2024 RTSports Outlook

Edwards returned from his torn ACL last year and took some time to get up to speed, but played well in a reserve role once on the field. He played nine games, averaging 5.0 yards per carry. He had 433 total yards and three touchdowns. Edwards had two games with double-digit fantasy points. He did nothing in the passing game, though, going without a catch on two targets. Edwards is a valuable backup. He serves the role very well. Edwards had three straight seasons with 700-plus rushing yards to start his career. Edwards is a big back that does his best work between the tackles. He runs with power and does good at getting downhill in a hurry. He lacks a little top-end speed, though, and is not a factor in the passing game.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Edwards is not the most exciting fantasy option because of a lack of work in the passing game. He will get some yards, though, and find the end zone on occasion. Take him as a deep reserve. Edwards will get around 600 or 700 total yards and a few scores.

New Los Angeles Chargers running back Gus Edwards will have a big role in the offense in his first year with the team, according to The Athletic's Daniel Popper. Head coach Jim Harbaugh, general manager Joe Hortiz and offensive coordinator Greg Roman have all stated their goal of building a reliable running game to help quarterback Justin Herbert. Edwards brings the Bolts a downhill running style, physicality and proven production in Roman's scheme with the Baltimore Ravens. However, it feels like LA will add at least one more piece at RB this offseason, either in free agency or the upcoming NFL draft. The 28-year-old had 13 rushing touchdowns and 810 rushing yards on a career-high 198 attempts in 2023 in Baltimore, but he also had a career-low 4.1 yards per carry and is certainly going to regress in the TD department in his first year with the Chargers.

Dynasty | The Chargers have agreed to terms with running back Gus Edwards. Dynasty Analysis: The Gus Bus will now head to Southern California and from one Harbaugh to another. Edwards will certainly be paired with more talent at the position but should be a solid short yardage and change of pace back at the very least. While not really made to be a long-term starter, Edwards should provide stability and be a decent source of yards. While his 13 touchdowns from last season can't be relied on, Edwards has always found a way to provide fantasy value. He comes in as our RB52 and that should move up a touch with this signing.

Veteran running back Gus Edwards is expected to join the Los Angeles Chargers on a two-year deal, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 28-year-old has rushed 699 times for 3,395 yards and 26 touchdowns since entering the league in 2018 with the Baltimore Ravens. Last year, he set career highs in attempts (198), rushing yards (810), and rushing touchdowns (13). He'll now be coached by another Harbaugh in Los Angeles, where Austin Ekeler is no longer on the roster as of Monday. The team could add another running back via free agency or the 2024 NFL Draft, but there's a chance Edwards will at least operate as the primary goal-line back in Justin Herbert's offense.

The Indianapolis Star's Nate Atkins suggests that the Indianapolis Colts could target Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent running back Gus Edwards on the open market this offseason as insurance to lead back Jonathan Taylor. The Colts could re-sign Zack Moss, but he's going to look for a starting role after a breakout contract year in 2023. Edwards had a career-high 13 rushing touchdowns last season and is a bruising back that would help spell Taylor in the backfield. Edwards has also averaged 4.9 yards per carry in his career and could pair well with rushing quarterback Anthony Richardson. At 29 years old, he could prefer a more specialized role in order to prolong his career. In addition to Edwards, Atkins suggests receiver Josh Reynolds and veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor as other offensive free agents the Colts could look at this offseason.

Baltimore Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said that door has not been closed on free-agent running backs Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins (Achilles) returning in 2024. Edwards led Baltimore's backs in 2023 with a career-high 810 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns and has spent his entire five-year career with the team. Right now, the team has just two RBs under contract who played last year -- Justice Hill and Keaton Mitchell, who is recovering from a season-ending torn ACL. But with a deep free-agent class at the position that includes Derrick Henry, Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs, Austin Ekeler and Tony Pollard, it remains to be seen if Edwards or Dobbins will return. Edwards set a new career-high with his 13 TDs in 2023, but he also had a career-low 4.1 yards per carry, and his 2024 fantasy value will be clouded until we know where he'll end up in free agency.

Baltimore Ravens running back Gus Edwards was essentially invisible against the Kansas City Chiefs in their 17-10 loss. The veteran back only saw four total touches in the AFC Championship game which was his lowest total all year. His next lowest was five in a Week 9 win over the Seattle Seahawks. Edwards finished the game with 20 yards on three carries and caught his lone target for 16 yards. His fifth season in the NFL was full of ups and downs, but he finished with career highs in carries, rushing yards, touchdowns, receptions, and receiving yards. He'll likely remain to Baltimore for at least one more year, but it's unclear if he'll be as fantasy-relevant with plenty of changes to come.

