2024 RTSports Outlook

Stroud had one of the best rookie seasons of all time for a quarterback. He was 11th overall in fantasy quarterback scoring despite missing two games and one of his top receivers (Tank Dell) for several weeks. Stroud just made plays on a weekly basis, having 20-plus fantasy points in eight of 15 games. He topped 4,000 passing yards and had 26 total touchdowns with just five interceptions. He led the league in passing yards per game and had the best interception percentage in football. And Stroud has room for improvement, having the second-worst bad throw percentage (19.9 percent). If he can shore up that area, things could get even better for him. Stroud is going to be an elite NFL quarterback for years to come, leading the Texans offense. Stroud has a great arm and is an accurate passer. He makes big plays at crucial times. Stroud does well in extending the play and making plays on the run. He has good athletic ability but is not much of a running quarterback. Stroud makes great decisions with the football and rarely forces a throw.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Stroud could be a top-five fantasy quarterback this season. He is a player on the rise and ready to be an elite fantasy quarterback for years to come. Last season was not a fluke. He will continue to get better, especially if the Texans surround him with more talent offensively. Stroud can throw for around 4,000 yards with 200-rushing yards and 35-plus scores.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Houston Texans QB C.J. Stroud blew away expectations during his rookie season in 2023 throwing for 4,108 yards with 23 TDs to just 5 INTs with an ADOT of 9.4 yards. Stroud won AFC Rookie of the Year en route to leading the Texans to a 9-6 record and a playoff win. Given the team's recent acquisition of WR Stefon Diggs, Stroud has no shortage of weapons around him with RB Joe Mixon, WR Nico Collins, WR Tank Dell, and TE Dalton Schultz. It's hard not to feel bullish about Stroud and the Texans this year and they're showing just how valuable a rookie contract is with the team they've amassed around their QB. With OC Bobby Slowik also returning, the Texans are poised to be one of the best offenses in the league. The only knock on Stroud for fantasy is that he rushed for 167 yards and 3 TDs, and we shouldn't expect much from him with his legs even though Stroud showed in college he is a more than capable runner. Draft all Texans players with confidence for 2024.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Kansas City Chiefs will square off against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Houston Texans will host the Baltimore Ravens on Christmas Day during the 2024 NFL season. For different reasons, all four teams will be interesting to monitor this year. Kansas City is aiming to be the first franchise to win three straight Super Bowls, Pittsburgh will be led by Russell Wilson or Justin Fields, Baltimore looks to get over the hump in search of a Lombardi Trophy, and Houston was one of last year's big surprise teams to contend in the playoffs. With no shortage of disappointing primetime matchups over the last few years, games featuring stars like Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, C.J. Stroud, T.J. Watt, and more on Christmas should be exciting. These two Christmas Day games will be streamed exclusively on Netflix.

Houston Texans Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil (knee) underwent successful arthroscopic knee surgery in Dallas and is expected to make a full and fast recovery after dealing with some swelling and tightness in his knee during the season, according to league sources. Tunsil had to have his knee drained a few times in 2023. The 29-year-old offensive tackle was on the injury report a lot last year due to his knee injury and was forced to miss three games with knee and groin issues. Perhaps Tunsil can be better in 2024 without any issues with his knee as he continues to protect the blind side of impressive young quarterback C.J. Stroud and an emerging Texans offense. Tunsil should be fully recovered by training camp at the end of the summer.

The Houston Texans exceeded everyone's expectations in 2023 when they went 10-7 to win the AFC South and win a playoff game under first-year head coach DeMeco Ryans and with rookie first-round quarterback C.J. Stroud. Ryans' defense has room for improvement, though, as they ranked 22nd in the league against the pass, giving up 234.1 yards per game while managing only 14 interceptions all year long. Second-year cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. led the team with five interceptions, but fellow cornerback Steven Nelson, who had four picks, is scheduled to become a free agent in March, as is slot cornerback Tavierre Thomas. If the Texans are going to repeat as AFC South champions in 2024, they are going to need to shore up the cornerback position, either through free agency or the draft.

Feb 19 8:20pm ET

There is buzz around the league that the Houston Texans could try to improve at the running back position in free agency this offseason to help second-year quarterback C.J. Stroud. If the Texans truly believe they are one player away on offense, they could look to add an exciting tailback like Saquon Barkley or Derrick Henry. Most of the team's options on a quality starting offensive line are under contract for multiple years. Both Devin Singletary, who served as the team's starting RB in 2023, and Dare Ogunbowale will be free agents next month. If they don't re-sign Singletary, Houston will surely be looking to add to their RB room after Dameon Pierce's highly disappointing sophomore season.

