2020 RTSports Outlook

Mack had his best season to date, hitting the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career. He had nearly 1,200 total yards and even missed two games because of injury. He was just 23 rd overall in fan-tasy running back scoring, though, mainly because of a lack of receptions. Mack had just 14 receptions all last season. Mack had three 100-yard rushing games and finished the season strong, scoring touch-downs thee of his last four games. He will continue to start for the Colts, topping 1,000 total yards two straight seasons. Mack is tough to bring down with the ball in his hands. He has good size and strength. Mack has pretty good moves in space. He lacks a little big-play ability and hasn't been a factor in the passing game in three seasons.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Mack can improve on last year. He probably still isn't a No. 1 fantasy back, though, serving more as a No. 2. He'll be consistent but not off the charts. Mack can get around 1,300 total yards, double-digit scores and 25 receptions.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Indianapolis Colts running back Marlon Mack was one of the players affected most by the 2020 NFL draft. Mack operated as Indy's lead running back over much of the past two seasons but saw his role ripped away from him when the Colts traded up in the second round to draft Wisconsin tailback Jonathan Taylor. Mack is coming off a career year which saw him rack up 1,091 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 247 rushes in 14 games played. While Mack may be able to fend off Taylor in the early portions of the season, the Colts didn't sink a second-round pick into Taylor without the intention of using him. To further make matters worse for Mack, Nyheim Hines is still around and expected to soak up a majority of the pass-down work. Mack enters the 2020 season as a late-round flier who will need an injury in front of him to be fantasy relevant.

Indianapolis Colts RB Jonathan Taylor said Tuesday, June 16, he isn't concerned about splitting time with RB Marlon Mack in 2020. 'You don't count the reps, you make the reps count,' Taylor said.

Fantasy Spin: Taylor was somewhat of a surprise pick by the Colts in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Mack rushed for 1,091 yards in 2019 while adding 82 receiving yards and scoring eight total rushing touchdowns. Taylor is expected to fill the pass-catching role and will certainly be a viable fantasy option in the Philip Rivers-led offense. Consider Taylor an RB2 in PPR leagues and RB3 in standard formats, with those roles being reversed for Mack.

Indianapolis Colts RB Marlon Mack ranked fourth in the league with 67 first downs rushing in 2019.

From TheHuddle

Jun 4 2:50pm ET

Indianapolis Colts running back Marlon Mack was the team's running game in 2019, which is why his broken hand in the second half of the season coincided with their late-season descent. He broke 15 mph on 51 runs (fourth-most among running backs) and had 28 runs of 10-plus yards. While Mack was an underrated explosive runner last year, his fantasy stock took a major hit when the Colts drafted rookie Jonathan Taylor in April. Mack could see the starting nod early in the season because of his veteran status, but Taylor is fully expected to take over this backfield at some point in 2020. The 24-year-old Mack can still make his mark with fewer touches because of his explosiveness, but he's expected to mainly be a flex option this year.

Indianapolis Colts RB Marlon Mack has inherent respect as the starter, according to head coach Frank Reich. 'I see it as a 1-1 (punch),' Reich said, referring to Mack and second-round pick RB Jonathan Taylor. 'The way the league has gone and the way roleplaying has been elevated in our league, it's made it prominent. We used to say in San Diego that when we had Danny Woodhead. He was not our starter, he was our 'role-playing' starter. He played such a significant role. He had 80 catches in a year. You look at a guy like Nyheim Hines. We talk about Marlon and Jonathan, but what about Nyheim? He's such a good third-down back that he'll play a prominent (role). In some ways, (Hines) is a starter. He's a role-playing starter.'

Fantasy Spin: It sounds to be a true committee in Indy with Mack holding RB2 status in fantasy and Nyheim Hines an RB3 in PPR. Taylor could play a larger role, but he'll open draft season as an RB4 or RB5 handcuff.

