The Philadelphia Eagles concluded pre-draft visits with Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold and Iowa cornerback Cooper DeJean this week. Philly is clearly interested in adding defensive back talent to its defense after allowing 252.7 passing yards per game last year (second-worst). The organization holds the No. 22 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, which is right in the range where Arnold and DeJean could be selected. Arnold, a 2023 first-team All-American, racked up 20 pass deflections and six interceptions over the last two seasons. DeJean totaled 13 pass deflections and seven interceptions in his final two collegiate campaigns, and he averaged 13.1 yards per punt return. Both players are considered top cornerback prospects in this cycle, so Philadelphia would make a great landing spot for either one as James Bradberry (30 years old) and Darius Slay (33 years old) have likely seen their best days in the NFL.

Philadelphia Eagles CB Avonte Maddox should be the team's starting nickel cornerback again, but he is expected to face competition from Tyler Hall as well as Isaiah Rodgers - if and when the latter is reinstated by the league - according to Adam Caplan of Inside the Birds.

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Eagles CB Avonte Maddox's one-year deal is worth a base value of $2 million.

From TheHuddle

Apr 4 2:30pm ET

The Philadelphia Eagles and free-agent cornerback Avonte Maddox agreed to an undisclosed one-year deal on Thursday, according to a source. Maddox will now return to the Eagles for his seventh season in 2024 after the team originally drafted him in 2018 in the fourth round (125th overall) out of Pittsburgh. The 28-year-old veteran played in only four games for the Eagles in 2023 due to a torn pectoral muscle, and he's played a total of 13 regular-season games in the last two seasons due to injuries. Maddox has a total of 250 tackles (191 solo), three sacks, 13 tackles for loss, eight QB hits, four interceptions, 31 passes defended, eight forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in 64 career games (38 starts). When healthy, he'll give the team a veteran presence at nickel corner.

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed safety Reed Blankenship to a one-year contract extension, according to NFL insider Mike Garafolo. The new deal pays him a fully guaranteed $3.94 million over the next two years and has an additional $1.38 million available in playing time and Pro Bowl incentives. Blankenship was undrafted out of Middle Tennessee State University in 2022, and he has exceeded expectations in Philadelphia. In career 25 games (19 starts), the 25-year-old has racked up 147 tackles (99 solo), four interceptions, and 13 passes defended. After the release of former All-Pro safety Kevin Byard, Blankenship is slated to start alongside C.J. Gardner-Johnson for the Eagles in 2024.

Former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Oren Burks signed a one-year deal worth up to $2.5 million with the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday, according to a source. Burks is a special teams standout who played in 15 regular-season games (five starts) for San Fran last year, picking up a career-high 46 tackles (29 solo), a career-high one sack, his first career interception and a fumble recovery. The 28-year-old former third-round pick by the Green Bay Packers in 2018 out of Vanderbilt was mostly a special teams player in his previous five seasons in the NFL, but he saw an expanded defensive role in 2023 with the Niners. Don't expect Burks to play quite as much on defense as a linebacker in his new home in Philadelphia in 2024.

The Philadelphia Eagles agreed to terms with pass-rusher Josh Sweat on a restructured contract on Friday to keep him in Philadelphia, according to sources. Sweat was drawing interest from other teams for what likely would have been a pay increase, but he'll instead stay with the team in 2024. With the restructure, the 26-year-old has a chance to make $13 million this season with $10 million guaranteed. The former fourth-round pick of the Eagles in 2018 out of Florida State was a Pro Bowler for the first time in his career in 2021, but his production dipped slightly last season. In 17 regular-season starts, he had 43 tackles (30 solo), 6.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss, 23 QB hits and two forced fumbles a year after recording a career-high 11 sacks in 16 starts. Sweat won't be on the IDP fantasy radar in most leagues in 2024.

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed linebacker Devin White to a one-year deal on Thursday. The former first-round pick will receive a prove-it deal worth $7.5 million for the upcoming 2024 season. White hasn't been able to live up to the hype of being taken 5th overall during the 2019 draft. He had good moments during his five seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The biggest problem for White has been stopping the running game as he continues to be a liability there. The good news is, the Eagles brought in defensive mastermind Vic Fangio this offseason. If anyone is going to be able to fix White, it's going to be Fangio.

New York Jets free-agent defensive end Bryce Huff is signing a three-year, $51.1 million deal with the Philadelphia Eagles once free agency officially opens on Wednesday, according to sources. The deal will make Huff the highest-paid, non-quarterback undrafted free agent in NFL history, according to sources. The 25-year-old pass-rusher is getting paid after setting career-highs in combined tackles (29) and sacks (10). In his first three seasons in the NFL with the Jets, Huff had managed only 7.5 sacks, making it fair to wonder if his 2023 campaign was an outlier. Either way, Huff will surely help an Eagles pass rush that ranked 20th in the league last season with just 43 QB takedowns.

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Zaire Franklin is signing a three-year $31.26 million contract extension with the organization, keeping him with the team long-term. Franklin's 107 solo tackles and 179 total tackles ranked second in the NFL last year, only behind Bobby Wagner. He became a star of the team's defense after the release of former All-Pro Shaquille Leonard, so the Colts prioritized keeping him in Indianapolis. Franklin is one of the most active off-ball linebackers in the NFL, making him one of the top IDP players in fantasy football.

Philadelphia Eagles DT Fletcher Cox announced his retirement from the NFL on Sunday, March 10.

From TheHuddle

Mar 10 1:50pm ET

Longtime Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Fletcher Cox is retiring from the NFL, according to an Instagram post by the 2012 first-round pick. Cox spent his entire 12-year career with the Eagles and never played in fewer than 14 games in a season. He was named to six Pro Bowls and four All-Pro teams during his stellar career. Overall, the 33-year-old tallied 519 tackles, 70 sacks, 16 forced fumbles, 17 passes defended, and 51.5 run stuffs in 188 games. Cox played the most snaps of any Eagles' interior defensive lineman in 2023 (684), so his retirement leaves a big hole to fill moving forward.

Philadelphia Eagles CB Avonte Maddox was officially released Thursday, March 7.

From TheHuddle

Mar 6 5:00pm ET

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Avonte Maddox is being released by the Philadelphia Eagles, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The move will save the organization $1.95 million on the cap. The 27-year-old was a fourth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and has played his entire six-year career in an Eagles uniform. Over 65 games, Maddox has collected 250 tackles, eight forced fumbles, four interceptions, and 31 passes defended. He'll now head to free agency, where he'll likely have a market as a depth defensive back.

From RotoBaller

Mar 5 10:50pm ET

The Philadelphia Eagles defense allowed the fifth-most explosive plays last year due to the instability of their secondary. Cornerback James Bradberry was burned frequently in critical man-to-man situations. Even if the 30-year-old is able to rebound in 2024, the Eagles need to consider the age of No. 1 corner Darius Slay (32 years old), who missed five games in 2023 with a knee injury. The Athletic's Brooks Kubena writes that general manager Howie Roseman needs to find a reliable and durable heir at cornerback, possibly on both sides of the field, through either free agency or the NFL draft this offseason. If the Eagles want to have another shot at returning to the Super Bowl, their defense under new coordinator Vic Fangio is going to need to improve over last season.
