2024 RTSports Outlook

Winston started three games last season with the Saints before landing on the bench. Turnovers were the issue for Winston, having five interceptions to four touchdowns. He was a help to fantasy teams, having 20-plus fantasy points two of three games. He showed his big-game potential once again. Winston re-signed with the Saints this offseason and will be the top backup for the team, playing behind Derek Carr. Winston has plenty of potential in a starting role. He has 4,000-plus yards three of eight seasons. He also has 15 or more interceptions three seasons. Turnovers and decision making are an issue for Winston. He has a great arm and can make all the throws. Winston can struggle a little with accuracy at times, though, completing 61.3 percent of his passes for his career. Winston is a good athlete but more of a pocket passer than scrambler. He will make plays with his legs when needed.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Winston can be an elite fantasy quarterback in a starting role. He is a question mark, though, at this stage of his career. He has battled injury in recent years and done little when on the field.

Updating a previous report, the deal for Cleveland Browns QB Jameis Winston is good for $4 million guaranteed, with a $2.79 million signing bonus, a $1.21 million base, and up to $4.7 million available in incentives.

Dynasty | Jameis Winston signs a one year deal with the Cleveland Browns. Dynasty Analysis: Winston last entered a season as a team's starter in 2021, playing in seven games before tearing his ACL. Since then, he's mainly been backing up mediocre QB play, waiting for a chance at meaningful playing time. Now he signs a one year deal with the Browns to presumably back up Deshaun Watson. As we saw the last two years with Watson, there's reason for concern he may not play a full 17 games, whether due to poor play or to injury. Winston is a fine fallback plan and the Browns have plenty of offensive weaponry around him if he does get another chance. This likely doesn't move the value needle much for him, currently sitting at QB42 in our superflex dynasty rankings.

Free-agent QB Jameis Winston (Saints) agreed to a one-year, $8.7 million deal with the Cleveland Browns Tuesday, March 12. The deal is close to being finalized.

Mar 12 11:20am ET

Free-agent quarterback Jameis Winston is joining the Cleveland Browns on a one-year, $8.7 million deal, according to Bleacher Report's Jordan Schultz. Winston has spent the last four seasons with the New Orleans Saints, racking up 20 passing touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 21 games (10 starts). The former No. 1 overall pick passed for at least 20 touchdowns in three of his five seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but 88 interceptions over that span ultimately lost him his starting gig. He will likely begin the 2024 season as Deshaun Watson's (shoulder) backup, but there is a path to playing time considering Watson's struggles and injury issues since becoming a Brown in 2022. He should be rostered in deep Superflex and two-QB leagues next year.

Impending free-agent QB Jameis Winston (Saints) is receiving interest from the Cleveland Browns.

From TheHuddle

Mar 11 9:50pm ET

The Cleveland Browns are interested in free-agent quarterback Jameis Winston as a backup to starter Deshaun Watson. Although it's unlikely, the Browns could also run it back with Joe Flacco, the 2023 Comeback Player of the Year, after he stepped in for an injured Watson last season to unexpectedly lead the Browns into the postseason. The 30-year-old Winston was his usual up-and-down self while filling in for an injured Derek Carr in seven games for the New Orleans Saints in 2023, going 25-for-47 for 264 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. While Winston has plenty of starting experience (80 career starts in nine NFL seasons), he's proven to be a turnover-prone and inconsistent passer when thrust into action. But given Watson's track record for injuries, the Browns are clearly intent on backing him up with an experienced, veteran signal-caller like Winston or Flacco.

Feb 14 2:10pm ET

New Orleans Saints quarterback Jameis Winston, who will become a free agent in March, said he "would love to stay in New Orleans forever." Winston has spent the last four seasons with the team and would remain ticketed for a backup role yet again in 2024 behind Derek Carr if he chooses to re-sign. The Saints are currently projected to be well over the salary cap this year, which is nothing new for the organization, but it could prove difficult for them to get something done to keep Winston around as QB insurance. The 30-year-old veteran has made 10 starts for the team in his four-year run with them and went 25-for-47 for 264 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in seven appearances when Carr was banged up in 2023.

