2019 RTSports Outlook

If not for Patrick Mahomes' huge season last year, Ryan's big year would have been talked about more. He had a great rebound season, finishing second overall in fantasy quarterback scoring. Ryan had 38 total touchdowns to just seven interceptions. He also threw for nearly 5,000 yards, finishing 76 yards shy of that mark. He had touchdowns all but the first game of the season. Ryan also had eight 300-yard games and eight games with three-plus scores. Ryan was super consistent. He gets Dirk Koetter back as his offensive coordinator this year, a coach that helped him produce some of his best stats to date. Ryan has at least 26-passing touchdowns seven of nine seasons and eight straight 4,000-yard seasons. Ryan is an accurate, intelligent quarterback with a strong arm and the ability to fit the ball in tight spaces. If there is a knock on him, he can flop in the big game and doesn't do well under intense pressure. The Falcons throw often but have a balanced offense with a lot of talent.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Ryan was a huge bargain last year for those that drafted him, finishing just behind Mahomes in the rankings. He won't come as cheap this year and for good reason. He has enjoyed huge seasons two of the last three years. Consider him a top-five fantasy quarterback. He can get around 4,500 yards and 35 touchdowns with few turnovers.

RotoBaller's Outlook

4,924 yards 35 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Not a bad stat line. That is the 2018 line that meantMatt Ryan finished as the QB2 for fantasy, behind only Patrick Mahomes. He did this despite losing Devonta Freeman for the entire season, and playing behind a mishmash offensive line. In 2019 all of these obstacles look to be fixed. The Falcons added Chris Lindstrom and Kaleb McGary to the offensive line through the draft, as the Falcons have done their best to keep Matt Ryan upright this season. His ranking as the QB2 may not be repeated, with a number of talented quarterbacks looking to jump ahead of him. But this does not mean his numbers are going to regress either. He could very easily finish with the same or even better numbers and still finish in the QB 5-6 range. Some would try to say this is a disappointment, but they would be wrong. While there could be four or five quarterbacks who end up finishing higher in the ranks than Matt Ryan, they will also be drafted much higher, starting with Mahomes in the second-round, through to Baker Mayfield in the fifth. Ryan, on the other hand, is currently going at the end of the seventh or early eighth round, meaning you can use those draft savings on a better player at a more important position. The difference between QB4 and QB12 in 2018 was less than two points per game, meaning even the top-five guys are not significantly better than the middle of the pack players. If you want to get one of the top-five options anyway why not go with the player who is going latest in drafts, and even behind some players likely to finish behind him. Look for Ryan in the seventh round and be set at quarterback all season long as Atlanta rises from the ashes of 2018.

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan said Monday, June 24, he's happy with his team's selections of G Chris Lindstrom and OT Kaleb McGary in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. 'I'm really excited about those guys ... they're tough, they're physical, they move well and it's gonna be a lot of fun to play behind them,' Ryan said.

Fantasy Spin: Ryan was sacked 42 times in 2018, the most since 2013. Only seven quarterbacks were sacked more times than Ryan in 2018. Some extra time to make his reads could only help Ryan improve on a third-ranked interception percentage of 1.2 from last season.

Jun 24 6:33pm ET

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan said Monday, June 24, he's excited to be reunited with offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter. Koetter served as the Falcons offensive coordinator from 2012-14 before leaving to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers first as offensive coordinator in 2015, and then as head coach from 2016-18. He was re-hired on January 8 after being fired by the Buccaneers. He'll replace Steve Sarkisian, who spent the last two years as Atlanta's offensive coordinator.

Fantasy Spin: Ryan completed 67.4 percent of his passes for 13,928 yards and 86 touchdowns against 45 interceptions over Koetter's three-year run in Atlanta. Ryan was named to the Pro Bowl in 2012 and 2014. The 34-year-old is being taken as the sixth quarterback in standard (non-PPR) fantasy drafts. He's a safe option for those who don't like to gamble at QB.

May 24 9:33pm ET

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan said he is excited to be reunited with offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter. 'We've come up with some really good stuff,' Ryan said.

Fantasy Spin: Ryan is coming off a career-high 35 touchdown passes last season, and Koetter has engineered some potent passing attacks. With plenty of weapons around him, Ryan is a safe bet to deliver QB1 production again in 2019.

May 2 2:40pm ET

The Atlanta Falcons made it a priority to get quarterback Matt Ryan some more protection on the offensive line in last week's draft, selecting two offensive linemen in the first round last Thursday after Ryan was sacked 42 times in 2018, the second highest total of his career. Guard Chris Lindstrom was the 14th overall pick and right tackle Kaleb McGary went 31st overall. It was just the second time the Falcons took two offensive linemen with their first two picks since 2012. Head coach Dan Quinn is hesitant to name both rookies immediate starters, but there's a chance they both slot in right away.

Apr 30 12:43pm ET

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan was sacked or hit a career-high 76 times last season, so the Falcons made his protection a draft priority, selecting a pair of offensive linemen in the first round. 'We knew what we needed to do this offseason and that was to continue to fortify that line and make sure that we were protecting Matt,' Atlanta GM Thomas Dimitroff said. 'And we weren't going to run into what we ran into last year.'

Fantasy Spin: Despite the protection problems, Ryan still threw for 4,924 yards and a career-high 35 TDs to finish third among fantasy QBs and should be valued as a back-end QB1 in drafts this offseason.

Apr 26 12:00am ET

The Atlanta Falcons traded up with the Rams and selected Washington offensive tackle Kaleb Mcgary with the No. 31 overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft. Mcgary doesn't have great length but is physical and is just a solid athlete overall. The Falcons really put an emphasis on their offensive line in the first round, which is great news for quarterback Matt Ryan and the team's running game. Mcgary could wind up playing right tackle in his rookie season in Atlanta.

Mar 12 9:23am ET

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan restructured his contract Tuesday, March 12, to create $7 million in salary cap space. He converted $8.75 million of his 2019 base salary into a signing bonus.

Jan 31 8:53pm ET

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan (wrist) said he skipped the Pro Bowl because of a wrist injury he dealt with during the final game of the regular season. Ryan said his wrist is no longer a concern.

Fantasy Spin: Ryan has thrown for at least 4,000 yards in each of the last eight seasons and has thrown at least 35 touchdowns in two of the last three seasons. He should have a good receiving corps to work with next season and can be a low-end No. 1 fantasy quarterback.