Houston Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud was named as the 2024 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year on Thursday. The 22-year-old No. 2 overall pick absolutely took the league by storm in his first year in the NFL while also being led by first-time play-caller Bobby Slowik. The former Ohio State star looked like a seasoned veteran and was cool under pressure all year, finishing a 63.9 completion percentage for 4,108 passing yards, 23 touchdowns and only five interceptions in 15 regular season games while also leading the Texans to a wild-card playoff win over the Browns. With some intriguing weapons around him in the backfield and in the passing game, Stroud will firmly be in the QB1 picture in fantasy heading into his sophomore season.

Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik has agreed to a new deal in Houston within the last few days that will include a significant raise, according to sources. Slowik impressed multiple NFL teams during the interview process for a head-coaching job this cycle, but he'll remain with the Texans for at least another year. He'll most certainly be a hot candidate again next offseason. The return of Slowik, one of the brighter offensive minds in the game right now, is great news for quarterback C.J. Stroud, who is the unanimous favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year. With Slowik calling the plays for the first time as a coach, he helped guide the Texans to a division title and a playoff win. Before making his decision to stay in Houston, Slowik interviewed for the head-coaching jobs with the Washington Commanders, Seattle Seahawks, Carolina Panthers, Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons.

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud struggled on the road in the team's 34-10 Divisional Round loss against the Baltimore Ravens. Stroud was not particularly efficient on Saturday, completing 19-of-33 passes for just 175 yards. The Ravens held the rookie in check, which resulted in him throwing zero touchdowns in a game for the fourth time this season. After a successful rookie campaign, Stroud's season will officially end. However, he has emerged as a top fantasy quarterback option and should be drafted pretty early in Superflex formats next season.

Jan 19 12:50am ET

Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik became the seventh person to interview for the Tennessee Titans' head-coaching position on Thursday. The Titans are looking for a new head coach after firing Mike Vrabel following six years with the organization. Slowik's contributions to rookie first-round quarterback C.J. Stroud in his first year as a play-caller has been a critical factor in the Texans being able to make the playoffs and advance to the Divisional Round. He was previously the offensive passing-game coordinator with the San Francisco 49ers for six seasons. Both Slowik and Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans started as defensive quality control coaches in San Fran. The Titans have already interviewed Bengals OC Brian Callahan, Giants OC Mike Kafka, Raiders interim head coach Antonio Pierce, Ravens DC Mike MacDonald, Cowboys DC Dan Quinn and Panthers OC Thomas Brown.

Jan 18 11:00pm ET

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud was spectacular in his first postseason start. But he might struggle in the Divisional Round against the Baltimore Ravens. Last week, Stroud threw for 274 yards and three touchdowns in a blowout victory over the Cleveland Browns. However, quarterbacks are only averaging 218.6 pass yards and 1.06 pass touchdowns per game against the Ravens' secondary this season. They have also allowed the third-fewest fantasy points to quarterbacks in 2023. Stroud only managed 242 pass yards with zero touchdowns back in Week 1 against this Baltimore defense, making him a risky option in the Divisional Round.

Jan 15 4:30pm ET

Texans' QB C.J. Stroud scored 25.80 fantasy points in Saturday's playoff win against the Browns. Stroud threw for 274 yards on 16-of-21 with three touchdowns. Stroud scored at least 25 fantasy points five times during the regular season.

Jan 13 8:10pm ET

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud was unstoppable in the team's 45-14 blowout win in the Wild-Card Round against the Cleveland Browns. Making the first postseason start of his career on Saturday, Stroud showed no playoff jitters as he completed 16-of-21 passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns. The rookie led Houston down the field for three first-half scores, including a 76-yard touchdown to Brevin Jordan early in the second quarter. Stroud will look to carry that momentum in the Divisional Round next week.

From RotoBaller

Jan 11 8:20pm ET

Houston Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud will make his postseason debut against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday. Stroud will enter the playoffs following a spectacular rookie season in which he threw for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns, and five interceptions. But he'll draw a tough matchup in the first round of the playoffs. The Browns have given up the fourth-fewest fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks this season, which makes Stroud a risky play in daily fantasy sports (DFS) contests. The Browns have also only allowed two quarterbacks to throw for over 250 pass yards and two touchdowns over the past 10 weeks.

