2024 RTSports Outlook

Heinicke started nine games for the Commanders last year and was 5-3-1 in those starts. He played pretty well, having 13 total touchdowns to six interceptions. He had two games with 20-plus fantasy points. Heinicke was a little inconsistent, completing 62.2 percent of his passes. Heinicke had some accuracy issues, having the 10th worst bad throw percentage in football (18.1 percent). Heinicke has played pretty well in a starting role, but likely moves to a backup role this year with the Falcons. Heinicke is a top athlete for the quarterback position. He has a strong arm and can make plays with his legs. He forces some passes, though, and needs to do a better job of reading defenses.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Heinicke has some big-game potential because of his passing and running ability, so he could be worth a look if he gets another chance to start this year.

The Atlanta Falcons don't plan on closing any doors while evaluating the quarterbacks for the NFL scouting combine, which started on Monday in Indianapolis. Addressing the QB position this offseason is a priority for general manager Terry Fontenot as they look for an upgrade over Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke. The Falcons currently hold the eighth overall pick in the upcoming draft, but if they want an elite signal-caller, they'll most likely have to trade up into the top five. Ridder didn't prove much last year and looks more like a backup than a starting-caliber QB in the NFL through his first 19 games. If the Falcons don't look to upgrade the position through the draft, they could be in the market to trade for a top QB or take a chance on one in free agency. Either way, it would be a big surprise if Ridder or Heinicke were starting under center in Week 1 this fall.

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Taylor Heinicke (ankle) is hopeful that he can play against the New Orleans Saints in Week 18, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. However, he'll be monitored during pregame warmups before the team makes an official decision on his status. The 30-year-old has struggled over the last two weeks, completing just 53 percent of his passes for 392 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. He remains off the fantasy radar for the time being.

Jan 5 1:20pm ET

The Atlanta Falcons have listed quarterback Taylor Heinicke (ankle) as questionable to play in the Week 18 regular season finale on Sunday in New Orleans against the Saints. Head coach Arthur Smith will put Heinicke through a workout prior to Sunday's game before deciding whether he'll be active. Heinicke injured his left ankle in the Week 17 loss to the Chicago Bears but was able to put in limited practices this week. If the 30-year-old doesn't feel good during pre-game workouts on Sunday, the Falcons will roll with Desmond Ridder in the regular season finale. Whoever starts under center for the Falcons will be a low-cost, low-upside DFS play at the QB position in a tough matchup on the road against the Saints defense.

Jan 4 9:30pm ET

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Taylor Heinicke (ankle) was once again a limited participant during Thursday's practice session. This now back-to-back days that Heinicke was been limited during practice. At the moment, fantasy managers should consider Heinicke as questionable for Week 18 against the New Orleans Saints. The veteran signal-caller was horrendous last week. Heinicke threw three interceptions before being pulled out of the game. Desmond Ridder didn't do any better under center, so the Falcons don't have a good option for Sunday. Regardless of who starts, neither quarterback is worth a look in DFS contests or any fantasy championships.

Jan 3 12:40pm ET

Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith said that quarterback Taylor Heinicke (ankle) will be limited in Wednesday's practice. The fact that Heinicke will be able to practice on Wednesday is a good sign that he'll be available to play in the must-win Week 18 regular season finale on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints on the road. The 30-year-old veteran went just 10-for-29 for 163 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in the Week 17 loss to the Chicago Bears, but he did help his fantasy line with a rushing score. If Heinicke is healthy enough to play this weekend, he's expected to get the starting nod over Desmond Ridder, who has already been benched twice this year. At best, Heinicke would be a low-end QB2 for fantasy managers in superflex leagues on Sunday against New Orleans.

