2020 RTSports Outlook

Thielen had injury issues last year and struggled to get going. He had one 100-yard game during the regular season and another in the playoffs. Thielen finished with 30 receptions for 418 yards and six touchdowns in 10 games. He had two straight 1,200-yard seasons before last year. He remains a big part of the Vikings passing game and maybe their top receiver in the offense. Thielen just makes plays. He runs top routes and can be a big-play threat despite lacking some top-end speed for the position. He has plus hands and a knack for making clutch plays. Fantasy Outlook: Thielen is a good buy-low candidate after last year. He can get back to his numbers of past years as long as he is healthy. Consider him an elite No. 2 for fantasy teams, getting around 90 receptions for 1,200 yards and 10 scores.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen finds himself in a slightly different place in 2020 than he has in previous seasons. With Stefon Diggs now in Buffalo and the team relying on rookie Justin Jefferson and either Bisi Johnson or Tajae Sharpe to play big minutes, Thielen is the unquestioned No. 1 option for the Vikes now. A healthy Thielen should see a massive amount of targets, maybe even the 153 he received in 2018, and seems bound for his second 100-reception season. An injury-plagued 2019 saw Thielen play in 10 games, catching just 30 passes for 418 yards, though he turned six of those into touchdowns. If we assume he enters 2020 with a clean bill of health, we can just go ahead and scrap anything from last year in our projection for this upcoming season. Thielen should be a reliable fantasy WR2 due to his projected market share and his usually-high catch rate, and with him likely being drafted in the third round in most 12-team leagues, Thielen should be a valuable addition to any fantasy team. Its worth the injury risk. Its also worth the risk that increased defensive pressure on Thielen causes him to be less effective, because his overall volume should even out some of those worries. Trust Adam Thielen in 2020.

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen ranked third last season in passer rating when targeted, according to Pro Football Focus. Despite missing some time due to a hamstring injury that relegated him to just 10 games, quarterback Kirk Cousins maintained a 131.9 when looking toward the 29-year-old veteran in 2019 and also did not record an interception when targeting him. The expectations are mixed for the veteran in 2020 despite the departure of Stefon Diggs, with the seventh-year man expected to concede plays to running back Dalvin Cook in addition to fighting for Cousin's attention with the newly acquired Tajae Sharpe and rookie Justin Jefferson.

From RotoBaller

May 19 7:13pm ET

Minnesota Vikings WR Adam Thielen received a Pro Football Focus grade of 95.4 against Cover 1 defense on a target depth of 10-19 yards over the last three seasons to rank second among all wide receivers. Only New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas received a higher grade.

Fantasy Spin: Thielen is now the Vikings' unquestioned top target following the trade of WR Stefon Diggs this offseason. He's likely to face the No. 1 corner against all opponents, and he's also likely to face more double teams. He could prove to be a fantasy disappointment if drafted as a WR1 this season.

From TheHuddle

May 10 9:33pm ET

Minnesota Vikings WR Adam Thielen has just two 100-yard receiving efforts in his last 18 games since opening the 2018 season with eight straight games of 100-plus yards.

Fantasy Spin: Injuries played a role in his drop in production in 2019, and Thielen still managed six touchdowns in 10 games last year. Throw in the offseason trade of Stefon Diggs, and Thielen should deliver WR2 numbers as the go-to option in Minnesota's passing attack.

From TheHuddle

Jan 11 10:10pm ET

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen caught five of seven targets for 50 yards in a 27-10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday. Thielen didn't appear to be slowed down by his recent injury but was unable to get much going as the 49ers Defense suffocated the Vikings offense all game long. Thielen had a very disappointing season as he missed a lot of time with a hamstring injury and finished with just 30 catches for 418 yards and six touchdowns on the year. He's best viewed as a WR2 heading into next year's fantasy drafts as his potential ceiling is capped with Stefon Diggs stealing looks and Dalvin Cook commanding a lot of touches out of the backfield.

From RotoBaller

Jan 11 7:43pm ET

Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins went 21-for-29 for 172 yards, one touchdown and one interception against the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round playoff game. RB Dalvin Cook rushed for 18 yards on nine carries and caught six passes for eight yards during the game. WR Stefon Diggs caught two passes for 57 yards and one touchdown on five targets. WR Adam Thielen caught five passes for 50 yards on seven targets. TE Irv Smith caught three passes for 39 yards on three targets, while TE Kyle Rudolph caught two passes for four yards on three targets.

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen (ankle) is active for Saturday's Divisional round matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. Thielen suffered a cut to his ankle on Wednesday that required stitches, but he will suit up for the do-or-die game, as expected. Stefon Diggs (illness) is also active. Both receivers face a daunting matchup in the 49ers Defense as they rank second in pass DVOA and are returning three starters from injury. Thielen may be the better play of the two as he has always produced better than Diggs against zone coverage, but both profile as risky options in this difficult matchup on the road.

From RotoBaller

Jan 11 3:23pm ET

Minnesota Vikings WR Adam Thielen (ankle) is active for the Divisional Round game Saturday, Jan. 11, against the San Francisco 49ers.

Fantasy Spin: Thielen caught seven of nine targets for 129 yards in the Wild Card Round against the New Orleans Saints and will be counted on for a big role once again against the Niners. He should be started in all formats.

From TheHuddle

Jan 11 2:53pm ET

Minnesota Vikings WR Adam Thielen (ankle) tested his lacerated ankle Saturday, Jan. 11, in a pre-game workout. It's the first time Thielen has run since his ankle was gashed Wednesday in practice and required stitches.

Fantasy Spin: Thielen is expected to play, and we'll know soon as the Vikings' inactives list is due out shortly.