From TheHuddle

Jun 1 4:10pm ET

Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich discussed whether running back Marlon Mack should have a lead on retaining the starting running back spot over rookie Jonathan Taylor in 2020. "Theres definitely inherent respect for the starter returning. And thats the way I see this.I see it as a 1-1 (punch)," Reich said. Mack and Taylor will form a one-one punch, but the Colts also foresee a big role for pass-catching back Nyheim Hines, so this could be a complicated backfield for fantasy owners to navigate. Reich mentioned Hines as a "role-playing starter." Even though Mack might be the nominal "starter" in Week 1, everyone expects Taylor to eventually take the lead in this backfield, making Mack more of an RB3/flex in the long run in 2020.

From RotoBaller

May 23 1:23pm ET

Indianapolis Colts RB Marlon Mack tied for third in the league with nine rushes of 20 yards or more in the 2019 season.

Fantasy Spin: Those big gains helped Mack to his first 1,000-yard rushing season (1,091) and a No. 17 ranking among fantasy running backs. Mack, however, hit a career low with 14 receptions, and with Indy spending a second-round pick on Wisconsin back Jonathan Taylor, Mack should be valued as a RB3 at best.

From TheHuddle

May 11 1:43pm ET

Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni is looking at the tandem of RBs Marlon Mack and rookie Jonathan Taylor as a '1-1 punch' for the team to utilize.

Fantasy Spin: Mack, who is coming off his first career 1,000-yard season, will lose value and touches with Taylor on board. However, with a different offseason routine this year, it could lead to Mack seeing a heavier dose between the backs earlier in the year as Taylor picks up the system. Due to the time share, both backs' fantasy value suffers. Consider both RB3s entering draft season, while Taylor has higher upside -- especially in dynasty formats.

From TheHuddle

May 2 1:43pm ET

Indianapolis Colts RB Jonathan Taylor was one draft analyst's favorite picks of Round 2, and that analyst says Taylor's addition will allow the Colts to play 'bully ball' with Taylor and Marlon Mack sharing the load to wear down opposing defenses.

Fantasy Spin: Taylor averaged 309 rushing attempts per season over the last three years at Wisconsin while Mack has seen his rushing attempts go from 93 as a rookie in 2017 to a team-leading 247 a year ago. Definitely expect a timeshare with two capable backs, but look for Taylor to be the lead back from Day 1 and produce as a RB2. Mack, meanwhile, slides down to the low-end RB3 range.

From TheHuddle

Apr 24 8:20pm ET

The Indianapolis Colts decided to trade up to the No. 41 pick in order to draft Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor. This is an interesting move by the Colts to trade up for a running back with Marlon Mack still under contract for another season. Taylor rushed for 2,003 yards on 320 attempts with 21 touchdowns for Wisconsin in 2019. Taylor is arguably the best running back in the draft class, but seems like an odd fit for Indy. The Cleveland Browns move down to No. 44 from this trade, but the Colts clearly weren't willing to wait in order to draft Taylor. It'll be interesting to see how Taylor performs with Mack alongside him in 2020.

Indianapolis Colts RB Marlon Mack ran for 591 yards before contact and 500 yards after contact in 2019 - making him one of only eight players who amassed at least 500 yards before and after contact.

Indianapolis Colts RB Marlon Mack managed only three catches (four targets) for 14 yards in his final six games after producing 11 catches (13 targets) for 68 yards in his first eight outings.

Feb 23 11:40pm ET

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay said on Sunday that the team isn't pursuing a long-term contract extension with running back Marlon Mack currently. It doesn't mean that it's not on the table or that the Colts don't want to keep Mack around for the long-term, but it's not a pressing issue. The 23-year-old (24 next month) is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2020 season. He's been the starter the last two years and had 247 carries for 1,091 yards and eight touchdowns in 2019. However, he's also missed eight games the last two seasons, so Indy might be hesitant in thinking he'll continue to be a lead back for years to come. Mack does have a strong offensive line in front of him, but he'll be more of a low-end RB1/high-end RB2 going into the final year of his contract in 2020.

From RotoBaller

Feb 23 8:03pm ET

Indianapolis Colts RB Marlon Mack is not in line for a contract extension at this time. '(Marlon), we love him, but we love the other two guys. We want him back and he wants to be back, really. There were some mis-reports that we were pursuing an extension there. That's not the case. I don't know where those came from,' team owner Jim Irsay said Sunday, Feb. 23.