Jan 1 2:20pm ET

Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith said that quarterback Taylor Heinicke (ankle) will do everything he can to play in the Week 18 regular season finale against the division-rival New Orleans Saints this Sunday. The team hopes to know by Friday and will prepare Desmond Ridder to start, just in case. Heinicke came down with a left-ankle injury in the Week 17 loss to the Chicago Bears and was benched late in the game after going 10-for-29 for 163 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. The 30-year-old added 46 rushing yards and a touchdown. The Falcons QB situation has been dreadful this year. The fact that they are even considering Heinicke for another start this weekend is a testament to how underwhelming Ridder has been. Whoever starts under center for Atlanta against the Saints in a must-win game will be a low-end QB2 for fantasy managers in superflex leagues.

Dec 31 8:40pm ET

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Taylor Heinicke struggled to find much success at all during Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears. The veteran quarterback completed 10-of-29 passing attempts for 163 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions in the loss. It was an awful day for Heinicke who was benched for Desmond Ridder. It wasn't any better for Ridder who almost immediately threw an interception. It's uncertain who is going to start for the Falcons next week versus the New Orleans Saints. Regardless, neither quarterback is going to be a viable streaming option in any fantasy formats.

Dec 30 5:40pm ET

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Taylor Heinicke (ankle) has been removed from the injury report ahead of the Week 17 matchup against the Chicago Bears. The veteran signal-caller was limited in practice earlier this week due to an ankle issue. However, it appears Heinicke is fine and should suit up for Sunday's game. Last week, Heinicke threw for 229 yards and a touchdown in the win. He does have a favorable matchup against Chicago's defense, but remains a bottom tier streaming option for Week 17.

Dec 28 9:20pm ET

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Taylor Heinicke (ankle) remained a limited participant during Thursday's practice session. This is now back-to-back days that Heinicke has been limited in practice. Possibly, the Falcons are just being cautious ahead of their Week 17 matchup against the Chicago Bears. If Heinicke sits, Desmond Ridder is expected to start under center this weekend. Ridder was benched ahead of last week's game after his recent rough stretch of play. He wouldn't a viable streaming option even against the shaky Bears defense.

Dec 27 9:10pm ET

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Taylor Heinicke (ankle) was limited in Wednesday's practice. Heinicke came away from last Sunday's win over the Indianapolis Colts nursing an ankle injury but his ability to practice on a limited basis is a positive sign as the Falcons gear up to face off against the Chicago Bears in Week 17. Keep an eye on Thursday and Friday's practice reports to see if Heinicke gets upgraded to "full" on either day. If he ultimately ends up not being able to play on Sunday, it would be Desmond Ridder back under center in Week 17.

From RotoBaller

Dec 24 4:30pm ET

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Taylor Heinicke was tasked with drawing the start under center for Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts. The veteran signal-caller was able to hold his own during this game. He completed 23-of-33 passing attempts for 229 yards with a touchdown in the win over the Colts. Heinicke nearly threw an interception, but it was dropped. He also fumbled the ball, but was able to recover it. Heinicke did a nice job of managing the game and helped keep the Falcons alive in the playoff picture. Fantasy managers should consider Heinicke a low-end QB2 for next week's matchup against the Chicago Bears.

From RotoBaller

Dec 21 6:50pm ET

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Taylor Heinicke was recently named the starter for the rest of the season. The veteran signal-caller will take over for Desmond Ridder for the final few games. In his lone start, Heinicke completed 21-of-38 passing attempts for 268 yards and one touchdown with one interception against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 9. This weekend, he'll get a matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. A defensive unit that has held opposing quarterbacks to 15 fantasy points or less in each of their last six games. That being said, Heinicke will be a desperation streaming option for this weekend's games.

From RotoBaller

Dec 20 12:40pm ET

Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith said the plan is for quarterback Taylor Heinicke to be the team's starting QB for the rest of the season. The Falcons benched Desmond Ridder for the second time this year after losing to the Carolina Panthers in Week 15, and they have no intentions of going back to him this season. Heinicke has been marginally better than Ridder in the limited action he's seen in 2023, going 41-for-74 (55.4%) for 498 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in three games (two starts), so fantasy managers shouldn't expect the Falcons' offense to drastically take a turn for the better to close out the year. The 30-year-old veteran will start this Sunday against the visiting Indianapolis Colts and will be no better than a low-end QB2 option in superflex formats.

