49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk returns to practice; Deebo Samuel sits out

Mon Sep 25 6:28pm ET
Field Level Media

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk was back at practice on Monday after being inactive for the 49ers' home victory over the New York Giants last Thursday night, but fellow star wide receiver Deebo Samuel did not practice.

Aiyuk suffered a shoulder injury in Week 2 on his first catch against the Los Angeles Rams. He finished with 43 yards in a 30-23 road victory.

In Week 1, Aiyuk caught eight passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns at Pittsburgh in the 49ers' 30-7 victory.

Aiyuk, 25, was a first-round pick (25th overall) in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Arizona State.

Samuel (ribs) was held out of Monday's on-field workouts after playing a big role in the win over the Giants.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said on Friday the minor injury wasn't expected to keep Samuel out too long.

"(He's) pretty sore, so it'll be day-to-day," Shanahan said.

Samuel was hurt in the fourth quarter following a 19-yard reception.

"I actually fell on the ball and I thought it was my ribs," Samuel said after the game. "I think the wind got knocked out of me. But after going in the tent, everything checked out fine and I was good."

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw, listed day-to-day with an ankle injury, did not practice on Monday.

The 49ers (3-0) host the Arizona Cardinals (1-2) Sunday.

Brandon Aiyuk Sep 25 6:40pm ET
Brandon Aiyuk

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk (shoulder) was seen participating in practice on Monday. The Niners aren't required to release an official injury report this week until Wednesday, but it's a good sign that Aiyuk is back on the practice field after he was held out of last Thursday night's win over the New York Giants due to a shoulder injury he suffered in Week 2. We'll have a better idea of whether he has a shot at returning in Week 4 against the Arizona Cardinals later in the week after the team holds a few more practices. In the first two games of the year, Aiyuk caught 11 of his 14 targets for 172 yards and two touchdowns and will remain a big part of San Fran's passing attack when he's healthy.

David Montgomery Sep 25 6:30pm ET
David Montgomery

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery (thigh) was listed as a limited practice participant on the team's estimated injury report on Monday after they went through a walkthrough. Montgomery didn't play in the Week 3 win over the Atlanta Falcons, but it seems as though he'll have a chance to return after missing just one game for a Week 4 matchup against the division-rival Green Bay Packers this Thursday night. In the 26-year-old's absence on Sunday, rookie Jahmyr Gibbs saw 17 carries for 80 yards, with Craig Reynolds and Zonovan Knight backing him up. Montgomery's return would cap the upside of Gibbs, who has so far been a disappointment for fantasy managers expecting RB1 upside in his first NFL season.

Deebo Samuel Sep 25 6:30pm ET
Deebo Samuel

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel (ribs) was not seen at the team's practice on Monday. Samuel took a hard shot to his ribs in last Thursday night's blowout victory over the New York Giants, so his status for Week 4 against the Arizona Cardinals is somewhat in question. The 49ers won't release their first official injury report for the week until Wednesday, so we suggest fantasy managers check back then for an update. The 27-year-old could miss more practice time this week, but it remains to be seen if he's truly in danger of missing Sunday's game. With Brandon Aiyuk (shoulder) missing last Thursday's game, Deebo went off for six catches (12 targets), 129 yards and his first touchdown of 2023.

Jaylen Waddle Sep 25 6:20pm ET
Jaylen Waddle

Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said that wide receiver Jaylen Waddle (concussion) remains in the league's concussion protocol on Monday. Waddle was ruled out for Miami's 70-20 record-setting win over the Denver Broncos in Week 3 on Sunday, but it sounds as though he's making progress and could have a chance to play in Week 4 against the division-rival Buffalo Bills. We'll keep a close eye on Waddle's practice status this week and we'll have a better idea of whether he has a shot to return this weekend later in the week. As long as Waddle clears the concussion protocol and is available to play, he'll be a must-star in all fantasy lineups despite a tough matchup with Buffalo's defense.

