2020 RTSports Outlook

Jones started much of his second season and took a pretty good step forward from his rookie year. He topped 1,000 total yards and was 25th overall in fantasy running back scoring. He was a much bigger factor in the passing game the second half of the season, helping his fantasy numbers. He had at least three receptions four of his last eight games. Jones has competition for the starter's job this year in Tampa, though, having Ke'Shawn Vaughn on the roster. The two backs will fight it out for carries. The Bucs have a top offensive attack, so the running back starter in this offense has good fantasy value. Jones can be an electric back with big-play ability. He has great moves and vision. He lacks some ideal size to be a three-down back and does not make many big plays after contact. Jones struggles some with pass protection but improved on that area last year. If he makes more strides, Jones could be a three-down back for the Bucs.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Jones was overlooked a little last year but was a legit help as a No. 2 fantasy back. But nothing is certain now with Vaughn in the mix. Jones will be a wild card, likely splitting work with Vaughn throughout the season. He is looking like a flex back for fantasy teams. Jones can get around 900 total yards, six touchdowns and 30 receptions. His numbers are likely up and down throughout the year.

RotoBaller's Outlook

In 2019, Buccaneers running back Ronald Jones II bounced back from a disappointing rookie campaign and looked much more like the prospect that was receiving first-round buzz prior to the 2018 Draft. While he faced a tumultuous timeshare with the significantly less talented Peyton Barber, when the opportunity was present and plentiful, Jones displayed the running skills and tackle-breaking ability that make him a good back. He eclipsed 1000 yards from scrimmage as a sophomore, participating heavily not only as a runner but also a pass-catcher. Unfortunately, his one fatal flaw is something head coach Bruce Arians does not take lightly, pass-protection. Jones ranked as one of the worst running backs when asked to block in the entire NFL and if he does not improve, it will not be long before he loses snaps to third round pick, Ke'Shawn Vaughn. While Arians historically has preferred one workhorse RB, with the way the league is going, and Tom Brady's history, it is fair to assume that there will continue to be a timeshare in Tampa and Jones will lead it from the start. Jones is absolutely worth grabbing around his ADP and maybe even a round early if running back is running thin. Luckily, there is enough hype around Vaughn for Jones to possibly even fall in drafts.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Ronald Jones drew raves from the coaching staff for how he played near the end of the 2019 season, and beat writer Mark Cook believes that he doesn't 'think there is any question at this point that (Jones) is the starting running back ... unless he completely melts down in (training) camp - or gets injured.'

Fantasy Spin: While Cook notes that the team does like Ke'Shawn Vaughn, the absence of any pre-camp work for rookies should have been a fairly clear indication that the odds were going to be stacked against him in 2020. Cook also noted that he believes Jones will become the team's first 1,000-yard rusher since Doug Martin in 2015 if he can stay healthy. If his ADP continues to hang around the sixth or seventh round in drafts, Jones could easily end up becoming one of the best value picks in fantasy this season.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Ronald Jones' limitations in the passing game have cost him playing time at various points throughout his two-year NFL career, but he is focusing his offseason work on running sharper routes and being more consistent with his hands. In addition, his workout coach also stated that Jones is 225 pounds.

Fantasy Spin: The overwhelming majority of fantasy owners seem to believe the lead role is rookie Ke'Shawn Vaughn's for the taking. While it is possible the third-rounder overtakes Jones at some point, it appears many folks are unwilling to appreciate the strides the second-year back made last season. It's just as likely Jones takes over the backfield in 2020 as it is that he splits time with Vaughn, but the veteran would have to fall on his face in order to be cast aside. Jones boasts significant fantasy RB3 upside as a result.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Ronald Jones was given an endorsement from general manager Jason Licht on Thursday, April 9. 'We have a lot of faith in Ronald. We have more faith in him than we ever have,' Licht said.

Fantasy Spin: While this doesn't say much, and it could easily be construed as "GM speak," the fact Tampa has yet to bring in a running back this offseason says something to Jones' credit. The NFL draft will be interesting for a team with few other glaring needs and a prized new quarterback to help. Jones has RB2 potential if all goes well, but there's also a great deal of concern through uncertainty and his lack of consistently capable play to date.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Ronald Jones averaged a broken tackle once every 7.5 rushing attempts in 2019 - good for the fourth-best mark among qualified rushers in the league. His 23 total broken tackles ranked 11th among all players.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Ronald Jones could face new competition for snaps on third down next season, according to head coach Bruce Arians. 'We'd love to have a pass-catching back,' Arians said.

Fantasy Spin: Jones rebounded in 2019 after a dreadful rookie campaign, tallying 1,031 yards from scrimmage and catching 31 passes. He should still handle most of the work on early downs, but if Jones isn't on the field in passing situations, it is going to limit his ceiling, especially with Tom Brady now under center. He's best viewed as a flex option for the time being.
