2021 RTSports Outlook

The Dolphins hoped to have found their franchise quarterback, taking Tagovailoa in the first round of this year's draft. He is coming off a major hip injury in college but expects to be ready for the start of the year. The Dolphins might not just hand Tagovailoa the starting job his rookie year, though. He could learn some of the year from veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick before taking over as the starter. Tagovailoa was a winner in college. He can make all the throws and plays with is legs. He does struggle some with decision making and will force some throws. He also doesn't have great size for the position and has battled some injury issues in college.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Tagovailoa might be a few years away from being a legit fantasy player. He is not likely to start all year and could have some struggles in the starting lineup when he finally gets there. Look for around 1,500-passing yards, 100-rushing yards and seven or so scores.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Miami Dolphins rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was taken with the fifth selection in this years draft for a reason. After winning championships and setting efficiency records at Alabama, he is expected to continue his success in the NFL. However, with veteran passer Ryan Fitzpatrick still on the roster, the Dolphins coaching staff seems content to let Tagovailoa sit and learn for 2020. The fact that Tagovailoa is still recovering from a major hip injury sustained last season makes this decision even easier. If he sees meaningful snaps this season, Tagovailoa would have an underrated cast of weapons to work with. Receiver DeVante Parker finally broke out in 2019, and 23-year-old pass-catcher Preston Williams showed significant promise as a rookie last season before tearing his ACL. The Dolphins also have a young tight end in Mike Gesicki, whose enormous potential has not yet been realized. Miami added multiple running backs this offseason as well, with Jordan Howard and Matt Breida joining the team to bolster the rushing attack. Tagovailoa is not worth drafting in redraft except for in very deep leagues. He should be a hot commodity on waivers if he assumes the starting position at any point due to his massive talent and the weapons around him.

The Miami Dolphins proved that they are committed to second-year quarterback Tua Tagovailoa when they traded out of the No. 3 overall spot in this year's draft. Shortly thereafter, Miami swung a deal to move back into the top 10 while also securing future first-round picks. General manager Chris Grier explained on Wednesday that the team is looking to build around Tagovailoa with the best players available while also trying to find talent that meshes well with Tagovailoa's strengths. Tagovailoa disappointed in his rookie season while coming off hip surgery in a season during a pandemic, so the Dolphins are expecting him to improve in Year 2. He'll have a full offseason to prepare for the 2021 season as well. Tagovailoa is still a great dynasty asset, but he'll have to prove to fantasy managers in single-year formats that he's more than just a low-end QB2.

Miami Dolphins star cornerback Byron Jones said that the team expects a big leap from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in his sophomore season after he disappointed in his rookie year in 2020. "His contributions to the team have been great so far, but we're looking for even something better this year. It's exciting. I can't wait to see him work his magic," Jones said. Tagovailoa started nine games after being taken fifth overall in the draft, completing 64.1 percent of his passes for 1,814 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. The rookie was hesitant to throw into tight windows and was benched twice in favor of veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick, who is now in Washington. Despite the ups and downs, Miami remains invested in the young QB and will ride or die with him in 2021. The 23-year-old is still a fine dynasty/keeper asset, but he'll be a low-end QB2 in redraft leagues.

Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will be the team's starting QB in 2021. The fifth overall pick in this year's draft, Tagovailoa wasn't all that impressive in his rookie season. The 22-year-old was benched in the Week 16 loss to the Raiders and would've been the backup in Week 17 had veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick not contracted COVID-19. Tagovailoa threw for 361 yards and a touchdown in the loss to the Bills in the regular season finale, but he also threw a season-high three interceptions. He finished with 1,814 yards on 290 pass attempts (6.3 yards per attempt) for 11 touchdowns and five picks. Tagovailoa also ran the ball 36 times for 109 yards and three scores in 10 games (nine starts). There's certainly room for improvement, but he'll be more of a QB2 with upside heading into his sophomore campaign.

Jan 3 10:00pm ET

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was unable to finish out the 2020 season on a high note. It was a must-win game for the Dolphins in this Week 17 battle with the Buffalo Bills. Tagovailoa completed 35 of 58 passing attempts for 361 yards and one touchdown with three interception in the loss. It's tough to pin all the blame on Tagovailoa when he was surrounded by a mediocre cast. It'll be interesting to see if 1,814 passing yards with 11 passing touchdowns and five interceptions in nine games will be enough to earn him the keys to the castle. The Dolphins do hold a top-five draft pick, so maybe they bring in another quarterback to compete with Tagovailoa next season.

Dolphins' QB Tua Tagovailoa passed for 361 yards on 35-of-58 with one touchdown in Sunday's game in Buffalo. He did throw three interceptions including a pick-6 in the loss.

Jan 2 1:00pm ET

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was benched last week in the win over the Las Vegas Raiders. Despite that, the rookie quarterback will draw the start for the Week 17 matchup against the Buffalo Bills. A secondary that has held their last two opponents to less than 200 passing yards. Tagovailoa has struggled to find consistency, so he should be considered a low-end QB2 for this week.

Dec 27 11:10am ET

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was benched during the final minutes of the Week 16 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders. He completed 17 of 22 passing attempts for 94 yards with one touchdown and zero interceptions before getting pulled. Tagovailoa was completing passes, but wasn't able to create any momentum on offense. Veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick came in and pulled off his FitzMagic. He was able to help secure the victory, but Tagovailoa has been named the starter for next week versus the Buffalo Bills. Tagovailoa will be a low-end QB2 for that matchup.

