Tampa and I look forward to seeing y'all again in February,' Winston wrote on Twitter.

Fantasy Spin: Winston's five-year run with the Bucs produced 131 total touchdowns but also 111 total turnovers, including 88 interceptions. It remains to be seen where Winston lands, and the viable starting opportunities are starting to dry up.

The New England Patriots are "unlikely" to target free-agent quarterback Jameis Winston as the replacement for Tom Brady, according to a high-ranking Patriots official. Winston led the league in passing yards and touchdowns, but he also threw for a league-high 30 interceptions, becoming the first quarterback to have 30 touchdowns and 30 picks in the same season. In contrast, Brady has thrown 29 interceptions in the last four seasons combined and has never thrown more than 14 picks in a single season. Because of Winston's turnover-prone ways, head coach Bill Belichick and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will likely pass on him, as will most of the rest of the league when they're looking for a starter under center. Winston put up fantasy relevant numbers in 2019, but it's looking like he'll have to settle for backup work in 2020.

Free-agent QB Jameis Winston (Buccaneers) is 'unlikely' to be a target of the New England Patriots, according to a high-ranking team official Friday, March 20.

Fantasy Spin: It makes sense for Patriots head coach Bill Belichick to want to avoid Winston's high-risk style of play. While Winston has been of the more productive fantasy quarterbacks in recent years, his interceptions are much more costly to real NFL teams than they are to fantasy managers. Even if he were to latch on in New England, his fantasy appeal would drop without the services of elite wide receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

From TheHuddle

Mar 19 12:40pm ET

The Washington Redskins have no chance of acquiring quarterback Jameis Winston, according to a source. Winston is out of a job now that the Buccaneers have agreed with quarterback Tom Brady, but the market has been basically non-existent for the turnover-prone gunslinger. Washington seems content to give the starting job over to Dwayne Haskins full time in 2020, and Alex Smith (leg) could be his backup if he can get back onto the field this summer. Winston, 26, led the NFL with 5,109 yards passing and 33 touchdowns, but he also led the league with his 30 interceptions and continues to put his team in bad situations with all his turnovers. It's looking like he'll have to settle for a backup gig somewhere.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston (knee) is rehabbing from an offseason knee injury. He has been showcasing his rehab process on social media, as the Buccaneers, and potentially other NFL teams, keep a close eye on the videos.

From TheHuddle

Mar 2 10:00pm ET

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston, who will be a free agent this month, is likely to leave the team in free agency. Winston led the NFL in passing yards, touchdowns and interceptions in 2019 while playing through injuries. But the Bucs are tired of his turnover-prone ways and want to dip their toes into a strong quarterback market this offseason. If Winston isn't playing in Tampa in 2020, Peter King doubts that he'll be starting for another team. As such, Winston's best hope to be a strong QB1 for fantasy owners next year is to remain in Tampa on a short-term deal. Receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin stand to be affected, but they might even be more attractive if another QB is under center in 2020.

From RotoBaller

Mar 2 11:43am ET

Tampa Bay Buccaneers impending free-agent QB Jameis Winston is unlikely to re-sign with the Buccaneers, in the opinion of MMQB's Peter King.

Fantasy Spin: King also opines that Winston isn't likely to be a starter if he leaves Tampa. That would obviously kill his fantasy value. It should be an interesting free-agent period, and Winston could be a low-end QB1 or not worth rostering.

From TheHuddle

Feb 28 11:00pm ET

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are strongly considering using the franchise tag on defensive end Shaquil Barrett if the two sides can't work out a long-term deal, according to a league source. If the Bucs use the tag on Barrett, they wouldn't be able to use one on quarterback Jameis Winston. Barrett had 14 sacks in his first four seasons with Denver before exploding for 19.5 sacks in his first year in Tampa in 2019. Was last year an outlier for the 27-year-old or will it become the norm? That's what Tampa must figure out, as well as fantasy owners in IDP leagues considering using a high pick on him for the 2020 season.

Feb 28 3:23pm ET

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston (knee) underwent surgery on a torn meniscus after the 2019 season.

Fantasy Spin: Winston could be limited during offseason workouts since he is recovering from multiple injuries but will be fine for the 2020 season. It is not known if he will return to the Bucs or will be playing with a new team. He is a risky option because of his turnovers, but he can be considered at least a high-end No. 2 quarterback in fantasy leagues.

From TheHuddle

Feb 28 3:20pm ET

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston (knee) played through a torn meniscus in his knee last season, which he recently had trimmed. Winston also played through a broken thumb in 2019 but didn't miss a single game, throwing for an NFL-high 5,109 yards and 33 touchdowns. But he also had a league-high 30 interceptions and has struggled with turnovers his entire career. The 26-year-old former first overall pick in 2015 will be a free agent next month, but there's a chance the Bucs keep him around on a short-term deal. If he stays in Tampa with Mike Evans and Chris Godwin as his top two receivers, Winston will be a high-end QB1 in 2020. You'll just have to live with the turnovers.

