2019 RTSports Outlook

Brees rebounded last year but still wasn't quite his hold self, seeing the Saints give the running game more and more work. Brees was eighth overall in fantasy quarterback scoring, but failed to reach 4,000-passing yards for the first time since joining the Saints. He did a great job of finding the end zone, though, scoring 36 total touchdowns. And Brees was great in protecting the football, throwing a career-low five interceptions. Brees had six 300-yard games and seven three-touchdown games. Brees is 40 years old but keeps himself in great shape and knows the offense inside and out. He should continue to do well for the Saints. Brees has 10 of 11 seasons with 33 or more touchdowns. He also has 5,000 yards five of 10 seasons. Brees is extremely accurate, makes great decisions, and spreads the wealth to a host of options in the offense. The Saints should continue to have a balanced approach offensively this year with two of the top running backs in the game leading the way. This could mean more of the same for Brees this year.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Brees remains an elite fantasy option but isn't quite the option of past years. He was eighth in quarterback scoring last season and 10th the previous year. The Saints are going to run a lot, meaning lower passing yards and touchdowns from Brees than in previous seasons. Consider him more of a low-end No. 1, capable of the huge game any given week. Expect around 4,000-passing yards and 30 touchdowns from Brees.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Is 40 the new 30 for quarterbacks in the NFL? No, not so much. There are few players in history who can play at the level of Drew Brees and Tom Brady at their age. So, lets relish it and respect it while we can.At age 40 Brees is the heart and soul of the team and the city of New Orleans, and he will again prove himself as he leads the Saints to a hopeful Super Bowl run once again. In 2018 with Alvin Kamara, Mark Ingram and Michael Thomas, Brees had another Pro Bowl-caliber season with 3,992 yards and 32 touchdowns while again compiling a hefty 74.4 completion percentage.Coming into 2019, the only differences in the offense are that Trequan Smith is a year older and more experienced, and Latavius Murray replaces Ingram as a younger version of the same running back to compliment Kamara. Thomas is still going to be a target monster for Brees and could follow up his 125 receptions from 2018 with similar or better numbers this season. The main critique for Thomas is his lack of target depth, as on 125 catches he only achieved 1,405 receiving yards. While 11.2 yards per catch is solid, it is not to the level of a Mike Evans who achieves the same yardage on far fewer catches due to his much higher depth of target. If Smith and the returning Ted Ginncan provide the downfield threat then Brees is set to be even better than he was last season. This is going to be crucial as he is currently being taken just behindRussell Wilson and just in front of Carson Wentz as the QB8 in drafts. As much as I love Drew Brees, this could represent his ceiling in this pass heavy climate. He can and will still sling the ball around, and is still the cream of the crop when it comes to accuracy. The only hesitation is whether he will take this team on his back and throw for 5,000 yards and 40 touchdowns or will he defer to more runningby Kamara and Murray? There is enough doubt to provide a limited ceiling for Brees this season. One thing we do know is as fired up as he and the Saints will be this season, he will have ice in his veins when it comes to feeling any pressure. And for your fantasy team? This could mean a championship as well.

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees averaged 285 passing yards per game with 29 touchdowns and two interceptions over the first 11 games, but he averaged 234.5 yards over his final six games, including the playoffs, with seven touchdowns and five interceptions.

Fantasy Spin: While his days as a top-five fantasy quarterback are probably over, he should still remain a low-end QB1 in 2019 as the leader of Sean Payton's offense.

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees compiled a passer rating of 108.0 against man coverage in 2018 - the third-best mark in the league, according to Pro Football Focus.

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees paced all quarterbacks in 2018 with a adjusted third-down completion rate of 78.7 percent, according to Pro Football Focus.

Fantasy Spin: There is a belief that Brees' high-completion rate (league-best 74.4 percent last season) are due to more short passes, but his 8.2 and 8.1 yards-per-attempt averages over the last two seasons ranked among the league leaders and among the best marks of his career. He remains a low-end QB1 for fantasy purposes.

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees turned 40 in January, but the team is dealing with the situation on a year-to-year basis. 'I think we look at it in terms of, 'Hey, this year,' you know? And man, he had a great season last year, and we expect a great season this year,' Saints general manager Loomis said recently. 'And so for as long as he wants to play and can play, he's going to have that opportunity.' Thanks to restructured contract that pushes a $10-million-plus cap hit to 2020, Brees will count more than $21 million against the cap that season, and number will increase if Brees isn't signed to a new deal that will kick some of that hit over future seasons.

Fantasy Spin: Brees is on the Tom Brady "better-with-age" track, throwing for 3,992 yards and 32 TDs in 2018 while finishing eighth among fantasy QBs -- his 15th straight season in the top 10. And, surprise, he looks to be a low-end QB1 again this fall. If he falls to you as your starting QB later in the draft, chalk it up as a good value.

The New Orleans Saints are re-signing quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to a one-year deal worth $7.25 million fully guaranteed on Thursday, a source informed of the situation told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The deal has a maximum value of $12.5 million. Bridgewater visited with the Dolphins on Wednesday night but left without a contract, leaving the door open for him to return as Drew Brees' backup. Bridgewater started the regular season finale in 2018 and won't have any fantasy value again in 2019 unless Brees is injured.

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees restructured his contract Thursday, March 14, to free up $10.1 million in salary cap space. Brees is due $23 million in 2019, and his contract is set to void after this season, which will leave $21.3 million in dead money whether he returns or not.

From TheHuddle

Jan 23 10:33pm ET

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees is scheduled to count $33.5 million against the salary cap in 2019, which is $4 million more than any other player in the NFL. General manager Mickey Loomis said the team has options to reduce the number if they need to this offseason.

Fantasy Spin: Brees plans to play at least one more season, so the Saints could look to restructure his contract or sign him to an extension in order to drop his salary cap hit. He continues to be one of the best quarterbacks in the league despite his age and should be a No. 1 quarterback in all fantasy leagues in 2019.

From TheHuddle

Jan 21 1:23am ET

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees indicated during his post-game comments Sunday, Jan. 20, that he plans on returning for the 2019 season and 'making another run' at a Super Bowl with the Saints.

Fantasy Spin: Despite sitting out the season finale, Brees delivered top-10 fantasy production at the position, passing for 3,992 yards and 32 TDs. He turned 40 earlier this month, but, like Tom Brady, he doesn't take a lot of punishment and also benefits from working under the offensive wizardry of Sean Payton. That makes Brees a safe top-10 fantasy QB for next season.

From TheHuddle

Jan 20 7:53pm ET

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees completed 26-of-40 passes for 249 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the NFC Championship Game loss against the Los Angeles Rams.

Fantasy Spin: It's a tough pill to swallow, as the future Hall of Famer just missed out on a Super Bowl trip for the second straight season in excruciating fashion on the final play of the game. Brees threw for 3,992 yards, 32 touchdowns and five interceptions in the regular season, proving he has more than enough left in the tank for his fantasy owners heading into 2019 despite his age (40).
