The Washington Commanders announced on Wednesday that they signed free-agent defensive end Clelin Ferrell to an undisclosed deal. Ferrell was drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders in 2019 in the first round (fourth overall) out of Clemson and spent his first four years with the Black and Silver before recording 28 tackles (15 solo), 3.5 sacks, six tackles for loss, 13 QB hits, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 17 regular-season starts in 2023 with the San Francisco 49ers. The 26-year-old wasn't available for the team's Super Bowl run due to a knee injury, but he should be healthy for the start of the 2024 regular season this fall in D.C. Ferrell will provide defensive-line depth for the Commanders after producing 133 career tackles (73 solo), 13.5 sacks, 21 tackles for loss, 45 QB hits, 12 passes defended, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 75 games (47 starts) over his five NFL seasons.

Free-agent cornerback Michael Davis is signing with the Washington Commanders, according to Ari Meirov of the 33rd Team. The former 2017 undrafted free agent spent seven seasons with the Chargers, racking up 348 tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles, eight interceptions, and 69 passes defended in 107 games (74 starts). The Commanders have now signed or agreed to terms with four defensive backs this offseason, so it's clear the franchise is looking to vastly improve in the backend under new head coach Dan Quinn. Washington gave up a league-worst 262.2 passing yards per game in 2023.

The Washington Commanders signed free-agent cornerback Noah Igbinoghene to an undisclosed deal on Sunday, according to a source. Igbinoghene represents a depth signing for Washington's secondary, and he can also contribute on special teams. The 24-year-old former 30th overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft by the Miami Dolphins out of Auburn has started just five of the 37 games he's appeared in over his four NFL seasons with the Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys, so he certainly hasn't lived up to his first-round pedigree. He was traded from Miami to Dallas before the 2023 season and didn't record any stats in the five games he appeared in for the Cowboys. Igbinoghene is following former Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn to D.C.

Updating previous reports, free-agent DE Dorance Armstrong (Cowboys), LB Frankie Luvu (Panthers), DE Dante Fowler (Cowboys) and S Jeremy Chinn (Panthers) officially signed with the Washington Commanders Friday, March 15. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed, but earlier reports stated Armstrong signed a three-year, $45 million contract, Luvu signed a three-year, $36 million deal and Chinn signed a one-year contract worth as much as $5.1 million.

Seattle Seahawks perennial Pro Bowler and All-Pro linebacker Bobby Wagner is signing a one-year deal worth a maximum value of $8.5 million on Wednesday with the Washington Commanders, according to sources. The deal includes $6 million in guarantees. New Commanders head coach Dan Quinn was with Wagner for a decade in Seattle and will be reuniting on the East coast. Despite his age (33), the former second-round pick in 2012 out of Utah State continues to be a starting commodity in IDP fantasy leagues after he generated a league-high 183 combined tackles (96 solo), 3.5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss, six QB hits and a fumble recovery in 17 games in his return to Seattle in 2023. Wagner is a huge addition for a Washington defense that was regularly trampled last season.

Free-agent safety and special teams ace Jeremy Reaves is signing a two-year deal to remain with the Washington Commanders, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. The 27-year-old was named a Pro Bowler and first-team All-Pro in 2022 for his special teams ability, but he played in just five games in 2023 due to a partially torn ACL. Overall, Reaves has posted 108 tackles and one sack in 45 career games. He's unlikely to earn much playing time at safety for new head coach Dan Quinn, but the organization wanted to bring him back as a special teams leader.

Mar 12 5:00pm ET

Free-agent safety Jeremy Chinn is expected to sign a one-year deal worth up to $5.1 million with the Washington Commanders, according to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report. The former second-round pick has spent his entire four-year NFL career with the Carolina Panthers, where he racked up 324 tackles, four sacks, three forced fumbles, two interceptions, and 17 passes defended in 54 games. He becomes the fifth defensive player Washington has agreed to terms with over the last two days, joining Dorance Armstrong, Frankie Luvu, Dante Fowler Jr., and Clelin Ferrell. New head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Adam Peters appear to be committed to improving from last year's defense that ranked dead-last in points per game allowed (30.5).