From RotoBaller

Feb 21 8:00pm ET

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have considered signing quarterback Jameis Winston to a two-year deal this offseason, with the first year guaranteed and the second year a team option, according to sources. The first year of the deal would be roughly the same as the franchise tag of $27 million. Tampa could also just use the franchise or transition tag, with the transition tag around $2.5 million cheaper than the franchise tag. The 26-year-old led the NFL with 5,109 passing yards and 33 touchdowns last year, but he also led the NFL with 30 interceptions. Winston's fantasy value will be the highest as a QB1 if he stays in Tampa with Mike Evans and Chris Godwin as his top two receivers.

From RotoBaller

Feb 20 12:43pm ET

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Jameis Winston, a pending free agent, could be offered a two-year deal by the Buccaneers with the first year guaranteed and the second year being a team option, according to sources. The first year would pay Winston roughly the same as a franchise tag ($27 million).

Fantasy Spin: Winston threw for a career-high 5,109 yards, 33 TDs last season -- and yes, 30 interceptions -- to finish as a top-five fantasy QB for the first time in five seasons. A return to the Bucs would definitely keep him in the QB1 conversation, but a move to another team would necessitate a full re-evaluation of his fantasy status.

From TheHuddle

Feb 15 11:00pm ET

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians said that the team remains undecided on whether to keep quarterback Jameis Winston or move on from the former first overall draft pick. Arians said they probably won't know what direction they are headed until the start of the three-day legal free-agent tampering period from March 16-18. If Tampa uses a franchise tag on Winston, he'll be guaranteed around $27 million on a one-year deal. The fact that the Buccaneers are waiting to see which quarterbacks become available doesn't really inspire much confidence that they want to retain him. Winston led the NFL with 5,109 passing yards and set a franchise record with 33 touchdown passes, but he also tossed a league-high 30 interceptions and lost five fumbles. With Mike Evans and Chris Godwin at receiver, Winston will have his highest fantasy value as a strong QB1 if he remains in Tampa, but that won't be up to him.

From RotoBaller

Feb 13 5:33pm ET

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston is expected to remain an option for the team for the 2020 season at least until the beginning of the legal three-day free-agent tampering period March 16-18, according to head coach Bruce Arians Thursday, Feb. 13. 'Really nothing has changed,' Arians said. 'What's Door No. 2? You know? Can we make the one we have better? All those things you go through right now. ... And then, that's the problem, you get about three days to decide. The legal tampering period. Is somebody going to get let go? What's the trade values? It's really monotonous right now because you don't have any answers.'

Fantasy Spin: The Buccaneers know what they have in Winston at this point but seem to be willing to entertain available options, should any truly exist. Winston led the NFL with 5,109 passing yards last season, but he also threw a league-high 30 interceptions. Ball control will likely be a big focus of the Bucs' search, but whoever is under center has QB1 potential with WRs Mike Evans and Chris Godwin as their primary targets.

From TheHuddle

Feb 12 8:50pm ET

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston (eye) recently underwent LASIK eye surgery to correct his nearsightedness. He has struggled with nearsightedness throughout his career. "He can't read the scoreboard, but he can see the guys in front of him, so he's fine," head coach Bruce Arians said at the end of the season. Winston led the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns in 2019, but he also led the league with 30 interceptions. His 19,737 passing yards are the seventh most of any quarterback in the league since 2015, but Tampa is still unsure if he's their QB of the future. Having Mike Evans and Chris Godwin as your top two receivers definitely helps, so Winston will remain a strong QB1 consideration if he remains with the Bucs.

From RotoBaller

Feb 12 5:33pm ET

Tampa Bay Buccaneers impending free-agent QB Jameis Winston (eyes) recently underwent Lasik surgery to help improve his eyesight.

Fantasy Spin: Winston finished the season with 33 touchdowns and 30 interceptions, so his status with the Bucs is uncertain at this point. He is a valuable fantasy option because of his touchdowns but the interceptions make him a risky starting option. Winston probably will be the starter for a team next season can could be a low-end No. 1 or a No. 2 quarterback in leagues.

From TheHuddle

Jan 25 1:33pm ET

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston is coming off an up-and-down season in which he hit career highs in yards (5,109) and touchdowns (33) but also interceptions (30), including seven pick-sixes, and former Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik said it's time the Bucs and Winston part ways. 'I would be surprised if they pay him,' Dominik told PewterReport.com. 'Maybe they will. It's their decision, but I would be shocked if the Bucs franchised Winston -- or transitioned him. I think the decision they have is certainly difficult because there has been some production there, but I don't know how you could justify paying Jameis Winston more money this year than he made last year.'

Fantasy Spin: Unless your league deducts heavy penalties for turnovers, Winston was fantasy gold last season, finishing only behind Lamar Jackson in total fantasy points. The interceptions and miscues, though, are a little more unforgivable in real football, and whether or not Winston is retained by the Bucs promises to be one of the most intriguing storylines of the offseason.
