Cardinals add running back depth with Morris, Zenner

Wed Oct 23 1:57pm ET

Players: Alfred Morris, David Johnson, Zach Zenner, D.J. Foster, Chase Edmonds

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) The Arizona Cardinals have signed Alfred Morris and Zach Zenner to add depth at the banged-up running back position.

The 5-foot-10, 222-pound Morris has played in 104 career games over seven years and run for 5,931 yards and 34 touchdowns.

Morris ran for more than 1,000 yards in each of his first three seasons but the 30-year-old's production has declined in recent years. He ran for 428 yards in 12 games last season for San Francisco.

The 5-11, 228-pound Zenner was recently released by the New Orleans Saints after appearing in one game. He has 686 career rushing yards over five seasons.

Arizona's Chase Edmonds had a career-high 126 yards rushing in Sunday's win over the New York Giants. But the Cardinals' other running backs - David Johnson (ankle) and D.J. Foster (hamstring) - are dealing with injuries.

Sterling Shepard Oct 23 3:13pm ET

New York Giants WR Sterling Shepard (concussion) was limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Fantasy Spin: Shepard is coming off his second concussion of the season, so the team will be cautious with him. Fantasy players will know more about his status later in the week. Shepard can be a flex option if he is cleared to play.

From TheHuddle

Saquon Barkley Oct 23 3:13pm ET

New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley (ankle) was limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Fantasy Spin: Barkley probably will be limited over the next several weeks because of his ankle but should be available to play in Week 8. He is a must-start option in all leagues.

Baker Mayfield Oct 23 3:13pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield (hip) said Wednesday, Oct. 23, his injured hip feels good and he's good to go for the Week 7 game against the New England Patriots Sunday, Oct. 27.

Fantasy Spin: Mayfield never really seemed to be at risk of missing time but it's reassuring he'll be able to get in a week of practices following the team's Week 7 bye. Unfortunately, he has the league's toughest matchup this week against the New England Patriots and should be benched in all formats.

From TheHuddle

Saquon Barkley Oct 23 3:10pm ET

New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley's matchup on Sunday is tougher than it looks at first glance. On the season, the Lions allow the fifth-most fantasy points to running backs; however, a lot of that has to do with an earlier injury to defensive tackle Damon Harrison. Over the last three games, the Lions held the Chiefs running backs to 21 points and the Packers running backs to 23 points, before breaking against Dalvin Cook last week. With the Lions trading their defensive captain, safety Quandre Diggs, and star cornerback Darius Slay expected to miss this game, the Giants may go to a pass-heavy approach, and they haven't been including Barkley in the passing game as much as they did last year. Barkley is still an elite play in season-long leagues, but this might not be the blow-up spot that everybody expects.

Case Keenum Oct 23 2:53pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Case Keenum (foot, shoulder) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23, and is not on the injury report for Week 8.

Fantasy Spin: Keenum is facing another tough defense this week and probably should be avoided in most fantasy leagues.

From TheHuddle

Josh Norman Oct 23 2:53pm ET

Washington Redskins S Deshazor Everett (ankle), LB Josh Harvey-Clemons (hamstring) and OG Wes Martin (chest) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23, and have been ruled out for Week 8. CB Josh Norman (hand, thigh) and FS Montae Nicholson (ankle) missed practice and are listed as questionable. WR Steven Sims (toe) was limited during practice and is listed as questionable. LB Ryan Kerrigan (elbow) fully participated in practice and is not on the injury report.

From TheHuddle

Adam Thielen Oct 23 2:50pm ET

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen (hamstring) has been ruled out of his team's Thursday night game against Washington. Thielen injured his hamstring while making a diving touchdown catch during Week 7. There was some optimism that Thielen would be able to suit up on Thursday but the team instead will pay it safe with their star receiver. Considering how poorly Washington has played this season, the Vikings can probably manage without him. Rookie wideout Olabisi Johnson will step in as the team's No. 2 receiver behind Stefon Diggs. Johnson makes for an interesting dart throw in DFS tournaments on Thursday evening. Thielen's fantasy owners can tentatively expect him back for his Week 9 road showdown against the Kansas City Chiefs.

From RotoBaller

Chris Thompson Oct 23 2:43pm ET

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson (toe) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23, and has been ruled out for Week 8.

Fantasy Spin: Wendell Smallwood will continue to fill in for Thompson in the offense and could receive even a bigger role if Adrian Peterson is not able to play. Smallwood probably can be avoided in most leagues if Peterson is active for the game.

