2020 RTSports Outlook

Mayfield did not have the breakout season as expected. He seemed to take a step backwards, having a lot of turnover issues. He had 21 interceptions and completed less than 60 percent of his passes. Mayfield did have 25 total touchdowns, giving him 52 touchdowns in two seasons. He gets another new head coach for this coming season, having Kevin Stefanski as his coach. Stefankski is an offensive minded coach that might be a good fit for Mayfield. Mayfield is a very athletic quarterback that does a great job of making plays on the move. He is a fairly accurate passer with a strong arm and a knack for making plays. He lacks ideal height for the position and will force some throws, leading to unnecessary turnovers.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Mayfield is a real question mark for the coming year after finishing 19th overall in fantasy quarterback scoring. He did not live up to the hype last year, so he should be had for a much cheaper price this year. He is worth the risk of grabbing as a top No. 2 or low-end No. 1 because of his ceiling in this offense. If all goes well, expect around 4,000 yards, 30 touchdowns and 12 or so interceptions.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield suffered through a sophomore slump in 2019. After setting a rookie record with 27 touchdown passes in 2018, Mayfield fell to 22 TDs and 21 interceptions in 2019. While plenty of the blame falls on Mayfield, one can also point to a weak pass-blocking offensive line in Cleveland and some poor play-calling by former head coach Freddie Kitchens. The Browns focused on improving their offensive line this season, signing right tackle Jack Conklin away from the Titans and using the No. 10 overall pick on tackle Jedrick Wills. The Browns return a loaded group of skill position players, so the pressure will be on Mayfield to prove his 2019 season was a fluke. Mayfield is being drafted around pick No. 106 as the QB13, making him a solid choice for fantasy drafters who choose to wait on selecting a quarterback. He should end up being a nice value for his drafters at that price.

The Cleveland Browns signed No. 10 overall pick Jedrick Wills to his rookie contract on Tuesday. Wills and the team agreed upon a four-year, $19.7 million deal with a team option for a fifth year. The entire contract is fully guaranteed and the rookie tackle will take home an $11.889 million signing bonus. With Wills under contract, Cleveland has all but two of their draft picks signed as they gear up to begin training camp later in the month. Wills has plenty of work ahead of him as he will be asked to switch from right tackle, which he played in college, to left tackle. All reports about Wills' switch have been positive up until this point as the protector of Baker Mayfield's blind side.

Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said this week that he will wait to let the offensive play-calling decision play out during the preseason, whether it's him making the calls or offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt. Stefanski also has reason to believe that the players are ready to hit the ground running in July for training camp after virtual offseason meetings this year. The Browns might have a good problem on their hands with figuring out how to balance touches for running backs Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry and tight end Austin Hooper. While the Browns offense was a disappointment in 2019 behind a terrible offensive line, quarterback Baker Mayfield and company are expected to make strides this year in what should be an offense featuring many two-tight end looks.

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield threw seven interceptions on throws that traveled at least 20 yards during the 2019 season.

Fantasy Spin: Mayfield will be working in a new offense this season and will have one of the top groups of pass catchers to work with in the NFL. He has a chance to be a No. 1 quarterback in all fantasy leagues in 2020.

Jun 25 3:33pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield has been discouraged to work out with teammates in effort to limit the chance of contracting and spreading COVID-19, head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters during a Thursday, June 25, Zoom call.

Fantasy Spin: While it would be nice for all of the receiving targets and Mayfield to continue to build chemistry, having an on-field rapport does nothing for fantasy footballers if the grouping isn't actually on the field together. Mayfield has a talented crop of weapons at his disposal, but the offense will rely heavily on the ground game and require Mayfield to become extremely efficient for his stats to stand out in fantasy.