Christian Watson Sep 25 6:20pm ET
Christian Watson

The Green Bay Packers didn't have an official practice on Monday, but they listed wide receiver Christian Watson (hamstring) as a non-participant on their estimated injury report after he missed his third straight game to open the year in Week 3. Watson has put in some limited practices in recent weeks, though, giving the impression that he's on the cusp of making his 2023 debut. However, on a short week, the Packers could decide to hold him out yet again this Thursday night against the Detroit Lions. If the 24-year-old pass-catcher does suit up this week, he'll be in danger of having his snaps limited in his first game of the year. Romeo Doubs has been the team's most productive wideout through three weeks without Watson in the fold, but rookies Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks have also made positive impacts.

Joe Burrow Sep 25 6:10pm ET
Joe Burrow

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (calf) went through a workout on Monday morning and there is optimism that he will play and that his status for Monday night's game against the Los Angeles Rams is trending in the right direction, according to sources. Burrow is campaigning with the coaching staff and trainers to play, but his status remains uncertain. Burrow's final status for Week 3 will become official soon. If the 26-year-old is inactive, backup Jake Browning would start for the Bengals, which would be a big downgrade for all of the team's offensive skill players in terms of fantasy upside. Burrow missed all of training camp and the preseason because of his calf injury, and it's led to a slow start for the entire Bengals offense.

Aaron Jones

Green Bay Packers RB Aaron Jones (hamstring) was limited during practice Monday, Sept. 25. The Packers did not hold a practice Monday, so this is an estimation.

Fantasy Spin: Jones has missed the last two games but could be a game-time decision this week, so fantasy players will need to monitor the situation. He is a starting option in all leagues when healthy.

David Montgomery Sep 25 4:43pm ET
David Montgomery

Detroit Lions RB David Montgomery (thigh) was limited during practice Monday, Sept. 25. The Lions did not hold a practice Monday, so this is an estimation.

Fantasy Spin: Montgomery was not able to play in Week 3 and likely will be at least questionable on a short week. Fantasy players can keep an eye on the situation, but he may only be a flex option in leagues if he is active for the game.

Mike Williams Sep 25 4:13pm ET
Mike Williams

Dynasty | Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams suffered a torn ACL in Sunday's win against Minnesota and will miss the rest of the season. Dynasty Analysis: Williams has seemingly always battled a host of nagging injuries but this one is pretty significant. He'll turn 29 next month and this injury virtually guarantees his dynasty value of WR39 has hit its apex and will start to fall precipitously. Williams will need surgery and hopefully produce a couple more seasons of solid play but this is tough one to swallow.

Chris Olave Sep 25 3:10pm ET
Chris Olave

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Chris Olave showed again that he is a WR1 this season, hauling in eight receptions on 11 targets for 104 yards. It was Olave's third straight double-digit target game. With quarterback Derek Carr (shoulder) likely to miss some time, Olave's fantasy value should remain fairly similar with Jameis Winston under center. Winston supported multiple fantasy-relevant receivers during his time in Tampa Bay and the Saints' offensive scheme likely won't change at all if Carr does miss time. Keep utilizing Olave as a top-tier receiver.

Michael Thomas Sep 25 3:10pm ET
Michael Thomas

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas drew another nine targets in the Week 3 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Thomas has consistently drawn targets in the short field, catching six passes for 50 yards this week. Every week, he has had between eight and nine targets, five to seven receptions, and between 50-61 yards. Thomas has failed to find the end zone yet this season. He is a reliable flex option with a safe floor in PPR leagues, but has a limited ceiling.

Aaron Jones Sep 25 3:00pm ET
Aaron Jones

Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones (hamstring) missed the game against the New Orleans Saints in Week 3, as he did the Week 2 game against the Atlanta Falcons. However, head coach Matt LaFleur said he would have been a limited participant in practice on Monday if the team took the field. The Packers play on Thursday Night Football against the NFC North rival Detroit Lions, and it sounds like he has a shot to suit up for the first time since Week 1. If he's active, he's virtually a must-start option despite any workload management concerns. AJ Dillon has been ineffective in his increased role. Since the game is on Thursday, fantasy managers will know his status in the next few days and should be ready to make the proper adjustment to fantasy lineups.