From TheHuddle

Vernon Davis Oct 23 2:43pm ET

Washington Redskins TE Vernon Davis (concussion) was limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 23, but has been ruled out for Week 8.

Fantasy Spin: Jeremy Sprinkle likely will receive another start at tight end with Davis sidelined but should not be a starting option in any fantasy league.

From TheHuddle

Adrian Peterson Oct 23 2:43pm ET

Washington Redskins RB Adrian Peterson (ankle) was limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 23, and is listed as questionable for Week 8.

Fantasy Spin: Peterson is optimistic about his availability for Week 8, but fantasy players will need to check the inactive list for his official status. He will be a risky option if he is active and may only be a flex option in certain leagues.

From TheHuddle

Kyle Rudolph Oct 23 2:33pm ET

Minnesota Vikings TE Kyle Rudolph (thumb) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23, and is not on the injury report for Week 8.

Fantasy Spin: Rudolph may see a few more targets this week with Adam Thielen out and can be a low-end No. 1 tight end in deeper fantasy leagues.

From TheHuddle

Everson Griffen Oct 23 2:33pm ET

Minnesota Vikings DT Jalyn Holmes (illness) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23, and is listed as questionable for Week 8. DE Everson Griffen (quadriceps), DT Linval Joseph (knee), DT Hercules Mata'afa (neck), CB Xavier Rhodes (hip), OT Riley Reiff (ankle), LB Eric Kendricks (hip), LB Ben Gedeon (concussion), OG Josh Kline (foot) and DT Shamar Stephen (knee) fully participated in practice and are not on the injury report.

From TheHuddle

Adam Thielen Oct 23 2:23pm ET

Minnesota Vikings WR Adam Thielen (hamstring) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23, and has been ruled out for Week 8.

Fantasy Spin: Thielen did not have enough time to recover from the injury but may have a chance to play in Week 9. Stefon Diggs and Kyle Rudolph will be the main options in the passing game and should be starting options in fantasy, but Olabisi Johnson should also receive a bigger role and could be a flex option in some leagues.

From TheHuddle

Marcell Dareus Oct 23 2:13pm ET

Jacksonville Jaguars DT Marcell Dareus (core) is scheduled to meet with a specialist to see if he will need surgery on his core muscle injury, according to a source. Dareus likely will be sidelined for four to six weeks if he needs surgery.

From TheHuddle

Nick Foles Oct 23 2:13pm ET

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Nick Foles (collarbone) is expected to be a limited participant during practice Wednesday, Oct. 23. He is expected to be activated from the Reserve/Injured list in time for the Week 11 game.

Fantasy Spin: Gardner Minshew will be the starting quarterback for a few more games, but it is not known if Minshew or Foles will be the starter when both are healthy. Fantasy players should monitor the situation because the team's starting quarterback will have fantasy value.

From TheHuddle

David Johnson Oct 23 2:10pm ET

Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson (ankle) won't practice Wednesday, but the team wants to see where he's at by the end of the week. The team signed running backs Zach Zenner and Alfred Morris for depth, but Johnson still has a chance to play. The breakout of running back Chase Edmonds doesn't give them any urgency to run Johnson out there. Edmonds is averaging 5.6 yards per carry, and he went off last week with 27 carries for 126 yards and three touchdowns against a weaker opponent. The New Orleans Saints are a tougher matchup. If Johnson is able to play, he'll be a high-end RB2, and Edmonds would fall to flex status. Conversely, if Johnson is out, Edmonds is the high-end RB2.

From RotoBaller

Patrick Mahomes Oct 23 1:53pm ET

Updating an earlier report, Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) will throw the ball today at practice, and they'll see if he can make it through the individual period.

Fantasy Spin: We'll need to see more to believe he's going to play this weekend. Obviously, he should be in your lineups if he goes.

From TheHuddle

David Johnson Oct 23 1:43pm ET

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson (ankle) is out of practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Fantasy Spin: The team signed Zach Zenner and Alfred Morris to shore up their depleted backfield, but Johnson has a chance to play. However, it's trending toward Chase Edmonds being an RB2 against the New Orleans Saints.

From TheHuddle

Patrick Mahomes Oct 23 1:23pm ET

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) will practice Wednesday, Oct. 23, but QB Matt Moore will take the majority of team repetitions. Head coach Andy Reid didn't rule out Mahomes playing in Week 8.

Fantasy Spin: We'd put Mahomes on the wrong side of questionable this week and look toward other options. Moore isn't worth consideration unless you play two quarterbacks.