The Cleveland Browns and defensive end Myles Garrett are engaged in contract discussions, setting the stage for a potential mega-extension for the 2017 No. 1 overall pick, according to sources. Garrett still has two years left on his rookie deal after his fifth-year option was exercised, but the Browns have cornerback Denzel Ward, quarterback Baker Mayfield and running back Nick Chubb that they might need to pay in the coming years. Garrett served as six-game suspension for hitting Mason Rudolph with his own helmet, but he had 10 sacks in as many games before the suspension. He can do some serious pass-rushing damage over a full season as one of the most effective pass-rushers in the game. Garrett is a top-five IDP defensive lineman.

Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt has been impressed by quarterback Baker Mayfield's leadership during the offseason virtual program. Hes done everything Id expect from him as a starting quarterback," Van Pelt said. Mayfield also hosted a throwing session for around nine teammates in Austin, Texas. Van Pelt said that Mayfield has quickly grasped the new offense and is making strides with new West Coast footwork. Van Pelt has Mayfield leading with his left foot in the shotgun and is streamlining his footwork under center. He's also removing a big stagger step from his dropbacks. Mayfield was talked up prior to the 2019 season, too, and he disappointed in his second season. But the third-year signal-caller does have everything in place for a rebound and is in an offense that should cater more to his strengths, making him a value QB2 with upside for QB1 status by season's end.

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield has been streamlining his footwork this offseason over virtual calls, according to offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt. Van Pelt said he wants his quarterbacks using West Coast footwork, and he has gotten Mayfield to remove a giant stagger step from his dropbacks.

Fantasy Spin: Mayfield took 40 sacks last season - up from 25 in 14 games in 2019 - so improved rhythm could help keep him upright in 2020. Quicker throws could also lead to a higher completion percentage after he dropped from 63.8 percent to 59.4 percent from his rookie to sophomore season.

From TheHuddle

Jun 2 5:00pm ET

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield's deep-ball passer rating was significantly worse in 2019 (72.9) than it was in his rookie season (106). However, he still had a positive completion percentage on his deep attempts last season, despite attempting tight-window passes down the field on 40.6 percent of his attempts. Mayfield also had the luxury of open receivers on those deep shots on just 14.1 percent of his attempts. There wasn't much to like about Mayfield's game last season, especially since he was selected in fantasy drafts with high-end QB1 expectations. If Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry stay healthy, Mayfield could have a breakout season behind a better offensive line in an offensive system that should play to his strengths as a QB. Draft the former No. 1 overall pick as a high-end QB2 with upside for more.

Jun 1 1:03pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield has been buying into the ways of new head coach Kevin Stefanski. The third-year quarterback has been 'moving in silence,' which is a dramatic change for the normally outspoken Mayfield. He was asked to tone down his rhetoric by Stefanski, and Mayfield has taken it to heart, which some around the team view as a sign of improving maturity.

Fantasy Spin: Look for a bunch of play-action passing from Mayfield, and we've already seen reports about him working on his footwork in relation to this emphasized aspect of the new offense. In 2020, if Mayfield fails, it won't be for a lack of weaponry. Stefanski has been able to get the most out of his quarterbacks in Minnesota, although we haven't see huge fantasy returns as a result. Nevertheless, Mayfield will be tasked with being more efficient, and that will go a long way in keeping him useful on a weekly basis.

May 31 2:50pm ET

NFL.com's Bucky Brooks thinks that Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is primed for the best season of his career in new head coach Kevin Stefanski's offense. Cleveland's 12-personnel packages featuring tight ends Austin Hooper and David Njoku, along with receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry, and running back Nick Chubb, will be hard to stop. Mayfield averaged 9.0 yards per attempt (third-most in the NFL) in 12-personnel setups last year, and that formation is Stefanski's preference. Mayfield was also much better on play-action passes last year, so the Browns should look to feature those types of plays to take the pressure off the third-year passer. Cleveland's rebuilt offensive line should also give Mayfield better protection in 2020. All of this should add up to Mayfield being much more productive under Stefanski, making him a fine QB2 target with QB1 upside after his disappointing 2019 campaign.

May 27 7:33pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield said he has been working on a change to his footwork that offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt asked him to try out. He said he is getting more comfortable with the new footwork.

