Free-agent RB John Kelly (Rams) is being signed to the Cleveland Browns' practice squad, according to a source Tuesday, Sept. 8.
Los Angeles Rams CB Adonis Alexander, LB Daniel Bituli, TE Kendall Blanton, C Cohl Cabral, OG Jamil Demby, WR Earnest Edwards, S Jake Gervase, PK Lirim Hajrullahu, S Juju Hughes, RB John Kelly, OG Jeremiah Kolone, WR JJ Koski, CB Dayan Lake, PK Austin MacGinnis, S Tyrique McGhee, LB Derrick Moncrief and WR Easop Winston were waived Friday, Sept. 4.
Los Angeles Rams RBs Cam Akers, Darrell Henderson, John Kelly and Malcolm Brown will likely be expected to begin the season in a committee, as head coach Sean McVay specifically mentioned the way the San Francisco 49ers used their running backs last season as a model for what he hopes the Rams will attempt to do at the position in 2020. 'I think it'll just naturally work itself out. I think if you look at that success San Fran had last year with that running back-by-committee approach. What I thought Kyle (Shanahan) and their players did a great job of is, 'Hey, we're going to have an open-mind approach, we're going to be committed to trying to have some balance and then we'll go with the hot hand or whoever really expresses himself as deserving of the carries,' McVay said on The Helliepod.
Fantasy Spin: McVay did utilize a committee of sorts as an offensive coordinator for the Washington franchise from 2014-16, but a clear leader seemed to emerge from the running back room each year. The odds are strong that Akers will be that guy in 2020. However, with this offseason being what it is, it could easily take until November before one back emerges from the pack. As such, fantasy owners would be wise to look elsewhere for an RB2 candidate unless they can get Akers at a steep discount in drafts.