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston agreed to have his contract restructured for salary cap purposes Saturday, Jan. 6, according to a source. His current deal will be extended by two years but it will not affect his pending free agency because they void early in the new league year to allow cap proration.

Jan 6 12:20pm ET

New Orleans Saints quarterback Jameis Winston has agreed to a contract restructure for salary cap purposes, according to a source. The 30-year-old veteran signal-caller adds two years to his contract, but it won't affect his pending free agency, as they will void early in the new 2024 league year to allow salary cap proration. Winston will hit free agency this March after spending the last four seasons as a backup for the Saints. In that time, he's played in 20 games (10 starts) and has gone 200-for-334 for 2,367 yards with 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. It remains to be seen if he'll be content to re-sign in New Orleans as Derek Carr's backup or if he wants to look elsewhere as a short-term bridge QB option. As a starter, Winston can be intriguing as a QB2 streamer in the right matchups, but his turnover-prone ways make him hard to trust on a week-to-week basis.

Dec 4 8:53pm ET

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston will be the starting quarterback in Week 14 if QB Derek Carr (concussion, ribs) is not able to play, according to head coach Dennis Allen.

Fantasy Spin: Fantasy players will need to monitor the situation to see if Winston will join the starting lineup in Week 14. He could be a possible starting option in some two-quarterback leagues but can be avoided in standard leagues.

From TheHuddle

Dec 3 7:53pm ET

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston completed 2-of-5 passes for 41 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 13 against the Detroit Lions, finishing up for the injured QB Derek Carr.

Fantasy Spin: Winston could potentially get the starting nod in Week 14 against the Carolina Panthers, as Carr is dealing with a multitude of injuries including back, head and shoulder ailments. If Winston gets the nod, he is a decent QB2 in most fantasy leagues using two starting signal callers. He can mostly be avoided in leagues of 12 or fewer teams in standard fantasy play, however.

From TheHuddle

Dec 3 4:00pm ET

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr (right arm) exited during the fourth quarter of Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions. He took a big hit from linebacker Bruce Irvin and was helped to the sideline (and then to the locker room) by medical personnel. The Saints haven't issued an official designation on his status, but until Carr can return, Jameis Winston will handle the bulk of quarterbacking duties. Taysom Hill could also receive some opportunities under center.

Nov 12 10:10pm ET

New Orleans Saints quarterback Jameis Winston replaced an injured Derek Carr (concussion, shoulder) in the third quarter of Sunday's loss against Minnesota. Winston ignited the offense, immediately pioneering a touchdown drive after being inserted into the game. The veteran ended up completing 13-of-25 passes for 122 yards with two scores and two interceptions in the loss. Winston will likely revert back to the bench after New Orleans' bye week, as Carr expects to be able to return.

Nov 12 6:53pm ET

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston completed 13-of-25 passes for 122 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in Week 10 against the Minnesota Vikings, coming on in place of the injured QB Derek Carr (concussion, shoulder).

Fantasy Spin: The status of Carr will be determined later, but the Saints have a bye week in Week 11, so the starting quarterback has two full weeks to get well before a decision must be made under center. The Saints are next in action in Week 12 on the road against the Atlanta Falcons in the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

From TheHuddle

Nov 12 3:30pm ET

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr (undisclosed) exited Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings with an apparent upper-body injury. He went into the medical tent before being carted to the locker room, though the team didn't provide immediate information on his status. At the time of his departure, he had completed 13 of 18 passes for 110 yards. He also took two sacks. In the meantime, Carr was replaced by Jameis Winston. There isn't a major drop-off in talent from Carr to Winston, so fantasy managers invested in the likes of Chris Olave, Alvin Kamara, or Taysom Hill shouldn't be too worried.
