2024 RTSports Outlook

Lock was dealt to the Seahawks before last season and was brought in to compete for the starter's job with Geno Smith. Lock was unable to win the job and watched Smith have a breakout season. Lock did not in a game all last season for the first time in his career. He is likely stuck as a backup for the coming year. Lock has a huge arm and can make all the throws. He also is a little cocky, having a lot of confidence at the position. Lock will make some plays with his legs, using his athletic ability. He will miss some easy throws and can struggle with mechanics at times because of his great arm, trusting his arm strength more so than having proper technique. He also is indecisive in the pocket. Lock has not progressed as expected and might have a hard time finding another starting job in the NFL.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Lock is trending the wrong way. He has some potential in a starting role, but until he starts producing consistently on the field, don't bother.

Despite a report on Thursday evening that Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider said the New York Giants convinced him that quarterback Drew Lock would compete for a starting role with the G-Men in 2024, the Giants did not tell Lock that he would be competing for the starting gig with Daniel Jones in order to sign him. Lock signed a one-year, $5 million deal with New York on Tuesday to fill the traditional role of a backup behind Jones, according to a source familiar with the negotiations. Schneider said Seattle wanted to re-sign Lock, but he opted not to return to the Seahawks. Jones is coming off a torn ACL and is running out of chances to prove himself as the QB of the future for the Giants, but there is no QB controversy between him and Lock to open the season.

Mar 15 12:30am ET

Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider said on a Seattle radio show on Thursday that he wanted to keep quarterback Drew Lock around, but the New York Giants "basically sold him on the opportunity to compete to be the starter." Schneider said that Lock views the situation with the Giants as possibly being similar to Baker Mayfield in Tampa last year. Lock might think he has a better shot of unseating Daniel Jones in New York for the starting gig under center than in Seattle for Geno Smith, but there's no way of knowing exactly what the G-Men are thinking. Most likely, the Giants are giving themselves more insurance at QB for Jones, who is coming off a torn ACL in 2023. Despite the addition of Lock in free agency, the Giants remain a candidate to trade up in the first round to take a signal-caller of the future. Lock could make starts for the Giants in 2024 if Jones struggles or gets hurt again, but at best, he'd be a low-end QB2 in superflex leagues.

Dynasty | The Giants have signed quarterback Drew Lock. Dynasty Analysis: Lock will presumably back up Daniel Jones unless the Giants address the position further in the upcoming NFL Draft. He's been solid in stretches throughout his time in Denver and Seattle but hardly looks capable of taking the keys to the franchise. Still, it's a decent landing spot for Lock as the quarterback position in the Big Apple is hardly set in stone. He's not roster worthy in dynasty leagues at the moment but should certainly be on a watch list.

Mar 12 2:20pm ET

The New York Giants are signing free-agent quarterback Drew Lock to an undisclosed deal on Tuesday. Lock will head to the Big Apple and will presumably serve as the backup to Daniel Jones (knee), who is coming off a torn ACL, in 2024 now that Tyrod Taylor is with the Jets. The former second-round pick of the Denver Broncos in 2019 out of Missouri showed some upside in his four appearances (two starts) as Geno Smith's backup for the Seattle Seahawks last year, going 48-for-76 for 543 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. Lock has been in a backup role since throwing 16 touchdowns and a league-high 15 picks in 13 starts in 2020 before being traded to Seattle before the 2022 season. At best, Lock would probably be a low-end QB2 in superflex leagues if Jones is hurt again in 2024.

Dec 19 4:50am ET

Quarterback Drew Lock was tabbed for his second consecutive start after it was determined in pregame warmups that Geno Smith (groin) was better off sitting for another week. Lock went 22-for-33 for 203 passing yards in what was an underwhelming effort until Seattle's final drive of Seattle's eventual 20-17 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. With just under two minutes left on the clock in the fourth quarter, Lock led the Seahawks 92 yards downfield and threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba with 28 seconds left on the clock. While it was an impressive finish, Lock looked gunshy for most of the night, sticking to short and intermediate routes and completing only three passes that went for more than eight yards before the fourth quarter. Even with the late-game heroics, the starter job is expected to go back to Smith once he is fully healed, which may be as soon as Week 16's contest against the Tennessee Titans.

