The Pittsburgh Steelers did a simple restructure of the salary of pass-rusher Alex Highsmith's contract on Wednesday to create more than $7 million in salary cap space, according to a source. The Steelers will convert a portion of Highsmith's base salary in 2024 into a signing bonus. The 26-year-old former third-round pick in 2020 out of Charlotte has put up 21.5 sacks in the last two years and had 57 tackles (34 solo), seven sacks, eight tackles for loss, 18 QB hits, two interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) and two forced fumbles in 17 regular-season starts in 2023 in his fourth year in the league. Along with All-Pro pass-rusher T.J. Watt, Highsmith is a key member of the Steelers' defense moving forward.

There remains no timetable for the return of Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Cole Holcomb (knee) after he was injured in Week 9 when chasing down Tennessee Titans receiver DeAndre Hopkins when teammate Keanu Neal collided with him. "I can tell you Cole [Holcomb's] working extremely hard to get back," general manager Omar Khan said.. "I don't really have much to add on the timeline. We've discussed this, it was a major injury but he is working hard and I'm optimistic about all the effort he's going to put into getting back on the field." The 27-year-old required season-ending surgery, and many thought it might put an end to his career. However, the former fifth-round pick of the Washington Commanders in 2019 out of North Carolina is working his way back and is hoping to play in 2024 after recording 442 tackles (270 solo) and 4.5 sacks in his first five NFL seasons over 58 games (56 starts).
Updating a previous report, free-agent DE Dean Lowry (Vikings) signed a two-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Free-agent CB Patrick Peterson (Steelers) is open to playing safety in 2024 but would need advanced notice from the team signing him, he said on Thursday, March 28.
From TheHuddle
Free-agent CB Patrick Peterson (Steelers) has had preliminary discussions with several teams but is not expected to join a new club until after the 2024 NFL Draft.

Pittsburgh Steelers DE Cameron Heyward (groin) should be available for the start of training camp, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.
From TheHuddle
Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Cameron Heyward (groin) had a cleanup procedure this offseason to help fix a lingering issue with his groin and core-muscle surgery from in-season, but head coach Mike Tomlin doesn't think Heyward's recovery would linger into the training programs this offseason. "I'm not anticipating it to be a factor by the time we get to training camp," Tomlin said. The 34-year-old veteran should have missed 12 weeks last year after his initial surgery, but he powered back quicker than that. He also dealt with a knee issue that kept him from practicing fully throughout almost the entire season. The six-time Pro Bowler could bounce back in IDP fantasy leagues in 2024 if he's completely healthy. Heyward had only two sacks in 11 starts in 2023 but recorded 20.5 sacks the previous two seasons combined.

Free-agent CB Patrick Peterson (Steelers) is a player the Pittsburgh Steelers may be willing to re-sign later in the offseason, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.
From TheHuddle
The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed free-agent defensive lineman Dean Lowry, according to Ari Meirov of the 33rd Team. Lowry was a fourth-round pick by the Green Bay Packers in the 2016 NFL Draft, and he spent seven seasons with the organization before one year with the Minnesota Vikings in 2023. Overall, the 29-year-old has racked up 267 tackles, 15.5 sacks, one forced fumble, five fumble recoveries, one interception, 17 pass deflections, and 19 run stuffs through his first 120 NFL games. He played in just nine games last season before suffering a pectoral injury. Lowry is unlikely to crack the starting lineup for Pittsburgh, but he will provide depth behind Larry Ogunjobi and Cameron Heyward in Mike Tomlin's attacking defense. He is not on the fantasy IDP radar.

Free-agent safety DeShon Elliott signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday for two years and $6 million, according to a source. Elliott was initially drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2018 out of Texas and spent the first three years of his career in Baltimore. Since then, he's spent single years in Detroit and Miami. In 15 regular-season starts for the Dolphins last year, Elliott had 82 tackles (53 solo), an interception, a career-high seven passes defended and a fumble recovery. The 26-year-old has accumulated 287 tackles (202 solo), 3.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss, 11 QB hits, three interceptions, 17 passes defended, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 57 career games (50 starts) in five NFL seasons. Elliott will be competing for a starting spot in Pittsburgh's secondary.

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers WR Diontae Johnson was officially traded to the Carolina Panthers Wednesday, March 13, in exchange for CB Donte Jackson and a 2024 sixth-round draft choice. The Panthers will also receive a 2024 seventh-round draft choice in the trade.

Free-agent S Miles Killebrew (Steelers) agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers Wednesday, March 13, worth $6.5 million, according to a source.
From TheHuddle
The Carolina Panthers are signing free-agent cornerback Dane Jackson to a two-year deal worth up to $14.5 million, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero. The former seventh-round pick has spent his entire four-year career with the Buffalo Bills, totaling 152 tackles, three interceptions, and 28 passes defended in 52 games (28 starts). The contract suggests Jackson will begin training camp as a starter, especially after the Panthers agreed to trade Donte Jackson and a late-round draft pick to the Steelers in exchange for Diontae Johnson and a late-round draft pick.
From RotoBaller
Pittsburgh Steelers WR Diontae Johnson was traded to the Carolina Panthers Tuesday, March 12, in exchange for CB Donte Jackson and the 178th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, according to sources. The Panthers will also receive the 240th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Fantasy Spin: George Pickens will be the main receiver for the Steelers moving forward, and the team likely will add a few more receivers in free agency and the draft. Pickens can be a No. 2 or No. 3 receiver in most fantasy leagues.
From TheHuddle
Baltimore Ravens free-agent linebacker Patrick Queen plans to sign a three-year, $41 million deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to a source. This is a big hit to Baltimore's linebacking corps and a big addition for one of their biggest division rivals after the Ravens declined his fifth-year option. The 24-year-old Queen, the 28th overall pick in 2020 out of LSU, had a career-high 133 tackles (84 solo), 3.5 sacks, nine tackles for loss, six QB hits, one interception, six passes defensed, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 17 regular-season starts in his first Pro Bowl campaign in 2023. That production was good enough to make him a top-15 fantasy linebacker in IDP leagues, and he could just be getting started while joining forces with All-Pro pass-rusher T.J. Watt.
From RotoBaller
Veteran cornerback Patrick Peterson is being released by the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The eight-time Pro Bowler spent one season in the Steel City, racking up 42 tackles, 11 passes defended, and two interceptions. Overall, he has 36 interceptions in 201 NFL games. Although he's beyond his prime and hasn't made a Pro Bowl since 2018, there could be a few teams interested in bringing him in as a veteran depth corner on a cheap deal. The 2011 first-round pick can likely continue his career if he chooses to do so.
