2019 RTSports Outlook

The emergence of O.J. Howard saw a big decrease in production for Brate last year. He had 30 receptions, which was his lowest total since 2015. He had 105 receptions the previous two seasons. Howard is hear to stay, though, making Brate the backup for the Bucs. He'll get some work in this role but his fantasy ceiling is a little limited. Brate is a tall tight end with good speed for the position. He isn't a great blocker and lacks some strength, but is a big asset in the passing game because of his size and speed. Brate is a playmaker.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Brate might need a change of scenery or injury to kickstart his fantasy value. If that doesn't happen, he probably isn't worth a roster spot for fantasy teams. He should get around 35 receptions for 350 yards and four or so touchdowns.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Cameron Brate (hip) said he continues to rehab and is on schedule to be ready to practice when training camp starts in two months. Brate is not practicing at organized team activities this week after playing through a hip injury for much of last year. There should be a role for Brate alongside O.J. Howard in Bruce Arians' offense, but Brate's ceiling might be capped as a touchdown-dependent TE2 unless Howard misses time with an injury. The 27-year-old caught 30 passes for 289 yards and six touchdowns last year and has at least six scores in each of the last three seasons.

May 21 1:03pm ET

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Cameron Brate (hip) said Tuesday, May 21, he's rehabbing on schedule as he recovers from hip surgery earlier this offseason and is on course to be ready for training camp in late July.

Fantasy Spin: Brate is coming off three-year lows in targets (49), receptions (30) and yards (289) but did have six scoring receptions last season. It's a new offense, though, and fellow TE O.J. Howard is expected back after an ankle injury, so don't value Brate as anything more than a low-end TE2 in fantasy drafts.

Apr 24 9:25am ET

Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Cameron Brate, who had offseason hip surgery to replace a torn labrum, is running and catching the ball without pain. He will likely be cleared for training camp but is expected to miss organized team activities and the mandatory minicamp in June. Because of poor health, Brate had only 30 catches for 289 yards and six touchdowns after two seasons where he averaged 52 catches and 625 yards. The labrum injury was actually suffered in 2017, and Brate tried to play through it last year. Most of his production came late in the year with O.J. Howard on Injured Reserve. While Brate is a great red-zone target in this offense, Howard will overshadow him in production if he stays healthy. Brate will be a touchdown-dependent TE2. Head coach Bruce Arians' offenses typically only feature one pass-catching tight end as well.

Apr 19 2:03pm ET

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Cameron Brate (hip) says he is back running and catching passes without pain after undergoing surgery to repair a torn hip labrum earlier this offseason. Brate said the injury originally occurred in 2017, but he decided to play though the pain in the 2018 season instead of cutting his campaign short to have surgery.

Fantasy Spin: Even though he played in all 16 games, Brate finished with three-year lows in targets (49), receptions (30) and yards (289). Brate did haul in six TD passes, and his 20 scoring receptions over the last three seasons trails only Travis Kelce (22) among tight ends. Fellow T.B. TE O.J. Howard, though, is back after an ankle injury cut short his breakout 2018 season, and that relegates Brate to low-end TE2 status entering fantasy drafts this summer.

Feb 27 1:23am ET

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Cameron Brate is expected to remain on the roster in 2019 despite being the ninth-highest paid player on the roster with a $7 million base salary, according to Pewter Report's Scott Reynolds, who adds the team has no plans to trade or release him. Brate is also not expected to take a pay cut, as Reynolds reports general manager Jason Licht is 'not a believer in reducing players' salaries because it can reduce some players' incentive to perform up to their abilities.'

Feb 21 10:43pm ET

Minnesota Vikings TE Kyle Rudolph and Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Cameron Brate could be options for the Denver Broncos if they are cap casualties this offseason, according to Bill Barnwell, and Barnwell also believes the Broncos could target a tight end with an early pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Fantasy Spin: After making the move to acquire Joe Flacco, finding a reliable tight end would make sense. Flacco's love for throwing underneath to tight ends once resulted in Dennis Pitta catching 86 passes, so a veteran like Rudolph or Brate should be able to deliver TE1 production as the primary tight end in Denver.

Jan 18 9:33pm ET

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Cameron Brate (hip) had arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn labrum in his hip, according to a source, and Brate is hoping to return for minicamp in June.

Fantasy Spin: The emergence of O.J. Howard has capped Brate's upside, but Jameis Winston has shown a habit of looking Brate's way in the red zone. He will be a touchdown-dependent TE2 in 2019.

Dec 28 11:03pm ET

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Cameron Brate (undisclosed) has been dealing with an injury since the start of the season that has contributed to his dip in performance, according to head coach Dirk Koetter. 'There will probably be more information on that after the season is over,' Koetter said. 'But I think Cam, when he gets healthy again, will return to form very quickly.'

Fantasy Spin: Brate enters the final week of the regular season with 28 catches for 250 yards and six touchdowns, but even if he is healthier in 2019, he is likely stuck as a touchdown-dependent option while playing alongside O.J. Howard.
