Chiefs add Carson Wentz as backup QB

Tue Apr 2 2:40am ET
Field Level Media

Carson Wentz is headed to his fifth team in as many years, as the veteran quarterback agreed to a one-year deal to back up Patrick Mahomes with the Kansas City Chiefs, multiple media outlets reported Monday night.

Wentz, 31, takes the spot previously occupied by Blaine Gabbert, who is currently a free agent.

Selected second overall by the Eagles in the 2016 draft out of North Dakota State, Wentz spent five years in Philadelphia. He made the Pro Bowl in 2017 but missed the postseason that year due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament, and the Eagles went on to win the Super Bowl with Nick Foles at quarterback.

After producing a 35-32-1 record as Philadelphia's starter, went on to one-year stints as a starter with the Indianapolis Colts in 2021 (9-8 record) and the Washington Commanders in 2022 (2-5 record).

Last year, he was unsigned until midseason before landing with the Los Angeles Rams. Wentz saw his only action of the year when he started the regular-season finale in place of Matthew Stafford as the Rams and the San Francisco 49ers rested players ahead of the postseason. Los Angeles emerged with a 21-20 win. Wentz threw for 163 yards and two touchdowns, and he was intercepted once.

In eight NFL seasons, Wentz owns a 47-45-1 mark as a starter. He has completed 62.7 percent of his passes for 22,292 yards and 153 TDs with 67 interceptions.

The Chiefs have two other quarterbacks under contract, both 26 years old: Chris Oladokun, who has yet to make his NFL debut; and Ian Book, whose lone NFL appearance was a start (and loss) for the New Orleans Saints in 2021.

Carson Wentz

Free-agent quarterback Carson Wentz signed an undisclosed deal one-year with the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, according to sources. Wentz, the former second overall pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016 out of North Dakota State will head to the Super Bowl-champion Chiefs after spending the 2023 season with the Los Angeles Rams, where he played in two games (one start) while going 17-for-24 for 163 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. The 31-year-old figures to be Patrick Mahomes' primary backup heading into training camp this summer, with Chris Oladokun and Ian Book also in KC's QB room. Wentz made his lone Pro Bowl in 2017 and was looking like Philly's QB of the future until injuries flipped the script. He never was able to recover after Nick Foles and the Eagles won a Super Bowl without him.

Michael Penix Jr. Apr 1 9:20pm ET
Michael Penix Jr.

Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. had dinner with the New York Giants in Seattle after his pro day and then had a private workout with the Minnesota Vikings in Seattle, according to sources. According to multiple sources, Penix will have top-30 official visits with the Denver Broncos, Atlanta Falcons, Las Vegas Raiders and Washington Commanders. The 23-year-old signal-called could sneak into the first round in April's NFL draft after impressing with a sub-4.6-second 40-yard dash during his pro day last week. Penix didn't run much in college after suffering two torn ACLs, but the fact that he still has game-changing speed will make him more attractive to NFL clubs. Injury concerns aside, Penix has become more interesting for teams that lose out on the top tier of QBs in this year's draft.

Rashee Rice Apr 1 4:50pm ET
Rashee Rice

It was reported by the Dallas Morning News on Saturday that police were looking for Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice following a major accident on Saturday in Dallas, Texas. A car involved in the accident was believed to be registered to or leased to Rice, and the occupants of two cars ran from the scene. On Monday, Rice's attorney Royce West released a statement saying "Rashee is cooperating with local authorities and will take all necessary steps to address this situation responsibly." As of now, there is still uncertainty about what happened and what Rice's involvement was in the situation, so it's too early to know if the 23-year-old will face discipline from the law and the NFL. This will be an ongoing development to monitor.