From TheHuddle

Jan 10 3:43pm ET

Updating previous reports, Minnesota Vikings WR Adam Thielen (ankle) is expected to wear protective padding over his injured ankle during the Divisional Round playoff game, according to a source.

Fantasy Spin: Thielen likely will be able to play in the game, but fantasy players can check the inactive list to make sure. He is one of the main targets in the passing game for the Vikings and should be a starting option in all leagues.

From TheHuddle

Jan 10 2:40pm ET

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen (ankle) is expected to wear protective padding around his stitched-up ankle in the Divisional game against the 49ers on Saturday, according to a source. Thielen is questionable to play, but all signs point to him being active in this big game. He had seven catches for 100-plus yards in the wild-card round, but Thielen has been injured for most of the season and will be facing off against a very strong Niners pass defense. There's also the chance that Thielen's stitches open up during the game on Saturday, which could cause him to miss some game action. He's shaping up as an extremely risky DFS option relative to his price.

From RotoBaller

Jan 10 11:40am ET

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen (ankle) isn't expected to do much until the Divisional game against the 49ers on Saturday, but he should be able to play despite needing stitches for a cut he suffered in practice earlier this week. There's optimism around Thielen, but the team doesn't know how his stitches will hold up during the game. Already going up against a tough 49ers Defense, Thielen becomes an obvious bust candidate in DFS at his current $6,200 DraftKings price this weekend despite having second catches and over 100 yards in last week's upset over the Saints.

From RotoBaller

Jan 10 9:53am ET

Minnesota Vikings WR Adam Thielen (ankle) is expected to play in the Divisional game Saturday, Jan. 11. He will remain off of his feet until game time.

Fantasy Spin: He'll draw a tough matchup against the San Francisco 49ers, and he'll probably have to manage irritation or pain with the stitches in his ankle. Thielen is still one of the better options in DFS and playoff pools.

From TheHuddle

Jan 9 9:30pm ET

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen (ankle) is projecting to be a high-risk start for Saturday's Divisional round matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. Thielen suffered a cut to his ankle in Wednesday's practice and did not practice on Thursday, but he is still expected to suit up for the pivotal playoff contest. Thielen is coming off his first big game since his Week 7 injury, but the 49ers Defense is a difficult matchup as they allow the least passing yards per game and rank second in pass DVOA. He has historically had more success than Stefon Diggs against zone coverage, which the 49ers often use, but the red flags are clear to see here. Thielen is not a player to consider for cash game DFS lineups, but he could be used as a high-risk, high-ceiling receiver in tournaments.

From RotoBaller

Jan 9 6:03pm ET

Minnesota Vikings WR Adam Thielen (ankle) didn't practice Thursday, Jan. 9.

Fantasy Spin: Thielen is officially listed as questionable for the game Saturday, Jan. 11, against the San Francisco 49ers, but he has been adamant he'll play. He caught seven of nine targets for 129 yards in the Wild Card Round against the New Orleans Saints and will remain a top option even in a tougher matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.

From TheHuddle

Jan 9 5:03pm ET

Minnesota Vikings CB Mackensie Alexander (knee) did not practice all week and has been ruled out for the team's NFC Divisional Round game against the San Francisco 49ers. S Jayron Kearse (toe, knee) also did not practice all week and is listed as doubtful. WR Adam Thielen (ankle) did not practice Thursday, Jan. 9, and is listed as questionable. DT Linval Joseph (knee), WR Stefon Diggs (illness), CB Xavier Rhodes (ankle, shoulder), DE Stephen Weatherly (foot), OG Josh Kline (elbow), DT Shamar Stephen (knee), TE Tyler Conklin (knee) and RB Dalvin Cook (shoulder) practiced in full Thursday and have been removed from the injury report. DE Ifeadi Odenigbo (hamstring) was not given a practice designation for a second straight day but also no longer appears on the injury report.

From TheHuddle

Jan 9 3:20pm ET

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen (ankle) didn't practice on Friday and is listed as questionable for the Divisional Round against the 49ers on Saturday. Thielen was injured in practice on Wednesday and required stitches for his ankle. He's still expected to play against San Francisco, but the Vikings are playing it cautious with him after he missed some time during the regular season with a hamstring ailment. Thielen limped to the finish line in the regular season with three catches for 27 yards in the final three games, but he had seven receptions for 129 yards in the wild-card win over the Saints. His new injury, however, will make him a risky DFS selection against a stout 49ers secondary on Saturday. Olabisi Johnson would be the No. 2 wideout if Thielen is a surprise inactive.

From RotoBaller

Jan 9 2:13pm ET

Minnesota Vikings Adam Thielen is listed as questionable for the team's divisional-round playoff game at San Francisco on Saturday, Jan. 11. 'I just got a little tangled up in practice but I'm going to do whatever it takes -- it's playoffs,' Thielen said on NFL Network Thursday. 'I'll do whatever it takes to be out there on Saturday with my teammates and try to help this team win.'

Fantasy Spin: We'll need to monitor Thielen's status all the way up through the release of the pre-game inactives list Saturday, but it sounds like Thielen will play as he tries to follow up on his impressive wild-card round showing (7 catches for 129 yards on 9 targets).

From TheHuddle

Jan 9 12:43pm ET

Minnesota Vikings WR Adam Thielen (ankle) was present at the start of practice Thursday, Jan. 9, but was not participating.

Fantasy Spin: Thielen received stitches to close a cut on his ankle suffered in practice Wednesday, and he should be able to play in Saturday's divisional round, even if he misses some practice time. Stay tuned as we'll know more as the week goes on.
