The Chicago Bears agreed to terms with free-agent defensive back Jonathan Owens on Tuesday on an undisclosed two-year deal, according to his agent. Owens had 84 tackles (58 solo) in his lone season in Green Bay in 17 games (11 starts) last year and also recovered a fumble and ran it back for a touchdown. The 28-year-old spent the previous four seasons of his career with the Houston Texans from 2019-22 after they picked him up as an undrafted free agent from Missouri Western State. In his five NFL campaigns, Owens has a total of 227 tackles (152 solo), two sacks, one interception, eight passes defended, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries (one returned for a touchdown) in 48 games (30 starts). He figures to be the Bears' third safety behind Jaquan Brisker and Kevin Byard.

The Chicago Bears signed safety Kevin Byard to a two-year deal on Sunday. Byard, a former All-Pro safety with the Tennessee Titans, was cut by the Philadelphia Eagles last week. The 30-year-old didn't have to wait very long to find a new team as the Bears will bolster their up-and-coming defense. Byard will help to replace Eddie Jackson, who the team released back in February. Byard logged 122 total tackles and an interception across 16 games in 2023.

The Chicago Bears are placing their franchise tag on star cornerback Jaylon Johnson on Tuesday. General manager Ryan Poles said at last week's NFL scouting combine that they are in the process of getting a long-term deal done with Johnson, but if the two sides can't agree on something by the deadline in mid-July, Johnson would play the 2024 season on the one-year, $19.8 million tag. "Conversations are going well at this time," Poles said last week. The 24-year-old former second-round pick by the Bears in 2020 out of Utah was selected to his first Pro Bowl in 2023 after recording 36 tackles (31 solo), a career-high four interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), 10 passes defensed and a forced fumble in 14 starts.

The Chicago Bears are dedicated to bringing back impending free-agent cornerback Jaylon Johnson, which might require the franchise tag. The Bears will also likely look to upgrade their defensive line this offseason, including adding an additional pass-rusher to complement Montez Sweat. Johnson, 24, was the team's second-round pick in 2020 out of Utah and was a big reason why Chicago's secondary was one of the better units in the league in 2023. He had a career year as a first-time Pro Bowler and finished with 36 tackles (31 solo), a career-high four interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), 10 passes defensed and a forced fumble in 14 starts in his fourth year in the NFL.

Most people will be watching to see what the Chicago Bears do at quarterback this offseason, but The Athletic's Kevin Fishbain thinks the team also needs to add pass-rush help opposite Montez Sweat. Sweat made the Pro Bowl in 2023 and was an instant impact player for the Bears after they acquired him from the Washington Commanders, as he helped to lift their defense in the second half of the season. However, none of the Bears' other defensive linemen had more than four sacks and they still ranked last in the NFL in sacks per pass. DeMarcus Walker came on strong down the stretch, but Chicago would be better off if he was the team's third-best pass-rusher in 2024, which would keep opposing offenses from double-teaming Sweat.

The Chicago Bears announced on Thursday that they released safety Eddie Jackson and center Cody Whitehair. Jackson, a two-time Pro Bowler with the Bears in 2018 and 2019, had a career-low 37 tackles (32 solo), one interception and five passes defensed in 12 starts in his seventh season in the Windy City in 2023. The 30-year-old defensive back will now look for work outside of Chicago in 2024 for the first time in his career after being drafted in the fourth round in 2017 out of Alabama. In his seven-year career, he's recorded 459 tackles (355 solo), two sacks, 14 tackles for loss, 15 interceptions (three returned for touchdowns), 44 passes defensed, 10 forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries (three returned for TDs). Whitehair's release will create $9 million in salary cap space in 2024.

Philadelphia Eagles SS Kevin Byard is likely to be released this offseason, in the opinion of Philly.com's Jimmy Kempski, who referred to releasing Byard as a 'no-brainer decision.' The move would save the team $13 million in cap space.

Chicago Bears star cornerback Jaylon Johnson said he'd rather sign a new contract with the Bears instead of testing the free-agent market. "I want to stay here," Johnson said. "I definitely want to get something done (here) first. But at the end of the day, if something doesn't get done, then I'm not opposed to any other options. But I would love to stay here. So that's that." It comes after he requested a trade before the Oct. 31 deadline. He's in the middle of a strong year, recording four interceptions after having just one in his first 43 career appearances. General manager Ryan Poles said at the time near the trade deadline that he thought the two sides were close to a contract extension after an Oct. 29 meeting. The 24-year-old former second-rounder in 2020 out of Utah also has 31 tackles (26 solo) in addition to his career-high four picks in 2023.
