San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) is reportedly 'six weeks ahead in terms of his time frame' as he continues to make his way back from the torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered one week before the opening of the 2018 regular season, according to general manager John Lynch.

Fantasy Spin: The fact McKinnon suffered his injury prior to the start of the season means he will be roughly 11 months past his surgery when training camp begins. He should come at a discount in fantasy drafts based on the simple fact he hasn't played in a year and is expected to share the backfield touches with Matt Breida, but his upside in a Kyle Shanahan offense remains immense. He could easily push for 80 to 90 catches if he can return to form and stay healthy in 2019.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (knee) and running back Jerick McKinnon (knee), who both tore their ACLs in 2018, are both doing well in their rehabs and haven't had any setbacks. McKinnon tore his ACL a week before the regular season began, while Garoppolo tore his in the fourth quarter of Week 3 against the Chiefs. General manager John Lynch said the team expects Garoppolo to be ready by the start of training camp in late July, and he might even be cleared by the beginning of organized team activities in late May. McKinnon is six weeks ahead of his original timetable and is also expected to be full go for training camp. Lynch spotted Garoppolo throwing to McKinnon just last week. Garoppolo has started just 10 games in his NFL career but has a ton of upside in head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense moving forward. He's best drafted as a QB2 with upside in 2019. McKinnon was a popular breakout candidate in 2018 but never had a chance to get off the ground. With Matt Breida emerging in 2018, it's fair to wonder how big of a role McKinnon will have next season, but he could be a sneaky upside pick in PPR leagues after missing all of 2018.

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) was recently seen catching passes from QB Jimmy Garoppolo, general manager John Lynch said Tuesday, Jan. 22, in an interview.

Fantasy Spin: A preseason knee injury shelved McKinnon for the season, but at least it happened earlier enough that McKinnon is expected to participate in training camp and be ready for the start of 2019 season. And that coupled with the Niners' strong productiveness with several different backs makes McKinnon an intriguing fantasy bounce-back candidate.

Nov 13 8:23pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RBs Jerick McKinnon (knee) and Matt Breida will likely see significant time on the field together in 2019, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Fantasy Spin: Shanahan noted during his media availability session Tuesday that he envisioned seeing the two backs in the backfield this season prior to McKinnon's ACL tear. The expectation now, as it was this summer pre-injury, is that McKinnon will serve as the Devonta Freeman to Breida's Tevin Coleman if the former doesn't encounter any setbacks in his recovery. Both backs figure to be RB2 candidates for fantasy purposes in 2019.

Oct 26 9:53pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) no longer needs to use crutches as he continues to recover from knee surgery.

Fantasy Spin: McKinnon still won't be on the field until next season, but his recovery appears to be going as planned so far. Keep him stashed away in dynasty formats.

Sep 14 1:03pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) underwent right knee surgery to repair a torn ACL on Tuesday, Sept. 11.

Fantasy Spin: McKinnon was informed the tear was "clean," which is the best news he could have received given the fact he suffered a season-ending injury. Because the tear was clean and no other ligaments were damaged, he should be ready to participate in offseason activities and certainly be cleared for training camp if he does not encounter a setback.

Sep 14 12:30pm ET

San Francisco 49ers running back Jerick McKinnon (knee) underwent ACL surgery on Tuesday and the tear was "pretty clean," according to a source. McKinnon is still out for the year, but this is a great sign that his recovery should go smoothly. He should be ready for the 2019 in plenty of time. McKinnon was hyped up heading into his first season with the Niners and was a popular early-round fantasy selection, so it was even more devastating when he blew out his knee in training camp. McKinnon could wind up being somewhat of a value pick heading into next year.

Sep 3 2:13pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Monday, Sept. 3.

Fantasy Spin: The 49ers will move forward with Alfred Morris as the early-down back and Matt Breida as the complementary back, although picking the best fantasy option in this backfield could be a bit of a chore in the early going. Morris should lead the team in carries and rushing touchdowns, but Breida could easily outperform him with fewer touches because he is more explosive and better in the passing game. Both backs figure to dabble with low-end RB2/high-end RB3 value this season.

Sep 1 8:20pm ET

San Francisco 49ers running back Jerick McKinnon tore his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee during Saturday's practice. He is done for the season. With this news, look for second-year running back Matt Breida's draft stock to significantly rise. However, with fellow running back Alfred Morris projected to open the season as the team's starter, he should also be picked up, especially while Breida eases his way back after being recently cleared from a shoulder injury.

Sep 1 7:13pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) is out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, according to a source.

Fantasy Spin: Alfred Morris and Matt Breida are immediate commodities off the waiver wire if available. Morris at least should be available in the majority of leagues. He's the preferred option in standard formats, while Breida possesses more PPR upside.

Sep 1 5:33pm ET

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) is believed to have torn his anterior cruciate ligament, although the 49ers are awaiting official results from his MRI.

Sep 1 4:50pm ET

San Francisco 49ers running back Jerick McKinnon went down with what appeared to be a non-contact knee injury in practice on Saturday. He went down awkwardly on the final play of practice making a cut with no one around him. According to reports, the team is "extremely concerned" about the injury and will send him for an MRI. Nothing is for sure yet, but this sure sounds like it could be an ACL tear or something similar. Fantasy owners drafting over the weekend will want to avoid McKinnon and move both Alfred Morris and Matt Breida up on their draft boards.