From RotoBaller

Jan 11 4:20pm ET

The Cleveland Browns defense turned in an excellent regular season. They allowed the second-fewest passing yards in the league while finishing sixth with 49 sacks and third with 18 interceptions. They will head on the road to face off against the Houston Texans in the first round of the NFL playoffs on Saturday. Things will be much different than when the Browns beat Houston 36-22 in Week 16 because star rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud missed that game with a concussion. Houston allowed just the 26th-most fantasy points per game to defenses during the regular season. That being said, Cleveland's defense has been elite all season and could make life tough for the rookie. Treat the Browns as a top-five fantasy defense in DFS contests this weekend.

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud led a key fourth-quarter drive to secure a playoff berth in the team's 23-19 win over the Indianapolis Colts. Stroud was almost perfect on Saturday, completing 20-of-26 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns. The rookie started the game on fire after connecting with Nico Collins for a 75-yard touchdown on Houston's first offensive snap. He then led a 12-play, 73-yard drive late in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. Stroud will look to carry that momentum into the playoffs next week.

From RotoBaller

Jan 5 3:40pm ET

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud is looking to carry his team to the playoffs in Week 18 against the Indianapolis Colts. Stroud is coming off a modest performance, throwing for just 213 yards and one touchdown in his first game back from a concussion. But a better game could be in store for the 22-year-old rookie. In Week 2, he threw for 384 yards and two touchdowns en route to a 21.5-point fantasy day against this Colts' secondary. With many star quarterbacks sitting out this weekend, Stroud is a strong option in Week 18.

Jan 1 10:30am ET

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud returned from his two-game absence against the Tennessee Titans in Week 17, completing 24 of 32 passes for 213 yards, one touchdown, and zero interceptions. He also took one sack and added four rushing yards. While the rookie didn't have a huge game in this outing, he played turnover-free football while mounting six scoring drives and leading Houston to a divisional win late in the season. Fantasy managers should view him as a low-end QB1 option against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 18.

Dec 29 7:00pm ET

Houston Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud (concussion) was able to get through his second straight full practice session on Friday. The rookie quarterback cleared the league's concussion protocol on Thursday. Fantasy managers should expect Stroud to be out there for the Week 17 matchup against the Tennessee Titans. The Texans still have a chance at the postseason, so the expectation is that they will continue to start Stroud. The Texans are finally getting healthy at wide receiver, so Stroud should be able to hold low-end QB1 value for this weekend.

From RotoBaller

Dec 28 3:30pm ET

Houston Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud (concussion) has cleared the league's concussion protocol and will speak with the media on Thursday after practicing for the second straight day. Stroud suffered a concussion in Week 14 and has missed the last two games, but he's primed to return as the starter under center in Week 17 against the Tennessee Titans. Veteran Case Keenum made a second straight start in the Week 16 loss to the Cleveland Browns last Sunday but played poorly and was benched in favor of Davis Mills in the second half. Stroud has been fantastic in his first NFL season in his first 13 games, completing 62.4% of his 441 pass attempts for 3,631 yards, 20 touchdowns and only five interceptions. The first-rounder will be back in play as a low-end QB1 for fantasy managers during championship week.

From RotoBaller

Dec 27 12:10pm ET

Houston Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud (concussion), who remains in the league's concussion protocol, is expected to practice on Wednesday. Head coach DeMeco Ryans said on Sunday that Stroud had been in team meetings on Friday. "He's definitely making progress," Ryans said. The 22-year-old second overall pick has not played since suffering a concussion in the Week 14 loss to the New York Jets, but he will have a shot at returning in Week 17 this Sunday against the Tennessee Titans if he's able to clear the NFL's concussion protocol and practice this week. Veteran Case Keenum fell apart in Sunday's loss to the Cleveland Browns and was replaced by Davis Mills. If Stroud is forced to miss a third straight game, we'd expect the Texans to give Mills his first start of 2023.

From RotoBaller

Dec 24 8:10am ET

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud (concussion), who has already been ruled out for this Sunday's game versus the Cleveland Browns, has "begun to make some progress" and could return in Week 17, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Stroud has been sidelined since the waning minutes of Week 14, putting a pause on his Rookie of the Year campaign. Through 13 games, Stroud had completed 62.4 percent of his passes for 3,631 yards, 20 touchdowns, and just five interceptions, all while adding an extra 143 yards and three scores on the ground. As soon as he returns to the fold, fantasy managers should view him as a steady QB1 option.