Dynasty | Taylor Heinicke will start for the Falcons in week 16 Dynasty Analysis: Desmond Ridder heads back to the bench and, in the end, it doesn't matter who is under-center for the remainder of the season when considering the future of either quarterback in the dynasty format. The Falcons are certain to address the position in 2024 and both Heinicke and Ridder will become backups with experience and begin their respective tours of the NFL. Taylor Heinicke remains unranked on DLF's quarterback rankings.

Dynasty | Desmond Ridder has been benched in favor of Taylor Heinicke once again. Dynasty Analysis: Ridder's time in the sun is over yet again and there's little reason to expect either quarterback has a future in Atlanta. The Falcons are certain to address their quarterback situation via the draft or free agency, ending the would-be carrousel in 2024. Ridder, still listed as DLF's QB32, could remain in Atlanta as a backup for the remainder of his contract but he'll all but fall from the dynasty radar in short order.

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Taylor Heinicke (hamstring) is officially active for Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints. He was listed as questionable after logging three limited practices this past week. Despite suiting up, the 30-year-old was benched during the bye week and will return to the No. 2 quarterback role behind Desmond Ridder. He looked solid during his two starts, completing 54.7 percent of his passes for 323 passing yards, 54 rushing yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.

From RotoBaller

Nov 13 6:40pm ET

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Taylor Heinicke's hamstring injury is considered "low-grade," according to head coach Arthur Smith. Heinicke injured his hamstring in the fourth quarter of the Week 10 loss to the Atlanta Falcons and was replaced by Desmond Ridder to close out the game. With a bye coming in Week 11, Heinicke could have sufficient time to heal up to be ready for the Week 12 contest versus the division-rival New Orleans Saints. However, the Falcons could choose to go back to Ridder as well with Heinicke not really doing much to impress as the starter the last two weeks. Smith said the team is going to evaluate the position and will not make a decision until they return from their bye.

From RotoBaller

Nov 13 1:20pm ET

Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith said he will not make an announcement on the team's starting quarterback yet for Week 12 against the New Orleans Saints with the team heading into their bye in Week 11. Smith said both quarterbacks Taylor Heinicke (hamstring) and Desmond Ridder need improvements in certain areas, but he liked where Ridder was at after "a reset." Heinicke made his second straight start over the benched Ridder in the Week 10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals and didn't exactly impress before being ruled out in the fourth quarter due to a hamstring injury. The Falcons aren't trying to play musical chairs with their QBs, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see Ridder make the start under center coming out of the bye after Heinicke didn't exactly stake his claim to the starting role the last two weeks.

From RotoBaller

Nov 12 7:10pm ET

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Taylor Heinicke (hamstring) won't return to Sunday's matchup against the Cardinals. The signal-caller, who threw for 55 yards and a touchdown off 8-for-15 passing, suffered a hamstring injury, opening the door for Desmond Ridder to take over. With Atlanta off in Week 11, Heinicke's status will be under a microscope leading up to the Week 12 battle with the Saints. However, if he doesn't play, Desmond Ridder, who struggled as a starter, would presumably reclaim the job.

From RotoBaller

Nov 10 11:00am ET

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Taylor Heinicke made his first start of the season versus the Minnesota Vikings last week. The 30-year-old threw for 268 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the loss. It was an average performance by the veteran signal caller, but the Falcons will stick with Heinicke for at least one more week. He does have a favorable matchup versus the Arizona Cardinals in Week 10. A defense that is allowing the seventh-most fantasy points this season. Despite that, Heinicke isn't a favorable streaming option in QB1 leagues this week. He could have some 2QB/superflex value, but is off the fantasy radar in most leagues in Week 10.