Jan 27 1:30pm ET

Baltimore Ravens running back Gus Edwards has been a touchdown-dependent fantasy option all season long and the playoff matchups are no different. In their divisional game against the Houston Texans, Justice Hill received more work out of the backfield than Edwards. Hill received three more carries and caught one more pass. That gave him 38 more total yards than Edwards, and that has a good chance of happening again on Sunday against the Chiefs. Edwards will continue to receive red zone carries, but against the Texans, the Ravens scored with either Lamar Jackson on the ground or a play-action pass. One silver lining is that the Chiefs run defense is one of their weaknesses.

Jan 20 8:50pm ET

Baltimore Ravens running back Gus Edwards rushed 10 times for 40 yards in the team's 34-10 victory over the Houston Texans in the Divisional Round. Although the Ravens established an early lead in the second half and maintained control, it was teammate Justice Hill who led the backfield in touches, not Edwards. Both running backs averaged at least four yards per carry, showcasing an unstoppable rushing attack in the second half while the Texans struggled to halt them. The Ravens are set to host the AFC Championship in the next game against either the Chiefs or Bills, both of whom rank below league average in DVOA against the run. Both potential opponents limited points to running backs this year, and the evaluation of the Ravens' backfield remains challenging due to the committee approach along with a quarterback who serves as the primary threat in the rushing attack.

Jan 19 12:00am ET

Baltimore Ravens running back Gus Edwards has never instilled confidence into fantasy managers when they need to start him. There isn't really anyone in the Ravens backfield that is a surefire fantasy lineup lock, and it's been that way for a long time now. The Houston Texans sit right around the middle of the pack as they were tied for the 14th toughest defense against opposing running backs. While they've given up 12 touchdowns to running backs this year, they've allowed the sixth-fewest rushing yards and the lowest amount of yards per carry in the league. Edwards' saving grace is his red zone opportunities which seem to have shrunk toward the end of the season. So, this doesn't bode well for Edwards and makes him a touchdown-dependent option.

Jan 7 12:40am ET

Baltimore Ravens running back Gus Edwards ended up receiving the most work out of the backfield instead of getting rest day as a handful of other starters did. The veteran finished with 10 carries for 48 yards and didn't get any work in the passing game. Edwards probably would have received some extra rest if Melvin Gordon III hadn't fumbled the ball. He has now finished the regular season with 198 carries for 810 yards and 13 touchdowns while catching 12 of 13 targets for 180 yards. He seemed to be on the riskier side of fantasy starts for most of the season outside of his scoring stretch that lasted a handful of weeks.

From RotoBaller

Jan 5 5:10pm ET

Baltimore Ravens running back Gus Edwards has had a roller coaster of a season. He saw just one score in the first six weeks and then managed nine touchdowns in the five weeks following that span. He also scored three more times in the last three weeks, but since the Ravens have the top seed locked up in the AFC, he's likely to get some rest in their Week 18 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It hasn't been officially reported that he's going to miss the game, so he could still suit up and play for a little bit. He's better off left on the fantasy bench, though, because these rivalry games in the AFC North are usually grueling, smashmouth contests that take a toll on everyone.

Jan 1 2:10am ET

Baltimore Ravens running back Gus Edwards found the end zone for the 12th time this year in Week 17's 56-19 demolition of the Miami Dolphins, rushing 16 times for 68 yards and a touchdown. It was a fairly typical line by Edwards' standards, which have generally called for solid rushing efficiency with minimal involvement as a pass catcher for most of the year. Justice Hill caught five passes for 64 yards and a TD, remaining the better bet for receiving production out of the Ravens' backfield. Edwards lost a fumble in the third quarter, but it essentially served as no consequence on a day where Baltimore's offense was firing on all cylinders. The Ravens miss the lightning in their backfield with Keaton Mitchell (knee) done for the year, but Gus "The Bus" should continue to provide the thunder as their lead back for the postseason, assuming he sees little to no action in Week 18 against the Pittsburgh Steelers with the AFC's top seed locked up.

From RotoBaller

Dec 29 7:30pm ET

Baltimore Ravens running back Gus Edwards was expected to resume his role as the lead back after Keaton Mitchell (knee) went down, but he ended up taking a backseat to Justice Hill in Week 16. Edwards remains the go-to red zone option when it comes to the backfield which still gives him some fantasy value as a boom-or-bust option, but he doesn't consistently rack up yards on the ground. In Week 17, he'll take on the Miami Dolphins defense who ranks fifth against opposing backfields. Since Week 11, they've given up the second-fewest rushing yards per game which doesn't bode well for Edwards who already averages just 46.3 yards per game. He can be considered a boom-or-bust flex option.