Reed Blankenship Apr 1 4:30pm ET
Reed Blankenship

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed safety Reed Blankenship to a one-year contract extension, according to NFL insider Mike Garafolo. The new deal pays him a fully guaranteed $3.94 million over the next two years and has an additional $1.38 million available in playing time and Pro Bowl incentives. Blankenship was undrafted out of Middle Tennessee State University in 2022, and he has exceeded expectations in Philadelphia. In career 25 games (19 starts), the 25-year-old has racked up 147 tackles (99 solo), four interceptions, and 13 passes defended. After the release of former All-Pro safety Kevin Byard, Blankenship is slated to start alongside C.J. Gardner-Johnson for the Eagles in 2024.

Jeff Driskel Apr 1 4:20pm ET
Jeff Driskel

Veteran free-agent quarterback Jeff Driskel is signing with the Washington Commanders, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. This will be the eighth team the 30-year-old will have been with during his career, and he's likely going to be utilized as a training camp arm more than anything else. Originally picked in the sixth round by the San Francisco 49ers out of Louisiana Tech in 2016, Driskel has completed 58.6% of his passes for 2,394 yards 16 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in 23 career games. He's added 417 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. With Washington almost certainly going to select a quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in this month's draft and Marcus Mariota on the roster, it's tough to see Driskel sticking around with the organization into the 2024 regular season.

Cameron Sutton Apr 1 2:40pm ET
Cameron Sutton

Free-agent cornerback Cameron Sutton, who has been wanted for weeks by police in Florida for his alleged involvement in a domestic-violence case, turned himself in on Sunday. Police had been unable to locate Sutton since March 7, when an arrest warrant was issued for him. His initial arrest warrant charged him with a felony, but prosecutors said on Monday that he was being formally charged with misdemeanor battery, which carries a maximum one-year jail sentence. Sutton was released from jail on Monday on his own recognizance. The 29-year-old signed a three-year, $33 million deal with the Detroit Lions last year but was released by the team on March 21, the day after the team found out about the warrant for his arrest.

Jeremy McNichols Apr 1 2:10pm ET
Jeremy McNichols

The Washington Commanders signed free-agent running back Jeremy McNichols to an undisclosed deal on Monday. McNichols spent most of last year on the San Francisco 49ers' practice squad but did play a special teams role in three regular-season games. The former fifth-round pick (162nd overall) by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2017 out of Boise State will serve as running back depth in Washington behind Austin Ekeler, Brian Robinson Jr. and Chris Rodriguez Jr. There's a good chance the 28-year-old will be on the team's practice squad to begin the 2024 regular season if he isn't cut after training camp and the preseason. In his six NFL seasons with four different teams, McNichols has only 90 carries for 364 yards and one rushing touchdown, adding 40 receptions for 295 yards and an additional score in 37 games (zero starts).

Rashee Rice

Dynasty | Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice is wanted by police in connection with a traffic accident. Dynasty Analysis: The Chiefs will undoubtedly spend Easter Sunday gathering details but this clearly isn't good. Rice was reportedly involved in a street race that resulted in a six-car pileup. Details are still emerging, including a list of possible injuries. What is known is that a car either owned or leased by Rice was involved and he's wanted by police for questioning. Stay tuned.

Tyler Johnson Mar 31 1:20pm ET
Tyler Johnson

The Los Angeles Rams agreed to an undisclosed deal to re-sign wide receiver Tyler Johnson on Saturday. Johnson was with the team's practice squad all year but was active in Week 18 and caught two of his three targets for eight yards and a touchdown against the San Francisco 49ers. The former fifth-round pick (161st overall) in 2020 out of Minnesota by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has 50 career catches on 75 targets for 537 yards and three touchdowns in 34 games (six starts) in his four seasons in the NFL with the Rams, Buccaneers and Houston Texans. The 25-year-old will return to Los Angeles in 2024 and will likely be on the practice squad again while providing depth at the position behind Cooper Kupp, Puka Nacua, Demarcus Robinson, Tutu Atwell and Ben Skowronek.

