2019 RTSports Outlook

Edmonds served as the top backup to David Johnson much of his rookie year but wasn't too impressive in that role. He averaged just 3.5 yards per carry and 5.2 yards per reception. He didn't make many plays when given the chance. The Cardinals won't just hand him the backup job this year, especially with a new coaching staff in place. He will have to earn that top backup job. Edmonds is a small back with good moves. He runs hard and can get to the next level in a hurry. He has good strength between the tackles. Edmonds does lack some moves in space, though, and struggled after contact last year.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Edmonds didn't do much last season and could have a hard time getting as much work. He is not draft material right now. He could get around 15 receptions and 300 total yards.

RotoBaller's Outlook

In 16 games in 2018 as a rookie,Chase Edmonds had very little production, carrying the ball just 60 times for 208 yards and two touchdowns. With Kliff Kingsbury in and Steve Wilkes mercifully gone the role of bell cow back will firmly belong to David Johnson again. If he gets injured, then there is a chance Edmonds has value. But more then likely if this were to happen the Cardinals would sign a veteran to at least split time.59 and 207 pounds is not a size which is conducive to handling the full punishment of an NFL season, and when this is a backup and not the main guy it is even more unlikely the player will bring any fantasy production. If you are one to pick up your starters handcuffs there are a few things I want to know. Why? You should never draft with injury in mind. It keeps you from getting better players with more potential. If you are in the playoff race near the end of the season, then this is the time to get the handcuffs. But not before. The other question to ask is how do you determine the backup in the preseason? Remember how Niles Davis was the backup to Jamal Charles in Kansas City? Well, until an injury actually happened. Then he wasnt. Often we do not truly know the backup situation, so this early in the season it is bad to even try to draft based on this scenario. With Kyler Murray, Hakeem Butler and Andy Isabella coming in, to add toLarry Fitzgerald and Christian Kirk the offense looks to be a lot better in 2019. With Kingsburys air raid offense, the 65-plays per game from last year will likely go up massively. Both of these things are wonderful for the players who will actually see time. This is not Edmonds and he should therefore not be drafted.

Arizona Cardinals RB Chase Edmonds will have a 'really nice role in the offense' this season, according to head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

Fantasy Spin: Kingsbury has also said he plans to use David Johnson as the feature back, so Edmonds isn't likely to have a big enough role to be more than a handcuff for fantasy owners in redraft leagues. That being said, he is an intriguing stash candidate in dynasty formats.

Arizona Cardinals running back Chase Edmonds is making adjustments on the field and trying to put himself in better shape for a larger role in 2019. "I come on that field every day a lot more confident in my abilities," Edmonds said. "Last year was kind of walking on eggshells, and my mentality was more like to not mess up, as opposed to just make big plays." He played the spread offense in college, and is excited by head coach Kliff Kingsbury's new scheme, too. David Johnson will be the bellcow in Arizona, as long as he is healthy, but Edmonds is a player to watch in deeper fantasy leagues, particularly in PPR formats.

Arizona Cardinals RB Chase Edmonds expressed confidence Wednesday, June 17 that he will have a regular role in the offseason despite the fact RB David Johnson will be leaned upon heavily as the bellcow back. 'Me and (Dave) are definitely pushing for (two-back looks),' Edmonds said. 'It opens up his dynamic ability and mine as well. Whether it's two-back sets or Dave in the slot, me in the slot, it doesn't really matter.'

Fantasy Spin: Edmonds might be confident that he'll have a decent role, but head coach Kliff Kingsbury has made it clear he intends on riding Johnson hard this season. That's great for his fantasy value, but Edmonds might only see crumbs. His fantasy appeal is much, much less.