Fantasy Spin: Mayfield is coming off a disappointing 2019 season but will still have a lot of weapons to work with in the passing game. Fantasy players should consider Mayfield a No. 2 quarterback at this point, but he has a chance to be a No. 1 fantasy quarterback if he improves his play.

May 27 7:30pm ET

Coming off a rocky second season in the NFL, Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is taking a different approach heading into the 2020 season. "It's just time to work, do our thing, instead of talking about it," Mayfield said Wednesday. "This is the first media thing I've done, just because there's no need to be talking about it." Mayfield has been outspoken in his first two years, but he ranked second in the league with 21 interceptions last season. He's trying to let his play do the talking from now on. The signal-caller thinks he can improve in Kevin Stefanski's multiple-tight end, play-action-heavy offense this year. He has plenty of weapons around him to turn it around in 2020, and he'll have QB1 upside at a QB2 price.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield recently invited several teammates to join him for workouts in his hometown of Austin, Texas. The Browns facility is closed at least through the end of the month due to the coronavirus, leading Mayfield to get creative in attempts to get reps with some of his pass-catchers. Wide receivers Rashard Higgins and Damion Ratley along with tight ends Austin Hooper and David Njoku were all present for the workouts. It was apparently Hooper's idea to get together with Mayfield as the free-agent signee surely wants to establish some rapport with his new quarterback. After disappointing in 2019, the Cleveland offense should bounce-back for fantasy owners in 2020.

From RotoBaller

May 14 11:43pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield lost 294 yards due to receiver error on accurate throws last season. The mark was the 11th-highest in the league for a quarterback.

From TheHuddle

May 14 11:00pm ET

Cleveland Browns rookie offensive tackle Jedrick Wills, the 10th overall pick in the draft and the second of four offensive tackles to come off the board within the first 13 picks, will shift over to the left side to protect quarterback Baker Mayfield's blind side immediately. He'll have left guard Joel Bitonio, who was selected to each of the last two Pro Bowls, at his side to help ease the transition to the NFL. Wills has drawn comparisons to nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters. Cleveland's offensive line was a mess in 2019, contributing to Mayfield's disappointing season. If the Browns can shore up their protection, Mayfield and the entire offense could have a huge bounce-back year.

From RotoBaller

May 14 6:43pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield is leading workouts with several teammates in his hometown of Austin, Texas. TE David Njoku and WRs Rashard Higgins and Damion Ratley have been among those present.

From TheHuddle

May 3 6:23pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield completed 66.8 percent of his passes in between one and 20 yards in 2019 - the lowest such mark in the league.

Fantasy Spin: Mayfield was one of several quarterbacks who didn't get a ton of help from his offensive line and dealt with injuries to important playmakers (Odell Beckham Jr. and David Njoku, in this case). The Browns most definitely upgraded their offensive line in the offseason and should be getting a healthy OBJ back, so Mayfield could easily return to the form that had fantasy owners buzzing after his rookie year in 2020.

From TheHuddle

May 1 8:50am ET

Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry expects quarterback Baker Mayfield to have a "fantastic" year. Though Berry acknowledged Mayfield's struggles last season, he feels confident that the third-year signal-caller will bounce back under new head coach and former Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski. Last season, the 25-year-old completed just over 59 percent of his passes for 3,827 yards while throwing 22 touchdowns and one less interception.

From RotoBaller

Apr 23 9:40pm ET

The Cleveland Browns selected Alabama offensive tackle Jedrick Wills with the 10th overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft on Thursday. Wills was the alpha male for Alabama's offensive line in 2019, per quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Quarterback Baker Mayfield was running for his life in 2019, so the Browns will bring in Wills to serve as Mayfield's blind-side protector in 2020. Jack Conklin, who was signed in free agency, should now stick on the right side. Wills could have the most upside of any of the top offensive tackles in this year's draft and has been excellent in pass protection. With all of Cleveland's aerial weapons, Wills should give Mayfield more time to find them.