Rashee Rice Mar 31 1:10pm ET
Rashee Rice

Police are searching for Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice in their investigation of a major accident on Saturday in Dallas, according to the Dallas Morning News. The Dallas Morning News reported that a vehicle believed to be registered to or leased to Rice was involved in a crash in northeast Dallas at around 6:20 pm local time on Saturday. A police spokeswoman said a driver in a Chevrolet Corvette and a driver in a Lamborghini were speeding and both lost control of their vehicles, with the Lamborghini hitting the median wall and causing "a chain reaction collision involving four other vehicles." The occupants of the Lamborghini and Corvette ran from the crash site. It's unclear if Rice is facing charges, and his level of involvement in the accident is also unclear, but we'll continue to monitor the developing situation.

Ezekiel Elliott Mar 30 6:53pm ET
Ezekiel Elliott

Free-agent RB Ezekiel Elliott (Patriots) and the Dallas Cowboys have mutual interest in getting a deal done, according to sources Saturday, March 30.

Fantasy Spin: A deal hasn't been reached yet, but there seems to be interest. A reunion with Dallas would give Elliott fringe RB2 value with Rico Dowdle spelling him as a change-of-pace back.

From TheHuddle

Ezekiel Elliott Mar 30 6:40pm ET
Ezekiel Elliott

Free-agent running back Ezekiel Elliott and the Dallas Cowboys may be headed toward a reunion. Elliott played for the New England Patriots during the 2023 NFL season, the only season of his nine-year career that he was not a member of the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas has a need at the running back position after they let Tony Pollard leave via free-agency, making Elliott a good fit to return to the team. Elliott ran for 642 yards and three touchdowns for the Pats last season while splitting the backfield with Rhamondre Stevenson. Depending on whether Dallas addresses the RB position in the NFL draft, Elliott would immediately have high-end RB3/flex value if he lands with his former team.

Denver Broncos WR Josh Reynolds' two-year deal that is worth up to $14 million includes a $9 million base value, a $2 million signing bonus and $15,000 per-game roster bonus in 2024 and $30,000 per-game roster bonus in 2025, plus escalator clauses. Base salaries are $2.245 million (guaranteed) and $3.99 million, respectively, over the two years of the deal.

Jimmy Graham Mar 30 12:30pm ET
Jimmy Graham

Free-agent tight end Jimmy Graham wrote on his Instagram account that he's "unsure of what the future holds" after "things ended rather quickly after the season." The 37-year-old returned to the New Orleans Saints last year and played in the NFL after sitting out in 2022 and found the end zone four times on his six catches on the season. Graham only racked up 39 receiving yards in 13 games (two starts). The five-time Pro Bowler was one of the best at his position in his prime with the Saints and Seattle Seahawks earlier in his career, but the 13-year veteran is nearing the end and could officially hang up his cleats this offseason if he doesn't get picked up by another team. If this is the end for Graham, he'd finish his successful NFL career with 719 career catches (1,115 targets) for 8,545 receiving yards and 89 touchdowns in 197 career regular-season games.

Jerry Jeudy Mar 30 3:13am ET
Jerry Jeudy

Dynasty | The Broncos have signed wide receiver Josh Reynolds. Dynasty Analysis: At the moment, this looks like a sneaky good signing for dynasty managers and the Broncos as Reynolds should help vacate the spot left by the departure of Jerry Jeudy. Reynolds had an admirable 40/608/5 for Detroit last season and has proven to be pretty capable when given a chance. While the receiver depth chart in Denver is far from settled, Reynolds is again on the dynasty radar.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Raheem Mostert Mar 30 3:13am ET
Raheem Mostert

Dynasty | The Dolphins have extended the contract of Raheem Mostert. Dynasty Analysis: The contract will conceivably keep Mostert in Miami beyond the 2024 season, which would have been the last on his contract. Mostert was crazy efficient last season with career highs of 1,012 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns. While those numbers are going to be nearly impossible to replicate with a healthy De'Von Achane in the fold, Mostert has proven to be very effective when healthy. He looks a prime player to trade away in a dynasty league but strictly because of his age and durability issues. In short, dynasty managers are going to need to really make sure they're a contender if they hold on to him as his value is sure to drop soon.