Mar 12 4:50pm ET

Free-agent edge rusher Dante Fowler Jr. is signing a one-year deal with the Washington Commanders, according to Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post. Fowler has spent the last two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys under Dan Quinn, so he'll be familiar with the defensive scheme in Washington right away. The 2015 No. 3 overall pick has 45 sacks through his first nine seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Rams, Atlanta Falcons, and Dallas Cowboys. He's never quite lived up to his draft capital, but he's a solid rotational pass rusher, and NFL teams can never have enough of those. Fowler is the third player from last year's Cowboys team to sign with Washington, joining center Tyler Biadasz and defensive end Dorance Armstrong.

Mar 12 9:50am ET

Free-agent edge rusher Clelin Ferrell is expected to sign with the Washington Commanders, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic. The No. 4 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft has not lived up to his draft capital, posting 13.5 sacks through his first 75 NFL games with the Raiders and San Francisco 49ers. The 24-year-old is likely to be utilized as a rotational pass rusher in Dan Quinn's defense, but expectations should be tempered. Washington continues to be active in the free-agent market, and the 53-man roster should be much deeper in 2024.

Mar 11 6:30pm ET

Former Carolina Panthers linebacker Frankie Luvu agreed to terms on a three-year deal for a maximum value of $36 million on Monday with the Washington Commanders. New Commanders head coach Dan Quinn isn't wasting any time adding to his new defense in D.C., adding both Luvu and defensive lineman Dorance Armstrong on Monday. The 27-year-old Luvu was a top-25 IDP linebacker in his third year in Carolina in 2023, recording a career-high 125 tackles (66 solo), 5.5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, 11 QB hits, five passes defensed and two forced fumbles in 17 starts. It was the fourth straight season that Luvu set a new career-high in tackles, and he's quickly put himself on the IDP fantasy radar heading into 2024 as he joins the Commanders.

Impending free agent Bobby Wagner is expected to test the free agent market, and a potential return to the Seattle Seahawks is considered unlikely, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The nine-time Pro Bowler and 10-time All-Pro selection is coming off a career-high 183 tackles in 2023, marking the third time he has led the NFL in tackles during his hall-of-fame career. The 33-year-old still has plenty of ability, so there should be no shortage of suitors for his services heading into 2024.

The Los Angeles Rams are promoting pass-rush coordinator and linebackers coach Chris Shula to defensive coordinator, according to league sources. Shula will be taking over for Raheem Morris, who left the team after three seasons as their defensive coordinator to become the next head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. Before the promotion, the Miami Dolphins were looking to interview Shula for the same position. Shula has been in LA with head coach Sean McVay since February of 2017, when he was hired as a defensive assistant. He was also a defensive quality control coach with the Los Angeles Chargers for two years before joining the Rams. The Rams defense ranked 22nd in total DVOA in 2023 after losing key players like cornerback Jalen Ramsey and linebacker Bobby Wagner last offseason. Shula is the grandson of late Hall of Fame coach Don Shula.

The San Francisco 49ers D/ST will take on the Green Bay Packers in the Divisional Round on Saturday night in Santa Clara. The Packers have been tough on opposing fantasy defenses lately. In their last five regular season games Green Bay has protected quarterback Jordan Love skillfully, only allowing one sack per game. For his part, Love has taken care of the ball, throwing one total interception in that time. In last week's first-round embarrassment of the Cowboys, Green Bay committed no turnovers. San Francisco's excellent defense comes into the game rested and near full-strength except for DE Clelin Ferrell (knee) who is out and LB Dre Greenlaw is questionable (Achilles tendinitis). Despite Green Bay's recent hot streak, San Francisco has the pass rush and the motivation to flip the script and turn in a solid fantasy performance.