Dec 27 9:30am ET

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was named the team's starting quarterback for Week 17 following his benching in the comeback win over the Raiders. Tagovailoa completed 17 of 22 passes, though he averaged just 4.3 yards per attempt and threw for only 94 yards in an underwhelming effort, before giving way to Ryan Fitzpatrick, who led the team to victory. Head coach Brian Flores used a baseball analogy to describe the situation, saying that he'll go to the reliever out of the bullpen if he has to. Tagovailoa is an unappealing DFS option against the Bills in Week 17.

Dec 25 7:40pm ET

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa came back down to Earth last week, but managed the game well enough to pull off the victory. However, Tagovailoa should have more fantasy value versus the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 16. A defense that has allowed multiple touchdown passes in five straight games. Although, it should be noted that many of the Dolphins weapons on offense are banged up. It might be difficult for Tagovailoa to have success if his best options end up sitting out. He could be a possible streaming option, assuming the team is somewhat healthy.

Dec 20 10:40pm ET

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa didn't do much damage through the air during the Week 15 win over the New England Patriots. To be fair, Tagovailoa had limited weapons with most of his main receivers unable to suit up. He completed 20 of 26 passing attempts for 145 yards with zero touchdowns and one interception. Most of his fantasy value came from his three rushing attempts for nine yards and two touchdowns. Tagovailoa did what he could with limited weapons, but should bounce back nicely against the Las Vegas Raiders next week.

Dec 19 7:40pm ET

New England Patriots defensive end/linebacker Shilique Calhoun (knee) is back in the mix for Sunday's contest versus Miami, having been activated off of injured reserve Saturday. Calhoun has not played since Week 9 due to a knee injury, with his return giving the Patriots Defense yet another pass rusher at their disposal. In eight games this year, Calhoun has compiled a career-high 14 tackles and two sacks to go along with two quarterback hits and a pair of forced fumbles. Those fantasy managers planning to deploy the Patriots defense have yet another reason to stick with the group for what should be a favorable matchup Sunday against rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Dec 17 6:40pm ET

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa surpassed the 300-yard mark in a single game for the first time in his career last week. He looked fairly comfortable passing against a surprisingly decent pass defense in the Kansas City Chiefs. Sadly, Tagovailoa won't have great fantasy appeal heading into his Week 15 matchup with the New England Patriots. A defense that has allowed the third-fewest amount of fantasy points to quarterbacks this season. Tagovailoa should be considered a mid-range QB2 for this game.

Dolphins' QB Tua Tagovailoa scored an astounding 31.20 fantasy points in Sunday's Week 14 loss against the Chiefs. Tagovailoa threw for 316 yards on 28-of-48 with two touchdowns and one interception.

Dec 13 6:40pm ET

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was firing the ball through the air all game long against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 14. He completed 28 of 48 passing attempts for 316 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in the loss. He also added six rushing attempts for 24 yards and one touchdown on the ground. Tagovailoa was limited in terms of weapons in this one, but found a way to still throw for over 300 yards. It was an impressive outing by the rookie despite the close loss. He'll be a mid-range QB2 versus the New England Patriots next week.

Dec 11 9:30pm ET

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is coming off a fairly strong performance against the Cincinnati Bengals last week. He completed 26 of 39 passing attempts for 296 yards and one touchdown in the win. It wasn't exactly a dream game for fantasy owners, but Tagovailoa did throw for a career-high 296 yards, which is great to see. The rookie quarterback will have an intriguing matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 14. He'll be a high-end QB2 and a possible streaming option for this one.

From RotoBaller

Dec 11 7:30pm ET

Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu (hip) is questionable for Week 14 against the Dolphins. Mathieu popped up on the injury report on Friday and was able to get in a limited practice, so he has a chance to be active. The Honey Badger has been a top-15 defensive back in IDP leagues, racking up 43 tackles, seven passes defensed, five interceptions and a fumble recovery in 12 games played. He's an important piece of KC's secondary, so not having him around would be a boost to rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and Miami's passing attack. The Chiefs Defense should be a top-10 fantasy unit regardless of whether Mathieu plays against the rookie QB, but his presence certainly makes them more imposing.

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (thumb) was in danger of sitting out during the Week 13 matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals. Luckily, he played and performed well in this contest. He completed 26 of 39 passing attempts for 296 yards with one touchdown in the win. The first half was a struggle for Tagovailoa, but he was able to turn it around after that. He'll be a decent streaming option against the Kansas City Chiefs next week, which should be an interesting matchup.

Dec 6 11:50am ET

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (thumb) is officially active for the Week 13 contest against the Bengals. He's expected to be the starter over Ryan Fitzpatrick. Tua's the future in Miami, but this offense does play better with Fitzpatrick under center. His return lowers the fantasy ceiling for the Miami pass catchers, and even in a solid matchup, it's hard to see a reason for fantasy managers to treat Tagovailoa as more than a low-end QB2 play.

From RotoBaller

Dec 6 8:50am ET

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (thumb) is expected to be active and start against the Bengals in Week 13. Tagovailoa missed last week's contest after jamming his thumb against a helmet during practice, though he was back taking the first-team reps in the lead up to Sunday's game against Cincinnati. Tagovailoa is more game-manager than anything, as evidenced by his failure to hit the 250-yard passing mark in any of his starts, though he has thrown for multiple touchdowns in two of them. DeVante Parker and Mike Gesicki should remain in lineups, though their respective ceilings were probably higher with the gunslinging Ryan Fitzpatrick under center. Tagovailoa should be looked at as a low-end QB2 against the Bengals.