Dec 26 10:20am ET

Baltimore Ravens running back Gus Edwards collected his 12th touchdown of the season in the team's big win against the San Francisco 49ers on Christmas. He wasn't able to find much space to collect many yards, but he continues to see plenty of the red zone work in the backfield. Edwards ended the game with nine carries for 31 yards and a touchdown while catching his only target for 39 yards. In this game, he took a backseat to Justice Hill who has usually seen more of the work in the passing game. The split in this backfield will be something that changes week-to-week and they'll take on the Miami Dolphins in Week 17 who is another top-five defense against the run.

From RotoBaller

Dec 24 9:40am ET

Baltimore Ravens running back Gus Edwards is back as the clear leader of the backfield now that Keaton Mitchell (knee) is done for the season. On the other side of the field, the San Francisco 49ers rank 12th against opposing backfields, allowing 18.9 fantasy points per game. They've also allowed the seventh-fewest rushing yards per game since Week 10. Edwards, on the other hand, ranks 23rd in explosive run rate at 4.3% and he sees 60.7% of the team's rushing attempts inside the five. So, with Edwards being around the middle of the pack against a tougher defense, his value hovers around a RB3/flex option for fantasy managers that need to depend on him in the playoffs.

From RotoBaller

Dec 18 9:20am ET

Baltimore Ravens running back Gus Edwards took the lead back role once again after Keaton Mitchell (knee) exited the game with an apparent knee injury. He benefitted greatly by seeing 16 carries for 58 yards and a touchdown while catching his lone target for 11 yards. Head coach John Harbaugh said that they expect Mitchell to be out for the rest of the season, so Edwards' fantasy value shot right back up. Even though the passing game has improved, Edwards and the backfield have been the top unit in the league. He'll take on a San Francisco 49ers team in Week 16 that is in the top five against the run, so it could be an uphill battle despite receiving more opportunities.

From RotoBaller

Dec 16 5:40pm ET

Baltimore Ravens running back Gus Edwards is now down to a desperation play as Keaton Mitchell has emerged as one of their top backs. The veteran back had a magical run of five games where he scored in every single one of them. Since Week 11, however, he hasn't found the end zone and he's only mustered up around six total fantasy points. He still gets a handful of red zone opportunities, but the Ravens have also found success passing the ball and giving it to Mitchell around the edge. The Jaguars are in the middle of the pack against the run as well, so Edwards would better be left on the bench unless desperately needed as a flex.

From RotoBaller

Dec 11 12:20pm ET

Baltimore Ravens running back Gus Edwards was barely involved in the team's 37-31 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Rams in Week 14 on Sunday. Edwards played just 28 percent of the offensive snaps -- fewer than rookie Keaton Mitchell and Justice Hill -- and was afforded just six carries for a season-low 15 yards. Meanwhile, Mitchell led the backfield with nine carries for 54 yards and also caught one of his two targets. Edwards has had plenty of fantasy value for managers in 2023 with his 10 rushing touchdowns as a goal-line back, but Mitchell is slowly taking over Baltimore's backfield as their early down back. The 28-year-old is quickly becoming a touchdown-dependent RB3/flex as we enter the fantasy playoffs in most leagues.

From RotoBaller

Dec 9 11:20am ET

Baltimore Ravens running back Gus Edwards has become a touchdown-dependent fantasy player now that Keaton Mitchell has seen more and more action in the backfield. In their last game against the Chargers in Week 12, Edwards only played 27% of the snaps which amounted to eight carries for 26 yards and one catch for 11 yards. He still receives most of the red zone work, but the Rams are seventh in the league against opposing backfields. They only give up 18.2 fantasy points per game and that would be split between the entire backfield committee. Edwards is a risky flex play this week with a bit of upside given he finds the end zone.

From RotoBaller

Nov 25 10:30am ET

Baltimore Ravens running back Gus Edwards is on a five-game scoring streak in which he's found the end zone a crazy nine times. In Week 12, Edwards draws a matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers which is one of the most favorable for opposing running backs. They've only registered three games where they allowed less than 20 fantasy points to the backfield. Edwards, on the other hand, is third in total touchdowns and 16th in red zone touches. He can be considered an RB2 heading into this contest.