Dec 18 8:10pm ET

Signs continue to point to Seattle Seahawks quarterback Drew Lock being the team's starter under center on Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles despite the fact that Geno Smith (groin) is officially active for this game. There apparently won't be official word on the starter before the kickoff, so fantasy managers that have Smith in their starting lineup would be wise to throw Lock in there now. Lock has been taking the first-team repetitions at QB during pre-game warmups. If Smith doesn't start, which is the way things appear to be headed, he'll be available in a pinch in case Lock gets injured on Monday night. If Lock gets the start, it will be his second straight after Smith was inactive for the Week 14 loss to the division-rival San Francisco 49ers.

Dec 18 8:10pm ET

Updating a previous report, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Drew Lock, not Geno Smith (groin), is expected to start on Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles. Smith came into this game as questionable after missing last week's loss to the San Francisco 49ers. He is active for this game but will cede starting duties to Lock, who is now making his second straight start. If Lock gets injured on Monday night, Smith would be forced into action at less than 100 percent. It's a downgrade for receivers DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and rookie Jaxon Smith-Njigba, but the Eagles secondary has also been a great matchup for opposing QBs and receivers, so perhaps Lock can put together a nice performance through the air in a game in which the Seahawks could have to take to the air often.

Dec 18 2:10pm ET

There is a real possibility that quarterback Drew Lock will draw a second consecutive start for the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night. Geno Smith (groin) is still feeling the effects of the groin injury that kept him out of Week 14 and will be a game time decision. Lock turned in a serviceable fantasy line of 269 yards with two touchdowns but also threw two interceptions in the 28-16 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Lock getting the start on Monday would downgrade the potential upside of receivers DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. There is still room for optimism as the Philadelphia Eagles defense allows the second-most passing touchdowns per game and has given up 299.3 passing yards per game in their last three contests. Against the Eagles' generous defense, Lock could put up mid-range QB2 numbers in Week 15.

Dec 17 11:20am ET

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith (groin) is listed as questionable to play on Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles, and there's a real chance that backup Drew Lock will make his second straight start this week, according to sources. Smith is going to be a true game-time decision on Monday night, so any fantasy managers deciding between him and another QB that plays on Sunday will probably want to play this one safe and put Smith on their bench. Lock made his first start of the year in the Week 14 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, going 22-for-31 for 269 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in what was a respectable showing against one of the league's best defenses. Lock will have a much better matchup against a shaky Philly secondary if he starts again on Monday night, although we still wouldn't recommend him as anything more than a midrange QB2, at best.

Dec 11 2:10am ET

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Drew Lock got the start against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, filling in for an injured Geno Smith (groin). Lock completed 22 of his 31 pass attempts for 269 yards and threw two touchdowns and two interceptions in the process. Overall, it was a decent fantasy performance considering he was facing the same defense that held Seattle to just 220 total yards back on Thanksgiving. Lock did a good job of keeping the Seahawks close in the first half, but his pair of interceptions in the fourth quarter interrupted the team's attempts at a comeback. It is not yet known if Smith will be ready for Seattle's next game so Lock may be tapped again for the start against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 15.

Dec 10 3:00pm ET

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith (groin) has been ruled out for Week 14 versus the San Francisco 49ers. He had been listed as questionable and was trending in the wrong direction as gameday drew nearer. Drew Lock will start in his place but lacks fantasy appeal given his previous struggles and a very tough matchup against the Niners. DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba will all see their fantasy values take a hit, too.

Dec 10 11:10am ET

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith (groin) is trending in the wrong direction for Week 14, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. He described the quarterback's injury as relatively serious and noted that Drew Lock practiced this week in preparation to start. It's unlikely that the Seahawks make an official decision on their quarterback situation until 90 minutes before kickoff. Regardless, neither Smith or Lock have much fantasy appeal given the difficult matchup.

From RotoBaller

Dec 10 12:40am ET

Backup quarterback Drew Lock may get the start for the Seattle Seahawks when they take on the San Francisco 49ers in Week 14. Geno Smith (groin) is shaping up to be a game-time decision on Sunday after injuring his groin in practice on Thursday. The Seahawks elevated Sean Mannion from the practice squad on Saturday, indicating that Smith is trending in the wrong direction and that it will be Lock under center and in need of a backup himself. Lock has made only two appearances in the regular season going a combined 4-for-12 for 66 yards and throwing one interception. Should he be Seattle's signal-caller against the 49ers, he should be avoided in fantasy. Furthermore, DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba owners should expect those receivers to take a step back in production.
